Metastructures are engineered systems composed of periodic arrays of identical components, called resonators, designed to achieve specific dynamic effects, such as creating a band gap-a frequency range where waves cannot propagate through the structure. When equipped with patches of piezoelectric material, these metastructures exhibit an additional capability: they can harvest energy effectively even from frequencies much lower than the fundamental frequency of an individual resonator. This energy harvesting capability is particularly valuable for applications where low-frequency vibrations dominate. To support the design of metastructures for dual purposes, such as energy harvesting and vibration suppression (reducing unwanted oscillations in the structure), we develop a multi-patch isogeometric model of a piezoelectric energy harvester. This model is based on a piezoelectric Kirchhoff-Love plate-a thin, flexible structure with embedded piezoelectric patches-and uses Nitsche's method to enforce compatibility conditions in terms of displacement, rotations, shear force, and bending moments across the boundaries of different patches. The model is validated against experimental and numerical data from the literature. We then present a novel, parameterized metastructure plate design and conduct a parametric study to explore how resonator geometries affect key performance metrics, including the location and width of the band gap and the position of the first peak in the voltage frequency response function. This model can be integrated with optimization algorithms to maximize outcomes such as energy harvesting efficiency or vibration reduction, depending on application needs.

We propose LightLLM, a model that fine tunes pre-trained large language models (LLMs) for light-based sensing tasks. It integrates a sensor data encoder to extract key features, a contextual prompt to provide environmental information, and a fusion layer to combine these inputs into a unified representation. This combined input is then processed by the pre-trained LLM, which remains frozen while being fine-tuned through the addition of lightweight, trainable components, allowing the model to adapt to new tasks without altering its original parameters. This approach enables flexible adaptation of LLM to specialized light sensing tasks with minimal computational overhead and retraining effort. We have implemented LightLLM for three light sensing tasks: light-based localization, outdoor solar forecasting, and indoor solar estimation. Using real-world experimental datasets, we demonstrate that LightLLM significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods, achieving 4.4x improvement in localization accuracy and 3.4x improvement in indoor solar estimation when tested in previously unseen environments. We further demonstrate that LightLLM outperforms ChatGPT-4 with direct prompting, highlighting the advantages of LightLLM's specialized architecture for sensor data fusion with textual prompts., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables

Passive visible light communication (VLC) modulates light propagation or reflection to transmit data without directly modulating the light source. Thus, passive VLC provides an alternative to conventional VLC, enabling communication where the light source cannot be directly controlled. There have been ongoing efforts to explore new methods and devices for modulating light propagation or reflection. The state-of-the-art has broken the 100 kbps data rate barrier for passive VLC by using a digital micro-mirror device (DMD) as the light modulating platform, or transmitter, and a photo-diode as the receiver. We significantly extend this work by proposing a massive spatial data channel framework for DMDs, where individual channels can be decoded in parallel using an event camera at the receiver. For the event camera, we introduce event processing algorithms to detect numerous channels and decode bits from individual channels with high reliability. Our prototype, built with off-the-shelf event cameras and DMDs, can decode up to $\sim$2,000 parallel channels, achieving a data transmission rate of 1.6 Mbps, markedly surpassing current benchmarks by 16x., Comment: 14 pages, 21 figures, nonacm

The use of automotive radars is gaining popularity as a means to enhance a vehicle's sensing capabilities. However, these radars can suffer from interference caused by transmissions from other radars mounted on nearby vehicles. To address this issue, we investigate the use of an onboard intelligent reflective surface (IRS) to artificially increase a vehicle's effective radar cross section (RCS), or its "electromagnetic visibility." Our proposed method utilizes the IRS's ability to form a coherent reflection of the incident radar waveform back towards the source radar, thereby improving radar performance under interference. We evaluated both passive and active IRS options. Passive IRS, which does not support reflection amplification, was found to be counter-productive and actually decreased the vehicle's effective RCS instead of enhancing it. In contrast, active IRS, which can amplify the reflection power of individual elements, effectively combats all types of automotive radar interference when the reflective elements are configured with a 15-35 dB reflection gain., Comment: 7 pages, 9 Figures

