The present study investigated the effect of diminazene, lisinopril, or valsartan on adenine-induced chronic kidney disease (CKD) in rats. The animals were divided into five groups (n = 6). The first and second groups received normal diet and adenine in the feed at a dose of 0.25% w/w for 35 days, respectively. The third, fourth, and fifth groups were treated as the second group but also received diminazene (15 mg/kg/day), lisinopril (10 mg/kg/day), and valsartan (30 mg/kg/day), respectively, for 35 days. Adenine significantly increased plasma urea, creatinine, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), calcium, phosphorus, and uric acid. In addition, adenine increased urinary albumin/creatinine ratio and N-Acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase (NAG)/creatinine ratio and reduced creatinine clearance. Adenine also significantly increased the plasma concentrations of inflammatory cytokines (plasma tumor necrosis factor-alpha [TNF-α] and interleukin-1beta [IL-1β]) and significantly reduced antioxidant indices (catalase, glutathione reductase [GR], and superoxide dismutase [SOD]). Histopathologically, renal tissue from adenine-treated rats showed necrosis of renal tubules, tubular casts, shrunken glomeruli, and increased renal fibrosis. All drugs ameliorated adenine-induced biochemical and histopathological changes. The protective effect of the three drugs used is, at least partially, due to their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Our results show that administration of diminazene, lisinopril, or valsartan had a comparable effect on the reversal of the biochemical and histopathological indices of adenine-induced CKD in rats.

Introduction: A rapid and sensitive COVID-19 diagnostic test is required to aid in the prevention and control of the current COVID-19 pandemic spread. We developed a colorimetric, rapid, and sensitive RT-LAMP assay for the diagnosis of COVID-19 viral infection. Methodology: Complete genome sequences of 41 SARS-CoV-2 isolates from Oman were used in this study. Three primer sets (CoV_S1, CoV_S2, CoV_M1) were developed from all Omani SARS-CoV-2 genome sequences available at the time, targeting the spike protein gene and the M gene. The primer set (CoV_S1) was found to be the most sensitive and specific among the three designed sets. The sensitivity and specificity of the assay were compared to that of qRT-PCR. Direct testing of SARS-CoV-2 spiked saliva with the developed assay was evaluated. Lyophilized colorimetric assays were stored at room temperature and 4 °C and their ability to detect positive samples were tested for a period of 8 weeks. Results: The RT-LAMP assay was validated by testing 145 COVID-19 clinical samples with a sensitivity of 96.9% and specificity of 94.7% when compared to the validated qRT-PCR assay. The assay specificity was tested against SARS-CoV Frankfurt 1 RNA virus and avian coronaviruses as they tested negative with the developed assay. The assay was lyophilized and managed to detect the positive samples colorimetrically when stored at 4 °C for up to 8 weeks. Conclusions: The assay can be utilized in its current form as a screening assay with the advantages of being simpler, quicker, and cheaper than the qRT-PCR.

In the present study, a hepatic mass measured 9×11×5 cm in the right hepatic lobe was detected incidentally in a less than two years old male Somali goat during routine meat inspection at the Central Muscat Municipality Slaughterhouse, Oman. Gross and microscopic examination revealed a hepatocellular adenoma, a rare finding in goats.

Liver fibrosis still life-threatening problem and searching out ameliorative products motives many scientists, so this work evaluated the anti-fibrotic and antioxidant role of naringenin (NAR) against thioacetamide (TAA) induced liver fibrosis. Fifty adult male albino rats randomly divided into 5 groups (10 each); the first kept as control; the second treated I/P by 200 mg/kg TAA twice a week for 8 weeks; the third was gavaged daily with 50 mg /kg/ b.wt of NAR for 8 weeks; the fourth was co-treated by TAA and NAR while the fifth was treated with TAA for 8 w then gavaged daily by NAR for 1 month. TAA administration significantly increases the hepatic cell enzymes (ALT, AST, ALP and GGT) in the serum referring to hepatic cell destruction with an increase in hepatic MDA with a reduction in GSH concentrations, antioxidant enzyme activities as well as down regulation of their expression levels. NAR administration either with or after TAA ameliorates this effect suggesting its antioxidant ability. In the fibrotic pathway, TAA treatment up-regulates the expression levels of fibrogenic biomarkers (TGF-β, collagen 1α and fibronectin) genes while NAR down-regulates these genes suggesting its anti-fibrotic ability. Histopathological analysis confirms the biochemical results. In conclusion, NAR ameliorates the deleterious effect of TAA through its antioxidant and anti-fibrotic abilities.

