1. Adaptive Activation Steering: A Tuning-Free LLM Truthfulness Improvement Method for Diverse Hallucinations Categories

Abstract

Recent studies have indicated that Large Language Models (LLMs) harbor an inherent understanding of truthfulness, yet often fail to express fully and generate false statements. This gap between "knowing" and "telling" poses a challenge for ensuring the truthfulness of generated content. To address this, we introduce Adaptive Activation Steering (ACT), a tuning-free method that adaptively shift LLM's activations in "truthful" direction during inference. ACT addresses diverse categories of hallucinations by utilizing diverse steering vectors and adjusting the steering intensity adaptively. Applied as an add-on across various models, ACT significantly improves truthfulness in LLaMA ($\uparrow$ 142\%), LLaMA2 ($\uparrow$ 24\%), Alpaca ($\uparrow$ 36\%), Vicuna ($\uparrow$ 28\%), and LLaMA2-Chat ($\uparrow$ 19\%). Abstract

This study introduces novel concepts in the analysis of limit order books (LOBs) with a focus on unveiling strategic insights into spread prediction and understanding the global mid-price (GMP) phenomenon. We define and analyze the total market order book bid--ask spread (TMOBBAS) and GMP, showcasing their significance in providing a deeper understanding of market dynamics beyond traditional LOB models. Employing high-frequency data, we comprehensively examine these concepts through various methodological lenses, including tail behavior analysis, dynamics of log-returns, and risk--return performance evaluation. Our findings reveal the intricate behavior of TMOBBAS and GMP under different market conditions, offering new perspectives on the liquidity, volatility, and efficiency of markets. 3. Evolving Benchmark Functions to Compare Evolutionary Algorithms via Genetic Programming

Abstract

In this study, we use Genetic Programming (GP) to compose new optimization benchmark functions. Optimization benchmarks have the important role of showing the differences between evolutionary algorithms, making it possible for further analysis and comparisons. We show that the benchmarks generated by GP are able to differentiate algorithms better than human-made benchmark functions. The fitness measure of the GP is the Wasserstein distance of the solutions found by a pair of optimizers. Additionally, we use MAP-Elites to both enhance the search power of the GP and also illustrate how the difference between optimizers changes by various landscape features. Our approach provides a novel way to automate the design of benchmark functions and to compare evolutionary algorithms.

Abstract

In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

Abstract

This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

Abstract

Human behavior anomaly detection aims to identify unusual human actions, playing a crucial role in intelligent surveillance and other areas. The current mainstream methods still adopt reconstruction or future frame prediction techniques. However, reconstructing or predicting low-level pixel features easily enables the network to achieve overly strong generalization ability, allowing anomalies to be reconstructed or predicted as effectively as normal data. Different from their methods, inspired by the Student-Teacher Network, we propose a novel framework called the Multilevel Guidance-Exploration Network(MGENet), which detects anomalies through the difference in high-level representation between the Guidance and Exploration network. Specifically, we first utilize the pre-trained Normalizing Flow that takes skeletal keypoints as input to guide an RGB encoder, which takes unmasked RGB frames as input, to explore motion latent features. Then, the RGB encoder guides the mask encoder, which takes masked RGB frames as input, to explore the latent appearance feature. Additionally, we design a Behavior-Scene Matching Module(BSMM) to detect scene-related behavioral anomalies. Abstract

In preclinical studies, a new antituberculosis drug regimen markedly reduced the time required to achieve relapse-free cure. This study aimed to preliminarily evaluate the efficacy and safety of this four-month regimen, consisting of clofazimine, prothionamide, pyrazinamide and ethambutol, with a standard six-month regimen in patients with drug-susceptible tuberculosis. An open-label pilot randomized clinical trial was conducted among the patients with newly diagnosed bacteriologically-confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis. The primary efficacy end-point was sputum culture negative conversion. Totally, 93 patients were included in the modified intention-to-treat population. The rates of sputum culture conversion were 65.2% (30/46) and 87.2% (41/47) for short-course and standard regimen group, respectively. There was no difference on two-month culture conversion rates, time to culture conversion, nor early bactericidal activity (P > 0.05). However, patients on short-course regimen were observed with lower rates of radiological improvement or recovery and sustained treatment success, which was mainly attributed to higher percent of patients permanently changed assigned regimen (32.1% vs. 12.3%, P = 0.012). The main cause for it was drug-induced hepatitis (16/17). Although lowering the dose of prothionamide was approved, the alternative option of changing assigned regimen was chosen in this study. While in per-protocol population, sputum culture conversion rates were 87.0% (20/23) and 94.4% (34/36) for the respective groups. Overall, the short-course regimen appeared to have inferior efficacy and higher incidence of hepatitis but desired efficacy in per-protocol population. It provides the first proof-of-concept in humans of the capacity of the short-course approach to identify drug regimens that can shorten the treatment time for tuberculosis.

