1. Ion beam bunching via phase rotation in cascading laser-driven ion acceleration

Abstract

The ion beam bunching in a cascaded target normal sheath acceleration is investigated by theoretical analysis and particle-in-cell simulations. It is found that a proton beam can be accelerated and bunched simultaneously by injecting it into the rising sheath field at the rear side of a laser-irradiated foil target. In the rising sheath field, the ion phase rotation may take place since the back-end protons of the beam feels a stronger field than the front-end protons. Consequently, the injected proton beam can be compressed in the longitudinal direction. At last, the vital role of the ion beam bunching is illustrated by the integrated simulations of two successive stages in a cascaded acceleration., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We propose a hybrid laser-driven ion acceleration scheme using a combination target of a solid foil and a density-tailored background plasma. In the first stage, a sub-relativistic proton beam can be generated by the radiation pressure acceleration in the intense laser interaction with the solid foil. In the second stage, this sub-relativistic proton beam is further accelerated by the laser wakefield driven by the same laser pulse in a near-critical-density background plasma with a decreasing density profile. The propagating velocity of the laser front and the phase velocity of the excited wakefield wave are effectively lowered at the beginning of the second stage. By decreasing the background plasma density gradually from near critical density along the laser propagation direction, the wake travels faster and faster while it accelerates the protons. Consequently, the dephasing between the protons and the wake is postponed, and an efficient wakefield proton acceleration is achieved. This hybrid laser-driven proton acceleration scheme can be realized by using ultrashort laser pulses at the peak power of 10 PW for the generation of multi-GeV proton beams., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

We report directional point-contact spectroscopy data on the novel Bi2Te3/Fe1+yTe interfacial superconductor for a Bi2Te3 thickness of 9 quintuple layers, bonded by van der Waals epitaxy to a Fe1+yTe film at an atomically sharp interface. Our data show a very large superconducting twin-gap structure with an energy scale exceeding that of bulk FeSe or FeSe1-xTex by a factor of 4. While the larger gap is isotropic and attributed to a thin FeTe layer in proximity of the interface, the smaller gap has a pronounced anisotropy and is associated with proximity-induced superconductivity in the topological insulator Bi2Te3. Zero resistance is lost above 8 K, but superconducting fluctuations are visible up to at least 12 K and the large gap is replaced by a pseudogap that persists up to 40 K. The spectra show a pronounced zero-bias conductance peak in the superconducting state, which may be a signature of an unconventional pairing mechanism.

Abstract

The Global Consortium for the Classification of Fungi and fungus-like taxa is an international initiative of more than 550 mycologists to develop an electronic structure for the classification of these organisms. The members of the Consortium originate from 55 countries/regions worldwide, from a wide range of disciplines, and include senior, mid-career and early-career mycologists and plant pathologists. The Consortium will publish a biannual update of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa, to act as an international scheme for other scientists. Notes on all newly published taxa at or above the level of species will be prepared and published online on the Outline of Fungi website (https://www.outlineoffungi.org/), and these will be finally published in the biannual edition of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa. Comments on recent important taxonomic opinions on controversial topics will be included in the biannual outline. For example, 'to promote a more stable taxonomy in Fusarium given the divergences over its generic delimitation', or 'are there too many genera in the Boletales?' and even more importantly, 'what should be done with the tremendously diverse 'dark fungal taxa?' There are undeniable differences in mycologists' perceptions and opinions regarding species classification as well as the establishment of new species. Given the pluralistic nature of fungal taxonomy and its implications for species concepts and the nature of species, this consortium aims to provide a platform to better refine and stabilise fungal classification, taking into consideration views from different parties. In the future, a confidential voting system will be set up to gauge the opinions of all mycologists in the Consortium on important topics. The results of such surveys will be presented to the International Commission on the Taxonomy of Fungi (ICTF) and the Nomenclature Committee

The website www.basidio.org/ is established with the aim of gathering and compiling these scattered data on a single platform. This website will provide an up-to-date outline of Basidiomycota, notes on orders, families and genera of Basidiomycota and updated accounts of each genus based on the most current literature, in a user-friendly way.