Brucellosis is among the most prevalent zoonotic infections in Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) countries, critically impacting human and animal health. A comprehensive review of studies on antibiotic susceptibility and therapeutic regimes for brucellosis in ruminants and humans in the MENA region was conducted to evaluate the current therapeutic management in this region. Different scientific databases were searched for peer-reviewed original English articles published from January 1989 to February 2021. Reports from research organizations and health authorities have been taken into consideration. Brucella melitensis and Brucella abortus have been reported from the majority of MENA countries, suggesting a massive prevalence particularly of B. melitensis across these countries. Several sporadic cases of brucellosis relapse, therapeutic failure, and antibiotic resistance of animal and human isolates have been reported from the MENA region. However, several studies proved that brucellae are still in-vitro susceptible to the majority of antibiotic compounds and combinations in current recommended World Health Organization (WHO) treatment regimens, for example, levofloxacin, tetracyclines, doxycycline, streptomycin, ciprofloxacin, chloramphenicol, gentamicin, tigecycline, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. The current review presents an overview on resistance development of brucellae and highlights the current knowledge on effective antibiotics regimens for treating human brucellosis.

Cefdinir is one of the broad spectrum cephalosporin used as a replacement to amoxicillin in allergic pediatric population. There are reports of forming red stool in patients receiving cefdinir along with iron or iron containing preparations. This is a benign interaction and wane upon completion/discontinuation of cefdinir therapy. This case report describes a 6-month-old boy whose parents were distressed when they found reddening of their ward's diaper while taking cefdinir in presence of iron supplements.

Fenpropathrin (FNP) is a member of the synthetic pyrethroids. Herein, the present study was conducted to investigate, for the first time, the potentially harmful effects of FNP on the reproductive system of male rats. In addition, the prophylactic or concurrent influence of camel milk (CM) was assessed. Adult male rats were divided into five groups; control, vehicle control (oil), CM (2ml/rat/day), FNP (15mg/kg bwt/60 days), CM/FNP (prophylaxis) and FNP /CM (co-treated) groups. Sperm morphology, count, serum testosterone (TES), luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), testicular enzymes, and comet assay analysis were estimated. In addition, histopathology, the ultrastructure of testicular tissue and apoptosis were evaluated. Reduced body weight and gonadosomatic index were observed in the FNP exposed group. TES, LH, FSH were markedly declined following FNP treatment. SOD and TAC concentrations were reduced while PC and TBARS were significantly elevated in FNP group indicating oxidative stress. Furthermore, FNP induced DNA damage and apoptosis in the testis which was evidenced histopathologically and by electron microscope examination. CM significantly counteracted FNP reprotoxic effects, particularly at the prophylactic routine (CM/FNP) than the co-exposure (FNP/CM) one. Conclusively, these findings verified that CM could be a potential candidate therapy against FNP reprotoxic impacts.