12. Exploring Implied Certainty Equivalent Rates in Financial Markets: Empirical Analysis and Application to the Electric Vehicle Industry

Abstract

In this paper, we mainly study the impact of the implied certainty equivalent rate on investment in financial markets. First, we derived the mathematical expression of the implied certainty equivalent rate by using put-call parity, and then we selected some company stocks and options; we considered the best-performing and worst-performing company stocks and options from the beginning of 2023 to the present for empirical research. By visualizing the relationship between the time to maturity, moneyness, and implied certainty equivalent rate of these options, we have obtained a universal conclusion -- a positive implied certainty equivalent rate is more suitable for investment than a negative implied certainty equivalent rate, but for a positive implied certainty equivalent rate, a larger value also means a higher investment risk. Next, we applied these results to the electric vehicle industry, and by comparing several well-known US electric vehicle production companies, we further strengthened our conclusions. Finally, we give a warning concerning risk, that is, investment in the financial market should not focus solely on the implied certainty equivalent rate, because investment is not an easy task, and many factors need to be considered, including some factors that are difficult to predict with models.

13. The Implied Views of Bond Traders on the Spot Equity Market

Abstract

This study delves into the temporal dynamics within the equity market through the lens of bond traders. Recognizing that the riskless interest rate fluctuates over time, we leverage the Black-Derman-Toy model to trace its temporal evolution. To gain insights from a bond trader's perspective, we focus on a specific type of bond: the zero-coupon bond. This paper introduces a pricing algorithm for this bond and presents a formula that can be used to ascertain its real value. By crafting an equation that juxtaposes the theoretical value of a zero-coupon bond with its actual value, we can deduce the risk-neutral probability. It is noteworthy that the risk-neutral probability correlates with variables like the instantaneous mean return, instantaneous volatility, and inherent upturn probability in the equity market. Examining these relationships enables us to discern the temporal shifts in these parameters. Our findings suggest that the mean starts at a negative value, eventually plateauing at a consistent level. The volatility, on the other hand, initially has a minimal positive value, peaks swiftly, and then stabilizes. The success of deep learning requires high-quality annotated and massive data. However, the size and the quality of a dataset are usually a trade-off in practice, as data collection and cleaning are expensive and time-consuming. In real-world applications, especially those using crowdsourcing datasets, it is important to exclude noisy labels. Abstract

Visual question answering (VQA) is a challenging task to provide an accurate natural language answer given an image and a natural language question about the image. It involves multi-modal learning, i.e., computer vision (CV) and natural language processing (NLP), as well as flexible answer prediction for free-form and open-ended answers. Existing approaches often fail in cases that require reading and understanding text in images to answer questions. In practice, they cannot effectively handle the answer sequence derived from text tokens because the visual features are not text-oriented. To address the above issues, we propose a Text-Aware Dual Routing Network (TDR) which simultaneously handles the VQA cases with and without understanding text information in the input images. Specifically, we build a two-branch answer prediction network that contains a specific branch for each case and further develop a dual routing scheme to dynamically determine which branch should be chosen. In the branch that involves text understanding, we incorporate the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) features into the model to help understand the text in the images. Extensive experiments on the VQA v2.0 dataset demonstrate that our proposed TDR outperforms existing methods, especially on the ''number'' related VQA questions.

The sign-constrained Stiefel manifold in $\mathbb{R}^{n\times r}$ is a segment of the Stiefel manifold with fixed signs (nonnegative or nonpositive) for some columns of the matrices. It includes the nonnegative Stiefel manifold as a special case. We present global and local error bounds that provide an inequality with easily computable residual functions and explicit coefficients to bound the distance from matrices in $\mathbb{R}^{n\times r}$ to the sign-constrained Stiefel manifold. Abstract

