Sorghum is a vital crop known for its resilience in harsh environmental conditions, playing a key role in food security and bioenergy production across the globe. Accurate sorghum weed classification is crucial for efficient agricultural management, yet traditional methods are labour-intensive and resource-heavy. This research presents the first work on the sorghum weed classification dataset, introducing a novel deep-learning model using a customised DenseNet-169, enhanced with two innovative feature extraction blocks: Dimensional Convolutional Feature Fusion (DCFF) and Deformable Multi-Kernel Channel Fusion (DMKCF). These blocks improve multi-scale feature extraction and adaptively capture complex patterns from the weed images. The model also integrates Triplet Attention (TA) to refine feature representations and employs Grad-CAM and LIME for visual interpretability, offering insights into the classification process. The proposed network, when tested on the SorghumWeedDataset_Classification, achieved a testing accuracy of 99.07%, surpassing several state-of-the-art CNN models. The proposed model provides a robust solution for sorghum weed classification, advancing agricultural monitoring and management practices. Additionally, the model achieved 100% accuracy for the broad leaf weed class, further underscoring its effectiveness in identifying and classifying sorghum weeds with absolute precision.

Background and Aims: Anemia impairs glucose homeostasis, affects glycemic control, and predisposes to complications in diabetics. It correlates with oxidative stress and increases the risk of developing microvascular and macrovascular complications. However, it is an underrecognized comorbidity in diabetics. This study was conducted to assess the prevalence of anemia in diabetic patients and compare the metabolic profiles of anemic and non-anemic diabetics. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study, conducted among type 2 diabetes (T2DM) patients, at the outpatient clinic. Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), known hematological disorders, and chronic inflammatory disorders were excluded. Background: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a safe and effective HIV prevention strategy. However, in countries such as India where PrEP is driven by the private healthcare system and there is no centralized reporting, it is unknown which populations benefit from PrEP and which populations are being left behind. Objectives: We examined and characterized PrEP use and awareness among the sexual and gender minorities using smartphones in India and found measures of association of PrEP use. Design: This is a cross-sectional study design. Methods: We used Grindr—a widely used geosocial mobile application—to conduct a national cross-sectional survey in India, including respondents who were 18 years or older and reported sex with men (those who identified as cis-gender females were excluded). We examined overall PrEP awareness and PrEP use, then calculated adjusted prevalence odds ratio and 95% confidence intervals to understand PrEP use correlation with socio-behavioral factors. Results: Out of the total of 3116 eligible participants, 30.3% ( N = 947) were aware of PrEP and 3.1% ( N = 97) reported current PrEP use. Our multivariate regression model found that there was a statistically significant association of PrEP use with higher income, being employed, preferred language as English for survey, relationship status as single, and use of party drugs. At the same time, there was a statistically significant association of PrEP awareness with age group, having higher education as a graduate or above, higher income, use of party drugs, and multiple sexual partners. Conclusion: We found overall low awareness and low PrEP use in our cross-sectional sample. PrEP use and awareness were higher among those who belonged to higher-income groups. Including PrEP in existing programmatic interventions by government and NGOs may contribute to PrEP scale-up, which is urgent to stop the HIV epidemic in India.

Young men of color who have sex with men are vulnerable to HIV and experience poor PrEP uptake and retention. We conducted a secondary data analysis and calculated adjusted Prevalence Odds Ratios (aPORs) for PrEP retention along with 95% CIs at 90, 180, and 360 days at an organization running safety net clinics in Texas for gay and bisexual men. We found statistically significant association with age, race, in-clinic versus telehealth appointments, and having healthcare insurance. White clients had an aPOR of 1.29 [1.00, 1.67] as compared to Black clients at 90 days. Age group of 18–24 had a lower aPOR than all other age groups except 55 or older at all three time periods. Clients who met providers in person had an aPOR of 2.6 [2.14, 3.19] at 90, 2.6 [2.2, 3.30] at 180 days and 2.84 [2.27, 3.54] at 360 days. Our findings highlight the need for population-specific targeted interventions.

