The size of the human head is highly heritable, but genetic drivers of its variation within the general population remain unmapped. We perform a genome-wide association study on head size (N = 80,890) and identify 67 genetic loci, of which 50 are novel. Neuroimaging studies show that 17 variants affect specific brain areas, but most have widespread effects. Gene set enrichment is observed for various cancers and the p53, Wnt, and ErbB signaling pathways. Genes harboring lead variants are enriched for macrocephaly syndrome genes (37-fold) and high-fidelity cancer genes (9-fold), which is not seen for human height variants. Head size variants are also near genes preferentially expressed in intermediate progenitor cells, neural cells linked to evolutionary brain expansion. Our results indicate that genes regulating early brain and cranial growth incline to neoplasia later in life, irrespective of height. This warrants investigation of clinical implications of the link between head size and cancer.

Background: The use of larger femoral heads in total hip replacement (THR) has increased over the last decade. While the relationship between increasing head size and increased stability is well known, the risk of revision with increasing head size remains poorly understood. The aim of this study was to compare the outcome of total hip joint replacement with 32-mm and 36-mm heads. Methods: We carried out a 20-year retrospective analysis of prospective data from the New Zealand Joint Registry (NZJR). All primary total hip replacements registered between January 1999 and December 2018 were included. We compared the rate of revision of 32-mm and 36-mm heads in THR. Sub-group analysis included comparisons of bearing type and all-cause revision. Results: 60,051 primary THRs met our inclusion criteria. The revision rate per 100 component years was significantly higher with a 36-mm head than with a 32-mm head (0.649 vs. 0.534, p < 0.001). Subgroup analysis of bearing type showed no significant differences in revision rates for all combinations of 36-mm heads when compared to 32-mm (p = 0.074–0.92), with the exception of metal-on-metal (MoM); p = 0.038. When MoM was removed there was no significant difference in revision rates per 100 component years between 32-mm and 36-mm heads, 0.528 versus 0.578 (p = 0.099). In this study, the concrete cone capacity, concrete cone angle, and load–displacement response of cast-in headed anchors in geopolymer concrete are explored using numerical analyses. The concrete damaged plasticity (CDP) model in ABAQUS is used to simulate the behavior of concrete substrates. The tensile behavior of anchors in geopolymer concrete is compared with that in normal concrete as well as that predicted by the linear fracture mechanics (LFM) and concrete capacity design (CCD) models. The results show that the capacity of the anchors in geopolymer concrete is 30%–40% lower than that in normal concrete. The results also indicate that the CCD model overestimates the capacity of the anchors in geopolymer concrete, whereas the LFM model provides a much more conservative prediction. The extent of the difference between the predictions by the numerical analysis and those of the above prediction models depends on the effective embedment depth of the anchor and the anchor head size. The influence of concrete surface cracking on the capacity of the anchor is shown to depend on the location of the crack and the effective embedment depth. Headed cast-in specialty inserts are often developed and employed for their improved constructability and time-saving benefits over traditional cast-in and post-installed anchors. Their acceptance criteria (AC 446) were established by The International Code Council Evaluation Service. However, previous research on the behavioral characteristics of headed specialty inserts is rare. This study investigates the performance of a newly developed insert anchor for use as an earthquake-resistant anchor for fire protection systems and suspended lightweight piping. Firstly, three cyclic tension tests of the specialty insert with a threaded rod were conducted in accordance with AC 446. These tests resulted in all experimental subjects achieving the target strength without defects. Subsequently, monotonic tension and shear tests of the insert anchor in cracked concrete were performed five times each to assess the tensile and shear capacities of the new insert anchor. The results were compared with the nominal strength determined by the anchor design equation provided by the ACI 318 for cast-in headed anchors, finding that the latter adequately approximates the concrete breakout strength of the new insert anchor in tension but underestimates the concrete pryout strength in shear. Based on the measured breakout failure surface angles, a projected area of the failure cone of the corresponding anchor with a relatively large head size is proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the paper was to study the potential correlation between school students' head size and academic performance. As the material, the head length and breadth measurement data