During the last decade, there has been an increasing interest in the rationalisation of how structural changes stabilise (or destabilise) diradical systems. Demonstrated herein is that indolocarbazole (ICz) diradicals, substituted with dicyanomethylene (DCM) groups, are useful motifs for dynamic covalent chemistry by self-assembling from isolated monomers to cyclophane structures. The comparison of ICz-based systems substituted with DCM groups in para- or meta-positions (p-ICz-CN and m-ICz-CN) and their short-chain carbazole analogues (p-Cz-CN and m-Cz-CN) may identify new potential design strategies for stimuli-responsive materials. The principal objectives of this investigation are the elucidation of (i) the connection between diradical character and the cyclophane stability, (ii) the spatial disposition of the cyclophane structures, (iii) the monomer/cyclophane interconversion both in solution and solid state in response to external stimuli and (iv) the impact that the different π-conjugation and electronic communication between the DCM terminals exerts on the electronic adsorption of the diradicals and their redox behavior. The spontaneous nature of the cyclophane structure is supported by the negative relative Gibbs free energies calculated at 298 K and experimentally by UV-Vis and Raman spectroscopy of the initial yellow solid powder. The conversion to monomeric species having diradical character was demonstrated by variable-temperature (VT) EPR, UV-Vis, Raman and IR measurements, resulting in appreciable chromic changes. In addition, electrochemical oxidation and reduction convert the cyclophane dimer (m-ICz-CN)2 to the monomer monocations and dianions, respectively. This research demonstrates how the chemical reactivity and physical properties of π-conjugated diradicals can be effectively tuned by subtle changes in their chemical structures. In recent years, the field of organometallic chemistry has made a great progress and diverse types of metallaaromatics have successively been reported. In those studies, incorporation of ligated osmium centers into metallaaromatic systems played a prominent role. The reviewed literature documents that certain metallaaromatics with unconventional photophysical properties, redox and electronic transport properties and magnetism, have potential to be widely used in diverse practical applications, with selected examples of amino acid and fluoride anion identification, photothermal effects, functional materials, photodynamic therapy (PDT) in biomedicine, single‐molecule junction conductors, and electron‐transport layer materials (ETLs) in solar cells. Three novel rhenium N−heterocyclic carbene complexes, [Re]−NHC−1−3 ([Re] = fac−Re(CO)3Br), were synthesized and characterized using a range of spectroscopic techniques. Photophysical, electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical studies were carried out to probe the properties of these organometallic compounds. Re−NHC−1 and Re−NHC−2 bear a phenanthrene backbone on an imidazole (NHC) ring, coordinating to Re by both the carbene C and a pyridyl group attached to one of the imidazole nitrogen atoms. Re−NHC−2 differs from Re−NHC−1 by replacing N−H with an N−benzyl group as the second substituent on imidazole. The replacement of the phenanthrene backbone in Re−NHC−2 with the larger pyrene gives Re−NHC−3. The two−electron electrochemical reductions of Re−NHC−2 and Re−NHC−3 result in the formation of the five−coordinate anions that are capable of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction. These catalysts are formed first at the initial cathodic wave R1, and then, ultimately, via the reduction of Re−Re bound dimer intermediates at the second cathodic wave R2. All three Re−NHC−1−3 complexes are active photocatalysts for the transformation of CO2 to CO, with the most photostable complex, Re−NHC−3, being the most effective for this conversion. Re−NHC−1 and Re−NHC−2 afforded modest CO turnover numbers (TONs), following irradiation at 355 nm, but were inactive at the longer irradiation wavelength of 470 nm. In contrast, Re−NHC−3, when photoexcited at 470 nm, yielded the highest TON in this study, but remained inactive at 355 nm. The luminescence spectrum of Re−NHC−3 is red−shifted compared to those of Re−NHC−1 