We introduce Knowledge-Driven Program Synthesis (KDPS) as a variant of the program synthesis task that requires the agent to solve a sequence of program synthesis problems. In KDPS, the agent should use knowledge from the earlier problems to solve the later ones. We propose a novel method based on PushGP to solve the KDPS problem, which takes subprograms as knowledge. The proposed method extracts subprograms from the solution of previously solved problems by the Even Partitioning (EP) method and uses these subprograms to solve the upcoming programming task using Adaptive Replacement Mutation (ARM). We call this method PushGP+EP+ARM. With PushGP+EP+ARM, no human effort is required in the knowledge extraction and utilization processes. We compare the proposed method with PushGP, as well as a method using subprograms manually extracted by a human. Our PushGP+EP+ARM achieves better train error, success count, and faster convergence than PushGP. Abstract

The factors affecting the remaining oil recoverable potential in ultra-high water-cut reservoirs are extremely complex， exhibiting substantial variations in their impact. Conventional methods often rely on singular indicators such as remaining oil saturation or remaining oil abundance to assess remaining oil recoverable potential， which fails to guide tapping remaining oil in ultra-high water-cut reservoirs effectively. By considering the factors affecting the remaining oil recoverable potential in these reservoirs and comprehensively characterizing the heterogeneity of reservoirs， the scale of remaining oil reserves， watered conditions， and oil/water flow capacity， we constructed a quantitative assessment indicator system to tap the remaining oil recoverable potential in ultra-high water-cut reservoirs. In addition， according to the control degree difference of the indicators on remaining oil recoverable potential， we determined the objective weights of each evaluation indicator by combining the accelerated genetic algorithm and the projection pursuit model. We constructed the remaining oil recoverable potential index to form a new quantitative assessment method of the remaining oil recoverable potential in ultra-high water-cut reservoirs. Taking the NmIL sand body of the main production layer in the south area of Bohai Q Oilfield as an example， we quantitatively assessed the remaining oil recoverable potential in ultra-high water-cut reservoirs. The results reveal that the new method can comprehensively characterize the effects of reservoir physical properties， remaining oil reserves， and dynamic characteristics of oil/water flow on the remaining oil recoverable potential in different locations and realize the differential quantitative assessment of the distribution of remaining oil recoverable potential in NmIL sand body of the main production layer. In addition， the dominant recoverable potential area is clearly characterized， and it is taken as the potential area for the subsequent adjustment of infill wells in the NmIL sand body to accurately guide the deployment of infill horizontal wells， thereby offering a novel perspective for tapping remaining oil resources in such reservoirs.

Abstract

Distributed statistical learning has become a popular technique for large-scale data analysis. Most existing work in this area focuses on dividing the observations, but we propose a new algorithm, DDAC-SpAM, which divides the features under a high-dimensional sparse additive model. Our approach involves three steps: divide, decorrelate, and conquer. The decorrelation operation enables each local estimator to recover the sparsity pattern for each additive component without imposing strict constraints on the correlation structure among variables. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm are demonstrated through theoretical analysis and empirical results on both synthetic and real data. The theoretical results include both the consistent sparsity pattern recovery as well as statistical inference for each additive functional component. Abstract

Complex Knowledge Base Question Answering is a popular area of research in the past decade. Recent public datasets have led to encouraging results in this field, but are mostly limited to English and only involve a small number of question types and relations, hindering research in more realistic settings and in languages other than English. In addition, few state-of-the-art KBQA models are trained on Wikidata, one of the most popular real-world knowledge bases. We propose CLC-QuAD, the first large scale complex Chinese semantic parsing dataset over Wikidata to address these challenges. Together with the dataset, we present a text-to-SPARQL baseline model, which can effectively answer multi-type complex questions, such as factual questions, dual intent questions, boolean questions, and counting questions, with Wikidata as the background knowledge. Abstract

The catenary system, as a framework within railway electrification projects, constitutes an exposed suspension structure deployed along railway lines. It serves the purpose of providing electrical power to electric locomotives through pantographs but lacks backup facilities and falls into the category of a specialized form of high-voltage transmission line. To ensure the safety and reliability of the catenary system and the stable current collection of the pantograph, thereby safeguarding railway operational safety, it is imperative to research the aerodynamic response of the catenary system induced by environmental winds. For this study, the catenary system in the 4m windbreak wall section of the Lanzhou-Xinjiang high-speed railway bridge has been selected as the research subject. To determine wind speed correction coefficients at the supporting cable and contact wire locations, a finite element model was created using wind tunnel experiments and numerical simulations. Samples of wind speed fluctuation have been obtained using the harmonic synthesis method. Based on quasi-steady aerodynamic theory, a temporal analysis has been conducted on the aerodynamic response of supporting cables and contact wires under the influence of both average and fluctuating winds. Temporal results, such as lift at positive and negative positioning locations and mid-span displacement, have been extracted to assess whether the existing structure complies with regulatory requirements. This study offers valuable insights for engineering applications that are similar.

