1. Constitutionalization of environmental relations in Russia: Formation and development

Abstract

Introduction: The formation and development of constitutional norms of the protection of nature and the environment is an important condition for creating the favorable environment in the interests of present and future generations. An analysis of the evolution of this process will allow us to trace legal trends in this area and further prospects for constitutionalization of environmental relations. Theoretical analysis. The analysis of the genesis of constitutionalization of environmental relations in Russia has shown that this process has followed the path of recognition of environmental human rights and establishment of environmental responsibilities, which is an important constitutional and legal security measure aimed at creating the favorable environment, ensuring environmental rights of citizens, and acts as an indicator demonstrating the willingness of the state to ensure environmental safety of Russia. Empirical analysis. The development of the process of constitutionalization of environmental relations in Russia is carried out, among other things, through amendments to the Constitution of the Russian Federation. It is concluded that these amendments will not have an immediate positive effect, but they are still a positive trend towards constitutionalization of environmental relations, an “ecological investment in the future”, aimed at forming ecological culture, consolidating positive environmental traditions. Conclusion. Despite the existence of constitutional provisions for environmental protection and a large body of environmental legislation formed on the basis of constitutional prescriptions, Russia has not been able to solve environmental problems so far. Therefore, it is concluded that Russia, despite the legal evolution of environmental relations to the extent of their constitutionalization, cannot yet be called an “ecological state”, since an effective ecological and legal mechanism for implementing constitutional requirements in this area must be created for this purpose.

Abstract

In the last decade, advancements in attosecond spectroscopy have allowed us to study electron motion dynamics in condensed matter. The access to these electron dynamics and, consequently, its control by an ultrafast light field paves the way for establishing ultrafast optoelectronics. Here, we report the generation of light-induced quantum tunnelling current in graphene phototransistors by ultrafast laser pulses in an ambient environment. This tunnelling effect provides access to the instantaneous field-driven current to demonstrate the current switching (ON and OFF) on a 630 attosecond (1.6 petahertz speed). Moreover, we controlled the tunnelling current and enhanced the graphene phototransistor conductivity by controlling the density of the photoexcited charge carriers at different pump laser powers. Furthermore, we exploited this capability to demonstrate various logic gates. The demonstrated light-induced tunnelling current and ultrafast switching were attained under standard room temperature and pressure conditions. Therefore, the presented scientific advancement in this work is at the technology readiness level suitable for its immediate integration into the development of ultrafast, nearly six orders of magnitude faster, optical transistors, lightwave electronics, and optical quantum computers., Comment: 24 pages and 4 figures

Abstract

The electron motion in atoms and molecules is at the heart of all phenomena in nature that occur outside the nucleus. Recently, ultrafast electron and X-ray imaging tools have been developed to image the ultrafast dynamics of matter in real time and space. The cutting-edge temporal resolution of these imaging tools is on the order of a few tens to a hundred femtoseconds, limiting imaging to atomic dynamics. Hence electron motion imaging remains beyond the reach. Here, we achieved attosecond electron imaging temporal resolution in a transmission electron microscope, orders of magnitude faster than the highest reported imaging resolution, to demonstrate, which we coin it as (attomicroscopy) to image the field-induced electron dynamics in neutral multilayer graphene. Our results show that the electron motion between the carbon atoms in graphene is due to the field-driven electron dynamics in the conduction band and depends on the field waveform, strength, and polarization direction. This attomicroscopy imaging provides more insights into the electron motion of neutral matter in real time and space and would have long-anticipated real-life attosecond science applications in quantum physics, chemistry, and biology.

Abstract

With numerous medical tasks, the performance of deep models has recently experienced considerable improvements. These models are often adept learners. Yet, their intricate architectural design and high computational complexity make deploying them in clinical settings challenging, particularly with devices with limited resources. To deal with this issue, Knowledge Distillation (KD) has been proposed as a compression method and an acceleration technology. KD is an efficient learning strategy that can transfer knowledge from a burdensome model (i.e., teacher model) to a lightweight model (i.e., student model). Hence we can obtain a compact model with low parameters with preserving the teacher's performance. Therefore, we develop a KD-based deep model for prostate MRI segmentation in this work by combining features-based distillation with Kullback-Leibler divergence, Lovasz, and Dice losses. We further demonstrate its effectiveness by applying two compression procedures: 1) distilling knowledge to a student model from a single well-trained teacher, and 2) since most of the medical applications have a small dataset, we train multiple teachers that each one trained with a small set of images to learn an adaptive student model as close to the teachers as possible considering the desired accuracy and fast inference time. Extensive experiments were conducted on a public multi-site prostate tumor dataset, showing that the proposed adaptation KD strategy improves the dice similarity score by 9%, outperforming all tested well-established baseline models.

Abstract

Introduction: The thyroid gland is a crucial endocrine organ that can be susceptible to various pathological conditions, often necessitating total thyroidectomy or lobectomy. It is a common surgical procedure in Saudi Arabia. Thus, it is essential to recognize the impact of thyroid surgery on patients’ health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate HRQoL among patients with benign and malignant thyroid diseases who underwent thyroidectomy in the eastern region of Saudi Arabia. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at King Fahad Hospital of University in Khobar, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from January 2018 to May 2018. The data collection method used was divided into two parts. Part I included the patients’ socio-demographic characteristics and the clinical characteristics of their thyroid surgery. Part II was a HRQoL questionnaire (SF-36, version 1.0). Results: The sample included 100 thyroidectomy patients ≥18 years. The study findings revealed that the overall scores for post-thyroidectomy patients showed a significant improvement in HRQoL, and HRQoL was not significantly associated with benign or malignant thyroid diseases. Conclusion: Especially when the surgery is performed by a high-volume endocrine surgeon, thyroidectomy may lead to significant improvements in HRQoL among patients, including the elderly and younger adults, with benign and malignant thyroid disorders. There was no difference in HRQoL between patients who underwent total thyroidectomy or thyroid lobectomy. Also, HRQol among thyroidectomy patients is associated with their educational and occupational statuses.

