Abstract The question of whether artificial intelligence (AI) can surpass human capabilities is crucial in the application of AI in clinical medicine. To explore this, an interpretable deep learning (DL) model was developed to assess myopia status using retinal refraction maps obtained with a novel peripheral refractor. The DL model demonstrated promising performance, achieving an AUC of 0.9074 (95% CI 0.83–0.97), an accuracy of 0.8140 (95% CI 0.70–0.93), a sensitivity of 0.7500 (95% CI 0.51–0.90), and a specificity of 0.8519 (95% CI 0.68–0.94). Grad-CAM analysis provided interpretable visualization of the attention of DL model and revealed that the DL model utilized information from the central retina, similar to human readers. Additionally, the model considered information from vertical regions across the central retina, which human readers had overlooked. This finding suggests that AI can indeed surpass human capabilities, bolstering our confidence in the use of AI in clinical practice, especially in new scenarios where prior human knowledge is limited.

As the "Roof of the world", the current state of crustal uplift on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau is a significant focus in Earth sciences due to its complex geodynamic environment and profound implications for regional and global climate, hydrology, and seismic activity. Understanding the mechanisms behind its uplift involves observing crustal movements and analyzing their dynamic processes in great detail. With the rapid development of satellite geodesy, observation technologies centered on the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) have demonstrated remarkable advantages and potential in the geodynamic studies of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. GNSS provides highly detailed three-dimensional measurements of crustal deformation, enabling precise tracking of horizontal and vertical movements. Meanwhile, GRACE offers comprehensive time-varying gravity data, which is crucial for understanding mass redistribution within the Earth's crust and mantle. Previous research has effectively combined these two datasets to study the intricate processes of crustal movements and solid mass migration on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. This integrated approach has yielded quantitative results of vertical crustal movement, allowing for a systematic evaluation of the current state of uplift. The combination of GNSS and GRACE data has enabled researchers to delve deeper into the mechanisms driving the uplift, providing insights into the interaction between tectonic forces and surface processes. Therefore, this paper aims to review the scientific progress made in studying plateau crustal uplift by integrating GNSS and GRACE data. It will cover various aspects such as the observation of the plateau's crustal displacement field and time-varying gravity field, the estimation of load deformation and the extraction of tectonic deformation, and the inversion of changes in crustal thickness and the depth of the Moho interface. These research findings offer a comprehensive understanding of the geodynamic processes. Furthermore, the paper will briefly discuss the environmental background and dynamic mechanisms underlying the current crustal uplift of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau.

Abstract Cigarette smoke contains a large number of chemicals, including both flavor components and harmful substances. The mainstream smoke (MSS) generated by smoking is directly inhaled by individuals, making it crucial to establish an effective method for smoke detection and analysis. One promising technique for analyzing smoke is MPT‐MS (Microwave plasma torch mass spectrometry). This approach offers several advantages in accurately detecting the composition of cigarette smoke. By combining MPT‐MS with a smoke pumping device, we can achieve real‐time online detection of smoke components. We successfully detected 22 flavor compounds present in the smoke. These compounds contribute to the distinct taste of cigarettes. Moreover, we identified 2 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the smoke. PAHs are known carcinogens and are of great concern in terms of their potential health risks. The successful detection and identification of flavor compounds and PAHs using our method confirm the online detection capability of MPT‐MS. This approach provides an efficient and reliable means for analyzing the complex composition of cigarette smoke. By utilizing MPT‐MS, we can gain valuable insights into the chemical composition of cigarette smoke and can inform the development of strategies and policies aimed at reducing the harmful effects of smoking and protecting public health.

Earthquake-induced gravity variation refers to changes in the earth’s gravity field associated with seismic activities. In recent years, development in the theories has greatly promoted seismic deformation research, laying a solid theoretical foundation for the interpretation and application of seismological gravity monitoring. Traditional terrestrial gravity measurements continue to play a significant role in studies of interseismic, co-seismic, and post-seismic gravity field variations. For instance, superconducting gravimeter networks can detect co-seismic gravity change at the sub-micro Gal level. At the same time, the successful launch of satellite gravity missions (e.g., the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment or GRACE) has also facilitated applied studies of the gravity variation associated with large earthquakes, and several remarkable breakthroughs have been achieved. The progress in gravity observation technologies (e.g., GRACE and superconducting gravimetry) and advances in the theories have jointly promoted seismic deformation studies and raised many new research topics. For example, superconducting gravimetry has played an important role in analyses of episodic tremor, slow-slip events, and interseismic strain patterns; the monitoring of transient gravity signals and related theories have provided a new perspective on earthquake early warning systems; the mass transport detected by the GRACE satellites several months before an earthquake has brought new insights into earthquake prediction methods; the use of artificial intelligence to automatically identify tiny gravity change signals is a new approach to accurate and rapid determination of earthquake magnitude and location. Overall, many significant breakthroughs have been made in recent years, in terms of the theory, application, and observation measures. This article summarizes the progress, with the aim of providing a reference for seismologists and geodetic researchers studying the phenomenon of gravity variation, advances in related theories and applications, and future research directions in this discipline.

BackgroundMycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) is a commonly occurring pathogen causing community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in children. The global prevalence of macrolide-resistant MP (MRMP) infection, especially in Asian regions, is increasing rapidly. However, the prevalence of MRMP and its clinical significance during the COVID-19 pandemic is not clear.MethodsThis study enrolled children with molecularly confirmed macrolide-susceptible MP (MSMP) and MRMP CAP from Beijing Children’s Hospital Baoding Hospital, Capital Medical University between August 2021 and July 2022. The clinical characteristics, laboratory findings, chest imaging presentations, and strain genotypes were compared between patients with MSMP and MRMP CAP.ResultsA total of 520 hospitalized children with MP-CAP were enrolled in the study, with a macrolide resistance rate of 92.7%. Patients with MRMP infection exhibited more severe clinical manifestations (such as dyspnea and pleural effusion) and had a longer hospital stay than the MSMP group. Despite coupling fractions being extensively used in the interseismic period, the coexistence of locking and creeping mechanisms and the correlation between the coupling fraction and locking depth remain poorly understood because of the lack of a physical model. To overcome these limitations, in this study, we propose a coupling fraction model for interpreting the motion of non-fully coupled strike-slip faults based on the classic two-dimensional strike-slip fault model and the superposition principle. The model was constructed using numerous tiny, alternating creeping and locking segments. The deformation produced by the model is the same as that of the classic two-dimensional strike-slip fault, except for the scale factor. The model and definition of the coupling fraction can be perfectly integrated. Based on the model, we put forward a varying decoupled fraction with depth model, which considers the depth-dependent coupling fraction. The two models provide deep insights into the deformation characteristics of quasi-arctangent curves produced by non-fully coupled strike-slip faults and the local and macroscopic characteristics of fault locking in the interseismic period.

Since Love (1911) studied the elastic deformation of an elastic self-gravitation sphere, many scientists have carried out in-depth research on seismic deformation problems in different viscoelastic Earth models, and mainly developed related theories based on semi-infinite space and spherical Earth model. The problem of seismic deformation is usually treated by integral transformation, basis function expansion, and other techniques, and is simplified to solve ordinary differential equations satisfying the boundary conditions at the source and on the Earth's surface. In view of this unique boundary value problem in mathematical physics, this paper summarizes various theoretical methods developed in recent decades in the form of full-analytical, semi-analytical and numerical integral solutions, and discusses the characteristics of various methods. In addition, the progress and problems of the 3-D Earth models are briefly reviewed. In a word, this paper summarizes the development history, research status, and latest progress of the deformation theory in viscoelastic Earth, in the past half-century, and discusses the existing problems and future development trend.

Based on Fully Convolutional Networks, recent salient object detection (SOD) methods achieve impressive results. Some studies improve the classical SOD frameworks by utilizing auxiliary information like fixation points, salient numbers and salient edges. These works adopt auxiliary information by embedding sub-networks into the main network. However, how to incorporate auxiliary information regardless of the specific structure with less coupling is unexplored in SOD. In this paper, we present DANet, a new Dynamic network to leverage arbitrary Auxiliary information for SOD. The proposed framework consists of 1) a Dynamic Weight Generator (DWG) which converts arbitrary auxiliary features into dynamic weights, 2) a Dynamic Bridge Block (DBB) which uses dynamic weight convolution to incorporate auxiliary information from DWG and then refines the fused features, and 3) a two-step training strategy to alleviate the side effect caused by drastic changes among different input images. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effect of different auxiliary information and the proposed framework is a universal method to improve SOD with auxiliary information. Comparison experiments show that DANet achieves state-of-the-art performance without any pre-processing and post-processing.