of 5034 7-18-year-old ethnic Estonian school students measured by Prof. J. Aul in 1966-1969 were used. To get an overview of head size and the development of its growth, head module A was used. The correlation between head size and school students' academic performance was studied using the data of 4840 school students aged 8-18 years (2406 boys and 2434 girls). Academic performance was assessed based on school students' grades in a three-point system: I - low, II - medium, III - good academic performance. As a result, head module A was found to increase relatively evenly and relatively modestly in Tallinn school students during their school years (7% in boys and 4.5% in girls), while boys' heads were larger than girls'. Relative head module A decreased in school students with age in both boys and girls. Until the age of 14 years, relative value of head module A is greater in boys than in girls; from the age of 16 years, however, the relative value of head module A becomes greater in girls than boys. A significant correlation between academic performance and head size was found in both boys and girls. The greatest differences in head size were between students with low and good academic performance. Head module A of the latter was essentially greater. Introduction: Objectives were to analyze changes in fetal cephalic biometry and fetoplacental circulation throughout pregnancy in fetuses with congenital heart defects. Material and methods: Prospective study conducted on three university tertiary referral hospitals. Fetuses with the diagnosis of isolated congenital heart defects attending between 2014 and 2018 were included. Congenital heart defects were divided into two groups according to the oxygen supply to the central nervous system: group I (expected low placental blood content and low oxygen delivery to the brain) and group II (expected intermediate and high placental blood content). Fetal biometry and Doppler parameters were collected between 25–30 weeks of gestation and 34–40 weeks of gestation and transformed into Z scores. The results were compared with healthy controls. Finally, general linear modeling was performed to analyze repeated measurements. Results: In all, 71 fetuses met the inclusion criteria. Fetuses with congenital heart defects had significantly smaller head (biparietal diameter [p < 0.001], head circumference [p = 0.001]) and abdominal circumference (p < 0.001), and lower estimated fetal weight (p < 0.001) than controls. When analyzing according to congenital heart defects type, head size was significantly smaller in group I compared with group II (p = 0.04). Regarding Doppler parameters, fetuses with congenital heart defects showed higher umbilical artery pulsatility index (p < 0.001) and lower cerebroplacental ratio (p = 0.044) than controls. In group I, umbilical artery pulsatility index was above the 95th centile in 15.4% of fetuses compared with 6.7% in group II and 1.9% in controls (p < 0.001); moreover, middle cerebral artery pulsatility index was below the 5th centile in 5.4% of group I fetuses compared with 0% in group II and 1.2% in controls (p = 0.011). General linear model for two measurements showed significant longitudinal changes in biometric parameters. Growth rate of fetal head through pregnancy (head circumference Z score) was lower in fetuses with congenital heart defects compared with controls (p = 0.043). In group I, the head circumference Z score longitudinal decrease was significantly higher than in group II (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Fetuses with congenital heart defects are at risk of smaller head size and Doppler changes. Growth rate of fetal head throughout pregnancy is also affected. Annually, Americans consume an average of 24.5 lb of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) per capita, more than half of which is head lettuce. This study examined the impacts of using black and white-on-black polyethylene mulches on three crisphead lettuce cultivars for spring production in the open field, with data collected on the soil temperature and lettuce yields. Black polyethylene, white-on-black polyethylene, and bare ground were compared for effects on soil temperature, lettuce yields, and lettuce head height and diameter. Mean soil temperatures at a 5 cm depth were 18.9 °C under black polyethylene, 17.7 °C under white-on-black polyethylene, and 17.1 °C in bare ground plots. Changes in the lettuce canopy size presented a similar trend over the growing season in all treatments. Both mulch type and cultivar significantly (P < 0.01) affected the canopy growth in head lettuce. Lettuce on black polyethylene mulch grew significantly (P < 0.01) faster than lettuce on white-on-black polyethylene or bare ground. However, the black and white-on-black mulches produced similar yields, averaging 5.76 and 5.71 kg·mˉ2, respectively. Meanwhile, bare ground plot yields were significantly (P < 0.01) lower at 4.57 kg·mˉ2. Cultivar rank order was consistent across treatments, and Crispino and Garmsir at 5.82 and 5.47 kg·mˉ2 fresh weight had significantly higher yields than Nevada at 4.75 kg·mˉ2 (P < 0.01).

The expression big headed is often used to describe narcissists, however is it possible that this term signals a bias in how narcissists perceive themselves? We tested whether narcissistic traits predicted biases in the estimated size and weight of specific body parts, including head circumference and brain weight. In two questionnaire-based studies, participants estimated the size or weight of parts of their body. In Study 1 (n = 316), we found that the Leadership/Authority facet of narcissism significantly predicted greater estimates of head circumference in men, but lower estimates of head circumference in women. In Study 2 (n = 275), we found that when a sex-specific average head circumference was not provided, Leadership/Authority predicted greater estimates of head circumference overall. We present evidence that narcissism predicts biases in estimated head size and brain weight, but that the precise nature of these biases is dependent on the provided frame of reference for body size. These results are discussed with reference to within-sex competitive strategies, perceived intelligence and stereotypes for male and female attractiveness.

Brain size is a key factor determining the performance and fitness of an organism; birds with relatively larger brains might have advantages in the utilization of resources and dispersal. Bite force is another important indicator of fitness, and plays an essential role in intra- and inter-specific competition. In this study, a comparative analysis was conducted on the head size and bite force of the two sister species, the white-rumped munia (Lonchura striata) and scaly-breasted munia (L. punctulata) that differ in distribution range. The results showed that the scaly-breasted munia, which has a wider distribution range, had a significantly larger head size than that of the white-rumped munia. In addition, scaly-breasted munias had a greater bite force; however, the difference was not significant. One possible explanation could be that the smaller head to body ratio in scaly-breasted munias reduced their bite-force slightly. Further, this finding could be attributed to the fact that similar food resources and foraging habitats of the two species lead to a similar bite force. Our study supported the argument that head size, rather than bite force, plays a more important role in the dispersal and evolutionary adaptation of birds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Behavior and decision–making depend on cognitive abilities and ultimately brain size and structure. I hypothesized that personality may be related to relative brain size adjusted for body size, and therefore, that selection acts against individuals that have small brains for their body size. I investigated standard personality scores in great tits Parus major from the field in relation to head volume, sex, age, capture date, and body size. Head volume and brain mass were strongly positively correlated, allowing for non–destructive estimation of brain size based on head volume. Personality score was positively correlated with head volume andwas higher in individuals captured later in the season. In an analysis of head volume in relation to sex, age, date of capture and body size, males had larger heads than females and older individuals had larger heads than yearlings. Head volume was larger in individuals captured later during the season. These findings are consistent with the prediction that personality is related to relative brain size and that selection acts on personality and relative head size as reflected by changes over time and between age classes.

Introduction: Recent advances in polyethylene and ceramic technologies has allowed us to use larger sized heads without compromising the wear properties of a total hip arthroplasty (THA). 1 benefit of this change has been proposed to be a lower incidence of dislocation. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the dislocation rate in 913 THAs performed using the same standardised surgical technique employed by a single team of surgeons at our institution between 1995 and 2015. Patients were assigned to 2 groups: small (⩽28 mm), large diameter heads (⩾36 mm and larger). The cup position was measured and plotted to determine its status according to the Lewinnek's safe zone (15° ± 10° for anteversion, 40° ± 10° for inclination). Results: 16 of the 472 small heads dislocated (3.4%) while 5 of the 441 in large head group (1.1%) (p = 0.04). In all of the large head patients that dislocated the cup position was in the safe range of Lewinnek. However, in the large head group only 64.5% of the cups were in the safe zone. Conclusions: By changing the head size to 36 mm, we were able to decrease the dislocation rate significantly. Errors of cup positioning according to Lewinnek became oblivious when using large heads. Personality differences may coexist because of their different benefits or, alternatively, because some personality types result from limitations of low individual quality while others require high physical or cognitive abilities. Recent work in a great tit, Parus major , population found that proactive personality is associated with larger head sizes, suggesting that it requires better cognitive abilities. This was never tested in other avian species, and other morphological correlates of personality have also seldom been studied. We used an open-field and a mirror test as proxies to assess personality differences in a large sample of wild common waxbills, Estrilda astrild , and tested whether behavioural differences are predicted by morphological traits that can relate to genetic quality or early life growth (body size), brain volume (head size), growth during moult (wing and tail length) or body condition (size-corrected mass). Exploration in open-field tests was related to size-corrected mass and to wing and tail size, perhaps because birds in better condition or with larger wings can move more or faster. These associations were very weak, with effects sizes close to zero, and, importantly, morphology did not predict behaviour in mirror tests. In waxbills, behaviour in mirror tests correlates with exploration in open-field tests, and provides a better assay of reactive-to-proactive personalities because it is repeatable in the long term. Our results thus indicate that avian personality can be independent of differences in quality between individuals. • Common waxbills have stable reactive or proactive personalities. • We tested whether personality is predicted by various morphological differences. • Some morphological differences may reflect aspects of quality. • Correlations between behaviour and morphology were very weak. • Personality is thus not predicted by morphological differences between individuals. Purpose: Accurately predicting implant size for hemiarthroplasties offers an important contribution to theatre efficiency and patients' intraoperative care. However, pre-operative sizing using templating of implants in hip fracture patients requiring a hemiarthroplasty is often difficult due to non-standard radiographs, absence of a calibration marker, poor marker placement, variable patient position, and in many institutions a lack of templating facilities. In patients who have previously undergone a hemiarthroplasty on the contralateral side, surgeons can use the contralateral implant size for pre-operative planning purposes. However, the accuracy of doing this has not previously been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the reliability of using an in situ contralateral implant as a predictor of implant size on the contralateral side. Methods: A retrospective review of our local neck of femur fracture (NOF) database was undertaken to identify patients who had bilateral hip hemiarthroplasty. Operative records were reviewed to establish the size of prostheses used at operation. Correlation, agreement, and reliability analysis were performed using the least squares, Bland–Altman plot, and intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) methods, respectively. Results: Operative records were identified for 45 patients who had bilateral hemiarthroplasties. There was a difference in implant size used in 58% of cases. Of these 77% required a larger implant on the right. Implant sizes were within 1 mm of the contralateral side in 78% and within 2 mm in 91% of patients. However, in 9% of patients, there was a discrepancy greater than 2 mm with some cases having up to 6 mm discrepancy. Correlation coefficient was 0.83 and the ICC 0.90. Conclusions: The findings in this study indicated that using the size of a contralateral implant can be used as a reliable indicator of head size in cases of bilateral hemiarthroplasty. However, the surgeon should remain cautious as there is a one in ten chance of there being a 3 mm or more difference in implant size. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Neurodevelopmental delay is frequently encountered in children with a congenital heart defect (CHD). Fetuses with major CHD have a smaller head circumference (HC), irrespective of altered cerebral flow or brain oxygenation. This cohort study compared head growth in cases with isolated vs those with non-isolated CHD to evaluate the effect of additional pathology on head size in these fetuses.Method: All CHD cases diagnosed prenatally in the period January 2002-July 2014 were selected from our regional registry, PRECOR. Cases of multiple pregnancy, and those affected by maternal diabetes, severe fetal structural brain anomalies or functional CHD were excluded. Subjects were divided into groups according to whether the CHD was isolated, and the non-isolated group was subdivided into three groups: cases with genetic anomaly, extracardiac malformation or placental pathology. In both isolated and non-isolated CHD groups, CHDs were also grouped according to their potential effect on aortic flow and oxygen saturation. Mean HC Z-scores at 20 weeks and increase or decrease (Δ) of HC Z-scores over the course of pregnancy were compared between isolated and non-isolated groups, using mixed linear regression models.Results: Included were 916 cases of CHD diagnosed prenatally, of which 378 (41.3%) were non-isolated (37 with placental pathology, 217 with genetic anomaly and 124 with extracardiac malformation). At 20 weeks, non-isolated cases had significantly lower HC Z-scores than did isolated cases (Z-score = -0.70 vs -0.03; P < 0.001) and head growth over the course of pregnancy showed a larger decrease in this group (Δ HC Z-score = -0.03 vs -0.01 per week; P = 0.01). Cases with placental pathology had the lowest HC Z-score at 20 weeks (Z-score = -1.29) and the largest decrease in head growth (Δ HC Z-score = -0.06 per week). In CHD subjects with a genetic diagnosis (Z-score = -0.73; Δ HC Z-score = -0.04 per week) and in those with an extracardiac malformation (Z-score = -0.49; Δ HC Z-score = -0.02 per week), HC Z-scores were also lower compared with those in subjects with isolated CHD. CHDs that result in low oxygenation or flow to the brain were present more frequently in isolated than in non-isolated cases.Conclusions: Smaller HC in fetuses with CHD appears to be associated strongly with additional pathology. Placental pathology and genetic anomaly in particular seem to be important contributors to restricted head growth. This effect appears to be irrespective of altered hemodynamics caused by the CHD. Previously reported smaller HC in CHD should, in our opinion, be attributed to additional pathology. Neurodevelopment studies in infants with CHD should, therefore, always differentiate between isolated and non-isolated cases. © 2019 The Authors. Evolutionary biologists have long focused on the patterns and causes of sexual size dimorphism (SSD). While female-biased SSD is common among ectotherms, a few lineages predominately exhibit male-biased SSD. One example is the clade of desmognathans, a monophyletic group of two genera within the Plethodontinae of the lungless salamander family Plethodontidae. Members of these two genera have a unique pattern of SSD: males mature earlier and at smaller sizes than females but reach greater maximum sizes. We used comparative phylogenetic methods to test whether SSD in these salamanders is the result of sexual selection on males. Spatial evolutionary and ecological vicariance analysis indicated a significant divergence in SSD associated with the phylogenetic origin of the desmognathans. Phylogenetic least-squares regression across the two most speciose genera of the subfamily determined a significant relationship between SSD and adult sex ratio. While male desmognathans are not sexually dimorphic in head size, they have a unique head morphology that causes their heads to grow more rapidly as their body size increases as compared with the heads of other salamanders. This pattern of allometric growth combines with a powerful bite force and enlarged premaxillary teeth to create formidable weaponry that probably is more responsive to sexual selection. • The influence of head size on auditory brainstem response (ABR) has not been systematically studied particularly at low stimulation levels. • ABR was studied in males and females with comparable head sizes at supra-threshold and threshold levels. • Differences in ABR results between genders were only noted at supra-threshold level, which was not related to head size. Gender disparities in auditory brainstem response (ABR) results have been reported but the exact reasons remain controversial. Difference in head size between genders has been suggested but the literature is lacking, particularly at threshold levels. In this short communication, we compared ABR results between males and females with comparable head sizes at supra-threshold and threshold levels. In this comparative study, of 58 healthy young adults, 30 of them (17 females and 13 males) with comparable head sizes underwent the standard ABR testing. Wave V latencies and ABR thresholds were determined and analyzed accordingly. At the supra-threshold level, significantly shorter wave V latencies were found in females than in males (p = 0.029). This difference was substantive (d = 0.86) and persisted even when the head size was included in the analysis (p = 0.032). In contrast, no significant differences in ABR thresholds were found between genders (p > 0.05). Significant gender differences in ABR results among young adults were only found at the supra-threshold level, which were not related to the head size. Based on the study outcomes, gender-specific normative data for ABR are still beneficial for clinical applications, particularly when recording ABR at high stimulation levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Investigating dietary resource utilization and head morphology of gape-limited predators can provide a basis for understanding interspecific competition and species coexistence. For sympatric species, convergence of head morphology can indicate similar prey or foraging strategies while divergence can suggest competition, resource partitioning or expansion into new habitats. Sexual dimorphism can further complicate the head morphology-diet relationship by potentially reducing intraspecific competition. To understand the relationship between head morphology and diet, we studied three sympatric species, the plain-bellied (Nerodia erythrogaster), diamondback (N. rhombifer), and northern (N. sipedon) watersnakes in western Kentucky. All three species inhabit similar wetlands and feed on amphibians and fishes. The anurophagous plain-bellied watersnakes had longer, narrower heads that likely allow snakes to capture anuran metamorphs and froglets while facilitating movement through dense vegetation. The piscivorous diamondback watersnake had a wider head, which would enhance contact with prey in this open-mouth forager, and smaller interocular distance, resulting in dorsally placed eyes that facilitate seeing fish prey from below. The mostly piscivorous northern watersnake had an intermediate, generalized head shape, which may reflect the typically wide diet range of this species. Head shape did not differ between