Abstract

Tyrosinase, an important oxidase involved in the primary immune response in humans, can sometimes become problematic as it can catalyze undesirable oxidation reactions. Therefore, for decades there has been a strong pharmaceutical interest in the discovery of novel inhibitors of this enzyme. Recent studies have also indicated that tyrosinase inhibitors can potentially be used in the treatment of melanoma cancer. Over the years, many new tyrosinase inhibitors have been discovered from various natural sources; however, marine natural products (MNPs) have contributed only a small number of promising candidates. Therefore, in this study we focused on the discovery of new MNP tyrosinase inhibitors of marine cyanobacterial and algal origins. A colorimetric tyrosinase inhibitory assay was used to screen over 4,500 marine extracts against mushroom tyrosinase (A. bisporus). Our results revealed that scytonemin monomer (ScyM), a pure compound from our compound library and also the monomeric last-step precursor in the biosynthesis of the well-known cyanobacterial sunscreen pigment scytonemin, consistently showed the highest tyrosinase inhibitory score. Determination of the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) further indicated that ScyM is more potent than the commonly used commercial inhibitor standard kojic acid (KA; IC50 of ScyM: 4.90 μM vs. IC50 of KA: 11.31 μM). After a scaled-up chemical synthesis of ScyM as well as its O-methyl analog (ScyM-OMe), we conducted a series of follow-up studies on their structures, inhibitory properties, and mode of inhibition. Our results supported ScyM as the second case ever of a novel tyrosinase inhibitory compound based on a marine cyanobacterial natural product. The excellent in vitro performance of ScyM makes it a promising candidate for applications such as a skin-whitening agent or an adjuvant therapy for melanoma cancer treatment.

Abstract

Co-culture is known as an efficient way to explore the metabolic potential of fungal strains for new antibiotics and other therapeutic agents that could counter emerging health issues. To study the effect of co-culture on the secondary metabolites and bioactivities of two marine strains, Aspergillus terreus C23-3 and Aspergillus. unguis DLEP2008001, they were co-cultured in live or inactivated forms successively or simultaneously. The mycelial morphology and high-performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) including bioautography of the fermentation extracts were recorded. Furthermore, the agar cup-plate method was used to compare the antimicrobial activity of the extracts. Based on the above, liquid chromatography-photodiode array-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-PDA-MS/MS) together with Global Natural Products Social molecular networking (GNPS) and multiple natural products database mining were used to further analyze their secondary metabolite variations. The comprehensive results showed the following trends: (1) The strain first inoculated will strongly inhibit the growth and metabolism of the latter inoculated one; (2) Autoclaved A. unguis exerted a strong inducing effect on later inoculated A. terreus, while the autoclaved A. terreus showed high stability of its metabolites and still potently suppressed the growth and metabolism of A. unguis; (3) When the two strains are inoculated simultaneously, they both grow and produce metabolites; however, the A. terreus seemed to be more strongly induced by live A. unguis and this inducing effect surpassed that of the autoclaved A. unguis. Under some of the conditions, the extracts showed higher antimicrobial activity than the axenic cultures. Totally, A. unguis was negative in response but potent in stimulating its rival while A. terreus had the opposite effect. Fifteen MS detectable and/or UV active peaks showed different yields in co-cultures vs. the corresponding axenic culture. GNPS analysis assisted by multiple natural products databases mining (PubChem, Dictionary of Natural Products, NPASS, etc.) gave reasonable annotations for some of these peaks, including antimicrobial compounds such as unguisin A, lovastatin, and nidulin. However, some of the peaks were correlated with antagonistic properties and remain as possible novel compounds without mass or UV matching hits from any database. It is intriguing that the two strains both synthesize chemical 'weapons' for antagonism, and that these are upregulated when needed in competitive co-culture environment. At the same time, compounds not useful in this antagonistic setting are downregulated in their expression. Some of the natural products produced during antagonism are unknown chlorinated metabolites and deserve further study for their antimicrobial properties. In summary, this study disclosed the different responses of two Aspergillus strains in co-culture, revealed their metabolic variation, and displayed new opportunities for antibiotic discovery.