The current battery-powered fault detection system for vibration monitoring has a rather limited lifetime. This is because the high-frequency sampling (typically tens of kilo-Hertz) required for vibration monitoring results in high energy consumption in both the analog-to-digital (ADC) converter and wireless transmissions. This paper proposes a new fault detection architecture that can significantly reduce the energy consumption of the ADC and wireless transmission. Our inspiration for the new architecture is based on the observation that the many tens of thousand of data samples collected for fault detection are ultimately transformed into a small number of features. If we can generate these features directly without high frequency sampling, then we can avoid the the energy cost for ADC and wireless transmissions. We propose to use piezoelectric energy harvesters (which can be designed to have different frequency responses) and integrators to obtain these features in an energy-efficient manner. By using a publicly available data set for ball bearing fault detection (which was originally sampled at 51.2kHz) and piezoelectric energy harvester models, we can produce features, which when sampled at 0.33Hz, give a fault detection accuracy of 89% while reducing the sampling requirement by 4 orders-of-magnitude., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

Piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEHs) can be used as an additional power supply for a Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system. Its design can be optimised for the best performance; however, the optimal design depends on the input vibration, e.g. acceleration of a bridge due to wind loads and passing traffic. In previous studies, we have shown that optimal design tunes to some predominant frequency of the signal spectrum. However, our previous study was limited to a single location of a PEH on a bridge. In this work, we extend the rigorous optimisation framework to include the effect of the PEH's location. The optimisation framework uses the PEH plate model discretised by IsoGeometric Analysis (IGA) and coupled with the Particle Swarm Optimisation algorithm to find the designs with maximum energy outputs for many acceleration histories, extracted from the recorded dynamic response data of a real cable-stayed bridge in Australia. Then, clustering is performed to find several best candidates for the entire bridge. An additional study is performed to quantify the effect of traffic intensity on the produced energy. It is shown that variation in traffic volume throughout the 24hr time window leads to variation in optimal PEH designs. The study concludes the impact of location and traffic on energy harvesting by identifying the optimal PEH design and placement throughout the bridge structure. The results indicate that the key factors of maximising energy harvesting efficiency are related to the input excitation and the mode of vibration being excited. The position of maximum displacement in the vibration mode corresponds to the best location for energy harvesting. Also, the change in traffic intensity affects the amount of convertible mechanical energy and also directs the fundamental frequency of a PEH to shift within a specific range of frequencies to achieve the highest energy conversion.

For indoor settings, we investigate the impact of location on the spectral distribution of the received light, i.e., the intensity of light for different wavelengths. Our investigations confirm that even under the same light source, different locations exhibit slightly different spectral distribution due to reflections from their localised environment containing different materials or colours. By exploiting this observation, we propose Spectral-Loc, a novel indoor localization system that uses light spectral information to identify the location of the device. With spectral sensors finding their way in latest products and applications, such as white balancing in smartphone photography, Spectral-Loc can be readily deployed without requiring any additional hardware or infrastructure. We prototype Spectral-Loc using a commercial-off-the-shelf light spectral sensor, AS7265x, which can measure light intensity over 18 different wavelength sub-bands. We benchmark the localisation accuracy of Spectral-Loc against the conventional light intensity sensors that provide only a single intensity value. Our evaluations over two different indoor spaces, a meeting room and a large office space, demonstrate that use of light spectral information significantly reduces the localization error for the different percentiles., Comment: 14 pages, 17 figures, 4 tables

Piezoelectric Energy Harvesters (PEHs) are typically employed to provide additional source of energy for a sensing system. However, studies show that a PEH can be also used as a sensor to acquire information about the source of vibration by analysing the produced voltage signal. This opens a possibility to create Simultaneous Energy Harvesting and Sensing (SEHS) system, where a single piece of hardware, a PEH, acts as both, a harvester and as a sensor. This raises a question if it is possible to design a bi-functional PEH device with optimal harvesting and sensing performance. In this work, we propose a bi-objective PEH design optimisation framework and show that there is a trade-off between energy harvesting efficiency and sensing accuracy within a PEH design space. The proposed framework is based on an extensive vibration (strain and acceleration) dataset collected from a real-world operational cable-stayed bridge in New South Wales, Australia. The bridge acceleration data is used as an input for a PEH numerical model to simulate a voltage signal and estimate the amount of produced energy. The numerical PEH model is based on the Kirchhoff-Love plate and isogeometric analysis. For sensing, convolutional neural network AlexNet is trained to identify traffic speed labels from voltage CWT (Continuous Wavelet Transform) images. In order to improve computational efficiency of the approach, a kriging metamodel is built and genetic algorithm is used as an optimisation method. The results are presented in the form of Pareto fronts in three design spaces.

