2. The Fault in Our Systems: LMS as a Vehicle for Critical Pedagogy

Abstract

Postsecondary instructors and students alike perceive the primary function of a learning management system (LMS) as a means of static information dissemination, particularly assessment-related information such as grades. Subsequently, the most-used LMS features are those that facilitate such information transfer. Perhaps because of these usage patterns and perceptions, a growing number of scholars and practitioners are calling for alternatives to the LMS. This article argues, however, that the LMS is not limited to (nor designed around) its current use as a grade delivery service, but can, rather, be leveraged as a vehicle for critical pedagogy and praxis through technology. Specifically, we seek to explore some of the current uses and perceptions of the LMS in higher education, as well as considerations and implications for faculty and educational technologists working with these systems in higher educational contexts.

Abstract

Temporal discounting is subject to framing effects. In this thesis, a novel individual differences approach was used to investigate potential drivers of the outcome frame effect. In Experiment 1 (N=32), 4 new variants of the Kirby task were employed to demonstrate that substantial individual differences exist in susceptibility to the effect of both outcome frame and response mode on delay discounting. These individual differences were found to be relatively stable over a period of 9 months in Experiment 2 (N=14); the new variants were found to exhibit test-retest reliability comparable to the BIS-11 and BIS/BAS scales. In Experiment 3a (N=79), a novel eye-tracking task was developed to investigate whether patterns of attention allocation to monetary amounts and delays were related to the outcome frame effect. It was found that: steep discounters paid relatively more attention to monetary amounts than their associated delays; greater susceptibility to effect of outcome frame was associated with a greater discrepancy between frames in the attention to delayed monetary amounts. In Experiment 3b (N=79), potential behavioural/cognitive correlates of the outcome frame effect were investigated. Contrary to Loewenstein’s (1998) account of the outcome frame effect, measures of loss aversion were not associated with susceptibility to the effect of outcome frame. However, cognitive ability and cognitive style accounted for independent variance in the outcome frame effect. These findings are interpreted in the context of Stanovich and West’s (1998, 2000) argument that departures from normative responding may be related to individual differences at the algorithmic- and intentional-levels of cognitive analysis.

7. HIV Rapid Testing in Substance Abuse Treatment: Implementation Following a Clinical Trial

Abstract

The Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration has promoted HIV testing and counseling as an evidence-based practice. Nevertheless, adoption of HIV testing in substance abuse treatment programs has been slow. This article describes the experience of a substance abuse treatment agency where, following participation in a clinical trial, the agency implemented an HIV testing and counseling program. During the trial, a post-trial pilot, and early implementation the agency identified challenges and developed strategies to overcome barriers to adoption of the intervention. Their experience may be instructive for other treatment providers seeking to implement an HIV testing program. Lessons learned encompassed the observed acceptability of testing and counseling to clients, the importance of a "champion" and staff buy-in, the necessity of multiple levels of community and agency support and collaboration, the ability to streamline staff training, the need for a clear chain of command, the need to develop program specific strategies, and the requirement for sufficient funding. An examination of costs indicated that some staff time may not be adequately reimbursed by funding sources for activities such as adapting the intervention, start-up training, ongoing supervision and quality assurance, and overhead costs. Abstract

Tactile perception plays a pivotal role in the early stages of human development; however, little is known about tactile function in young children. A better understanding of how tactile function improves with age from early childhood to adulthood is fundamental in understanding atypical tactile experiences in childhood-onset neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder. In this study, one hundred and forty-two children and adults aged 3–23 years completed a vibrotactile testing battery consisting of five tasks, which rely on different cortical mechanisms. The battery was designed to be suitable for testing in young children and was used to investigate tactile perception from early childhood to adulthood. Our results show a general pattern of rapid, age-related improvements in tactile perception (lower discrimination threshold = greater sensitivity) across early childhood (ages 3–6 years). However, differences in the rate of change across tasks were observed, with tactile performance reaching adult-like levels earlier on same tasks than others. These findings highlight that early childhood is a period of rapid changes in tactile perception, and that the different underlying cortical, physical and cognitive development processes likely develop at different rates. Further, we are the first to show the feasibility of vibrotactile testing in an early childhood sample, which has important clinical implications for examining developmental disorders with altered tactile function and our results can be used as a reference.

Abstract

International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 378 was designed to recover the first comprehensive set of Paleogene sedimentary sections from a transect of sites strategically positioned in the South Pacific Ocean to reconstruct key changes in oceanic and atmospheric circulation. These sites would have provided an unparalleled opportunity to add crucial new data and geographic coverage to existing reconstructions of Paleogene climate. Following the ~15 month postponement of Expedition 378 and subsequent port changes that resulted in a reduction of the number of primary sites, testing and evaluation of the research vessel JOIDES Resolution derrick in the weeks preceding the expedition determined that it would not support deployment of drill strings in excess of 2 km. Consequently, only one of the originally approved seven primary sites was drilled. Expedition 378 recovered the first continuously cored, multiple-hole Paleogene sedimentary section from the southern Campbell Plateau at Site U1553. This high-southern latitude site builds on the legacy of Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 277 (a single, partially spot cored hole), providing a unique opportunity to refine and expand existing reconstructions of Cenozoic climate history. As the world's largest ocean, the Pacific Ocean is intricately linked to major changes in the global climate system. Previous drilling in the low-latitude Pacific Ocean during Ocean Drilling Program Legs 138 and 199 and Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expeditions 320 and 321 provided new insights into climate and carbon system dynamics, productivity changes across the zone of divergence, time-dependent calcium carbonate dissolution, bio- and magnetostratigraphy, the location of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, and evolutionary patterns for times of climatic change and upheaval. Expedition 378 in the South Pacific Ocean uniquely complements this work with a highlatitude perspective, especially because appropriate high-latitude records are unobtainable in the Northern Hemisphere of the Pacific Ocean. Expedition 378 provides material from the South Pacific Ocean in an area critical for high-latitude climate reconstructions spanning the early Paleocene to late Oligocene. Site U1553 and the entire corpus of shore-based investigations will significantly contribute to the challenges of the "Climate and Ocean Change: Reading the Past, Informing the Future" theme of the 2013-2023 IODP Science Plan (How does Earth's climate system respond to elevated levels of atmospheric CO2? How resilient is the ocean to chemical perturbations?). Furthermore, Expedition 378 provides material from the South Pacific Ocean in an area critical for high-latitude climate reconstructions spanning the Paleocene to late Oligocene. Abstract

Eocene Thermal Maximum 2 (ETM-2; 54.1 Ma) was the second largest Eocene hyperthermal. Like the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), ETM-2 was characterized by massive carbon emissions and several degrees of global warming and thus can serve as a case study for assessing the impacts of rapid CO2 emissions on ocean carbonate chemistry, biota, and climate. Marine carbonate records of ETM-2 are better preserved than those of the PETM due to more subdued carbonate dissolution. As yet, however, the magnitude of this carbon cycle perturbation has not been well constrained. Here, we present the first records of surface ocean acidification for ETM-2, based on stable boron isotope records in mixed-layer planktic foraminifera from two midlatitude ODP sites (1210 in the North Pacific and 1265 in the SE Atlantic), which indicate conservative minimum global sea surface acidification of −0.20 +0.12/−0.13 pH units. Using these estimates of pH and temperature as constraints on carbon cycle model simulations, we conclude that the total mass of C, released over a period of 15 to 25 kyr during ETM-2, likely ranged from 2,600 to 3,800 Gt C, which is greater than previously estimated on the basis of other observations (i.e., stable carbon isotopes and carbonate compensation depth) alone.