and Re−NHC−2, and previously reported similar [Re]−NHC complexes. This observation, together with TD−DFT calculations, suggests that the nature of the lowest−energy optical excitation for Re−NHC−3 has π→π*(NHC−pyrene) and dπ(Re)→π*(pyridine) (IL/MLCT) character. The stability and superior photocatalytic performance of Re−NHC−3 are attributed to the extended conjugation of the π−electron system, leading to the beneficial modulation of the strongly electron−donating tendency of the NHC group. [FeFe]-Ase biomimics containing a redox-active ferrocenyl diphosphine have been prepared and their ability to reduce protons and oxidise H2 studied, including 1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene (dppf) complexes Fe2(CO)4(μ-dppf)(μ-S(CH2)nS) (n = 2, edt; n = 3, pdt) and Fe2(CO)4(μ-dppf)(μ-SAr)2 (Ar = Ph, p-tolyl, p-C6H4NH2), together with the more electron-rich 1,1′-bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)ferrocene (dcpf) complex Fe2(CO)4(μ-dcpf)(μ-pdt). Crystallographic characterisation of four of these show similar overall structures, the diphosphine spanning an elongated Fe–Fe bond (ca. 2.6 Å), lying trans to one sulfur and cis to the second. In solution the diphosphine is flexible, as shown by VT NMR studies, suggesting that Fe2⋯Fe distances of ca. 4.5–4.7 Å in the solid state vary in solution. Cyclic voltammetry, IR spectroelectrochemistry and DFT calculations have been used to develop a detailed picture of electronic and structural changes occurring upon oxidation. In MeCN, Fe2(CO)4(μ-dppf)(μ-pdt) shows two chemically reversible one-electron oxidations occurring sequentially at Fe2 and Fc sites respectively. For other dppf complexes, reversibility of the first oxidation is poor, consistent with an irreversible structural change upon removal of an electron from the Fe2 centre. In CH2Cl2, Fe2(CO)4(μ-dcpf)(μ-pdt) shows a quasi-reversible first oxidation together with subsequent oxidations suggesting that the generated cation has some stability but slowly rearranges. Both pdt complexes readily protonate upon addition of HBF4·Et2O to afford bridging-hydride cations, [Fe2(CO)4(μ-H)(μ-dcpf)(μ-pdt)]+, species which catalytically reduce protons to generate H2. In the presence of pyridine, [Fe2(CO)4(μ-dppf)(μ-pdt)]2+ catalytically oxidises H2 but none of the other complexes do this, probably resulting from the irreversible nature of their first oxidation. Mechanistic details of both proton reduction and H2 oxidation have been studied by DFT allowing speculative reaction schemes to be developed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work describes the synthesis and properties of a dicyanomethylene‐substituted indolo[3,2‐b]carbazole diradical ICz‐CN. This quinoidal system dimerises almost completely to (ICz‐CN)2, which contains two long C(sp3)−C(sp3) σ‐bonds between the dicyanomethylene units. The minor open‐shell ICz‐CN component in the solid‐state mixture was identified by EPR spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammetry and UV–visible spectroelectrochemical data, as well as comparison with reference monomer ICz‐Br reveal that the nature of the one‐electron oxidation of (ICz‐CN)2 at ambient temperature and ICz‐CN at elevated temperature is very similar in all these compounds due to the prevailing localization of their HOMO on the ICz backbone. The peculiar cathodic behaviour reflects the co‐existence of (ICz‐CN)2 and ICz‐CN. The involvement of the dicyanomethylene groups stabilizes the close‐lying LUMO and LUMO+1 of (ICz‐CN)2 and especially ICz‐CN compared to ICz‐Br, resulting in a distinctive cathodic response at low overpotentials. Differently from neutral ICz‐CN, its radical anion and dianion are remarkably stable under ambient conditions. The UV/Vis(–NIR) electronic transitions in parent (ICz‐CN)2 and ICz‐CN and their different redox forms have been assigned convincingly with the aid of TD‐DFT calculations. The σ‐bond in neutral (ICz‐CN)2 is cleaved in solution and in the solid‐state upon soft external stimuli (temperature, pressure), showing a strong chromism from light yellow to blue–green. Notably, in the solid state, the monomeric diradical species is predominantly formed under high hydrostatic pressure (>1 GPa). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