Abstract

Within Agaricus subg. Minores, A. sect. Minores remains a little-studied section due generally to its delicate sporocarps often lacking taxonomically relevant morphological characters. To reconstruct the section, using the recent taxonomic system based on divergence times, and to evaluate the species diversity of A. sect. Minores in the Greater Mekong Subregion, 165 specimens were incorporated in phylogenetic analyses. A dated tree based on nuclear ITS, LSU and tef1-α sequence data allowed us to better circumscribe A. subg. Minores and to propose a new subgenus, A. subg. Minoriopsis, which is only known from tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. A larger tree based on ITS sequences indicated that, with 81 phylogenetic species, the reconstructed section Minores is now one of the largest sections in the genus. Within A. subg. Minores, a new section, A. sect. Leucocarpi, and eleven new species are described from the Greater Mekong Subregion. Thirty-eight species of A. sect. Minores from this region of Asia were distributed in multiple clades that successively diverged over the past 24 million years. In contrast, species reported from Europe mostly grouped in a single non-tropical clade, suggesting a major species diversification following the middle Miocene climatic optimum.

16. β4GalT1 promotes inflammation in human osteoarthritic fibroblast-like synoviocytes by enhancing autocrine TNF-α activity.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Synovial inflammation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA), and β4GalT1 has been reported to be involved in the inflammatory process. The aim of our study was to investigate the role of β4GalT1 in the progression of inflammation and analyze the association between β4GalT1 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in human OA fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Primary cultured FLS isolated from OA synovial tissues were cultured, and the levels of β4GalT1, TNF-α, MMP-3, p/t-ERK, p/t-JNK, and p/t-P38 were analyzed by Western blotting. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was performed to measure the secretion of TNF-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, and IL-6 in OA-FLS. Immunofluorescence staining was used to examine the co-localization of β4GalT1 and TNF-α or THY1. RT-PCR was used to detect the transfection efficiency of β4GalT1. RESULTS: The expression of β4GalT1 was increased in OA-FLS. β4GalT1 promoted cell invasion, MMP-3 production, and the secretion of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6. si-TNF-α attenuated the β4GalT1-enhanced cell invasion and inflammatory factor secretion in OA-FLS. Furthermore, β4GalT1 increased autocrine TNF-α signaling in OA-FLS. β4GalT1 knockdown successfully decreased autocrine TNF-α activity, while β4GalT1 overexpression increased autocrine TNF-α activity in OA-FLS. Moreover, β4GalT1 enhanced the ERK, JNK, and P38 MAPK signaling pathways through the induction of autocrine TNF-α signaling in OA-FLS. Abstract

In this study, we report electrical transport and magnetization characterization of a superconducting Fe1+xTe/Bi2Te3 bilayer grown via a chemical reaction scheme using the molecular beam epitaxy technique. The results provide evidence that spontaneous vortices and ferromagnetic order attributed to excess Fe interstitials exists in the Fe1+xTe layer. The coexistence of the superconducting phase and the ferromagnetic interstitials causes a dramatic enhancement of the positive magnetization component in the superconducting state, which can be interpreted as a result of the paramagnetic Meissner effect.

Abstract

Pd modified BiOBr flower-like microspheres have been synthesised via a facile one-pot ethylene glycol assisted solvothermal process in the presence of reactable ionic liquid 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C16mim]Br). The as prepared samples were characterised by multiple techniques to investigate the structure, morphology and photocatalytic properties. Ionic liquid [C16mim]Br was introduced to improve the dispersity of Pd nanoparticles, so as to construct the tight junctions between Pd nanoparticles and BiOBr. The Pd nanoparticles could distribute uniformly on the surface of BiOBr. The photocatalytic abilities of the as prepared photocatalysts were evaluated using rhodamine B (RhB) and ciprofloxacin as target pollutants. After the introduction of Pd, the photocatalytic activities of Pd/BiOBr composites have been enhanced under visible light irradiation. The 0·5 wt-% Pd/BiOBr possessed the optimal photocatalytic activity, which was about 6·6 times higher than pure BiOBr for the degradation of RhB. The results of diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence, photocurrent and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy demonstrated the enhanced photocatalytic performance could be attributed to the introduction of Pd, which improves the separation efficiency of the photogenerated electrons and holes. The trapping experiments of radicals indicated that hole was the main reactive species for the photocatalytic degradation of RhB. A possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed that the Pd nanoparticles promote charge transfer, and inhibit the recombination probability of the photogenerated electrons and holes, which is beneficial for improving the photocatalytic performance of BiOBr. Abstract