Background Diabetes mellitus (DM) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are common causes of morbidity and mortality. Flaxseed contains several bioactive compounds that have been shown to possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties. The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible effect of flaxseed in diabetic rats with adenine–induced CKD. Methods Male Wister rats (n = 48) were randomly divided into seven equal groups and treated for 33 consecutive days as follows: G1: control. G2 adenine, G3: streptozotocin (STZ), G4: flaxseed, G5: adenine+flaxseed, G6: STZ+flaxseed, G7: adenine+STZ+flaxseed). DM or CKD were experimentally induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ) or by adenine via oral gavage, respectively. Results Rats fed adenine alone exhibited several changes including decreased body weight, increased food and water intake and urine output, increased urinary albumin/creatinine ratio. They also showed an increase in plasma urea and, creatinine, indoxyl sulfate, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin and cystatin C, and a decrease in renalase activity. These were associated with significant changes in inflammatory and oxidative biomarkers, e.g., increase in 8-isoprostane, 8 -hydroxy -2-deoxy guanosine and decrease in antioxidant enzymes, as well as increase in interleukins 1β and 6, and NF-κB, and a decrease in interlukin-10. Histopathologically, there was increased tubular necrosis and fibrosis. Concomitant administration of adenine and STZ further worsened the renal damage induced by adenine alone. Flaxseed significantly ameliorated the changes caused by adenine and STZ, given either singly or in combination. Conclusion These findings suggest that flaxseed is a potential therapeutic agent in attenuating the progression of CKD in diabetes.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of feeding high and low concentrate diets on feed intake and feed efficiency, the morphological characteristics of the rumen papillae, and meat quality of Holstein steers fattened under hot climate conditions in Oman. Ten male Holstein calves, of 5 months of age, were selected for the experiment. The animals were fed concentrate and Rhodes grass hay and were divided into two groups of high concentrate (HC, n = 5) and low concentrate diets (LC, n = 5), in which their feed intake, weight gain, and feed efficiency were evaluated across three growing periods. Cisplatin (CP) is commonly used in the treatment of various solid tumors. Its use, however, is hampered by nephrotoxicity. In this study, we compared the effect of betaine and melatonin given singly, with that of a combination of these two agents on CP-induced nephrotoxicity in mice. CP (20 mg/kg, given intraperitoneally on the 8th day of 12 days of the experiment) showed the typical physiological, biochemical, and histologic features of nephrotoxicity. CP-treated mice showed a significant reduction in food intake, body weight, and urine and fecal output. It also induced significant increases in the plasma concentrations of urea, creatinine, uric acid, phosphorous, adiponectin, interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, transforming growth factor -β1, tumor necrosis factor-α, and cystatin C. All these effects were significantly reduced by daily administration of betaine or melatonin at oral doses of 200 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg, respectively. Furthermore, using the two agents in combination caused further significant reductions in the above parameters. These findings suggest that betaine and melatonin concomitant use is likely to provide greater protection against CP-induced nephrotoxicity than when they are given singly, rendering them potentially suitable and safe agents to use in clinical trials to assess their possible beneficial actions in cancer patients receiving CP.

Cisplatin (CP) is a potent anticancer drug used to treat solid tumors. Its use, however, is dose-limited by its nephrotoxicity. We aimed to compare the effect of melatonin and curcumin given singly, with that of a combination of these two agents on CP-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. CP (6 mg/kg, given once intraperitoneally) induced nephrotoxicity as evidenced by several significant adverse physiological, biochemical and histopathological actions that included a reduction in body weight, increased urine production, and significant alterations in some conventional and novel renal damage indices in plasma, urine and kidneys. CP also elevated several pro-inflammatory cytokines and caused renal oxidative/nitrosative stress. Supplementation with either curcumin (200 mg/kg) or melatonin (10 mg /kg) given singly by oral gavage for eight consecutive days prior to CP injection and four days thereafter, significantly mitigated the adverse renal effects of CP, by attenuating the pro-inflammatory and apoptotic mediators and improving antioxidant competence in renal tissues of CP- treated rats. When curcumin and melatonin were given together, the ameliorative effect was augmented in some of the measured indices e.g. tumor necrosis factor alpha, cystatin C, uric acid, phosphorus in plasma and, urine creatinine and creatinine clearance. Renal platinum concertation was reduced more with curcumin than that with melatonin, while the reduction was maximized when both melatonin and curcumin were given. Pending further pharmacological and toxicological studies, a combination of these two agents is likely to be mor effective in mitigating the adverse renal effects of CP administered to cancer patients.