Vibrational energy harvested from the bridge excitation due to the traffic flow or the wind load can be supplied to sensors in a Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system and help prolong its service life, reduce chemical battery waste and enable its use in remote locations. A common approach to designing a Piezoelectric Energy Harvester (PEH) consists in tuning its fundamental frequency to some target value (e.g., the fundamental frequency of a bridge). However, such approach does not answer the question if the chosen target frequency is optimal, and does not take into account the possibility to have multiple design configurations with the same fundamental frequency. In this work, we approach the problem of a PEH design optimisation in a rigorous way, using a PEH model based on the Kirchhoff-Love plate theory and Isogeometric Analysis (IGA), coupled with the Modal Order Reduction (MOR) approach and Runge-Kutta time integration method. The model is further equipped with the Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) algorithm that allows finding geometry which maximises energy output from a given base acceleration signal. A comprehensive study is conducted to infer the impact of a PEH geometry on its energy harvesting performance in a real-world setting by considering field health monitoring data of a large-scale cable-stayed bridge in NSW, Australia. A shape optimisation framework is developed based on acceleration events, i.e., where the level of response exceeds a certain threshold. Designs obtained in the event-based optimisation are then clustered to propose several best candidates for continuous energy generation. This work represents the first study on PEH design optimisation for real operational conditions.

For UAV-aided wireless systems, online path planning attracts much attention recently. To better adapt to the real-time dynamic environment, we, for the first time, propose a Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS)-based path planning scheme. In details, we consider a single UAV acts as a mobile server to provide computation tasks offloading services for a set of mobile users on the ground, where the movement of ground users follows a Random Way Point model. Our model aims at maximizing the average throughput under energy consumption and user fairness constraints, and the proposed timesaving MCTS algorithm can further improve the performance. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves a larger average throughput and a faster convergence performance compared with the baseline algorithms of Q-learning and Deep Q-Network.

In this paper, we show how the absorption and re-radiation energy from molecules in the air can influence the Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) performance in high-frequency bands, e.g., millimeter wave (mmWave) and terahertz. In more detail, some common atmosphere molecules, such as oxygen and water, can absorb and re-radiate energy in their natural resonance frequencies, such as 60 GHz, 180 GHz and 320 GHz. Hence, when hit by electromagnetic waves, molecules will get excited and absorb energy, which leads to an extra path loss and is known as molecular attenuation. Meanwhile, the absorbed energy will be re-radiated towards a random direction with a random phase. These re-radiated waves also interfere with the signal transmission. Although, the molecular re-radiation was mostly considered as noise in literature, recent works show that it is correlated to the main signal and can be viewed as a composition of multiple delayed or scattered signals. Such a phenomenon can provide non-line-of-sight (NLoS) paths in an environment that lacks scatterers, which increases spatial multiplexing and thus greatly enhances the performance of MIMO systems. Therefore in this paper, we explore the scattering model and noise models of molecular re-radiation to characterize the channel transfer function of the NLoS channels created by atmosphere molecules. Our simulation results show that the re-radiation can increase MIMO capacity up to 3 folds in mmWave and 6 folds in terahertz for a set of realistic transmit power, distance, and antenna numbers. We also show that in the high SNR, the re-radiation makes the open-loop precoding viable, which is an alternative to beamforming to avoid beam alignment sensitivity in high mobility applications.

While decade-long research has clearly demonstrated the vast potential of radio frequency (RF) for many human sensing tasks, scaling this technology to large scenarios remained problematic with conventional approaches. Recently, researchers have successfully applied deep learning to take radio-based sensing to a new level. Many different types of deep learning models have been proposed to achieve high sensing accuracy over a large population and activity set, as well as in unseen environments. Deep learning has also enabled detection of novel human sensing phenomena that were previously not possible. In this survey, we provide a comprehensive review and taxonomy of recent research efforts on deep learning based RF sensing. We also identify and compare several publicly released labeled RF sensing datasets that can facilitate such deep learning research. Finally, we summarize the lessons learned and discuss the current limitations and future directions of deep learning based RF sensing.

