2. Some remarks on the discovery of Md-244

Abstract

In two recent papers by Pore et al. and Khuyagbaatar et al. discovery of the new isotope Md-244 was reported. The decay data, however, are conflicting. While Pore et al. report two isomeric states decaying by alpha emission with E(1)=8.66(2) MeV, T_1/2=0.4+0.4/-0.1s and E(2)=8.31(2) MeV, T_1/2 approx 6 s, Khuyagbaatar et al. report only a single transition with a broad energy distribution of E=(8.73-8.86) MeV and T_1/2=0.30/-0.09 s. The data published by Pore et al. very similar to those published for Md-245 (E=8.64(2), 8.68(2) MeV T_1/2=0.35+0.23/-0.16}$ s ). Therefore, we compare the data presented for Md-244 by Pore et al. with those reported for Md-245 by Ninov et al. and also by Khuyagbaatar et al.. We conclude that the data presented by Pore et al. shall be attributed to Md-245 with small contributions (one event each) from Fm-245 and probably Md-246.

Abstract

Products of the fusion-evaporation reaction Ca-48 + Am-243 were studied with the TASISpec set-up at the gas-filled separator TASCA at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum f\"ur Schwerionenforschung. Amongst the detected thirty correlated alpha-decay chains associated with the production of element Z=115, two recoil-alpha-fission and five recoil-alpha-alpha-fission events were observed. The latter are similar to four such events reported from experiments performed at the Dubna gas-filled separator. Contrary to their interpretation, we propose an alternative view, namely to assign eight of these eleven decay chains of recoil-alpha(-alpha)-fission type to start from the 3n-evaporation channel 115-288. The other three decay chains remain viable candidates for the 2n-evaporation channel 115-289., Comment: 15 pages. Article: 9 pages, 3 tables, 3 figures. Abstract

Quantum-mechanical shell effects are expected to strongly enhance nuclear binding on an "island of stability" of superheavy elements. The predicted center at proton number $Z=114,120$, or $126$ and neutron number $N=184$ has been substantiated by the recent synthesis of new elements up to $Z=118$. However the location of the center and the extension of the island of stability remain vague. High-precision mass spectrometry allows the direct measurement of nuclear binding energies and thus the determination of the strength of shell effects. Abstract

The masses of ten proton-rich nuclides, including the N=Z+1 nuclides 85-Mo and 87-Tc, were measured with the Penning trap mass spectrometer SHIPTRAP. Compared to the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2003 a systematic shift of the mass surface by up to 1.6 MeV is observed causing significant abundance changes of the ashes of astrophysical X-ray bursts. Surprisingly low alpha-separation energies for neutron-deficient Mo and Tc are found, making the formation of a ZrNb cycle in the rp process possible. Abstract

The masses of very neutron-deficient nuclides close to the astrophysical rp- and nu p-process paths have been determined with the Penning trap facilities JYFLTRAP at JYFL/Jyv\"askyl\"a and SHIPTRAP at GSI/Darmstadt. Isotopes from yttrium (Z = 39) to palladium (Z = 46) have been produced in heavy-ion fusion-evaporation reactions. In total 21 nuclides were studied and almost half of the mass values were experimentally determined for the first time: 88Tc, 90-92Ru, 92-94Rh, and 94,95Pd. For the 95Pdm, (21/2^+) high-spin state, a first direct mass determination was performed. Relative mass uncertainties of typically $\delta m / m = 5 \times 10^{-8}$ were obtained. The impact of the new mass values has been studied in nu p-process nucleosynthesis calculations. Abstract

First on-line mass measurements were performed at the SHIPTRAP Penning trap mass spectrometer. The masses of 18 neutron-deficient isotopes in the terbium-to-thulium region produced in fusion-evaporation reactions were determined with relative uncertainties of about $7\cdot 10^{-8}$, nine of them for the first time. Four nuclides ($^{144, 145}$Ho and $^{147, 148}$Tm) were found to be proton-unbound. The implication of the results on the location of the proton drip-line is discussed by analyzing the one-proton separation energies.

Abstract

Todate, its interaction with gold was investigated in two gas-solid chromatographyexperiments, which reported two different types of interaction, however, eachbased on the level of a few registered atoms only. Whereas noble-gas-likeproperties were suggested from the first experiment, the second one pointed ata volatile-metal-like character. Here, we present further experimental data onadsorption studies of Fl on silicon oxide and gold surfaces, accounting for theinhomogeneous nature of the surface, as it was used in the experiment andanalyzed as part of the reported studies. We confirm that Fl is highly volatile andthe least reactive member of group 14. Abstract

The decay of excited states in 255No was investigated by applying the evaporation-residue–conversion-electron correlation technique. Two new isomeric states were observed in 255No together with the previously known one. Excitation energies of the isomeric states were estimated based on the energies of conversion electrons and γ rays from correlation chains. These results were in accord with theoretical calculations based on the mean-field models. A tentative decay scheme of isomeric states in 255No is proposed, and their Nilsson configurations are discussed. The energy decrease of the 11/2−[725] Nilsson level for heavy N=153 isotones as a function of increasing proton number is confirmed. peerReviewed

Abstract

The electron-capture decay followed by a prompt fission process was searched for in the hitherto unknown most neutron-deficient Md isotope with mass number 244. Alpha decay with α-particle energies of 8.73-8.86 MeV and with a half-life of 0.30-0.09+0.19 s was assigned to Md244. No fission event with a similar half-life potentially originating from spontaneous fissioning of the short-lived electron-capture decay daughter Fm244 was observed, which results in an upper limit of 0.14 for the electron-capture branching of Md244. Two groups of fission events with half-lives of 0.9-0.3+0.6 ms and 5-2+3 ms were observed. The 0.9-0.3+0.6 ms activity was assigned to originate from the decay of Md245. The origin of eight fission events resulting in a half-life of 5-2+3 ms could not be unambiguously identified within the present data while the possible explanation has to invoke previously unseen physics cases.

Abstract

In two recent papers by Pore et al. and Khuyagbaatar et al., discovery of the new isotope Md244 was reported. The decay data, however, are conflicting. While Pore et al. report two isomeric states decaying by α emission with Eα(1)=8.66(2) MeV, T1/2(1)=0.4-0.1+0.4 s and Eα(2)=8.31(2) MeV, T1/2(2)≈6 s, Khuyagbaatar et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 142504 (2020).PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.125.142504] report only a single transition with a broad energy distribution of Eα=(8.73-8.86) MeV and T1/2=0.30-0.09+0.19 s. The data published in Pore et al. are very similar to those published for Md245m [Eα=8.64(2), 8.68(2) MeV, T1/2=0.35-0.16+0.23 s [V. Ninov, F. P. Heßberger, S. Hofmann, H. Folger, G. Münzenberg, P. Armbruster, A. V. Yeremin, A. G. Popeko, M. Leino, and S. Saro, Z. Phys. A 356, 11 (1996).ZPAHEX0939-792210.1007/s002180050141]]. Therefore, we compare the data presented for Md244 in Pore et al. with those reported for Md245 in Ninov et al. and also in Khuyagbaatar et al. We conclude that the data presented in Pore et al. shall be attributed to Md245 with small contributions (one event each) from Fm245 and probably Md246. peerReviewed