Objectives A recent discussion surrounding the extension of antenatal corticosteroid (ACS) use beyond 34 weeks of gestation did not include the subgroup of infants of diabetic mothers (IDM). We aimed to examine the association between ACS exposure and outcomes in neonates born at term and at near-term gestation in a large cohort of IDMs. Methods We selected 13976 eligible near-term and term infants who were included in the PEARL-Peristat Perinatal Registry Study (PPS). We assessed the association of ACS exposure with neonatal outcomes in a multivariate regression model that controlled for diabetes mellitus (DM) and other perinatal variables. Results The incidence of DM was 28% (3,895 of 13,976) in the cohort. Caesarean section was performed in one-third of the study population. The incidence of ACS exposure was low (1.8%) and typically occurred>2 weeks before delivery. The incidence rates of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS)/ transient tachypnoea of newborns (TTN), all-cause neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admissions, NICU admissions for hypoglycaemia, and low 5-min Apgar scores were 3.5, 8.8, 1.3, and 0.1%, respectively. In a multivariate regression model, ACS was associated with a slight increase in NICU admissions (OR: 1.44; 95% CI: 1.04–2.03; p=0.028), but not with RDS/TTN. Conclusions Although the low exposure rate was a limitation, ACS administration did not reduce respiratory morbidity in near-term or term IDMs. It was independently associated with an increase in NICU admissions. Randomized controlled trials are required to assess the efficacy and safety of ACS administration in diabetic mothers at late gestation.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus poses a major challenge to the poultry industry and human health in Egypt. Twenty one households and eight duck farms in Sharkia Province, Egypt were investigated for the presence of avian influenza virus (AIV) and/or duck hepatitis virus 1 (DHV-1). Mortality rates among the investigated farms and yards were, 18.9% (69/365) of native ducks, 60.9% (25/41) of Pekin ducks, 60.2% (6306/10473) of Muscovy ducks and 44.9% (1353/3015) of Mallard ducks. The RT-PCR revealed the circulation of HPAI-H5N1 virus (81/104) among the examined birds with a high percentage in Muscovy (83.7%) and Pekin (83.4%) ducks. Interestingly, co-infection of HPAI and DHV-1 viruses in three ducklings with age of 4–19 days was detected. Severe neurological signs with high mortality were observed in ducklings as early as 4 days of age. Influenza virus antigen was detected in the neurons and glial cells of the brain, hepatocytes, and the intestinal submucosal plexus. Although, genetic characterization of H5N1 isolates revealed HPAIV of clade 2.2.1.2, such increased mortalities and neurological signs regardless of the duck age might imply the natural selection of HPAI in ducks. Crucial monitoring of the disease situation in ducks is essential for the implementation of an effective prevention and control program. This study aimed to assess the potential apoptotic and oxidative damaging impacts of Triclosan (TCS) and Sodium Fluoride (NaF) administered separately or in combination, in rats for thirty days. For this purpose, forty immature female Sprague-Dawley rats were equally allocated into five groups. TCS group administered 185 mg TCS/kg Bw dissolved in distilled water (DW), while its control group received only DW. NaF group was given 50 mg/kg NaF in corn oil BW and its respective control had corn oil alone. The co-treated group was administered TCS and NaF. The oxidative stress biomarkers were evaluated in lung tissue homogenate and apoptotic proteins (BcL-2 and Caspase-3) expression were quantified in lung tissues. The results of TCS or NaF treated groups revealed a prominent depletion of super oxide dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT) and Glutathione (GSH) in lung tissue homogenate. On contrary, a marked increase in the tissue levels of Malondialdehyde (MDA) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) enzymatic assay levels. The co-exposed group evoked less severity in the oxidative stress biomarkers concentration than individually exposed groups. The apoptotic genes protein expression was significantly higher in TCS or NaF treated rats when compared to the control with intense to moderate immunolabeling of the bronchiolar lining epithelium and surrounding mononuclear inflammatory cells. On the contrary, no significant differences were detected in the expression of the investigated apoptotic biomarkers between the control and the combined exposed group. We concluded that the exposure to either TCS or NaF resulted in significant perturbations in lung tissue after short term oral administration at variable instances but the co-exposure resulted in less severe toxicological consequences.