Piezoelectric energy harvester, which generates electricity from stress or vibrations, is gaining increasing attention as a viable solution to extend battery life in wearables. Recent research further reveals that, besides generating energy, PEH can also serve as a passive sensor to detect human gait power-efficiently because its stress or vibration patterns are significantly influenced by the gait. However, as PEHs are not designed for precise measurement of motion, achievable gait recognition accuracy remains low with conventional classification algorithms. The accuracy deteriorates further when the generated electricity is stored simultaneously. To classify gait reliably while simultaneously storing generated energy, we make two distinct contributions. First, we propose a preprocessing algorithm to filter out the effect of energy storage on PEH electricity signal. Second, we propose a long short-term memory (LSTM) network-based classifier to accurately capture temporal information in gait-induced electricity generation. We prototype the proposed gait recognition architecture in the form factor of an insole and evaluate its gait recognition as well as energy harvesting performance with 20 subjects. We explore the feasibility of Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) communication through vibrations over human skin. Using off-the-shelf motors and piezo transducers as vibration transmitters and receivers, respectively, we build a 2x2 MIMO testbed to collect and analyze vibration signals from real subjects. Our analysis reveals that there exist multiple independent vibration channels between a pair of transmitter and receiver, confirming the feasibility of MIMO. Unfortunately, the slow ramping of mechanical motors and rapidly changing skin channels make it impractical for conventional channel sounding based channel state information (CSI) acquisition, which is critical for achieving MIMO capacity gains. To solve this problem, we propose Skin-MIMO, a deep learning based CSI acquisition technique to accurately predict CSI entirely based on inertial sensor (accelerometer and gyroscope) measurements at the transmitter, thus obviating the need for channel sounding. Based on experimental vibration data, we show that Skin-MIMO can improve MIMO capacity by a factor of 2.3 compared to Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) or open-loop MIMO, which do not have access to CSI. A surprising finding is that gyroscope, which measures the angular velocity, is found to be superior in predicting skin vibrations than accelerometer, which measures linear acceleration and used widely in previous research for vibration communications over solid objects.

Intelligent reflective surfaces (IRSs) capable of reconfiguring their electromagnetic absorption and reflection properties in real-time are offering unprecedented opportunities to enhance wireless communication experience in challenging environments. In this paper, we analyze the potential of IRS in enhancing cellular communications for UAVs, which currently suffers from poor signal strength due to the down-tilt of base station antennas optimized to serve ground users. We consider deployment of IRS on building walls, which can be remotely configured by cellular base stations to coherently direct the reflected radio waves towards specific UAVs in order to increase their received signal strengths. Using the recently released 3GPP ground-to-air channel models, we analyze the signal gains at UAVs due to the IRS deployments as a function of UAV height as well as various IRS parameters including size, altitude, and distance from base station. Our analysis suggests that even with a small IRS, we can achieve significant signal gain for UAVs flying above the cellular base station. With the growing number of deployments of Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure for a wide variety of applications, the battery maintenance has become a major limitation for the sustainability of such infrastructure. To overcome this problem, energy harvesting offers a viable alternative to autonomously power IoT devices, resulting in a number of battery-less energy harvesting IoTs (or EH-IoTs) appearing in the market in recent years. Standards activities are also underway, which involve wireless protocol design suitable for EH-IoTs as well as testing procedures for various energy harvesting methods. Despite the early commercial and standards activities, IoT sensing, computing and communications under unpredictable power supply still face significant research challenges. This paper systematically surveys recent advances in EH-IoTs from several perspectives. First, it reviews the recent commercial developments for EH-IoT in terms of both products and services, followed by initial standards activities in this space. Then it surveys methods that enable the use of energy harvesting hardware as a proxy for conventional sensors to detect contexts in energy efficient manner. Next it reviews the advancements in efficient checkpointing and timekeeping for intermittently powered IoT devices. We also survey recent research in novel wireless communication techniques for EH-IoTs, such as the applications of reinforcement learning to optimize power allocations on-the-fly under unpredictable energy productions, and packet-less IoT communications and backscatter communication techniques for energy impoverished environments. We present Heartbeats-2-Bits (H2B), which is a system for securely pairing wearable devices by generating a shared secret key from the skin vibrations caused by heartbeat. This work is motivated by potential power saving opportunity arising from the fact that heartbeat intervals can be detected energy-efficiently using inexpensive and power-efficient piezo sensors, which obviates the need to employ complex heartbeat monitors such as Electrocardiogram or Photoplethysmogram. Indeed, our experiments show that piezo sensors can measure heartbeat intervals on many different body locations including chest, wrist, waist, neck and ankle. Unfortunately, we also discover that the heartbeat interval signal captured by piezo vibration sensors has low Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) because they are not designed as precision heartbeat monitors, which becomes the key challenge for H2B. To overcome this problem, we first apply a quantile function-based quantization method to fully extract the useful entropy from the noisy piezo measurements. We then propose a novel Compressive Sensing-based reconciliation method to correct the high bit mismatch rates between the two independently generated keys caused by low SNR. We prototype H2B using off-the-shelf piezo sensors and evaluate its performance on a dataset collected from different body positions of 23 participants. Our results show that H2B has an overwhelming pairing success rate of 95.6%. We also analyze and demonstrate H2B's robustness against three types of attacks. Finally, our power measurements show that H2B is very power-efficient.

Time difference of arrival (TDOA) is a widely used technique for localizing a radio transmitter from the difference in signal arrival times at multiple receivers. For TDOA to work, the individual receivers must estimate the respective signal arrival times precisely, which requires sampling the signal at least double the rate of its highest frequency content, commonly known as the Nyquist rate. Such sampling is less practical for the millimeter wave band comprising of frequencies in 30-300 GHz range. In this paper, we propose an energy detection architecture for accurately estimating the time of arrival from a single picosecond Gaussian pulse, which enables TDOA localization without sampling at the receiver. We derive the closed form expression of the estimated time of arrival and validate it via simulation. We design a system, SolarGest, which can recognize hand gestures near a solar-powered device by analyzing the patterns of the photocurrent. SolarGest is based on the observation that each gesture interferes with incident light rays on the solar panel in a unique way, leaving its distinguishable signature in harvested photocurrent. Using solar energy harvesting laws, we develop a model to optimize design and usage of SolarGest. To further improve the robustness of SolarGest under non-deterministic operating conditions, we combine dynamic time warping with Z-score transformation in a signal processing pipeline to pre-process each gesture waveform before it is analyzed for classification. We evaluate SolarGest with both conventional opaque solar cells as well as emerging see-through transparent cells. Our experiments with 6,960 gesture samples for 6 different gestures reveal that even with transparent cells, SolarGest can detect 96% of the gestures while consuming 44% less power compared to light sensor based systems., Comment: 15 pages, 20 figures, 4 tables, MobiCom 2019

The terahertz band is considered the last frontier for wireless communications and expected to play a significant role in beyond 5G networks. Besides supporting extremely high data rates for existing devices, the terahertz band is also expected to connect future nanoscale devices using graphene-based nano-antenna, which happens to radiate in 0.1-10 THz band. In this band, higher order derivatives of Gaussian pulses can provide energy-efficient communication for nanodevices. In this paper, we propose a metric, called root mean square (RMS) frequency spread, to detect the derivative order of the pulse at the receiving base station using uniform linear array antennas. Simulation experiments demonstrate that RMS frequency spread can be used to detect the derivative order of Gaussian pulses with 99% accuracy for distances up to 50 cm. The rapid growth of consumer Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is creating promising new business opportunities for cellular operators. On the one hand, UAVs can be connected to cellular networks as new types of user equipment, therefore generating significant revenues for the operators that can guarantee their stringent service requirements. On the other hand, UAVs offer the unprecedented opportunity to realize UAV-mounted flying base stations that can dynamically reposition themselves to boost coverage, spectral efficiency, and user quality of experience. Indeed, the standardization bodies are currently exploring possibilities for serving commercial UAVs with cellular networks. Industries are beginning to trial early prototypes of flying base stations or user equipments, while academia is in full swing researching mathematical and algorithmic solutions to address interesting new problems arising from flying nodes in cellular networks. In this article, we provide a comprehensive survey of all of these developments promoting smooth integration of UAVs into cellular networks. Advancements in nanotechnology promises new capabilities for Internet of Things (IoT) to monitor extremely fine-grained events by deploying sensors as small as a few hundred nanometers. Researchers predict that such tiny sensors can transmit wireless data using graphene-based nano-antenna radiating in the terahertz band (0.1-10 THz). Powering such wireless communications with nanoscale energy supply, however, is a major challenge to overcome. In this paper, we propose an energy efficient event monitoring framework for nano IoT that enables nanosensors to update a remote base station about the location and type of the detected event using only a single short pulse. Nanosensors encode different events using different center frequencies with non overlapping half power bandwidth over the entire terahertz band. Using uniform linear array (ULA) antenna, the base station localizes the events by estimating the direction of arrival of the pulse and classifies them from the center frequency estimated by spectral centroid of the received signal. Simulation results confirm that, from a distance of 1 meter, a 6th derivative Gaussian pulse consuming only 1 atto Joule can achieve localization and classification accuracies of 1.58 degree and 98.8%, respectively., Comment: 6 pages, 18 Figures, accepted for publication in IEEE GLOBECOM Conference 2018

