Abstract

To quantitatively assess seasonal variations in the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) in the Pacific sector of the Arctic Ocean (Canada Basin and Chukchi Sea) in 2021, water temperature, salinity, chlorophyll‐a, pCO2, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total alkalinity (TA), and nutrients were measured. During summer 2021, surface water pCO2 in our study area (315 ± 41 μatm) was undersaturated with respect to the atmosphere (404 ± 4 μatm), and the ocean was a sink for atmospheric CO2 (−10.5 ± 11.0 mmol C m−2 day−1). Using DIC, TA, and nutrients in the temperature minimum layer, we estimated the under‐ice pCO2 in the water during the previous winter and calculated changes in pCO2 (δpCO2) due to temperature changes, freshwater inflow, biological activity, and other factors (gas exchange and advection) from winter to summer. In the Chukchi Sea, biological activity and temperature changes had significant impacts on pCO2, whereas in the Canada Basin, the influx of freshwater caused a significant decrease in pCO2. Our results suggested that different types of freshwaters had different effects on pCO2, with sea ice meltwater having a greater effect on reducing pCO2 than river water or snowmelt water. We therefore emphasize the importance of freshwater type and proportion, as well as freshwater supply, for prediction of future pCO2 changes. Plain Language Summary: Assessment of the factors that cause ocean CO2 to vary is important in the Arctic Ocean, which acts as an atmospheric CO2 sink that will change significantly because of global warming. Seawater and sea ice samples were collected in the Pacific sector of the Arctic Ocean to investigate the carbonate chemistry. The partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) was lower on the sea surface than in the atmosphere during summer, and the ocean absorbed atmospheric CO2. The decreases of pCO2 from winter to summer were driven primarily by biological activity in the Chukchi Sea (partially offset by temperature increases) and by freshwater additions in the Canada Basin. Sea ice meltwater, snow meltwater, and river water had different effects on pCO2, even though all of them diluted the carbonate concentrations of surface water, because of differences in the alkalinity and carbonate chemistry among these freshwater sources. Abstract

Aims Although conventional interventions for people at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes are usually conducted face-to-face, such interventions are burdensome for health care providers. We developed a lifestyle intervention program combining lifestyle coaching via a smartphone application augmented by intermittently scanned continuous glucose monitoring without burdening health care providers. Its effectiveness for glycemic control and body weight reduction in people at risk of type 2 diabetes was investigated. Materials and Methods For this 12-week randomized unblinded trial with offline recruitment, participants with a hemoglobin A1c level of 5.6% to 6.4% or a fasting blood glucose of 110 to 125 mg/dL and body mass index (BMI) >23 kg/m2 but <40 kg/m2 were randomly assigned to the intervention group (App) and control group (C). The primary endpoint was the difference in time in range of blood glucose between 70 and 140 mg/dL (3.9-7.8 mmol/L) before and after the study period between the 2 groups. Results Among 168 patients (mean age, 48.1 years; mean BMI, 26.6 kg/m2; and male, 80.4%), 82 and 86 were assigned to the App group and C group, respectively. After 12 weeks, time in range of blood glucose at 70 to 140 mg/dL significantly improved in the App group compared with the C group (−2.6 minutes/day vs +31.5 minutes/day, P =.03). Changes in time above range did not differ, whereas time below range (blood glucose <70 mg/dL; +23.5 minutes/day vs −8.9 minutes/day, P =.02) improved in the App group. BMI (−0.26 vs −0.59, P =.017) was reduced in the App group compared with the C group. Conclusion Intervention with a smartphone app and intermittently scanned continuous glucose monitoring increased glycemic control accompanied by decreased carbohydrate intake and weight loss. Sea spray aerosol (SSA) dominates aerosol mass concentration over much of the global ocean, but few studies have assessed its contribution to aerosol TE loading, which could result in overestimates of “new” TE inputs. Low-mineral aerosol concentrations measured during the U.S. GEOTRACES Pacific Meridional Transect (GP15; 152°W, 56°N to 20°S), along with concurrent towfish sampling of surface seawater, provided an opportunity to investigate this aspect of TE biogeochemical cycling. Central Pacific Ocean surface seawater Al, V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb concentrations were combined with aerosol Na data to calculate a “recycled” SSA contribution to aerosol TE loading. Only vanadium was calculated to have a SSA contribution averaging >1% along the transect (mean of 1.5%). We derive scaling factors from previous studies on TE enrichments in the sea surface microlayer and in freshly produced SSA to assess the broader potential for SSA contributions to aerosol TE loading. Maximum applied scaling factors suggest that SSA could contribute significantly to the aerosol loading of some elements (notably V, Cu, and Pb), while for others (e.g., Fe and Al), SSA contributions largely remained <1%. Our study highlights that a lack of focused measurements of TEs in SSA limits our ability to quantify this component of marine aerosol loading and the associated potential for overestimating new TE inputs from atmospheric deposition., This research was supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) grants OCE-1756103 to C. Abstract

Background: In order to provide effective dietary guidance, it is necessary to consider dietary intake, which can change over time. This study analyzed changes in the diet of Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes over a 20-year period. Methods: We compared the results of two dietary surveys that used the food frequency questionnaire format. The first was conducted in 1996 by the Japan Diabetes Complications Study (JDCS) (n = 1509, males 53.3%), and the second in 2014–2018 by the Japan Diabetes Clinical Data Management Study (JDDM) (n = 1145, males 65.6%). Both are nationwide representative registries of outpatients with type 2 diabetes in Japan. Results: Over a 20-year period, both men and women with type 2 diabetes had a significant increase in body mass index (BMI). Nonetheless, there was only a small change in energy intake. Conversely, there was a significant increase in fat intake and thus in the fat-to-energy ratio. With regard to food groups, there was a significant increase in meat intake and a decrease in the intake of fish, soybeans/soy products, vegetables, and fruits, with a particularly significant decrease in vegetables. Conclusions: Even in Japan, an industrialized country with a stable socioeconomic environment, there were many significant changes in the dietary intake of patients with type 2 diabetes over the 20-year period.
