1. A model of adaptive decision making from representation of information environment by quantum fields

Abstract

We present the mathematical model of decision making (DM) of agents acting in a complex and uncertain environment (combining huge variety of economical, financial, behavioral, and geo-political factors). To describe interaction of agents with it, we apply the formalism of quantum field theory (QTF). Quantum fields are of the purely informational nature. The QFT-model can be treated as a far relative of the expected utility theory, where the role of utility is played by adaptivity to an environment (bath). However, this sort of utility-adaptivity cannot be represented simply as a numerical function. The operator representation in Hilbert space is used and adaptivity is described as in quantum dynamics. We are especially interested in stabilization of solutions for sufficiently large time. The outputs of this stabilization process, probabilities for possible choices, are treated in the framework of classical DM. To connect classical and quantum DM, we appeal to Quantum Bayesianism (QBism). We demonstrate the quantum-like interference effect in DM which is exhibited as a violation of the formula of total probability and hence the classical Bayesian inference scheme., Comment: in press in Philosophical Transactions A

2. Towards a formalization of a two traders market with information exchange

Abstract

This paper shows that Hamiltonians and operators can also be put to good use even in contexts which are not purely physics based. Consider the world of finance. The work presented here {models a two traders system with information exchange with the help of four fundamental operators: cash and share operators; a portfolio operator and an operator reflecting the loss of information. An information Hamiltonian is considered and an additional Hamiltonian is presented which reflects the dynamics of selling/buying shares between traders. An important result of the paper is that when the information Hamiltonian is zero, portfolio operators commute with the Hamiltonian and this suggests that the dynamics are really due to the information. Under the assumption that the interaction and information terms in the Hamiltonian have similar strength, a perturbation scheme is considered on the interaction parameter. Contrary to intuition, the paper shows that up to a second order in the interaction parameter, a key factor in the computation of the portfolios of traders will be the initial values of the loss of information (rather than the initial conditions on the cash and shares). Finally, the paper shows that a natural outcome from the inequality of the variation of the portfolio of trader one versus the variation of the portfolio of trader two, begs for the introduction of `good' and `bad' information. It is shown that `good' information is related to the reservoirs (where an infinite set of bosonic operators are used) which model rumors/news and external facts, whilst `bad' information is associated with a set of two modes bosonic operators., Comment: In press in Physica Scripta

Abstract

In a very simple stock market, made by only two \emph{initially equivalent} traders, we discuss how the information can affect the performance of the traders. More in detail, we first consider how the portfolios of the traders evolve in time when the market is \emph{closed}. After that, we discuss two models in which an interaction with the outer world is allowed. Abstract

Exertional heat illness and stroke are serious concerns across youth and college sports programs. While some teams and governing bodies have adopted the wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT), few practitioners use measurements on the field of play; rather, they often rely on regionally modeled or estimated WBGT. However, urban development-induced heat and projected climate change increase exposure to heat. We examined WBGT levels between various athletic surfaces and regional weather stations under current and projected climates and in hot-humid and hot-dry weather regimes in the southwest U.S. in Tempe, Arizona. On-site sun-exposed WBGT data across five days (07:00–19:00 local time) in June (dry) and August (humid) were collected over five athletic surfaces: rubber, artificial turf, clay, grass, and asphalt. Weather station data were used to estimate regional WBGT (via the Liljegren model) and compared to on-site, observed WBGT. Finally, projected changes to WBGT were modeled under mid-century and late-century conditions. On-field WBGT observations were, on average, significantly higher than WBGT estimated from regional weather stations by 2.4 °C–2.5 °C, with mean on-field WBGT across both months of 28.5 ± 2.76 °C (versus 25.8 ± 3.21 °C regionally). However, between-athletic surface WBGT differences were largely insignificant. Significantly higher mean WBGTs occurred in August (30.1 ± 2.35 °C) versus June (26.9 ± 2.19 °C) across all venues; August conditions reached ‘limit activity’ or ‘cancellation’ thresholds for 6–8 h and 2–4 h of the day, respectively, for all sports venues. Climate projections show increased WBGTs across measurement locations, dependent on projection and period, with average August WBGT under the highest representative concentration pathway causing all-day activity cancellations. Practitioners are encouraged to use WBGT devices within the vicinity of the fields of play, yet should not rely on regional weather station estimations without corrections used. Heat concerns are expected to increase in the future, underlining the need for athlete monitoring, local cooling design strategies, and heat adaptation for safety.