Highly selective molecularly imprinted nanocomposites MIPRhB-PPy/TiO2 were successfully prepared by surface molecular imprinting technique with rhodamine B (RhB) as template molecule. The prepared MIPRhB-PPy/TiO2 coated with a thin imprinted layer could respond to visible light. The static and dynamic binding experiments revealed that MIPRhB-PPy/TiO2 possessed strong affinity, high adsorption capacity and fast adsorption rate for RhB. The selectivity experiments indicated that MIPRhB-PPy/TiO2 had excellent recognition selectivity for RhB. Selective photocatalytic degradation experiments indicated that the apparent rate constant (k) for the photodegradation of RhB over MIPRhB-PPy/TiO2 is 0.0158 min-1, being 3.6 times of that over non-imprinted nanocomposites NIP-PPy/TiO2 (0.0044 min-1). Compared with the NIP-PPy/TiO2, MIPRhB-PPy/TiO2 showed higher photocatalytic selectivity toward RhB under visible light, which was attributed the introduction of the imprinted cavities on the surface of MIPRhB-PPy/TiO2. Moreover, MIPRhB-PPy/TiO2 exhibited high reusability and stability. Abstract: Results of a first investigation of the response of gallium nitride nanowires to high-Z heavy ion irradiation are reported. Pre-irradiation characterization of the gallium nitride nanowires used in these experiments showed that that they had a two-phase coaxial structure, consisting of an outer shell of zinc–blende-phase gallium nitride and a coaxial core of wurtzite-phase gallium nitride. Observed radiation interactions with the two-phase structure are reported. A nanowire-based field effect transistor using these GaN nanowires showed normal real-time operation during irradiation by Krypton-78 heavy ions under high bias conditions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

The global diversity of fungi has been estimated between 2 to 11 million species, of which only about 155 000 have been named. Most fungi are invisible to the unaided eye, but they represent a major component of biodiversity on our planet, and play essential ecological roles, supporting life as we know it. Although approximately 20 000 fungal genera are presently recognised, the ecology of most remains undetermined. Despite all this diversity, the mycological community actively researches some fungal genera more commonly than others. This poses an interesting question: why have some fungal genera impacted mycology and related fields more than others? To address this issue, we conducted a bibliometric analysis to identify the top 100 most cited fungal genera. A thorough database search of the Web of Science, Google Scholar, and PubMed was performed to establish which genera are most cited. The most cited 10 genera are Saccharomyces , Candida , Aspergillus , Fusarium , Penicillium , Trichoderma , Botrytis , Pichia , Cryptococcus and Alternaria . Case studies are presented for the 100 most cited genera with general background, notes on their ecology and economic significance and important research advances. This paper provides a historic overview of scientific research of these genera and the prospect for further research. Abstract

Objective: To investigate the treatment method and effect of surgical resection and free flap repair of recurrent malignant tumors of maxillofacial paranasal sinus and skull base. Methods: The clinical data of 9 patients with recurrent maxillofacial paranasal sinus and skull base malignant tumors who underwent surgical resection and free flap repair in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery of Shandong Provincial Hospital from August 2009 to May 2019 were analyzed retrospectively, including 5 males and 4 females, aged 32-69 years. There were 4 cases of squamous cell carcinoma, 3 cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma, 1 case of myoepithelial carcinoma and 1 case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma. All patients were repaired with anterolateral femoral flap. The treatment process and postoperative effect were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Results: All patients were followed up from 16 months to 6 years. There were 6 cases of recurrence after operation, including 1 case of local recurrence and 5 cases of skull base and craniocerebral recurrence. The median tumor free survival time of recurrent patients was 35 months. Conclusion: Surgical resection and free flap repair can effectively prolong the life of patients with recurrent maxillofacial paranasal sinus and skull base malignant tumors.

Abstract

Objective: To explore the diagnosis and clinical features of internal carotid artery aneurysm in the skull base. Methods: The data of 15 patients with internal carotid aneurysms in the skull base diagnosed and treated by digital subtraction angiography (DSA) or CT angiography (CTA) in the Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong First Medical University from 1995 to 2017 were collected and analyzed. Among the 15 patients, 12 were males, and 3 were females, aging from 17 to 67 years old, with a median age of 44 years. Thirteen patients were diagnosed by DSA; the other two patients were diagnosed by CTA. Thirteen patients were diagnosed with pseudoaneurysm with the first symptom of epistaxis, in which eight patients underwent head trauma and 5 underwent radiotherapy of skull base tumor. The other two patients were diagnosed with true aneurysm presented headache and cranial nerve disorder. All patients were followed up for 2 to 12 years after treatment to see whether they were cured and survived. Results: Among the eight patients with a history of trauma, five patients were cured by embolization, two patients without embolization died of massive epistaxis, one patient died of progressive cerebral infarction after embolization. Among the five patients with radiotherapy of skull base tumor, one patient died of cerebral infarction after embolization, two patients died out of the hospital due to the recurrence of the primary tumor and intracranial invasion, one patient recovered well after embolization and surgical operation, one patient gave up treatment and died of massive hemorrhage out of hospital. In the other two patients with symptom of headache, one received embolization treatment outside the hospital after receiving mistake operation, and another one gave up treatment and died due to personal reasons. In total, four patients died in hospital, four died out of the hospital, and seven patients survived. Conclusions: Internal carotid artery aneurysm is a high-risk disease of anterior and middle skull base. For patients with epistaxis with a history of trauma and radiotherapy or patients with headaches and cranial nerve disorders, the possibility of the internal carotid artery aneurysm should be considered, in which DSA or CTA examination is essentially required for ensured diagnosis and disease evaluation.. The correct diagnosis and treatment by the otolaryngologist are crucial to the prognosis of the patient.