A severe outbreak of diarrhea associated with poor growth was reported in ten newly weaned goat kids that originated from a research farm (Group A). Two of these kids underwent necropsy examination. Five goat kids of the same age maintained in the same pen showed no clinical signs (Group B). Background An optimal level of vitamin D is necessary for normal bone growth. Recently, vitamin D has been linked to many neurological disorders, changes in antioxidant capacity levels, and cognitive function decline in old age; thus, the aim was to evaluate the effect of vitamin D and antioxidant levels on the cognitive function parameters of children with idiopathic short stature (ISS). Results A prospective case-control study was conducted with 60 primary school-aged children with ISS who were compared to 60 unrelated healthy age- and sex-matched children as a control group. A complete clinical evaluation; anthropometric measurements; neurocognitive function parameters using the Stanford-Binet test, fifth edition; vitamin D level; total antioxidant capacity (TAC); total oxidative stress (TOS); and oxidative stress index (OSI) were measured. A total of 83.3% of children with ISS had a vitamin D level < 30 ng/ml with significantly lower vitamin D levels than the control group. The TAC level was significantly lower in children with ISS than in healthy children. Children with ISS had an average level for all of the cognitive function parameters but a lower non-verbal IQ, full-scale IQ, fluid reasoning, knowledge, quantitative reasoning, and working memory than healthy controls. A positive correlation was found between vitamin D level and all anthropometric measurements, all IQ parameters, and TAC levels in the studied children. A positive correlation was found between TAC and all IQ parameters. Conclusion Vitamin D level and antioxidant capacity level have a major impact on cognitive function parameters in children with ISS.

The aim of this study was to investigate some biochemical indices of inflammation and oxidative and nitrosative stresses in the gastrointestinal tract of mice with experimental chronic kidney disease (CKD) and treated with gum arabic (GA). Male CD1 mice (n = 28) were randomly distributed into four groups and treated for four consecutive weeks: group 1: Control: received the same diet without treatment until the end of the study; group 2: Adenine: switched to a powder diet containing adenine (0.2% w/w in feed); group 3: Gum acacia (GA): given normal feed and GA in drinking water at a concentration of 15% w/v; and group 4: Adenine + GA: given adenine in the feed as in the second group plus GA in the drinking water at concentration of 15% w/v. CKD was induced to mice by adenine feeding and concomitantly treated with the prebiotic dietary fiber gum acacia, GA (15% in drinking water). Duodenal mucosa from CKD mice had significantly higher concentrations of TNF-alfa, IL- 6, and TGF-beta-1 and lipid peroxidation. Moreover, low concentrations of IL-10, some antioxidants (catalase, glutathione reductase, total antioxidant capacity, and superoxide dismutase), and nuclear factor erythroid 2–related factor 2 were found in the duodenum. The levels of nitrosative stress (nitrite, nitrate, and total nitrate) were significantly increased by CKD, as well as the concentrations of ammonia and urea creatinine in the cecal content. Concomitant GA treatment significantly mitigated these harmful effects. Taken together, GA reduces inflammation and duodenal oxidative and nitrosative stress in the gastrointestinal tract of mice with CKD.

Chemokines are important in the development and progression of tumors. We investigated the expression of CXCL14 and CXCL16 in colon cancer. Expression of mRNA was assessed in primary tumors and lymph nodes and CXCL16 mRNA levels were correlated to patient&rsquo, s survival. Protein expression was investigated by two-color immunofluorescence and immunomorphometry. CXCL14 and CXCL16 mRNA levels and protein expression were significantly higher in colon cancer primary tumors compared to apparently normal colon tissue. Positive cells were tumor cells, as revealed by anti-CEA and anti-EpCAM staining. CXCL16, but not CXCL14, mRNA levels were significantly higher in hematoxylin and eosin positive (H&amp, E(+)) compared to H&amp, E(&minus, ) colon cancer lymph nodes or control nodes (P &lt, 0.0001). CXCL16 mRNA was expressed in 5/5 colon cancer cell lines while CXCL14 was expressed significantly in only one. Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that colon cancer patients with lymph nodes expressing high or very high levels (7.2 and 11.4 copies/18S rRNA unit, respectively) of CXCL16 mRNA had a decreased mean survival time of 30 and 46 months at the 12-year follow-up (P = 0.04, P = 0.005, respectively). In conclusion, high expression of CXCL16 mRNA in regional lymph nodes of colon cancer patients is a sign of a poor prognosis.