Abstract Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are a promising technology for long‐duration energy storage; but they suffer from inefficiencies in part due to the overvoltages at the electrode surface. In this work, more than 70 electrode treatments are reviewed that are previously shown to reduce the overvoltages and improve performance for vanadium RFBs (VRFBs), the most commercialized RFB technology. However, identifying treatments that improve performance the most and whether they are industrially implementable is challenging. This study attempts to address this challenge by comparing treatments under similar operating conditions and accounting for the treatment process complexity. The different treatments are compared at laboratory and industrial scale based on criteria for VRFB performance, treatment stability, economic feasibility, and ease of industrial implementation. Thermal, plasma, electrochemical oxidation, CO2 treatments, as well as Bi, Ag, and Cu catalysts loaded on electrodes are identified as the most promising for adoption in large scale VRFBs. The similarity in electrode treatments for aqueous‐organic RFBs (AORFBs) and VRFBs is also identified. The need of standardization in RFBs testing along with fundamental studies to understand charge transfer reactions in redox active species used in RFBs moving forward is emphasized.

Aim: Globally, the incidence of lung cancer amongst women appears to be increasing. We aimed to compare the socio-epidemiological and clinical characteristics of lung cancer amongst men and women from a large cohort at a tertiary care hospital in Northern India. Methods: Records of patients diagnosed with lung cancer between January 2008 and March 2020 were reviewed. Baseline epidemiological data, clinical characteristics, histologic profiles, treatment administered, and survival were compared between males and females. Results: A total of 2054 male and 438 female patients were included in analysis. Compared to males, female patients were younger [median age, 56 vs. 60 years, P < 0.001)], less likely to be working, less educated beyond secondary level and less likely to be smokers (29.1% vs. 84.9%, P < 0.0001). Background: HIV cure-directed clinical trials using analytical treatment interruptions (ATIs) require participants to adhere to frequent monitoring visits for viral load tests. Novel viral load monitoring strategies are needed to decrease participant burden during ATIs. Objective: To examine acceptability of a novel home-based blood collection device for viral load testing in the context of two ongoing ATI trials in Philadelphia, PA, United States. Methods: From January 2021 to February 2022, participants completed three in-depth interviews via teleconference during their participation in an ATI: (1) within two weeks of enrollment in the device study, (2) approximately four weeks after beginning to use the device, and (3) within two weeks of the end of the ATI when ART was re-initiated. We used conventional content analysis to analyze the data. Results: We recruited 17 participants: 15 were cisgender males, 1 cisgender female, and 1 transgender woman. We observed an overall 87% success rate in drawing blood with the device from home collection and found overall high acceptance of the device. A mean of 91.5 devices per participant were used for home-based blood collection. Most PWH viewed the device as relatively convenient, painless, easy to use, and a simple solution to frequent blood draws. The main challenge encountered was the inability to completely fill up devices with blood in some cases. Most participants reported positive experiences with mailing blood samples and could see themselves using the device on a regular basis outside of ATIs. Conclusions: Our study showed participant valued the novel home-based peripheral blood collection for viral load testing in the context of ATI trials. More research will be necessary to optimize implementation of the device and to assess whether blood collected can reliably measure viral loads in the context of ATI trials.

Abstract Background Most HIV cure-related studies involve interrupting antiretroviral treatment to assess the efficacy of pharmacologic interventions – also known as analytical treatment interruptions (ATIs). ATIs imply the risk of passing HIV to sexual partners due to the loss of undetectable HIV status. There has been a notable lack of attention paid to perceptions of ATIs among racial, ethnic, sex and gender minorities, and HIV serodifferent couples. These populations are among those most impacted by HIV in the United States. Future HIV cure research paradigms should equitably include considerations from these groups. Methods From August – October 2020, we conducted in-depth interviews with 10 racial, ethnic, sex, and gender minority HIV serodifferent couples in geographically diverse regions of the United States to understand their perspectives about ATIs and partner protection measures to prevent secondary HIV transmissions because of participation in ATI studies. We used framework analysis to analyze the qualitative data. Results Of the 10 couples recruited, four identified as a gay couple, two as a gay and bisexual couple, two as a heterosexual couple, one as a gay and queer couple, and one as a queer couple. We found that HIV serodifferent couples in our study viewed ATIs as contradicting HIV treatment adherence messages. Couples expressed discomfort around ATIs in HIV cure research. They were concerned with the return of HIV detectability and worried ATIs might result in secondary HIV transmission. Participants were strongly in favor of using a range of partner protection measures during ATIs that included PrEP, HIV risk reduction counseling, and alternatives for penetrative sex practices. Couples also recommended that sex partners be consulted or involved as part of ATI trials. Conclusions Our findings highlight new potential opportunities and strategies to mitigate risk of HIV transmission during ATIs among key groups historically under-represented in HIV cure research. Findings also underscore the relational aspects of ATI trials. We provide preliminary considerations for planning ATI trials with diverse HIV serodifferent partners. Future studies should continue to explore these issues among other types of partnerships, cultures, and socio-cultural settings.

Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS CoV-2), which causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has rapidly evolved into a pandemic, affecting more than 90 million people and more than 1.9 million deaths worldwide. Despite extensive study, the prognostic role of various hematological and biochemical parameters remains unclear. Methods: This study was carried out at a COVID care facility in Delhi. The demographic and clinical information, laboratory parameters (hematological, biochemical, and inflammatory), and the treatment of admitted COVID-19 patients during first wave were collected from electronic medical records and were subsequently analyzed. Results: Between March 2020 and November 2020, a total of 5574 patients were admitted to hospital due to COVID-19. Majority (77.2%) were male and had a mean (standard deviation [SD]) age of 38.9 (14.9) years. The mean (SD) duration of hospital stay was significantly higher in nonsurvivors. Out of the entire cohort, 8.7% of the patients had comorbidities, whereas 47.1% of the patients were asymptomatic at presentation. Compared to the survivors, the nonsurvivors had a significantly higher proportion of comorbidities and were more likely to be symptomatic. Patients who died during hospital stay had significantly higher relative neutrophil percent and neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio and lower lymphocyte percent. The patients who died had significantly higher levels of ferritin, D-dimer, and fibrinogen. Conclusions: Analysis of various hematological and inflammatory parameters can provide useful prognostic information among COVID-19-affected patients. It can also help in identifying patients who merit aggressive institutional care and thereby potentially mitigate the mortality.

Introduction: The small cell variant is a relatively uncommon but aggressive form of lung cancer. The present study aims to analyse the clinical characteristics, treatment outcomes and prognostic factors of an ambispectively enrolled large cohort of small cell lung cancer (SCLC) in the Indian population over a decade-long period. Materials and Methods: All patients diagnosed with SCLC between 2008 and 2020 at a tertiary care lung cancer clinic were included. The clinical details, demographics, details of investigations, treatment and survival outcomes were recorded and analysed. Results: A total of 361 patients were included. The majority were males (86.4%) with a mean (SD) age of 57.3 (12.3) years. Further, 34.9% were current smokers, with the median smoking index being 520 (interquartile range [IQR]: 260–1000). The majority had good performance status, that is, the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group scale (ECOG) 0 or 1 (65%), and Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS) ≥70 (85.9%). Also, 73.3% had extensive stage disease. The median time from symptom onset to definitive diagnosis was 91 days. Treatment details were available for 179 patients: chemotherapy only (n = 128), combined chemo-radiotherapy (n = 41) and radiotherapy only (n = 10). The median (IQR) progression-free survival (PFS) was 182 (94 to 306) days and the median (IQR) overall survival (OS) was 205 (94 to 429) days. On univariate analysis, factors that significantly affected survival included smoking index and performance status. However, on multivariate analysis, only the performance status significantly affected PFS, whereas none of these factors were significant for OS. Conclusions: SCLC predominantly affects males with a heavy smoking index. The diagnosis is usually made late; survival remains poor and is predominantly affected by the performance status.

Background: Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) has been rarely reported from India. We aim to describe the experience of diagnosing and treating cardiac amyloid over three decades from a tertiary care center in India. Materials and Methods: Medical records were screened starting from 1987 up to 2019 and patients with histopathological diagnosis of CA were identified. The demographics, clinical presentation, investigations available, prognosis, and outcomes were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed. Results: A total of 40 patients were enrolled, out of which 26 (65%) were males. Median age at presentation was 51 years with a range of 33–65 years. Fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath were the most common presenting symptoms. Clinical features of systemic amyloidosis including periorbital ecchymosis and macroglossia were present in 7.5% and 10% patients, respectively. Median survival from diagnosis was 2.1 years. Conclusions: Cardiac amyloid is a rarely diagnosed cause of restrictive cardiomyopathy in India and usually fatal. The patients in India are younger than the West. Endomyocardial biopsy is usually required to make a diagnosis of cardiac involvement though magnetic resonance imaging and nuclear imaging may raise a suspicion of cardiac amyloid.
