The paper presents the translations, introduction and interpretation of information about Alans, obtained from the Armenian written sources of the 12th – 18th centuries. The subject of research is information from the following sources: Armenian historical works published in Russian or the original language, as well as historical or grammatical works, aide-memoirs and colophons of manuscripts that have not yet been in the focus of researchers’ attention or are introduced into the scientific use for the first time. Most of the sources published here have been identified in the collection of the M. Mashtots Research Institute of Ancient Manuscripts (Matenadaran). The information of the Armenian written sources dates the 12th – 18th centuries. This allows us to clarify the ethno-confessional map of the Caucasus in the 12th – 14th centuries and its transformation in the later period. Some of them, in particular, suggest the idea about the identity of ethnonyms “Alans” and “Osi/Oseti”. The sources also provide information about the written languages of the peoples of the Caucasus that were used in worship service. The paper pays great attention to the study of the issues of the “Alans”, “Alan Region” and “Alan Gates” mentioned in Armenian sources of the 16th – 18th centuries. The study uses the analysis of the available information on this oeconym, since in late Armenian sources the Alan Gates are localized in Derbent, and the terms “Alans” and the “Alan Region” are used in relation to the population and territory of the former Caucasian Albania.

Some of the most energetic pulsars exhibit rotation-modulated gamma-ray emission in the $0.1$ to $100$ GeV band. The luminosity of this emission is typically $0.1\text{-}10\%$ of the pulsar spin-down power (gamma-ray efficiency), implying that a significant fraction of the available electromagnetic energy is dissipated in the magnetosphere and reradiated as high-energy photons. To investigate this phenomenon we model a pulsar magnetosphere using 3D particle-in-cell simulations with strong synchrotron cooling. We particularly focus on the dynamics of the equatorial current sheet where magnetic reconnection and energy dissipation take place. Our simulations demonstrate that a fraction of the spin-down power dissipated in the magnetospheric current sheet is controlled by the rate of magnetic reconnection at microphysical plasma scales and only depends on the pulsar inclination angle. We demonstrate that the maximum energy and the distribution function of accelerated pairs is controlled by the available magnetic energy per particle near the current sheet, the magnetization parameter. The shape and the extent of the plasma distribution is imprinted in the observed synchrotron emission, in particular, in the peak and the cutoff of the observed spectrum. We study how the strength of synchrotron cooling affects the observed variety of spectral shapes. Our conclusions naturally explain why pulsars with higher spin-down power have wider spectral shapes and, as a result, lower gamma-ray efficiency., 22 pages, 12 figures

Chronic pain is typically defined as pain that persists after acute tissue damage and inflammation or as pain that follows a chronic disease process and lasts more than three months. Because of its debilitating impact on the quality of life of patients, recent research aims to investigate the mechanisms behind nociception to discover novel therapeutic agents to alleviate pain. One such target is the neuropeptide calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), which has shown to play an integral role in migraine pathophysiology. Effective treatments of migraines with CGRP antagonists have stimulated our efforts toward checking a possible involvement of CGRP in nonheadache pain conditions such as hypertension, congestive heart failure, Alzheimer's disease, and vascular ischemia. Here, we provide a brief overview of chronic pain, with a particular emphasis on the role of CGRP as a fundamental mediator of nociceptive pain as well as a target for novel therapeutic agents.

One scenario for the generation of fast radio bursts (FRBs) is magnetic reconnection in a current sheet of the magnetar wind. Compressed by a strong magnetic pulse induced by a magnetar flare, the current sheet fragments into a self-similar chain of magnetic islands. Time-dependent plasma currents at their interfaces produce coherent radiation during their hierarchical coalescence. We investigate this scenario using 2D radiative relativistic particle-in-cell simulations to compute the efficiency of the coherent emission and to obtain frequency scalings. Consistent with expectations, a fraction of the reconnected magnetic field energy, $f\sim 0.002$, is converted to packets of high-frequency fast magnetosonic waves which can escape from the magnetar wind as radio emission. In agreement with analytical estimates, we find that magnetic pulses of $10^{47}\text{erg}\;\text{s}^{-1}$ can trigger relatively narrowband GHz emission with luminosities of approximately $10^{42}\text{erg}\;\text{s}^{-1}$, sufficient to explain bright extragalactic FRBs. The mechanism provides a natural explanation for a downward frequency drift of burst signals, as well as the $\sim 100\;\text{ns}$ substructure recently detected in FRB 20200120E., 19 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication by ApJL

Creating a true and objective picture of the historical development of any country is impossible without identifying and studying the characteristics and uniqueness of its various regions. Thus, the study of “Local history” (regional history) is one of the ways to deepen the understanding of historical processes and to identify regional differentiation within the framework of a single historical process in Dagestan, the Caucasus and in the broader framework. For example, as Russian orientalist V. Bobrovnikov writes, “the historical ethnography of Dagestan’s villages has made a significant contribution to the development of community theory in the Caucasus and in the world” [1, p. 5]. This is one of the most important directions of development of historical science in Dagestan, which received a new impetus in the early XXI century. One of the most fundamental researches in this sphere is the recently published monograph “Karakh in XII - beginning of XX century (historical and ethnographic essays)”, on the example of which we consider this direction of historical research in Dagestan.

Planet Formation research is blooming in an era where we are moving from speaking about “protoplanetary disks” to “planet forming disks” (1). However, this transition is still motivated by indirect (but convincing) hints. Up to date, the direct detection of planets “in the making” remains elusive with the remarkable exception of PDS 70 b and c (2; 3; 4). The scarcity of detections is attributable to technical challenges, and even for the rare jewels that we can detect, characterization is unachievable. The next step in this direction demands from near to mid-infrared interferometry to jump from ∼100 m baselines to ∼1 km, and from very few telescopes to 20 or more (PFI like concepts, (5)). This transition needs for more affordable near to mid-infrared telescopes to be designed. Since the driving cost for such telescopes resides on the primary mirror, in particular scaling with its diameter and weight, our approach to tackle this problem relies on the production of low-cost light mirrors

In the manufacturing process of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) mirrors (replicated from a mandrel) the orientation of the unidirectional carbon fiber layers (layup) has a direct influence on different aspects of the final product, like its general (large scale) shape and local deformations. In particular, optical methods used to evaluate the surface's quality, can reveal the presence of print-through, a very common issue in CFPR manufacture. In practical terms, the surface's irregularities induced, among other artifacts, by print-through, produce unwanted scattering effects, which are usually mitigated applying extra layers of different materials to the surface. Since one of the main goals of CFPR mirrors is to decrease the final weight of the whole mirror system, adding more material goes in the opposite direction of that. For this reason a different layup method is being developed with the goal of decreasing print-through and improving sphericity while maintaining mechanical qualities and without the addition of extra material in the process., 11 pages, 8 figure, submitted to SPIE

The surface quality of replicated CFRP mirrors is ideally expected to be as good as the mandrel from which they are manufactured. In practice, a number of factors produce surface imperfections in the final mirrors at different scales. To understand where this errors come from, and develop improvements to the manufacturing process accordingly, a wide range of metrology techniques and quality control methods must be adopted. Mechanical and optical instruments are employed to characterise glass mandrels and CFRP replicas at different spatial frequency ranges. Modal analysis is used to identify large scale aberrations, complemented with a spectral analysis at medium and small scales. It is seen that astigmatism is the dominant aberration in the CFRP replicas. On the medium and small scales, we have observed that fiber print-through and surface roughness can be improved significantly by an extra resin layer over the replica's surface, but still some residual irregularities are present., 8 pages, 7 figures. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common inflammatory disease with several implications on health, disability and economy. Conventional treatment for RA centers on anti-inflammatory drugs and specific targeting of tumor necrosis factor  (TNF-) and interleukin 6 (IL-6). Baricitinib is a novel, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved, once daily oral drug that is effective in combination with current treatment and results in significantly reduced symptoms with good safety profile. Further studies are required to find rare side effects and evaluate the long term efficacy in disease modulation and patient symptom reduction. This is a comprehensive review of the literature on baricitinib for the treatment of RA. This review provides an update on the pathophysiology, diagnosis and conventional treatment of RA, then proceeds to introduce baricitinib and the data that exists to support or refute its use in RA. The presented study also indicated clinical trials confirming the effectiveness of baricitinib in this indication.

Plasmoids -- magnetized quasi-circular structures formed self-consistently in reconnecting current sheets -- were previously considered to be the graveyards of energetic particles. In this paper, we demonstrate the important role of plasmoids in shaping the particle energy spectrum in relativistic reconnection (i.e., with upstream magnetization $\sigma_{\rm up} \gg 1$). Using two dimensional particle-in-cell simulations in pair plasmas with $\sigma_{\rm up}=10$ and $100$, we study a secondary particle energization process that takes place inside compressing plasmoids. We demonstrate that plasmoids grow in time, while their interiors compress, amplifying the internal magnetic field. The magnetic field felt by particles injected in an isolated plasmoid increases linearly with time, which leads to particle energization as a result of magnetic moment conservation. For particles injected with a power-law distribution function, this energization process acts in such a way that the shape of the injected power law is conserved, while producing an additional non-thermal tail $f(E)\propto E^{-3}$ at higher energies followed by an exponential cutoff. The cutoff energy, which increases with time as $E_{\rm cut}\propto\sqrt{t}$, can greatly exceed $\sigma_{\rm up} m_e c^2$. We analytically predict the secondary acceleration timescale and the shape of the emerging particle energy spectrum, which can be of major importance in certain astrophysical systems, such as blazar jets., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures

In the era of high-angular resolution astronomical instrumentation, where long and very long baseline interferometers (constituted by many, $\sim$ 20 or more, telescopes) are expected to work not only in the millimeter and submillimeter domain, but also at near and mid infrared wavelengths (experiments such as the Planet Formation Imager, PFI, see Monnier et al. 2018 for an update on its design); any promising strategy to alleviate the costs of the individual telescopes involved needs to be explored. In a recent collaboration between engineers, experimental physicists and astronomers in Valparaiso, Chile, we are gaining expertise in the production of light carbon fiber polymer reinforced mirrors. The working principle consists in replicating a glass, or other substrate, mandrel surface with the mirrored adequate curvature, surface characteristics and general shape. Once the carbon fiber base has hardened, previous studies have shown that it can be coated (aluminum) using standard coating processes/techniques designed for glass-based mirrors. The resulting surface quality is highly dependent on the temperature and humidity control among other variables. Current efforts are focused on improving the smoothness of the resulting surfaces to meet near/mid infrared specifications, overcoming, among others, possible deteriorations derived from the replication process. In a second step, at the validation and quality control stage, the mirrors are characterized using simple/traditional tools like spherometers (down to micron precision), but also an optical bench with a Shack-Hartman wavefront sensor. This research line is developed in parallel with a more classical glass-based approach, and in both cases we are prototyping at the small scale of few tens of cms. High energy radiation from nonthermal particles accelerated in relativistic magnetic reconnection is thought to be important in many astrophysical systems, ranging from blazar jets and black hole accretion disk coronae to pulsars and magnetar flares. The presence of a substantial density of high energy photons ($>$MeV) in these systems can make two-photon pair production ($\gamma\gamma\to e^-e^+$) an additional source of plasma particles and can affect the radiative properties of these objects. We present the results of novel particle-in-cell simulations that track both the radiated synchrotron photons and the created pairs, with which we study the evolution of a two-dimensional reconnecting current sheet in pair plasma. Synchrotron radiation from accelerated particles in the current sheet produces hot secondary pairs in the upstream which are later advected into the current sheet where they are reaccelerated and produce more photons. In the optically thin regime, when most of the radiation is leaving the upstream unaffected, this process is self-regulating and depends only on the background magnetic field and the optical depth of photons to pair production. The extra plasma loading also affects the properties of reconnection. We study how the inflow of the secondary plasma, with multiplicities up to several hundred, reduces the effective magnetization of the plasma, suppressing the acceleration and thus decreasing the high energy photon spectrum cutoff. This offers an explanation for the weak dependence of the observed gamma-ray cutoff in pulsars on the magnetic field at the light cylinder., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures, submitted to ApJ

The novel Hamamatsu Multi Pixel Photon Counter Array S12045(X) is an array of 16 individual MPPCs (3×3 [mm2]) (further in the article MPPC array channel) each with 3600 G-APD (Geiger-mode Avalanche Photodiode) pixels (50×50 [μ m2]). Each MPPC in the array works with its individual reverse bias voltage around 70[V]. We studied the main features of each MPPC array channel for 2800 MPPC arrays at different temperatures. Two measurement systems were built to extract Gain, Breakdown Voltage, Photon Detection Efficiency (PDE), Optical Cross-talk and Dark rate for each MPPC array channel. The article describes the characterization process of MPPC arrays used in GlueX experiment (Jefferson Lab, Hall D). The hardware and the performed data analysis are described, which include new analytical expressions to obtain the number of photoelectrons and Optical Cross-Talk. The dynamical behavior of characterization parameters is presented as well.

While the deflection of light is achromatic in General Relativity, it is not always so in several new-physics models (e.g. certain quantum-gravity and string-inspired models, models with nonminimal photon-gravity coupling or with massive photon etc.). We discuss how parameters of these models may be constrained by precise astrometry at different wavelenghts. From published observations of the gravitational lens MG J2016+112, we obtain world-best limits on chromatic gravitational deflection of light (and the unique limit on the photon mass relevant for distance scales >Mpc). Atomic nuclei can be used as spatial analyzers of the hadronization process in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. The study of this process using fully-identified final state hadrons began with the HERMES program in the late 1990s, and is now continuing at Jefferson Lab. In the measurement described here, electrons and positive pions were measured from a 5 GeV electron beam incident on targets of liquid deuterium, C, Fe, and Pb using CLAS in Hall B. The broadening of the transverse momentum of positive pions has been studied in detail as a function of multiple kinematic variables, and interpreted in terms of the transport of the struck quark through the nuclear systems. New insights are being obtained into the hadronization process from these studies; and experiments of this type can be relevant for the interpretation of jet quenching and proton-nucleus collisions at RHIC and LHC. This work is based on the improvement of an existing simulation for the two photon exchange (TPE) experiment at Jefferson Lab developed within the GEANT4 framework. This experiment will determine the ratio of the positron‐proton elastic scattering cross section and the electron‐proton elastic scattering cross section with high precision. To accomplish this measurement requires the use of a variety of devices and complex arrangements, creating background particles that manage to reach the detector system (CLAS). A number of test runs have identified the sources of background in the detector guided by previous simulations. Even so, the remaining background can be reduced considerably by the microscopic identification and locating of the background sources performed by our new simulation.

The preliminary results are presented for Jefferson Lab experiment E02‐104 which was performed in the CLAS detector at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. During the experiment, data on semi‐inclusive production of hadrons in deep‐inelastic scattering of a lepton off nuclei were acquired. These data provide important information about the space‐time development of in‐medium hadronizaton as well as give an opportunity to investigate the fragmentation processes in the nuclear medium. Transverse momentum broadening and hadronic multiplicity ratios for positively charged pions were measured as multidimensional functions of kinematic variables from different nuclear targets.

Over the past decade, new data from HERMES, Jefferson Lab, Fermilab, and RHIC that connect to parton propagation and hadron formation have become available. Semi-inclusive DIS on nuclei, the Drell-Yan reaction, and heavy-ion collisions all bring different kinds of information on parton propagation within a medium, while the most direct information on hadron formation comes from the DIS data. Over the next decade one can hope to begin to understand these data within a unified picture. The propagation of colored quarks through strongly interacting systems, and their subsequent evolution into color-singlet hadrons, are phenomena that showcase unique facets of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Medium-stimulated gluon bremsstrahlung, a fundamental QCD process, induces broadening of the transverse momentum of the parton, and creates partonic energy loss manifesting itself in experimental observables that are accessible in high energy interactions in hot and cold systems. The formation of hadrons, which is the dynamical enforcement of the QCD confinement principle, is very poorly understood on the basis of fundamental theory, although detailed models such as the Lund string model or cluster hadronization models can generally be tuned to capture the main features of hadronic final states. With the advent of the technical capability to study hadronic final states from lepton scattering with good particle identification and at high luminosity, a new opportunity has appeared. Study of the characteristics of parton propagation and hadron formation as they unfold within atomic nuclei are now being used to understand the coherence and spatial features of these processes and to refine new experimental tools that will be used in future experiments. Fixed-target data on nuclei with lepton and hadron beams, and collider experiments involving nuclei, all make essential contact with these topics and they elucidate different aspects of these same themes. In this paper, a survey of the most relevant recent data and its potential interpretation will be followed by descriptions of planned experiments at Jefferson Lab following the completion of the 12 GeV upgrade, and feasible measurements at a future Electron-Ion Collider., Proceedings contribution to the "The 10th Latin American Symposium on Nuclear Physics and Applications" in Montevideo, Uruguay, November 29-30, 2013; slightly updated and with a more complete list of references