This study was performed to assess the ability of the food genotoxicant 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) to induce DNA damage and oxidative injuries in the liver of mice as a possible mechanism of toxic action and to evaluate the role of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) in inhibiting these injuries. For this purpose, 80 mice were assigned into four equal groups of 20 mice each. Group 1 was kept as control and group 2 was given 5-HMF (250 mg/kg bw) by intraperitoneal (IP) injection 3 times weekly for 4 weeks. Group 3 received EVOO (300 μl/kg bw) orally daily for 4 weeks. Group 4 was co-treated with both 5-HMF (250 mg/kg bw) with IP injection and EVOO (300 μl/kg bw) orally 3 times weekly for 4 weeks. IP injection of 5-HMF resulted in a significant decrease in albumin, globulin, and total protein contents and significant increases in alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, and alkaline phosphatase activities. Administration of EVOO alone or with 5-HMF reduced the 5-HMF-induced alterations and restored the liver function biomarkers, antioxidant defense system, and histoarchitecture of the liver to normal values. EVOO also inhibited the genotoxic and apoptotic effects of 5-HMF suggesting that EVOO could provide liver protection through its powerful antioxidant and confirm its good nutriceutical and pharmacological properties.

In the context of prematurity, lethal congenital airways malforamtion can be masked by the symptoms of respiratory distress syndrome. A high index of suspicion is required. We present the case of a 28-week preterm infant, with atypical protracted respiratory insufficiency despite the escalation of mechanical ventilation. The possibility of airway obstruction was considered in view of severe chest retraction while on the mechanical ventilator. It was also difficult to pass suction catheters beyond a certain depth in the trachea; however, intubation of the upper trachea was accomplished twice without difficulty. Flexible bronchoscopy revealed complete tracheal ring with severe tracheal stenosis; there was no evidence of tracheo-oesophageal fistula. Due to advanced multi-organ dysfunction at diagnosis, a decision was made with the family to re-orientate from intensive care to compassionate care. Ethical considerations in similar cases should incorporate the improved outcomes of prematurity and recent advances in tracheal reconstruction.

Brucellosis is a highly contagious zoonosis of significance for public health and economic performance in both endemic and non-endemic countries. Historically, brucellosis was recognised for the first time in the Mediterranean region and it is hypothesised that it subsequently spread worldwide. It is associated in humans with poor food hygiene, is transmitted by direct and indirect contact with animals and crosses international boundaries with relative ease. In resource-limited nations, brucellosis is often a very common but neglected disease. Diagnosis and control of brucellosis is still a challenge. This review focuses on the historical and current status of the disease in the 23 countries with coastlines along the Mediterranean. This work is mainly based on information collected and provided by local authorities, governmental bodies and National Reference Laboratories for Brucellosis, as well as national experts in each country. National and international studies from each country were reviewed and scientific output published in peerreviewed journals was included. Moreover, data published in local languages and not internationally available have also been included.

The utility of mRNA and protein determinations of G protein-coupled receptor 35, that is, GPR35a (GPR35 V1) and GPR35b (GPR35 V2/3), as indicators of outcome for colon cancer patients after curative surgery was investigated. Expression levels of V1 and V2/3 GPR35, carcinoembryonic antigen and CXCL17 mRNAs were assessed in primary tumours and regional lymph nodes of 121 colon cancer patients (stage I–IV), colon cancer cell lines and control colon epithelial cells using real-time quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. Expression of G protein-coupled receptor 35 was investigated by two-colour immunohistochemistry and immunomorphometry. GPR35 V2/3 mRNA, but not V1 mRNA, was expressed in colon cancer cell lines, primary colon tumours and control colon epithelial cells. Our study designed to study the potential of potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) oral exposure to induce damage in male rat brain and to compare the possible protective role of vitamin C (VC) either pre and/or concurrent supply against (K2Cr2O7) induced changes. Thirty male rats were divided into five groups. First control group received distilled water (C), second received 120 mg/kg b.wt (VC), third received 25 mg/kg b.wt K2Cr2O7 (Cr), fourth group received VC together with K2Cr2O7 by the same former doses (VC + Cr), and the fifth group received the same oral doses of VC 2 weeks prior to and along with K2Cr2O7 for 6 weeks (VC + Cr pro/co treated). The obtained results revealed that K2Cr2O7 induced a significant decrease in cholinergic activity, glutathione reductase GR activity, reduced glutathione content GSH and ATP levels. Furthermore, K2Cr2O7 induced a significant increase in oxidative DNA damage indicated by 8-hydroxy 2'-deoxyguanosine (8OH2'dG) and formation of apoptotic DNA ladders, significant increase in malondialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyl, and lactate dehydrogenase enzyme. Increased mRNA expression of pro-apoptotic genes, including caspase-3, p53, and Bax, unlike Bcl-2 expression, was decreased. K2Cr2O7 increased caspase-3 and decreased Bcl-2 immuno-labeling. VC supply noticeably ameliorates K2Cr2O7-induced changes which were more significantly in VC pro and concurrent supplement rather than VC concurrent supply only. Finally, it is concluded that K2Cr2O7 oral administration induced oxidative apoptotic changes in rat brain and confirms the usefulness of VC pre and concurrent supply for the amelioration of K2Cr2O7-induced events more significantly than VC concurrent supply only.

Skin lesions were reported in a group of quarantined Omani native cattle for exportation purpose during January 2018. The skin lesions were reported in 17 animals out of 140 and were scattered over the head, neck, back and perineal region of the animals. Lesions varied from paint-brush matted hairs to wart-like lesions that are up to 2 cm in diameter. Skin scraping samples were obtained from the living animals and were directly stained with gram stain. Histologically, there was severe multifocal exudative dermatitis with hyperkeratosis. Dermis was infiltrated with neutrophils, mononuclear cells, and numerous branching filaments coccoid bodies. Bacterial culture on sheep blood agar revealed gray to white, beta hemolytic, raised and irregularly shaped colonies. Gram staining showed gram positive branching filaments with both transverse and longitudinal fragments formed from packs of coccoid cells confined with Dermatophilus congolensis. Animals were treated successfully with 3 doses of intra muscular injection of long-acting oxytetracycline with topical application of antibiotic spray. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of dermatophilosis in Omani cattle.

The highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) subtype H5N1 threatens animal and human health worldwide. Susceptibility of pigeons to HPAIV (H5N1) and their role in avian influenza virus transmission to domestic birds and humans remain questionable. In this study, an outbreak in domestic pigeons (1 to 18 months old) with 50% mortality was investigated. Pigeons exhibited nervous manifestations and greenish diarrhoea. Necropsy of the naturally infected pigeons revealed congestion of the internal organs, particularly the lungs and brain. The HPAIV subtype H5N1 designated A/Pigeon/Egypt/SHAH-5803/2011 was isolated from a 40-day-old pigeon. Sequencing of the haemagglutinin gene showed it to be closely related to viruses in group 2.2.1/C. Intravenous inoculation of the isolate in chickens induced 100% mortality within 2 days post inoculation and the intravenous pathogenicity index was 2.7. Virus pathogenicity and transmissibility was determined experimentally in 6-week-old domestic pigeons. Thirty per cent of pigeons inoculated oronasally with 10(6) median embryo infective dose showed congested beak, conjunctivitis, depression, and greenish diarrhoea. A mortality rate of 10% was recorded preceded by severe neurologic signs consisting of torticollis, incoordination, tremors, and wing paralysis. Pathological examination revealed a friable brain tissue and congested meningeal blood vessels. The lungs appeared oedematous and severely haemorrhagic. Subepicardial and petechial haemorrhages on the coronary fat were observed. Both infected and contact pigeons shed virus via the oropharynx and cloaca. To our knowledge, this is the first description and characterization of HPAIV in naturally infected pigeons in Egypt. Our findings reveal that pigeons can indeed be susceptible to H5N1 HPAIVs and could be a source of infection to other birds and humans.

In this study, the induced behavioral changes and neuropathology of prolonged exposure to high doses of Zinc nanoparticles (Zn-NPs) in two species of tilapia, T. nilotica and T. zilli. was investigated. Fish that were treated with 2000 μg Zn-NPs/L showed severe degenerative changes and vacuolation in the neuropil, particularly of the optic tectum, with congestion of the blood vessels of both the cerebral cortex and the meninx primitive. Loss of the Purkinje cell layer of the cerebellum was noticed as well. Fish showed behavioral changes that included loss of equilibrium, slower movement and swimming sideways. No significant differences (P < 0.05) were observed between T. nilotica and T. zilli in behavioral or pathological changes. The results highlighted the Zn-NPs neurotoxicity and its accompanied neuropathology and related behavioral changes in fish. More caution is needed during the usage of Zn-NPs to avoid possible deleterious impacts on human and animal health.