The 30-300GHz millimeter wave (mmWave) band is currently being pursued to combat the rising capacity demands in 5G, WiFi, and IoT networks. Due to the high frequency, impulse radio (IR) in this band is better suited for positioning than other existing low-frequency bands. Besides precision positioning, the exceptionally wide bandwidth also enables concurrent use of multiple center frequencies in the same application, which opens up additional avenues of information encoding in IR mmWave networks. In this paper, we propose a new mmWave IR framework that can simultaneously detect direction of arrival (DOA) as well as the center frequency of the transmitted pulse. Based on the emerging graphene-based transceivers, we evaluate the performance of the proposed framework in the higher frequency region of mmWave band (100-300GHz). Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed framework can detect the DOA of a 0.1 $\mu$Watt mmWave pulse within 1 degree of precision at 20 meters, and classify three different center frequencies with 100% accuracy from a distance of 10 meters. Nanoscale wireless sensor networks (NWSNs) could be within reach soon using graphene-based antennas, which resonate in 0.1-10 terahertz band. To conserve the limited energy available at nanoscale, it is expected that NWSNs will communicate using extremely short pulses on the order of femtoseconds. Accurate estimation of direction of arrival (DOA) for such terahertz pulses will help realize many useful applications for NWSNs. In this paper, using the well-known MUltiple SIgnal Classification (MUSIC) algorithm, we study DOA estimation for NWSNs for different energy levels, distances, pulse shapes, and frequencies. Our analyses reveal that the best DOA estimation is achieved with the first order Gaussian pulses, which emit their peak energy at 6 THz. Monitoring the daily transportation modes of an individual provides useful information in many application domains, such as urban design, real-time journey recommendation, as well as providing location-based services. In existing systems, accelerometer and GPS are the dominantly used signal sources for transportation context monitoring which drain out the limited battery life of the wearable devices very quickly. To resolve the high energy consumption issue, in this paper, we present EnTrans, which enables transportation mode detection by using only the kinetic energy harvester as an energy-efficient signal source. The proposed idea is based on the intuition that the vibrations experienced by the passenger during traveling with different transportation modes are distinctive. Thus, voltage signal generated by the energy harvesting devices should contain sufficient features to distinguish different transportation modes. We evaluate our system using over 28 hours of data, which is collected by eight individuals using a practical energy harvesting prototype. The evaluation results demonstrate that EnTrans is able to achieve an overall accuracy over 92% in classifying five different modes while saving more than 34% of the system power compared to conventional accelerometer-based approaches.

We propose a novel use of the conventional energy storage component, i.e., capacitor, in kinetic-powered wearable IoTs as a sensor to detect human activities. Since different activities accumulate energies in the capacitor at different rates, these activities can be detected directly by observing the charging rate of the capacitor. The key advantage of the proposed capacitor based activity sensing mechanism, called CapSense, is that it obviates the need for sampling the motion signal during the activity detection period thus significantly saving power consumption of the wearable device. A challenge we face is that capacitors are inherently non-linear energy accumulators, which, even for the same activity, leads to significant variations in charging rates at different times depending on the current charge level of the capacitor. We solve this problem by jointly configuring the parameters of the capacitor and the associated energy harvesting circuits, which allows us to operate on charging cycles that are approximately linear. We design and implement a kinetic-powered shoe sole and conduct experiments with 10 subjects. Our results show that CapSense can classify five different daily activities with 95% accuracy while consuming 73% less system power compared to conventional motion signal based activity detection.

