Control over intensity, shape, direction, and phase of coherent light is essential in numerous fields, reaching from gravitational wave astronomy over quantum metrology and ultrafast sciences to semi-conductor fabrication. Modern laser optics, however, frequently demands parameter regimes where either the wavelength or the optical power restricts control due to linear absorption, light-induced damage or optical nonlinearity. The properties of solid media, upon which most photonic control schemes rely, impose these limitations. We propose to circumvent these constraints using gaseous media tailored by high-intensity ultrasound waves. We demonstrate a first implementation of this approach by deflecting ultrashort laser pulses using ultrasound waves in ambient air, entirely omitting transmissive solid media. At optical peak powers of 20 GW exceeding previous limits of solid-based acousto-optic modulation by about three orders of magnitude, we reach a deflection efficiency greater than 50% while preserving excellent beam quality. Entanglement is one of the most fascinating aspects distinguishing quantum from classical physics. It is the backbone of quantum information processing which relies on engineered quantum systems. It also exists in natural systems such as atoms and molecules, showcased in many experimental instances mostly in the form of entangled photon pairs and a few examples of entanglement between massive particles. Nevertheless, the control of entanglement in natural systems has never been demonstrated. In artificially prepared quantum systems, on the other hand, the creation and manipulation of entanglement lies at the heart of quantum computing currently implemented in a wide array of two-level systems (e.g. trapped ions, superconducting and semiconductor systems). These processes are, however, relatively slow: the time scale of the entanglement generation and control ranges from a couple of {\mu}s in case of trapped-ion quantum systems down to tens of ns in superconducting systems. In this letter, we show ultrafast optical control of entanglement between massive fundamental particles in a natural system on a time scale faster than that available to engineered systems. We demonstrate the sub-femtosecond control of electronic entangled states in a single hydrogen molecule by applying few-photon interactions with adjustable relative delays. This molecular entanglement is revealed in the asymmetric electron emission with respect to the ejected proton in the photodissociation of H2. We anticipate that these results open the way to entanglement-based operations at THz speed.

Reconstruction of Attosecond Beating By Interference of Two-photon Transitions (RABBITT) is a technique that can be used to determine the phases of atomic transition elements in photoionization processes. In the traditional RABBITT scheme, the so-called "asymptotic approximation" considers the measured phase as a sum of the Wigner phase linked to a single-photon ionization process and the continuum-continuum (cc) phase associated with further single-photon transitions in the continuum. In this paper, we explore the possibility of extending the asymptotic approximation to multi-sideband RABBITT schemes. The predictions from this approximation are then compared with results obtained by an {\it ab initio} calculation based on solving the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation for atomic hydrogen., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

When an atom or molecule absorbs a high-energy photon, an electron is emitted with a well-defined energy and a highly-symmetric angular distribution, ruled by energy quantization and parity conservation. These rules seemingly break down when small quantum systems are exposed to short and intense light pulses, which raise the question of their universality for the simplest case of the photoelectric effect. Here we investigate the photoionization of helium by a sequence of attosecond pulses in the presence of a weak infrared dressing field. We continuously control the energy and introduce an asymmetry in the emission direction of the photoelectrons, thus contradicting well established quantum-mechanical predictions. This control is possible due to an extreme temporal confinement of the light-matter interaction. We demonstrate the control of multiphoton electron excitations in InAs nanowires (NWs) by altering the crystal structure and the light polarization. Using few-cycle, near-infrared laser pulses from an optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification system, we induce multiphoton electron excitations in InAs nanowires with controlled wurtzite (WZ) and zincblende (ZB) segments. With a photoemission electron microscope, we show that we can selectively induce multiphoton electron emission from WZ or ZB segments of the same wire by varying the light polarization. Developing \textit{ab-initio GW} calculations of 1st to 3rd order multiphoton excitations and using finite-difference time-domain simulations, we explain the experimental findings: While the electric-field enhancement due to the semiconductor/vacuum interface has a similar effect for all NW segments, the 2nd and 3rd order multiphoton transitions in the band structure of WZ InAs are highly anisotropic, in contrast to ZB InAs. As the crystal phase of NWs can be precisely and reliably tailored, our findings opens up for new semiconductor optoelectronics with controllable nanoscale emission of electrons through vacuum or dielectric barriers., Comment: 6 figures, 27 pages (including cover picture)

Ultrafast processes in matter can be captured and even controlled by using sequences of few-cycle optical pulses, which need to be well characterized, both in amplitude and phase. The same degree of control has not yet been achieved for few-cycle extreme ultraviolet pulses generated by high-order harmonic generation in gases, with duration in the attosecond range. Here, we show that by varying the spectral phase and carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of a high-repetition rate laser, using dispersion in glass, we achieve a high degree of control of the relative phase and CEP between consecutive attosecond pulses. We present efficient high-order harmonic generation (HHG) based on a high-repetition rate, few-cycle, near infrared (NIR), carrier-envelope phase stable, optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier (OPCPA), emitting 6fs pulses with 9{\mu}J pulse energy at 200kHz repetition rate. In krypton, we reach conversion efficiencies from the NIR to the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation pulse energy on the order of ~10^{-6} with less than 3{\mu}J driving pulse energy. This is achieved by optimizing the OPCPA for a spatially and temporally clean pulse and by a specially designed high-pressure gas target. In the future, the high efficiency of the HHG source will be beneficial for high-repetition rate two-colour (NIR-XUV) pumpprobe experiments, where the available pulse energy from the laser has to be distributed economically between pump and probe pulses., Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures

We present a retrieval algorithm based on generalized projections for ultrashort pulse characterization using dispersion scan (d-scan). The new algorithm is tested on several simulated cases and in two different experimental cases in the few-cycle regime. The proposed algorithm is much faster and leads to a drastic reduction of retrieval times, but performs less robust in the retrieval of noisy d-scan traces compared to the standard algorithm.

Generation of few-cycle optical vortex pulses is challenging due to the large spectral bandwidths, as most vortex generation techniques are designed for monochromatic light. In this work, we use a spiral phase plate to generate few-cycle optical vortices from an ultrafast titanium:sapphire oscillator, and characterize them in the spatiotemporal domain using a recently introduced technique based on spatially resolved Fourier transform spectrometry. The performance of this simple approach to the generation of optical vortices is analyzed from a wavelength dependent perspective, as well as in the spatiotemporal domain, allowing us to completely characterize ultrashort vortex pulses in space, frequency, and time.