Abstract

Governments around the world have issued movement restrictions and quarantines to combat the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic. However, the Swedish government has not implemented such measures but has depended on individual responsibility. The extent to which individuals have been encouraged to trust in and be satisfied with government strategies and adopt personal health measures, such as social isolation, remains unclear. This study examines the direct effects of trust in the government and risk perception on self-efficacy. Most importantly, this study intends to explore whether satisfaction with government measures strengthens the relationships between 1) trust in the government and self-efficacy and 2) risk perception and self-efficacy. We test our suggested hypotheses using survey data obtained from 403 Swedish citizens living in Sweden. As predicted, the findings indicate that trust in the government and risk perception positively impact individual self-efficacy. Additionally, the findings reveal that satisfaction with government measures strengthens these relationships; more precisely, the impact of trust in the government and risk perception under a high level of individual satisfaction with government measures is much more positive than that under a low satisfaction level. 34. Attosecond light field synthesis for electron motion control

Abstract

The advancement of the ultrafast pulse shaping and waveform synthesis allowed to coherently control the atomic and electronic motions in matter. The temporal resolution of the waveform synthesis is inversely proportional to the broadening of its spectrum. Here, we demonstrate the light field synthesis of high-power waveforms spanning two optical octaves, from near-infrared (NIR) to deep-ultraviolet (DUV) with attosecond resolution. Moreover, we utilized the all-optical field sampling metrology for on-demand tailoring of light field waveforms to control the electron motion in matter. The demonstrated synthesis of the light field and the electron motion control pave the way for switching the photo-induced current signal in dielectric nanocircuit and establishing ultrafast photonics operating beyond the petahertz speed.

Abstract

Mathematics anxiety (MA) has a debilitating impact on learning, achievement, mental health, and the future career life of students. Though MA is a popular research theme, there is little agreement among researchers regarding the cross-cultural effect of gender. The purpose of this paper was to explore the perceived MA differences among males and females across cultures using the Anxiety Towards Math Scale (ATMS; Muñoz and Mato, 2007). Data were collected between October 2019 and September 2020) from students (N = 4,340) in 12 countries. Using univariate analysis of variance, the results indicate that gender has a significant main effect on MA with females recording higher mean scores than males, [71.816 > 68.118]. Examining the interaction effect of gender and location, significant differences in MA scores exist between males and females across all locations except for Egypt, Malaysia, and Nigeria (Enugu State). Conversely, females reported significantly higher MA scores than males in the rest of the locations, except Iran (Tehran and Qom) and Pakistan (Faisalabad). Gender-based ranking of the top-three locations with high MA scores indicates that females, starting from Malaysia, Thailand (Bangkok), and Nigeria (Enugu State) ranked the highest. Similarly, males beginning from Malaysia, Nigeria (Enugu State), and Thailand (Bangkok) ranked the top-three in MA. The implications are that mathematics teachers need to adopt different culturally-appropriate and gender-focused interventions to support students with MA challenges. Though interpreting the results from this survey need to de done with caution due to the smaller community and national online samples, the role of cross-cultural gender differences in MA cannot be overlooked.

38. Remediation of heavy metals from water using modified clay-chitosan composites

Abstract

Water contamination with pollutants such as heavy metals is of significant concern because the toxicity exhibited by these metals can pose a severe threat to human health and the environment. Adsorption with the combined use of geological materials (such as clays) and biodegradable polymers (such as chitosan) seems to be a promising technique for purification of water contaminated with toxic metals. These materials not only provide a cost-benefit but are also materials derived from sustainable sources and are thus environmentally friendly. This study focuses on the preparation of functional composites (from bentonite clay and chitosan biopolymer) as cheaper, and sustainable adsorbents for effective removal of heavy metals from water. The work carried out in this thesis investigated the efficiency of mixing bentonite with two different chitosans via different preparation methods. The different forms of bentonite-chitosan (Bt-Ch), composites and beads, were prepared in the weight ratios of 90%/10%, 70%/30% and 50%/50%, and via solution blending and precipitation methods, respectively. The beads were further subdivided, identified as "beads-A" and "beads-B", and were formed by adding either bentonite suspension or bentonite powder, respectively, to solubilised chitosan solution. The composites and beads were characterised by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Subsequently, the different forms of the prepared clay-chitosan composites were investigated for their ability to remove metal ions (Pb, Pb-Cu and As) from aqueous solutions. Batch adsorption procedures (via statistical design of experiments) were used to study the removal of these metal ions. Results showed that Pb (or Pb-Cu) ions can be removed from aqueous solutions effectively. The amount of chitosan present in the adsorbent and its distribution within or outside the interlayer space of the bentonite clay was shown to have pronounced effects on the Pb (or Pb-Cu) uptake by these clay-chitosan composites, and the adsorption of Pb was significantly affected by the presence of other multi-competing ions. However, these composites showed a poor loading capacity (very low removal efficiencies) towards As ions. This led to modification of bentonite clay with chitosan and Fe(III) cations; the Fe-modified composites have demonstrated effective removal of As ions from aqueous solution. The developed Bt-Ch and Fe-modified composites exhibited good potential for re-use after five cycles of regeneration, thus, indicating their potential as cost-effective adsorbents for removal of these metal ions from both drinking and wastewater. Overall, this study provides insights and new valuable knowledge for inexpensive remediation of metal-contaminated water, especially when using composites made from cheap and sustainable materials.