In this paper, the deployment of drone base stations to provide higher performance in the cellular networks is analyzed. In particular, we investigate a new mobility model for drone base stations where they can move freely in the network, ignoring the cell boundaries. Free movement model for drones bring out new challenges such as user association and physical collision among drones. We consider two user association schemes and evaluate their performance through simulation. We show that by deploying a smart user association scheme in the free movement model, the obtained results are greatly better than those restricting each drone base station to fly over a certain small cell area, and serving local users. Additionally, the impact of drones' movement on the load balance, signal strength and interference are studied. In this paper, we compare the performance of two main MIMO techniques, beamforming and multiplexing, in the Terahertz (THz) band. The main problem with the THz band is its huge propagation loss, which is caused by the tremendous signal attenuation due to molecule absorption of the electro-magnetic wave. To overcome the path loss issue, massive MIMO has been suggested to be employed in the network and is expected to provide Tbps for a distance within a few meters. In this context, beamforming is studied recently as the main technique to take advantage of MIMO in THz and overcome the very high path loss with the assumption that the THz communication channel is Line-of-Sight (LoS) and there are not significant multipath rays. On the other hand, recent studies also showed that the well-known absorbed energy by molecules can be re-radiated immediately in the same frequency. Such re-radiated signal is correlated with the main signal and can provide rich scattering paths for the communication channel. This means that a significant MIMO multiplexing gain can be achieved even in a LoS scenario for the THz band. Our simulation results reveal a surprising observation that the MIMO multiplexing could be a better choice than the MIMO beamforming under certain conditions in THz communications.

In this paper, we present a new theoretical discovery that the multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) capacity can be influenced by atmosphere molecules. In more detail, some common atmosphere molecules, such as Oxygen and water, can absorb and re-radiate energy in their natural resonance frequencies, such as 60GHz, 120GHz, and 180GHz, which belong to the millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum. Such phenomenon can provide equivalent non-line-of-sight (NLoS) paths in an environment that lacks scatterers, and thus greatly improve the spatial multiplexing and diversity of a MIMO system. This kind of performance improvement is particularly useful for most mmWave communications that heavily rely on line-of-sight (LoS) transmissions. To sum up, our study concludes that since the molecular re-radiation happens at certain mmWave frequency bands, the MIMO capacity becomes highly frequency selective and enjoys a considerable boosting at those mmWave frequency bands. The impact of our new discovery is significant, which fundamentally changes our understanding on the relationship between the MIMO capacity and the frequency spectrum. In particular, our results predict that several mmWave bands can serve as valuable spectrum windows for high-efficiency MIMO communications, which in turn may shift the paradigm of research, standardization, and implementation in the field of mmWave communications., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1710.09031

We study a cellular networking scenario, called DroneCells, where miniaturized base stations (BSs) are mounted on flying drones to serve mobile users. We propose that the drones never stop, and move continuously within the cell in a way that reduces the distance between the BS and the serving users, thus potentially improving the spectral efficiency of the network. By considering the practical mobility constraints of commercial drones, we design drone mobility algorithms to improve the spectral efficiency of DroneCells. As the optimal problem is NP-hard, we propose a range of practically realizable heuristics with varying complexity and performance. Simulations show that, using the existing consumer drones, the proposed algorithms can readily improve spectral efficiency by 34\% and the 5-percentile packet throughput by 50\% compared to the scenario, where drones hover over fixed locations. More significant gains can be expected with more agile drones in the future. A surprising outcome is that the drones need to fly only at minimal speeds to achieve these gains, avoiding any negative effect on drone battery lifetime. With recent advancements in drone technology, researchers are now considering the possibility of deploying small cells served by base stations mounted on flying drones. A major advantage of such drone small cells is that the operators can quickly provide cellular services in areas of urgent demand without having to pre-install any infrastructure. Since the base station is attached to the drone, technically it is feasible for the base station to dynamic reposition itself in response to the changing locations of users for reducing the communication distance, decreasing the probability of signal blocking, and ultimately increasing the spectral efficiency. In this paper, we first propose distributed algorithms for autonomous control of drone movements, and then model and analyse the spectral efficiency performance of a drone small cell to shed new light on the fundamental benefits of dynamic repositioning. Thanks to the recent advancements in drone technology, it has become viable and cost-effective to quickly deploy small cells in areas of urgent needs by using a drone as a cellular base station. In this paper, we explore the benefit of dynamically repositioning the drone base station in the air to reduce the distance between the BS and the mobile user equipment, thereby improving the spectral efficiency of the small cell. In particular, we propose algorithms to autonomously control the repositioning of the drone in response to users activities and movements. We demonstrate that, compared to a drone hovering at a fixed location, dynamic repositioning of the drone moving with high speed can increase spectral efficiency by 15\%. However, considering the tradeoff between spectral efficiency and energy efficiency of the drone, we show that 10.5\% spectral efficiency gain can be obtained without negatively affecting energy consumption of the drone., Comment: 6 pages, to appear in IEEE Globecom Workshop 2016
