6. Maize cultivar mixtures: a sustainable approach for weed management under reduced herbicide dose.

Abstract

Weeds pose a significant threat to agricultural productivity and food security, necessitating the use of herbicides for proper management. However, reliance on herbicides can lead to environmental degradation and the development of herbicide-resistant weeds. There is a growing trend towards employing natural weed control methods to reduce dependence on chemical herbicides and promote sustainable farming. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of maize hybrid mixture in integrated weed management practices. The research was conducted at the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan. The treatments were organized in a split-plot arrangement in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The experimental factors included a combination of maize hybrids (YH-5427 short-statured and DK-6714 tall-statured) with incremental doses of mesotrione and atrazine. A significant decrease in weed biomass of up to 81.7% was recorded in the hybrid mixture at the 25% reduced dose (mesotrione and atrazine), which was statistically at par with an 82.7% reduction in single hybrids. Similarly, the grain yield of the mixture at reduced herbicide dose was 11,127 kg ha−1 and 10,590 kg ha−1 having no statistical difference with the short-statured and tall-statured hybrid yields. Furthermore, the cultivar mixture consistently provided higher net return (up to $1412) and benefit-to-cost ratio (up to 2.21) across all treatments. However, careful selection of hybrids that are strong competitors with high yields and less dependence on herbicides can help achieve both environmental and economic objectives in weed control and crop production. Abstract

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of shoulder reduction developed by Prakash. METHODOLOGY: This descriptive study was carried out at Rehman Medical and Surgical Center District Buner and Naseer Teaching Hospital Peshawar from June 2017 to December 2019. All patients with a history of trauma to either shoulder were subjected to anterior-posterior shoulder radiograph. Those having shoulder dislocation were enrolled in the study. Data including age, gender, previous dislocation history, duration of dislocation and associated fracture, and fracture type were recorded in patient case sheet. Patients having recurrent dislocation, polytrauma, low GCS, fracture-dislocations, and more than a week history of dislocation were excluded from the study. RESULTS: This study was performed on 30 patients. The mean age of the patients was 36.46±11.58 years. Among them, 83.3% (n=25) were male and 16.7% (n=5) were female. While dislocation occurred on the right shoulder in 63.3% (n=19) and in 36.7% (n=11) on the left side. All the patients have dislocation for the first time. The reduction was performed using Prakash’s method. The success rate was 90% (n=27) and 10% (n=3) the reduction failed, which was then reduced under anesthesia using the Hippocratic method. CONCLUSION: The Prakash's method for reducing anterior shoulder dislocation requires minimum assistance with no anesthesia, it is safe, less time consuming, has a high success rate, less pain, and has minimal complications. &nbsp

With time viral infections are increasing day by day due to various reasons like new viruses, the resistance of viruses to antiviral therapy, and mutation of one form of the virus to another form; these types of problems create many challenges in the field of research. Furthermore, a lot of challenges are encountered in the treatment of antiviral therapy, like interaction with other medication and use of increased frequency and a high dose of antiviral due to infection in CNS or synovial fluid where drug permeation is less. Consequently, toxicity and other side effect chances will be more. Nano-technological approaches are used to overcome these challenges. The beneficial properties come from such engineering, including stimuli sensitivity, targetability, and longevity; these are all combined to give multifunctional nano-carriers that concurrently execute different beneficial tasks