Abstract

The creation and protection of financial wealth is one of the most important roles of modern societies. People will commit to working hard and saving for future generations only if they can be sure that the efforts they exert every day will be rewarded by a better standard of living. This, however, can only be achieved with a well-functioning financial market. Unfortunately, a breakdown of the financial system as in the great financial crisis of 2007 and 2008 destroys the trust in this important social arrangement. To avoid such crises we need to improve our understanding of financial markets that, so far, has been built on totally unrealistic assumptions about the behavior of people acting in them. The most fundamental and at the same time the most questionable in modern economic theory is the hypothesis of full rationality of economic agents who are assumed to maximize their utility functions subject to their individual constraints, or in mathematical language, solve well-defined and precisely stated constrained optimization problems.

Abstract

Prior to the crisis the dominant paradigm in macroeconomic modeling was the micro-founded "New-Keynesian" DSGE model (described in many textbooks including the influential exposition of Woodford (2003)). In its most basic form this combines price-stickiness with forward looking decision making by both households and firms. This provides a tractable framework for capturing the response of output and inflation to both demand and supply shocks and explaining intuitively the transmission of monetary policy (with monetary policy characterized as a choice over rules for current and future interest rates).

Abstract

Data produced by laboratory Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Bohm (EPRB) experiments is tested against the hypothesis that the statistics of this data is given by quantum theory of this thought experiment. Statistical evidence is presented that the experimental data, while violating Bell inequalities, does not support this hypothesis. It is shown that an event-based simulation model, providing a cause-and-effect description of real EPRB experiments at a level of detail which is not covered by quantum theory, reproduces the results of quantum theory of this thought experiment, indicating that there is no fundamental obstacle for a real EPRB experiment to produce data that can be described by quantum theory., Comment: FPP6 - Foundations of Probability and Physics 6, AIP Conference Proceedings, in press

Abstract

In 45 palladium samples produced by three different manufacturers in various lots and sizes, no evidence of tritium contamination is found. Within the maximum error of the experiments, i.e., {plus minus} 3 decay/min {center dot} ml{sup {minus}1}, the palladium samples give tritium counts identical with the background of 26 decay/min {center dot} ml. In this paper the major factors leading to possible errors in applying this technique are discussed. False high readings may be caused by chemiluminescence, photoluminescence, colored solution, and chemical reactions. But false high readings are not obtained when automatic quench control and other standard precautions are employed. On the other hand, false low readings can result from the escape of dissolved tritium gas. Closed system analytical procedures are, therefore, preferred.

Abstract

We introduce Claude Lévi Strauss' canonical formula (CF), an attempt to rigorously formalise the general narrative structure of myth. This formula utilises the Klein group as its basis, but a recent work draws attention to its natural quaternion form, which opens up the possibility that it may require a quantum inspired interpretation. We present the CF in a form that can be understood by a non-anthropological audience, using the formalisation of a key myth (that of Adonis) to draw attention to its mathematical structure. The future potential formalisation of mythological structure within a quantum inspired framework is proposed and discussed, with a probabilistic interpretation further generalising the formula

Abstract

Complex numbers are a fundamental aspect of the mathematical formalism of quantum physics. Quantum-like models developed outside physics often overlooked the role of complex numbers. Specifically, previous models in Information Retrieval (IR) ignored complex numbers. We argue that to advance the use of quantum models of IR, one has to lift the constraint of real-valued representations of the information space, and package more information within the representation by means of complex numbers. As a first attempt, we propose a complex-valued representation for IR, which explicitly uses complex valued Hilbert spaces, and thus where terms, documents and queries are represented as complex-valued vectors. The proposal consists of integrating distributional semantics evidence within the real component of a term vector; whereas, ontological information is encoded in the imaginary component. Our proposal has the merit of lifting the role of complex numbers from a computational byproduct of the model to the very mathematical texture that unifies different levels of semantic information. An empirical instantiation of our proposal is tested in the TREC Medical Record task of retrieving cohorts for clinical studies.

Abstract

This article examines manual textual categorisation by human coders with the hypothesis that the law of total probability may be violated for difficult categories. An empirical evaluation was conducted to compare a one step categorisation task with a two step categorisation task using crowdsourcing. It was found that the law of total probability was violated. Both a quantum and classical probabilistic interpretations for this violation are presented. Further studies are required to resolve whether quantum models are more appropriate for this task.

The technique of Szpak for obtaining x‐ray radiographs from working electrolytic cells has been followed, in order to confirm his results. Each experiment was run with two cells, one with light water and one with heavy water, to verify that the nuclear difference was crucial to any observed effects. His technique, if confirmed offers the possibility of obtaining the energy of emitted x‐rays.