Abstract

Within Agaricus subg. Minores , A. sect. Minores remains a little-studied section due generally to its delicate sporocarps often lacking taxonomically relevant morphological characters. To reconstruct the section, using the recent taxonomic system based on divergence times, and to evaluate the species diversity of A. sect. Minores in the Greater Mekong Subregion, 165 specimens were incorporated in phylogenetic analyses. A dated tree based on nuclear ITS, LSU and tef1-α sequence data allowed us to better circumscribe A. subg. Minores and to propose a new subgenus, A. subg. Minoriopsis , which is only known from tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. A larger tree based on ITS sequences indicated that, with 81 phylogenetic species, the reconstructed section Minores is now one of the largest sections in the genus. Within A . subg. Minores , a new section, A . sect. Leucocarpi , and eleven new species are described from the Greater Mekong Subregion. Thirty-eight species of A. sect. Minores from this region of Asia were distributed in multiple clades that successively diverged over the past 24 million years. In contrast, species reported from Europe mostly grouped in a single non-tropical clade, suggesting a major species diversification following the middle Miocene climatic optimum.

Abstract

Objective: Through the retrospective analysis of the clinical data in 14 cases of invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (IFRS), the clinical characteristics, diagnosis and treatment of this disease were evaluated., Methods: Fourteen clinically confirmed cases of IFRS since January 2008 to October 2015 were evaluated.collected, the clinical features, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis were analyzed to obtain a more comprehensive understanding for clinical reference. Fourteen patients were confirmed by pathological examination as IFRS, including 9 cases of aspergillus, 4 cases of mucor, and 1 case of rhinocerebral zygomycosis; including 5 cases of acute IFRS, 9 cases of chronic IFRS. All patients were treated with endoscopic surgery and intravenous antifungal therapy., Results: Nine cases of chronic IFRS (including 1 case of mucor, 7 cases of aspergillus and 1 case of rhinocerebral zygomycosis) were cured, but the vision loss, diplopia or blindness, hard palate perforation remained. Five cases of acute IFRS included 3 cases of mucor and 2 cases of aspergillus. Among the 3 cases of mucor, 2 cases were died and 1 case was cured. Among the 2 cases of aspergillus, 1 patient was cured and the other patient died of electrolyte disorder after discharge from hospital., Conclusions: Patients with IFRS usually have diabetes. After the active surgical cleaning of lesion tissue and the systematic antifungal treatment with adequate dosage, these patients would have a better result. IFRS caused by mucor is ofen dangerous.

39. [Study on adductive reaction of Ni[(C4H9O)2PS2]2 with nitrogen base by spectrographic method].

Abstract

Reactions of Ni[(C4H9O)2PS2]2 (NiL2) with Pyridine, 4-methylpyridine, 3,5-lutidine, 2,4-lutidine and 2,4,6-lutidine have been studied by spectrophotometry in ethanol at 32 degrees C. With B = 2,4-lutidine and 2,4,6-lutidine, the formation of NiL2.B2 only is concluded. For other nitrogen bases(B), the adduct formation of NiL2.B and NiL2.B2 is established, and their adductive equilibrium constants (lg beta n) and molecules (n) have been discussed. All the NiL2.B and NiL2.B2 complexes exhibit virtually the same electronic spectra arising from the five-coordinate NiNS4 and six-coordinate NiN2S4 chromophore respectively. The adductive equilibrium constants (lg beta n) increase with basicity (pKa) of nitrogen bases and can be described by experimental formulas: lg beta 1 = -0.186 + 0.352 pKa; lg beta 2 = 3.16 + 0.083 pKa.
