The paper deals with the U based compound UPt$_2$Si$_2$ (UPS). The material was first treated as a localized 5f-electron system. Later, an opposite opinion of a predominantly itinerant nature of the system was put forward. The most recent publications treat UPS as a dual material. We suggest a material specific theoretical model based on the density functional theory plus Hubbard $U$ (DFT+$U$) calculations that describes the set of fundamental ground-state properties and high magnetic field experiment. The ground state properties include antiferromagnetic magnetic structure, magnetic easy axis, and the value of the U atomic moment. The in-field experiment shows the presence of a strong metamagnetic transition for the field parallel to the easy axis in contrast to the hard field direction where such a feature is absent. On the other hand, comparable induced magnetization values are obtained for both easy and hard field directions. Within the framework of the suggested model we show that the compound possesses well-formed atomic moments built by electrons treated as delocalized. To understand the experimental high-field properties we estimate exchange energy, magnetic anisotropy energy, and Zeeman energy. All three energies are shown to have comparable values what is crucial for the interpretation of the experiment. At all steps of the study we devote special attention to revealing and emphasizing the dual itinerant-localized properties of the material. The obtained forms of the duality are different: well defined atomic moments formed by the itinerant electrons, interplay of the single-site and two-site anisotropies, strong localization of two of the 5f electrons in contrast to the itinerant nature of the 5f electrons contributing to the states around the Fermi level., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

A new U-based compound of the U2Rh2Pb, a new compound of the U2T2X series was prepared in a single-crystal form. Its structure was determined as belonging to the tetragonal Mo2FeB2 structure type with the shortest U-U spacing along the c. U2Rh2Pb undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition at TN of 20 K and exhibits an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient 150 mJ/molK2. In contrast to the two rhodium analogues U2Rh2In and U2Rh2Sn, the easy-magnetization direction is the c with rather low value of the critical field 4.3 T of the metamagnetic transition of a spin-flip type. The observed dependences of TN and Hc on temperature and magnetic field have been used for constructing a magnetic phase diagram. We address the long-standing mystery of the nonmagnetic insulating state of the intermediate valence compound SmB$_6$. Within a combination of the local density approximation (LDA) and an exact diagonalization (ED) of an effective discrete Anderson impurity model, the intermediate valence ground state with the $f$-shell occupation $\langle n_{4f} \rangle=5.6$ is found for the Sm atom in SmB$_6$. This ground state is a singlet, and the first excited triplet state $\sim 3$ meV higher in the energy. SmB$_6$ is a narrow band insulator already in LDA, with the direct band gap of $\sim 10$ meV. The electron correlations increase the band gap which now becomes indirect. Thus, the many-body effects are relevant to form the indirect band gap, crucial for the idea of ``topological Kondo insulator" in SmB$_6$. Also, an actinide analog PuB$_6$ is considered, and the intermediate valence singlet ground state is found for the Pu atom. We propose that [Sm,Pu]B$_6$ belong to a new class of the intermediate valence materials with the multi-orbital ``Kondo-like" singlet ground-state. Crucial role of complex spin-orbital $f^n$-$f^{n+1}$ multiplet structure differently hybridized with ligand states in such Racah materials is discussed.

Electrical resistivity \rho(T) of the 5f ferromagnet UGa2 was investigated for single-crystal samples as a function of pressure and magnetic field. The Curie temperature monotonously increases from T$_{C}$ = 124 K under quasi-hydrostatic pressure up to 154 K at p = 14.2 GPa, after which it turns down steeply and reaches T$_{C}$ = 147 K at p = 15.2 GPa. At 20 GPa the compound is already non-magnetic. This dramatic variation is compatible with exchange interactions mediated by the 5f hybridization with the non-f states. The external pressure first enhances the exchange coupling of the 5f moments, but eventually suppresses the order by washing out the 5f moments. Such a two-band model is adequate for the weakly delocalized 5f states. The spin-disorder resistivity, which produces very high \rho-values (300 \mu\Omega.cm) is gradually suppressed by the pressure. The correlated band theory implemented as a combination of the local density approximation with the exact diagonalization of the Anderson impurity model is applied to PuO$_2$. We obtain an insulating electronic structure consistent with the experimental photoemission spectra. The calculations yield the band gap of 1.8 eV and a non-magnetic singlet ground state that is characterized by a non-integer filling of the plutonium $f$ shell ($n_f\approx 4.5$). Due to sizeable hybridization of the $f$ shell with the $p$ states of oxygen, the ground state is more complex than the four-electron Russell--Saunders ${}^5{\rm I}_4$ manifold split by the crystal field. Ab-initio relativistic dynamical mean-field theory is applied to resolve the long-standing controversy between theory and experiment in the "simple" face-centered cubic phase of plutonium called delta-Pu. In agreement with experiment, neither static nor dynamical magnetic moments are predicted. In addition, the quasiparticle density of states reproduces not only the peak close to the Fermi level, which explains the large coefficient of electronic specific heat, but also main 5f features observed in photoelectron spectroscopy., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures
