1. Fast electro-optic switching for coherent laser ranging and velocimetry

Abstract

The growth of 3D imaging across a range of sectors has driven a demand for high performance beam steering techniques. Fields as diverse as autonomous vehicles and medical imaging can benefit from a high speed, adaptable method of beam steering. We present a monolithic, sub-microsecond electro-optic switch as a solution satisfying the need for reliability, speed, dynamic addressability and compactness. Here we demonstrate a laboratory-scale, solid-state lidar pointing system, using the electro-optic switch to launch modulated coherent light into free space, and then to collect the reflected signal. We use coherent detection of the reflected light to simultaneously extract the range and axial velocity of targets at each of several electronically addressable output ports.

Abstract

A scheme for active temporal-to-spatial demultiplexing of single-photons generated by a solid-state source is introduced. The scheme scales quasi-polynomially with photon number, providing a viable technological path for routing n photons in the one temporal stream from a single emitter to n different spatial modes. The active demultiplexing is demonstrated using a state-of-the-art photon source---a quantum-dot deterministically coupled to a micropillar cavity---and a custom-built demultiplexer---a network of electro-optically reconfigurable waveguides monolithically integrated in a lithium niobate chip. The measured demultiplexer performance can enable a six-photon rate three orders of magnitude higher than the equivalent heralded SPDC source, providing a platform for intermediate quantum computation protocols., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

© 2020 American Physical Society. We investigate a coherent feedback squeezer that uses quantum coherent feedback (measurement-free) control. Our squeezer is simple, easy to implement, robust to the gain fluctuation, and broadband compared to the existing squeezers because of the negative coherent feedback configuration. We conduct a feasibility study that looks at the stability conditions for a feedback system to optimize the designs of real optical devices. The feasibility study gives fabrication tolerance necessary for designing and realizing the actual device. Our formalism for the stability analysis is not limited to optical systems but can be applied to the other bosonic systems.

Abstract

Integrated photonics is a leading platform for quantum technologies including nonclassical state generation 1, 2, 3, 4, demonstration of quantum computational complexity 5 and secure quantum communications 6. As photonic circuits grow in complexity, full quantum tomography becomes impractical, and therefore an efficient method for their characterization 7, 8 is essential. Here we propose and demonstrate a fast, reliable method for reconstructing the two-photon state produced by an arbitrary quadratically nonlinear optical circuit. By establishing a rigorous correspondence between the generated quantum state and classical sum-frequency generation measurements from laser light, we overcome the limitations of previous approaches for lossy multi-mode devices 9, 10. We applied this protocol to a multi-channel nonlinear waveguide network and measured a 99.28±0.31% fidelity between classical and quantum characterization. This technique enables fast and precise evaluation of nonlinear quantum photonic networks, a crucial step towards complex, large-scale, device production.

We propose and demonstrate a new method for the characterization of nonlinear multimode integrated devices that reconstruct the biphoton state produced trough spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) using classical sum-frequency generation measurements. The proposed method is experimentally demonstrated by predicting the state generated from a multi-channel integrated nonlinear waveguide device.

Abstract

Experimental Thinking/Design Practices at Griffith University Art Gallery, Brisbane, explores several themes integral to how artists and designers develop research. The exhibition draws together a number of approaches to the challenges of global warming, big data, and embodied experience in the digital context. These challenges are taken up in the processes of participatory and co-design, speculative design, and exploratory experimental research in art and design. The impetus for the exhibitions is the increasingly heated debates about the narrow strictures of categorisation in art and design and the emergent strategies of cultural probes, design games, provotypes, and the frontrunners of critical and speculative design. It is the third in a series of exhibitions, the others of which included Feral Experimental: New Design Thinking at the University of New South Wales Galleries, Sydney, from July to August 2014, and Experimental Practice: Provocations In and Out of Design at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University Design Hub, Melbourne, in May 2015. The exhibitions aim to provoke debate about the purpose of design in a format that is modified for each location. These iterations of the exhibition include practitioners from the communities in which they were shown, and were developed by Katherine Moline in Sydney, Katherine Moline, Laurene Vaughan and Brad Haylock in Melbourne, and Katherine Moline, Peter Hall and Beck Davis in Brisbane.

22. Genetic and metabolic predictors of chemosensitivity in oligodendroglial neoplasms

Abstract

The −1p/−19q genotype predicts chemosensitivity in oligodendroglial neoplasms, but some with intact 1p/19q also respond and not all with 1p/19q loss derive durable benefit from chemotherapy. We have evaluated the predictive and prognostic significance of pretherapy 201Tl and 18F-FDG SPECT and genotype in 38 primary and 10 recurrent oligodendroglial neoplasms following PCV chemotherapy. 1p/19q loss was seen in 8/15 OII, 6/15 OAII, 7/7 OIII, 3/11 OAIII and was associated with response (Fisher-Exact: P=0.000) and prolonged progression-free (log-rank: P=0.002) and overall survival (OS) (log-rank: P=0.0048). Response was unrelated to metabolism, with tumours with high or low metabolism showing response. Increased 18F-FDG or 201Tl uptake predicted shorter progression-free survival (PFS) in the series (log-rank: 201Tl P=0.0097, 18F-FDG P=0.0170) and in cases with or without the −1p/−19q genotype. Elevated metabolism was associated with shorter OS in cases with intact 1p/19q (log-rank: 18F-FDG P=0.0077; 201Tl P=0.0004) and shorter PFS in responders (log-rank: 18F-FDG P=0.005; 201Tl P=0.0132). 201Tl uptake and 1p/19q loss were independent predictors of survival in multivariate analysis. In this initial study, 201Tl and 18F-FDG uptake did not predict response to PCV, but may be associated with poor survival following therapy irrespective of genotype. This may be clinically useful warranting further study.

45. Programmable high-dimensional Hamiltonian in a photonic waveguide array.

Abstract

Waveguide lattices offer a compact and stable platform for a range of applications, including quantum walks, condensed matter system simulation, and classical and quantum information processing. However, to date, waveguide lattice devices have been static and designed for specific applications. We present a programmable waveguide array in which the Hamiltonian terms can be individually electro-optically tuned to implement various Hamiltonian continuous-time evolutions on a single device. We used a single array with 11 waveguides in lithium niobate, controlled via 22 electrodes, to perform a range of experiments that realized the Su-Schriffer-Heeger model, the Aubrey-Andre model, and Anderson localization, which is equivalent to over 2500 static devices. Our architecture's micron-scale local electric fields overcome the cross-talk limitations of thermo-optic phase shifters in other platforms such as silicon, silicon-nitride, and silica. Electro-optic control allows for ultra-fast and more precise reconfigurability with lower power consumption, and with quantum input states, our platform can enable the study of multiple condensed matter quantum dynamics with a single device., (© 2024. 46. Single Photon Frequency Conversion for Frequency Multiplexed Quantum Networks in the Telecom Band.

Abstract

High-speed long-range quantum communication requires combining frequency multiplexed photonic channels with quantum memories. We experimentally demonstrate an integrated quantum frequency conversion protocol that can convert between wavelength division multiplexing channels in the telecom range with an efficiency of 55±8% and a noise subtracted Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) dip visibility of 84.5%. This protocol is based on a cascaded second order nonlinear interaction and can be used to interface a broad spectrum of frequencies with narrowband quantum memories, or alternatively as a quantum optical transponder, efficiently interfacing different regions of a frequency-multiplexed spectrum.

47. Integrated photonic platform for quantum information with continuous variables.

Abstract

Integrated quantum photonics provides a scalable platform for the generation, manipulation, and detection of optical quantum states by confining light inside miniaturized waveguide circuits. Here, we show the generation, manipulation, and interferometric stage of homodyne detection of nonclassical light on a single device, a key step toward a fully integrated approach to quantum information with continuous variables. We use a dynamically reconfigurable lithium niobate waveguide network to generate and characterize squeezed vacuum and two-mode entangled states, key resources for several quantum communication and computing protocols. We measure a squeezing level of - 1.38 ± 0.04 dB and demonstrate entanglement by verifying an inseparability criterion I = 0.77 ± 0.02 < 1. Our platform can implement all the processes required for optical quantum technology, and its high nonlinearity and fast reconfigurability make it ideal for the realization of quantum computation with time encoded continuous-variable cluster states.

49. Single-Crystalline 3C-SiC anodically Bonded onto Glass: An Excellent Platform for High-Temperature Electronics and Bioapplications.

Abstract

Single-crystal cubic silicon carbide has attracted great attention for MEMS and electronic devices. However, current leakage at the SiC/Si junction at high temperatures and visible-light absorption of the Si substrate are main obstacles hindering the use of the platform in a broad range of applications. To solve these bottlenecks, we present a new platform of single crystal SiC on an electrically insulating and transparent substrate using an anodic bonding process. The SiC thin film was prepared on a 150 mm Si with a surface roughness of 7 nm using LPCVD. The SiC/Si wafer was bonded to a glass substrate and then the Si layer was completely removed through wafer polishing and wet etching. The bonded SiC/glass samples show a sharp bonding interface of less than 15 nm characterized using deep profile X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, a strong bonding strength of approximately 20 MPa measured from the pulling test, and relatively high optical transparency in the visible range. The transferred SiC film also exhibited good conductivity and a relatively high temperature coefficient of resistance varying from -12 000 to -20 000 ppm/K, which is desirable for thermal sensors. The biocompatibility of SiC/glass was also confirmed through mouse 3T3 fibroblasts cell-culturing experiments. Taking advantage of the superior electrical properties and biocompatibility of SiC, the developed SiC-on-glass platform offers unprecedented potentials for high-temperature electronics as well as bioapplications.

Abstract

Background: Increasingly, biomarkers have been identified that correlate with improved overall and progression-free survival (OS and PFS) in glioblastoma, including MGMT methylation status and mutations in the IDH1 gene. In this study, we investigated the clinical and biological factors associated with long-term survival in glioblastoma patients treated with chemoradiotherapy., Method: Demographic and clinical data were collected for all patients with glioblastoma diagnosed between May 2004 and September 2007, treated with chemoradiotherapy and with associated tissue samples available for biomarker analysis. MGMT methylation was determined by pyrosequencing. IDH1 mutation was identified by R132H immunohistochemistry. Univariate Cox regression analysis of factors associated with survival and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was performed using the SPSS statistics package., Results: One hundred patients were included in the study. Median follow-up was 12.2 months (range 1.6-102.4). Median OS was 12.1 months (95 % CI: 10.8-13.3) and median PFS was 8.2 months (95 % CI: 6.8-9.5). The 2-, 3- and 5-year survival was 18, 9 and 6 % respectively. Three patients are still alive at 7.4, 8.3 and 8.5 years after diagnosis. Cox proportional-hazards regression identified independent prognostic factors for OS, female (p = 0.019), MGMT methylation (p < 0.0001) and IDH1 mutation (p = 0.023), and for PFS, MGMT methylation (p = 0.001) and IDH1 mutation (p = 0.018). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that MGMT(methylated)/IDH1(+ve) was associated with a significantly longer OS 66.8 months (95 % CI: 0.0-167.8) and PFS 16.9 months (95 % CI: 11.1-22.7) when compared with MGMT(methylated)/IDH1(-ve) OS 15.5 months (95 % CI: 11.6-19.4) and PFS 9.4 months (95 % CI: 8-10.8) (log-rank, P = 0.000) and MGMT(unmethylated)/IDH1(-ve) OS 11.1 months (95 % CI: 8.5-13.7) and PFS 6.3 months (95 % CI: 4.4-8.3) (log-rank, p = 0.000)., Conclusions: While the importance of MGMT methylation is well established, we demonstrate that the combination of MGMT(methylated)/IDH1(+ve) is associated with considerably longer OS and PFS in this series of chemoradiotherapy-treated glioblastoma tumours. The long-term cognitive function and quality of life in these long-term survivors warrant investigation.
