Abstract

This article introduces a topology optimization method for a surface permanent magnet (SPM) motor with high torque density suitable for air mobility. The proposed method can be used to determine the material distribution and magnetization direction in PMs to maximize the torque density at a constant current. The torque performance of the optimized motor is superior to that of a conventional motor with a Halbach array, whose magnetization varies linearly along the circumferential direction. The novel optimized motor has a triangular magnetic material on the rotor surface and an air region inside the rotor.

20. Pleuroperitoneal canal closure and the fetal adrenal gland

Abstract

Pleuroperitoneal canal (PP canal) closure is generally considered to result from an increase in the height, and subsequent fusion, of the bilateral pleuroperitoneal folds (PP folds). However, the folds develop in the area ventral to the adrenal, in contrast to the final position of the diaphragm, which extends to the dorsal side of the adrenal (the "retro-adrenal" diaphragm). We examined the semiserial histology of 20 human embryos and fetuses (crown-rump length 11-40 mm). We started observations of the canal at the stage through which the lung bud extends far caudally along the dorsal body wall to the level of the future adrenal, and the phrenic nerve has already reached the PP fold. Subsequently, the developing adrenal causes narrowing of the dorsocaudal parts of the canal, and provides the bilateral midsagittal recesses or "false" bottoms of the pleural cavity. However, at this stage, the PP fold mesenchymal cells are still restricted to the ventral side of the adrenal, especially along the liver and esophagus. Thereafter, in accordance with ascent of the lung, possibly due to anchoring of the liver to the adrenal, the PP fold mesenchymal cells seem to migrate laterally along the coelomic mesothelium covering some sheet-like loose mesenchymal tissue behind the adrenal. Final closure of the PP canal by lateral migration to provide the "retro-adrenal" diaphragm is a process quite different from the common dogma. Abstract

A rare case of an anomalous location of the orifice of the coronary artery was found in a 99-year-old male cadaver undergoing routine dissection. The presence of the right coronary artery (RCA), left coronary artery (LCA), and conus artery (conus branch) originating from the right Valsalva sinus are the characteristic findings of this case. Then, the LCA passed through the aorta and the pulmonary artery. The LCA and RCA branches were normal. These findings are useful for future surgical procedures, including cardiac catheterization. Abstract

A hybrid optimization method that combines parameter optimization (PO) with topology optimization (TO) is proposed for the design of a permanent magnet (PM) motor. The PM shape, configuration, and flux barrier topology were simultaneously optimized using the proposed method. The conventional hybrid method that deals with a single PM is effectively extended to deal with multiple PMs parameterized by several geometrical parameters. The use of this extension makes it possible to search for the optimal rotor structure of the multiple-PM motor, which is widely used in electric vehicles. The results obtained by the proposed method are shown superior over those obtained by conventional method. The rotor structure with double-U shaped PMs with small flux barriers near the airgap was obtained by the optimization.

Abstract

Mineral components in tap water generally contaminate sanitary ware. In this study, various cations (Mg, Ca, and Al) were added to an aqueous solution containing silica to prevent water stains on sanitary ware. The particle size in the aqueous solution was measured and observed to increase for all cations. To create artificial water stains, a solution containing the cations and silica was dropped onto glass and allowed to dry. When these water stains were removed by sliding, the removal rate was higher for the water stains that contained the cations. This trend was attributed to the formation of precipitates owing to the reaction of silica with the added cations in the aqueous solution. The formation of these precipitates possibly increased the particle size and brittleness of water stains owing to their sparse structure. These findings provide insights into silica‐scale removal, which can improve the cleanliness of sanitary ware and reduce the frequency of maintenance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

39. Sphenomandibular ligament and degenerating Meckel's cartilage revisited: Sequential variations with temporal bone deformity for ligament attachment in near‐term human fetuses.

Abstract

Background: The sphenomandibular ligament (SML) is considered to originate from Meckel's cartilage (MC). However, no study has examined how the os goniale contributes to SML development. Methods: Semiserial histological sections of heads from 18 near‐term fetuses at 27–40 weeks of gestation were examined. Observations: The os goniale and the anterior process of the malleus (AP) provided a long, bar‐like membranous bone complex that passed through the petrotympanic and tympanosquamosal fissures. Notably, the AP–goniale complex is sometimes elongated inferiorly to join the SML (n = 4 specimens). Along the complex in the bone fissures, a degenerating MC was often present (n = 12). With (n = 6) or without (n = 3) the MC remnant, the tympanic bone (TYB) protruded inferomedially near the tympanosquamosal fissure, and it sometimes continued to a cartilaginous SML (n = 3). The temporal bone squamosa or petrosa provided a similar bony process approaching the SML. The middle meningeal artery often ran between the sphenoid and petrosa. Conclusions: Most of the specimens (n = 15) exhibited a sequential change from a cartilaginous SML as a continuation of the MC remnant to the ligament after the disappearance of the cartilage. The degenerating MC appeared to cause transformation from the AP–goniale complex and/or TYB to "another ligament" that replaced the usual SML at the upper part. Near the MC remnant, a similar transformation was also suggested on the squamosa or petrosa. The sphenoid spine appeared to originate often from the sphenoid ala major but sometimes from the TYB. Abstract

In this study, we present a topology-parameter hybrid optimization of a permanent magnet motor with a step-skewed rotor. This optimization simultaneously performed topology optimization (TO) of the core shape and parameter optimization (PO) of the skew angle. Simultaneous optimization provides optimized motors that are superior to those obtained by parameter, topology, and sequential optimizations. Moreover, the optimized shape was shown to be robust with respect to variations in the skew angle.

43. Multi-objective optimization of permanent magnet motors using deep learning and CMA-ES

Abstract

This paper proposes a multi-objective optimization method for permanent magnet motors using a fast optimization algorithm, Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy (CMA-ES), and deep learning. Multi-objective optimization with topology optimization is effective in the design of permanent magnet motors. Although CMA-ES needs fewer population size than genetic algorithm for single objective problems, this is not evident for multi-objective problems. For this reason, the proposed method generates training data by solving the single-objective optimization multiple times using CMA-ES, and constructs a deep neural network (NN) based on the data to predict performance from motor images at high speed. The deep NN is then used for fast solution of multi-objective optimization problems. Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract

In human fetuses, the left hepatic artery (LHA) issues the marginal artery that runs along the umbilical vein and, sometimes, reaches the umbilicus. The further observation demonstrated that, in 5 of 12 Japanese midterm fetuses (crownrump length mm: 46, 50, 54, 59, 102), the marginal artery issued not only a thin umbilical branch but also a liver parenchymal branch that took a posterosuperior recurrent course in a peritoneal fold and supplied the anterior surface of the liver left lobe (segment III). However, in 22 Spanish fetuses of which gestational ages corresponded to the Japanese ones, we did not find the parenchymal branch. Therefore, between human populations, there seemed to be a considerable difference in the incidence as to whether or not the marginal artery issues the liver parenchymal branch. The parenchymal branch might be degenerated at the later stages due to friction between the liver free surface and growing diaphragm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
