This review uses a case study based on an executed afforestation project to comprehensively describe the administrative procedure regarding afforestation of agricultural land in the Czech Republic, Central Europe. We consider the official proceedings for obtaining a permit to land-use change (i.e. changing the nature of land use and the mode of land use in the real estate cadastre) as a very complex and protracted procedure, which can substantially reduce the motivation of people to establish new forests. Therefore, we propose a simplification of the administration process of land-use change. The main idea is to make the procedure as simple as possible in those areas where afforestation is desirable, especially from the environmental point of view. It assumes the possibility of quick, precise and, if possible, automatic distinction whether the afforestation is suitable or not. The situation in the Czech Republic is compared with the surrounding Central-European countries: Poland and Slovakia. Forests are highly relevant for the water dynamics of mountain areas. This study assesses the water balance of two mountainous watersheds in Austria (Rindbach and Schmittental) with similar average annual precipitation patterns but different parent material, i.e., limestone in Rindbach versus greywacke in Schmittental. The biogeochemical mechanistic ecosystem model Biome-BGC with parameter settings developed for the central European tree species was obtained to assess the energy, nutrient, and water cycle as relevant for tree growth (=carbon cycle). The seasonal precipitation pattern, the snow accumulation, the evapotranspiration, the transpiration, the water-use efficiency, and the outflow are investigated. For the period 1960 to 2022, no precipitation trends are detectable, but a temperature increase of 1.9 °C in Rindbach and 1.6 °C in Schmittental is evident, leading to a declining snow accumulation. The model simulations suggest that transpiration and evapotranspiration rates increase with increasing LAI, indicating higher rates in Rindbach compared to Schmittental. The water use efficiency increases up to an LAI = 3 m2 m−2 and declines afterwards. The water balance variables follow the same pattern, i.e., with increasing LAI, the water outflow at the Rindbach catchment declines from 78% to 29% and from 72% to 31% in Schmittental. Deadwood in forests is becoming an important topic globally for forest management and carbon markets. While deadwood volume is now routinely assessed by forest inventories and can be even monitored using remote sensing, data about deadwood carbon and density depending on the extent of decay is scarce. We propose a simple concept for estimating deadwood carbon using data from a pilot study in selected coniferous and broadleaf forests covering different climate zones in Austria. We measured deadwood volume and decay classes and calculated deadwood density and carbon fraction from destructive field samples. We found that decay reduces deadwood density significantly, while carbon fraction increases moderately with decay. Partitioning the explained variation confirmed that size and site parameters are more important for explaining deadwood carbon fraction than for deadwood density. These patterns were consistent for coniferous and broadleaf tree species. We also show how to estimate deadwood carbon stocks using standard forest inventory measurements or country statistics, without information on decay classes. We found differences in decay classes of standing versus lying deadwood, and our proposed method allows considering this in large-scale deadwood carbon assessments. Ethiopian mixed forests have multipurpose benefits and services. However, there is a gap of information in the entire Ethiopian highlands on forest growth needed for implementation of sustainable forest management and provision of ecosystem services. Therefore, main aim of this study was to identify main factors deriving tree growth in forest and woodland in Amhara Regional State of Ethiopia and to provide an individual tree basal area increment (BAI) model based on increment cores. The data came from 170 sampling plots in study area and cover 51 tree species. For each tree species, diameter at breast height (DBH), height, increment core measurement, tree location, and distance from subject tree measurements were recorded. Because of large number of trees species, it is difficult to develop growth functions for each individual tree species. Thus, classification of species groups provided a framework to organize information that differs between vegetation types. Our classification resulted in three groups. For each tree species group, an individual tree BAI model was calibrated. The tree species group of BAI differs by DBH class. The response to BAI depends on competitive condition of a tree. This growth model can be used to predict tree growth for Ethiopian mixed-species forests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