Abstract The bandwidth of a Δ Σ modulator is limited by the clock rate due to the oversampling ratio requirement. As the nanoscale CMOS processes are developing rapidly, it is possible to design wide bandwidth and high dynamic range continuous-time Δ Σ modulators for high-frequency applications. This paper proposes a 3rd-order 4-bit continuous-time Δ Σ modulator with a single-loop feedforward topology. This modulator is designed in a 40-nm CMOS process and achieves 80-dB dynamic range and a 100-MHz bandwidth at a clock rate of 2.4 GHz. The modulator consumes 69.7 mW from 1.2 V power supply.

The clinical treatment of degenerative and developmental lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is different. Computed tomography (CT) is helpful in distinguishing degenerative and developmental LSS due to its advantage in imaging osseous and calcified tissues. However, boundaries of the vertebral body, spinal canal and dural sac have low contrast and are hard to identify in a CT image, so the diagnosis depends heavily on the knowledge of expert surgeons and radiologists. In this paper, we develop an automatic lumbar spinal CT image segmentation method to assist LSS diagnosis. The main contributions of this paper are as follows: 1) a new lumbar spinal CT image dataset is constructed that contains 2393 axial CT images collected from 279 patients, with the ground truth of pixel-level segmentation labels; 2) a dual densely connected U-shaped neural network (DDU-Net) is used to segment the spinal canal, dural sac and vertebral body in an end-to-end manner; 3) DDU-Net is capable of segmenting tissues with large scale-variant, inconspicuous edges (e.g., spinal canal) and extremely small size (e.g., dural sac); and 4) DDU-Net is practical, requiring no image preprocessing such as contrast enhancement, registration and denoising, and the running time reaches 12 FPS. In the experiment, we achieved state-of-the-art performance on the lumbar spinal image segmentation task. We expect that the technique will increase both radiology workflow efficiency and the perceived value of radiology reports for referring clinicians and patients.

A large number of chemokines, cytokines, other trophic factors and the extracellular matrix molecules form a favorable microenvironment for peripheral nerve regeneration. This microenvironment is one of the major factors for regenerative success. Therefore, it is important to investigate the key molecules and regulators affecting nerve regeneration after peripheral nerve injury. However, the identities of specific cytokines at various time points after sciatic nerve injury have not been determined. The study was performed by transecting the sciatic nerve to establish a model of peripheral nerve injury and to analyze, by protein microarray, the expression of different cytokines in the distal nerve after injury. Results showed a large number of cytokines were up-regulated at different time points post injury and several cytokines, e.g., ciliary neurotrophic factor, were downregulated. The construction of a protein-protein interaction network was used to screen how the proteins interacted with differentially expressed cytokines. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway and Gene ontology analyses indicated that the differentially expressed cytokines were significantly associated with chemokine signaling pathways, Janus kinase/signal transducers and activators of transcription, phosphoinositide 3-kinase/protein kinase B, and notch signaling pathway. The cytokines involved in inflammation, immune response and cell chemotaxis were up-regulated initially and the cytokines involved in neuronal apoptotic processes, cell-cell adhesion, and cell proliferation were up-regulated at 28 days after injury. Western blot analysis showed that the expression and changes of hepatocyte growth factor, glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor and ciliary neurotrophic factor were consistent with the results of protein microarray analysis. The results provide a comprehensive understanding of changes in cytokine expression and changes in these cytokines and classical signaling pathways and biological functions during Wallerian degeneration, as well as a basis for potential treatments of peripheral nerve injury. Abstract Background The quality of the family environment—in particular, the kind of parenting children receive in their early years—plays a critical role in influencing children’s growth and development. To facilitate the development and delivery of appropriate parenting and family interventions for Chinese parents, this study explores the prevalence of the difficulties that may arise in the course of child-rearing, the associated sociodemographic factors and parents’ help-seeking behavior. Methods A cross-sectional self-reporting survey was conducted with a sample of 2229 parents of children between 6 and 35 months of age. Using a stratified random-digit design, parents from 15 Chinese cities were surveyed to determine their child-rearing difficulties, support-seeking behavior and their preferences for service delivery. The sociodemographic factors that influenced major child-rearing difficulties were analyzed using bivariate and logistic analyses. Results The majority (87.5%) of Chinese parents of children aged 6–35 months reported experiencing child-rearing difficulties. Nearly one third (31.5%) of parents reported experiencing major difficulties. Feeding and sleep problems were most often reported. Regression analysis revealed that major child-rearing difficulties most often involved male children (OR = 1.35, 95% CI 1.11–1.64), single-child households (OR = 1.38, 95% CI 1.07–1.77), and households with financial problems (OR = 1.40, 95% CI 1.06–1.85). Just over one third of parents (33.44%) sought professional support, while 21.37% had attended a parenting course in the past year. Prefer ways of sourcing parental support included professional online platform (69.24%), self-help books (43.70%), face-to-face consultation (24.99%), and attending lectures (36.57%). Conclusions Child-rearing difficulties are common among parents of children between 6 and 35 months of age in Chinese cities. The family with boys, single-child, financial problems, and father not joining in child-rearing may face the high risk to major child-rearing difficulties. The national initiative to provide more guidance and support for child-rearing difficulties is worthwhile, as is the development of online parenting programs.

