Bullying is a growing concern in China, yet there are few validated scales designed to measure different types of bullying among Chinese children. In this present study, a bilingual team of researchers use a forward-backward translation process to adapt the Bullying, Harassment, and Aggression Receipt Measure (BullyHARM) for Chinese youth. BullyHARM has previously been shown to be a reliable scale for measuring six bullying domains (i.e., physical, verbal, social/relational, cyber, property, sexual) among children in the United States (US). After cultural and linguistic adaptation, we enrolled 397 middle school students from Beijing, China in a validation study to assess the psychometric properties of the new BullyHARM-China scale. Results of confirmatory factor analysis suggest the final 21-item scale displays strong internal consistency. Consistent with findings from the US, the first-order model of six factors (i.e., six bullying subscales) displays the best fit to the data. Our findings suggest that BullyHARM-China is a reliable tool for measuring bullying victimization among Chinese students.

BackgroundRacist socio-political and economic systems in the United States are root causes of HIV disparities among minoritized individuals. However, within HIV implementation science literature, there is scarce empirical research on how to effectively counter racism. This article names racism and White supremacy as key challenges to the success of the Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) initiative and delineates opportunities to integrate anti-racism into HIV interventions.MethodsFormative data were synthesized from 3 EHE studies in California, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Each study engaged with community stakeholders to inform pre-exposure prophylaxis interventions. Key informant interviews and focus groups were used to query individuals-including Black individuals-about implementation challenges. Although racism was not an a priori focus of included studies, discourse on race and racism emerged as key study findings from all projects.ResultsAcross diverse stakeholder groups and EHE locales, participants described racism as a threat to the success of the EHE initiative. Institutional and structural racism, intersectional stigma, and maltreatment of minoritized individuals within healthcare systems were cited as challenges to pre-exposure prophylaxis scale-up. Some recommendations for addressing racism were given-yet these primarily focused on the individual level (eg, enhanced training, outreach).ConclusionsEHE implementation scientists should commit to measurable anti-racist actions. To this end, we present a series of recommendations to help investigators evaluate the extent to which they are taking actionable steps to counter racism to improve the adoption, implementation, and real-world impact of EHE interventions for people of color.

Objective: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains a critical public health challenge and disproportionately affects young adults, racial minorities, and residents of the Southern United States. This study aimed to investigate HIV knowledge, risk perception, and testing behaviors among a sample of college students in South Carolina (SC). Participants: Undergraduate students (N = 256) from a large public university in SC. Methods: Participants completed a cross-sectional survey on HIV knowledge, testing behaviors, and attitudes. Results: More than one-third of participants displayed misunderstanding about HIV transmission. Less than 20% perceived themselves to be at-risk for HIV, and only 8% reported having ever been tested for HIV. In addition, a majority of participants (83%) reported they would feel ashamed if they acquired HIV. HIV knowledge was negatively correlated with HIV testing. Conclusions: Results indicate the need for HIV education among college students in SC to clear misconceptions, minimize knowledge gaps, reduce HIV-related stigma, and promote HIV testing.

Background: A high number of adolescents and young adults engage in opioid misuse and/or meet criteria for opioid use disorder (OUD). Youth also experience worse treatment outcomes when compared to adult counterparts.Objectives: This scoping review aimed to identify and summarize existing interventions designed to increase engagement of youth across the OUD care cascade, as well as describe clinical and research implications.Methods: Peer-reviewed literature was searched using PubMed, PsycInfo, and Web of Science. Studies were eligible if they presented outcomes of an intervention focused on engaging adolescents and young adults (ages 12–25 years) in the OUD care cascade and were published in English.Results: Nine articles met inclusion criteria that described interventions for adolescents and young adults across engagement, initiation, and retention in the OUD care cascade. Several strategies were used in interventions, including behavioral health and integrated health services, contingency management, meaningful family involvement, assertive outreach, and provider trainings/consultation. Only one intervention has been tested with a randomized control trial.Conclusions: Due to small sample sizes and lack of control groups, findings from existing intervention studies do not indicate which strategies are most effective. Further research is urgently needed to develop and evaluate effective interventions for youth with OUD. Providers working with youth should implement services to meet youth’s individual needs. Providers should consider utilizing integrated services and referrals to behavioral health, involving family in treatment, and use of contingency management and assertive outreach. Continuing education for providers on OUD treatment and developmental concerns is also crucially needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current study examined the effects of a silent rapid reading skills training intervention on the reading rate and reading achievement of primary school students in China in order to determine the efficacy of the intervention and explore potential gender differences. A total of 108 Chinese primary school students were randomly assigned by the classroom to either an experimental (n = 54) or control (n = 54) condition. Students in the experimental group completed 12 sessions of rapid reading skills training designed to increase their ability to rapidly read Chinese text in silence. Students in the control group engaged in regular Chinese language curriculum for the same time period. After the three-week intervention period, students in the experimental group displayed significantly greater silent reading speed of Chinese characters (M = 1331.26 characters per minute) compared to students in the control group (M = 617.48 characters per minute; p < 0.001). Children in the intervention group also displayed a significantly greater effective reading rate (F = 87.11, p < 0.001, partial n[superscript 2] = 0.46) at post-test compared to the control. Male students displayed greater increases in reading speed than female students. Neither intervention effect nor gender difference was evident for reading comprehension. Implications for educational interventions designed to increase silent reading speed among Chinese students are discussed.