Nerve conduits enhance nerve regeneration in the repair of long-distance peripheral nerve defects. To help optimize the effectiveness of nerve conduits for nerve repair, we developed a multi-step electrospinning process for constructing nerve guide conduits with aligned nanofibers. The alignment of the nerve guide conduits was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and fast Fourier transform. The mechanical performance of the nerve guide conduits was assessed by testing for tensile strength and compression resistance. The biological performance of the aligned fibers was examined using Schwann cells, PC12 cells and dorsal root ganglia in vitro. Immunohistochemistry was performed for the Schwann cell marker S100 and for the neurofilament protein NF200 in PC12 cells and dorsal root ganglia. In the in vivo experiment, a 1.5-cm defect model of the right sciatic nerve in adult female Sprague-Dawley rats was produced and bridged with an aligned nerve guide conduit. Hematoxylin-eosin staining and immunohistochemistry were used to observe the expression of ATF3 and cleaved caspase-3 in the regenerating matrix. The recovery of motor function was evaluated using the static sciatic nerve index. The number of myelinated fibers, axon diameter, fiber diameter, and myelin thickness in the distal nerve were observed by electron microscopy. Gastrocnemius muscle mass ratio was also determined. The analyses revealed that aligned nanofiber nerve guide conduits have good mechanical properties and can induce Schwann cells, PC12 cells and dorsal root ganglia to aggregate along the length of the nanofibers, and promote the growth of longer axons in the latter two (neuronal) cell types. The aligned fiber nerve conduits increased the expression of ATF3 and cleaved caspase-3 at the middle of the regenerative matrix and at the distal nerve segment, improved sciatic nerve function, increased muscle mass of the gastrocnemius muscle, and enhanced recovery of distal nerve ultrastructure. Collectively, the results show that highly aligned nanofibers improve the performance of the nerve conduit bridge, and enhance its effectiveness in repairing peripheral nerve defects.

Abstract Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a refractory disease that is associated with collapse of the femoral head, with a risk of hip arthroplasty in younger populations. Thus, there has been an increased focus on early interventions for ONFH that aim to preserve the native articulation. Stem cell therapy is a promising treatment, and an increasing number of recent studies have focused on this topic. Many clinical studies have reported positive outcomes of stem cell therapy for the treatment of ONFH. To improve the therapeutic effects of this approach, many related basic research studies have also been performed. However, some issues must be further explored, such as the appropriate patient selection procedure, the optimal stem cell selection protocol, the ideal injection number, and the safety of stem cell therapy. The purpose of this review is to summarize the available clinical studies and basic research related to stem cell therapy for ONFH.

Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) is important for the pathological process of heatstroke (HS), although little is known regarding the main source of the IL-1β produced during the early stage of HS. In this study, heat stress led splenic lymphocytes to death with generation of inflammatory cytokines. The same phenomenon also occurs in animal models of heatshock. We observed that the death of splenic lymphocytes was identified to be pyroptosis. In addition, splenic lymphocyte pyroptosis can be induced by hyperpyrexia in a time- and temperature-dependent manner with NLR pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation. An NLRP3 inhibitor (MCC950) and a caspase-1 inhibitor (ac-YVAD-cmk) were used to confirm the role of the NLRP3/caspase-1 pathway in pyroptosis. With heat stress, levels of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) in splenic lymphocytes would significantly increase. Accordingly, the use of mtROS scavenger (Mito-TEMPO) could reduce the occurrence of pyroptosis and the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome in vitro. In animal models of heatshock, Mito-TEMPO can inhibit activation of the NLRP3/caspase-1 pathway. Taken together, our data suggest that activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome mediates hyperpyrexia-induced pyroptosis in splenic lymphocytes. Perhaps one of the important initiators of pyroptosis is mtROS. Our data have elucidated a new molecular mechanism of IL-1β overexpression in the early stage of HS, providing a new strategy for IL-1β-targeted therapy in future clinical treatments for HS.