School personnel play an important role in supporting the social-emotional needs of LGBTQ youth. Thus, the current study surveyed 157 school mental health providers (i.e., school psychologists, counselors, social workers) from the Southeastern United States in order to examine providers' knowledge, attitudes, and experiences in working with LGBTQ youth. While a majority reported having provided services to LGBTQ students, participants identified multiple barriers that may hinder their care. A number of key predictors of competency were identified, including provider characteristics and professional affiliation. Results have important implications for building the capacity of schools to meet the needs of LGBTQ students.

This study used a quasi-experimental design to investigate the impact of Rapid Reading Skills Training (RRST) on some reading outcomes for primary school students in central China and also examined the influence of cognitive flexibility on intervention outcomes. A sample of 108 students (mean age = 11.75 years) were recruited. Students' cognitive flexibility was measured with the Wisconsin Card Sorting Task. Cluster randomization was used to assign students at the whole class level to either an experimental or control condition. A 12-session RRST intervention was completed with the experimental class (N = 54). Silent reading speed and passage comprehension were measured before and after training for all students. Independent samples t-tests and two-factor repeated measures ANOVA revealed that students in the experimental class displayed higher scores for reading speed and effective reading rate post-intervention than those in the control class. Students who had scored higher on cognitive flexibility showed significantly larger increases post-intervention than those scored lower. Results provide preliminary support for using RRST to increase rapid silent reading speed among Chinese primary school students, though replication and more rigorous experimental designs are needed. Cognitive flexibility may enhance gains associated with this type of intervention. Implications for school psychologists are discussed.

Children of parents with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are at-risk for a variety of negative outcomes, including poor educational achievement. The multi-level, resilience-based "ChildCARE" intervention has been found to yield short-term improvement in a number of school-related variables for children affected by parental HIV. However, no studies have examined whether educational gains persist. Thus, this study evaluated whether children who received the "ChildCARE" intervention displayed better educational outcomes than children assigned to a control group at 24-, 30-, and 36-months post-intervention. We enrolled 790 Chinese children affected by parental HIV in a four-arm randomized controlled trial to evaluate the intervention components of "ChildCARE." Children and their caregivers were randomized to a control group, child-only intervention, child + caregiver intervention, or child + caregiver + community intervention. School outcomes at 24-, 30-, and 36-months suggested limited support for the efficacy of the intervention to yield sustained improvements in educational outcomes. Findings highlight the need for comprehensive and coordinated efforts that involve caregivers, communities, and schools to support children made vulnerable by parental HIV in China and around the world.