Abstract Faced with the increasingly serious energy and environmental crisis in the world nowadays, the development of renewable energy has attracted increasingly more attention of all countries. Solar energy as an abundant and cheap energy is one of the most promising renewable energy sources. While high-performance solar cells have been well developed in the last couple of decades, the high module cost largely hinders wide deployment of photovoltaic devices. In the last 10 years, this urgent demand for cost-effective solar cells greatly facilitates the research of solar cells. This paper reviews the recent development of cost-effective and high-efficient solar cell technologies. This report paper covers low-cost and high-efficiency perovskite solar cells. The development and the state-of-the-art results of perovskite solar cell technologies are also introduced.

The lateral septal nucleus (LS) plays a critical role in emotionality, social behavior and feeding processes, through neural connections with the hippocampus and hypothalamus. We investigated the neural circuits of LS by using herpes simplex virus 1 strain H129 (H129) and pseudorabies virus stain Bartha (PRV). Virus H129 indicates that LS directly projects to some cerebral nuclei (nucleus accumbens, bed nuclei of the stria terminalis and amygdala), part of the hypothalamus (median preoptic, paraventricular, dorsomedial nucleus and lateral area), thalamus (medial habenula, the paraventricular, parataenial and reuniens nuclei, and the medial line nuclei) and the pontine central gray. Then the LS has secondary projections to the CA3 and CA1 field of the hippocampal formation, lateral and medial preoptic area, and the mammillary body. PRV tracing shows that LS are mainly receiving primary inputs from the amygdala, hippocampus, hypothalamic, thalamus, midbrain and hindbrain, and secondary inputs from dorsal and central linear nucleus raphe, the lateral part of the superior central nucleus raphe, the ventral anterior-lateral complex, the intermediodorsal nucleus, the central medial nucleus, the rhomboid nucleus, and the submedial nucleus of the thalamus. The neural circuit data revealed here could help to understand and further research on the function of LS.

The objectives of this longitudinal study were to examine the trajectory of breastfed infants' growth in China to update growth standards for early childhood, and to compare these updated Chinese growth standards with the growth standards recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2006.This longitudinal cohort study enrolled 1,840 healthy breastfed infants living in an "optimal" environment favorable to growth and followed up until one year of age from 2007 to 2010. The study subjects were recruited from 60 communities in twelve cities in China. A participating infant's birth weight was measured within the first hour of the infant's life, and birth length and head circumference within 24 hours after birth. Repeated weekly and monthly anthropometric measurements were also taken. Multilevel (ML) modelling via MLwiN2.25 was fitted to estimate the growth curves of weight-for-age (WFA), length-for-age (LFA), and head circumference-for-age (HFA) for the study sample as a whole and by child sex, controlling for mode of delivery, the gravidity and parity of the mother, infant's physical measurements at birth, infant's daily food intaking frequency per day, infant's medical conditions, the season when the infant's physical measurement was taken, parents' ages, heights, and attained education, and family structure and income per month. During the first four weeks after birth, breastfed infants showed an increase in weight, length, and head circumference of 1110g, 4.9 cm, and 3.2 cm, respectively, among boys, and 980 g, 4.4 cm, and 2.8 cm, respectively, among girls. Throughout infancy, the total growth for these three was 6930 g, 26.4 cm, and 12.5 cm, respectively, among boys, and 6480 g, 25.5 cm, and 11.7 cm, respectively, among girls. As expected, there was a significant sex difference in growth during the first year. In comparison with the WHO growth standards, breastfed children in our study were heavier in weight, longer in length, and bigger in head circumference, with the exception of a few age points during the first two to four months on the upper two percentile curves.Our data suggested the growth curves for breastfed infants in China were significantly different in comparison with those based on the WHO standards. The adoption of the WHO infant growth standards among Chinese infants, as well as the methods used in the development of such growth standards in China, need careful and coordinated consideration.