Objective Youth living with HIV (YLHIV) in the southern United States experience poor outcomes across the HIV care continuum and are at high-risk for virologic failure. This study used a qualitative, community-engaged approach to inform the development of a tailored mobile Health (mHealth) tool for YLHIV in South Carolina (SC). Methods Semistructured qualitative interviews were conducted with YLHIV in SC (n  = 16) and their HIV care providers (n  = 15). Focus group discussions (FGDs) were also conducted with HIV-focused community-based organization staff (n  = 23). Interviews and FGDs queried desired components for a future mHealth tool tailored for YLHIV. Data were analyzed using a team-based rapid qualitative approach. Results Across informants, key themes emerged related to medical management of HIV, including a desire for connections with medical providers, appointment and medication reminders, and accurate HIV information. In addition, informants voiced a desire for mental health resources to be integrated into the app. Connection with HIV-positive peers also emerged as a key desire from youth informants. In terms of app design, informants emphasized the need for strict privacy practices, a youth-friendly design, compensation for use, and integration with existing healthcare systems. Conclusions mHealth interventions developed for YLHIV should meet the mental health and social needs of YLHIV in addition to their medical needs. In addition, the highly stigmatized nature of HIV requires careful consideration when designing digital tools—youth want their privacy prioritized, but also express strong desire for social support to help cope with the isolation and stigma of this chronic health condition. Children affected by parental HIV/AIDS are at-risk for poor school outcomes including reduced attendance, lower grades, and lower school satisfaction compared to unaffected peers. Resilience-based interventions offer promise to improve functioning across a number of domains. A four-arm randomized controlled trial was conducted with 790 children affected by parental HIV/AIDS in rural, central China to examine the effects of a multi-level, resilience-based intervention (i.e., ChildCARE) on school outcomes. Child and caregiver dyads were randomized to a control group, child-only intervention, child + caregiver intervention, or child + caregiver + community intervention. School outcomes at 6-, 12-, and 18-months suggest that participation in the ChildCARE program yielded improvements in academic performance, school satisfaction, and school interest. Opportunities for school psychologists to engage in psychosocial and educational intervention for children impacted by HIV/AIDS are discussed.

To date, rater accuracy when using Direct Behavior Rating (DBR) has been evaluated by comparing DBR-derived data to scores yielded through systematic direct observation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate an alternative method for establishing comparison scores using expert-completed DBR alongside best practices in consensus building exercises, to evaluate the accuracy of ratings. Standard procedures for obtaining expert data were established and implemented across two sites. Agreement indices and comparison scores were derived. Findings indicate that the expert consensus building sessions resulted in high agreement between expert raters, lending support for this alternative method for identifying comparison scores for behavioral data.

Direct behavior rating (DBR) offers users a flexible, feasible method for the collection of behavioral data. Previous research has supported the validity of using DBR to rate three target behaviors: academic engagement, disruptive behavior, and compliance. However, the effect of the base rate of behavior on rater accuracy has not been established. In addition, although teachers report frequent use of DBR-like tools, little is known about what type of training is necessary to ensure accurate usage. The present study sought to determine (a) whether training with practice and feedback improves rater accuracy when rating academic engagement, disruptive behavior, and compliance and (b) whether rater accuracy varies at low, medium, and high levels of these behaviors. Participants ("N" = 67) were randomly assigned to one of three training conditions: brief familiarization, brief training with practice and feedback, or extensive training with practice and feedback. Following training, participants watched videos of elementary students and rated behavior with DBRs. Results indicated that practice with feedback improved rater accuracy for disruptive behavior but not for the behaviors of academic engagement and compliance. In addition, rater accuracy was found to vary significantly at different levels of behavior. Academic engagement was rated most accurately when high rates of the behavior were displayed. Disruptive behavior and compliance were rated most accurately at low or high base rates, while raters had more difficulty rating medium levels of behaviors. Limitations, implications, and future directions for research are discussed.

Older adults living with HIV (OALH) undergo challenges such as comorbidities, social isolation, and "double stigma" associated with their HIV and aging statuses. Simultaneously, research has shown that experiences of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) continue to impact the quality of life across the lifespan and may pose unique hardships for older adults. Despite the high prevalence of trauma among people living with HIV, research examining the psychosocial challenges of OALH with a CSA history is scant. To address this gap in the literature, this study aimed to explore psychosocial challenges among OALH who are CSA survivors using a qualitative approach. Twenty-four in-depth, semi-structured interviews were completed with OALH (age 50 years and older) who reported histories of CSA. Multiple coders and an inductive coding process were employed for data analysis. Four main themes regarding psychosocial challenges emerged from the analysis: (1) depression and suicidal ideation, (2) fear and anxiety, (3) social support issues, and (4) memory issues.