snake sexes but diamondback and northern females had larger heads than males and fed more frequently on fishes. Background: Total hip arthroplasty is performed with modular parts. Either a metal or ceramic ball is fastened to the trunnion of a femoral stem via a Morse taper. This implant scenario has been successful. However, recently larger (36 mm or greater) metal heads have become more popular as a means to reduce the incidence of hip joint dislocation. Today, a number of clinical failures have occurred due to mechanically assisted crevice corrosion at the head (taper) stem (trunnion) interface necessitating revision surgery. The objective of this research is to investigate how trunnion stress varies with head size, and how taper-trunnion geometric parameters including horizontal lever arm (HLA), taper engagement level, and a new parameter called trunnion load offset affect trunnion stresses. We hypothesized that trunnion stress may increase with increasing head size and HLA.Methods: This hypothesis was tested by conducting finite element analysis of a titanium hip stem and 4 commercially available cobalt-chromium femoral heads subjected to 4 different moderate to severe physiological loading conditions.Results: Results showed that trunnion stress increases with increasing head size, increased HLA, and trunnion load offset. It was also found that under certain load cases the trunnion stresses get exceptionally high, especially for the larger head sizes.Conclusion: This study suggests trying to avoid larger femoral head sizes that may result in higher implant stresses under certain loading conditions. Skull morphology is fundamental to evolution and the biological adaptation of species to their environments. With aquaculture fish species, head size is also important for economic reasons because it has a direct impact on fillet yield. However, little is known about the underlying genetic basis of head size. Catfish is the primary aquaculture species in the United States. In this study, we performed a genome-wide association study using the catfish 250K SNP array with backcross hybrid catfish to map the QTL for head size (head length, head width, and head depth). One significantly associated region on linkage group (LG) 7 was identified for head length. In addition, LGs 7, 9, and 16 contain suggestively associated regions for head length. For head width, significantly associated regions were found on LG9, and additional suggestively associated regions were identified on LGs 5 and 7. No region was found associated with head depth. Head size genetic loci were mapped in catfish to genomic regions with candidate genes involved in bone development. Comparative analysis indicated that homologs of several candidate genes are also involved in skull morphology in various other species ranging from amphibian to mammalian species, suggesting possible evolutionary conservation of those genes in the control of skull morphologies.

En Abstract Context Age, hearing loss, sex, BMI, and head size are very important parameters that influence auditory evoked potential (AEP) variables. Although the correlation of BMI and head size with AEP parameters has been studied recently, there is no common consensus on it. A few studies show a positive correlation, whereas others report a weaker correlation. Further, normative values of the V/I ratio also show a wide range of normative values from different studies. Aims and objectives This study aimed to evaluate the association of AEP variables with BMI and head size in healthy young male participants and to collect normative data for the V/I amplitude ratio. Materials and methods This is a cross-sectional study in which 30 young healthy male participants with age range 19–25 years and BMI range 15–26 kg/m2 underwent AEP testing. All were screened for inclusion and exclusion criteria established for the study. Informed consent was obtained and the data obtained were stored in an Excel sheet. A simple correlation regression coefficient was obtained between physical parameters and different AEP variables. Results We observed a strong positive correlation between head size and V wave latency (r = 0.5) and a weaker positive correlation between head size and AEP interpeak latencies (IPLs) I–V and III–V (r = 0.3). No correlation was observed between BMI and AEP variables. The V/I amplitude ratio was 0.98 ± 0.68 and 0.93 ± 0.7 for the left and the right ear, respectively. Conclusion We concluded that BMI had no influence, and head size showed an association with AEP outcome, especially V wave latency and the AEP-IPL difference. The V/I ratio needs to be examined further in studies with larger sample sizes as values were different from those of previous studies.

Head size is important economic trait for many aquaculture fish which is directly linked to their carcass yield. The genetic basis of head size trait remains unclear in many widely cultured fish species. Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) is one of the most widely studied fish due to its importance on both economic and environmental aspects. In this study, we performed genome-wide association study using 433 Yellow River carp individuals from multiple families to identify loci and genes potentially associated with head size related traits including head length (HL), head length/body length ratio (HBR), eye diameter (ED), and eye cross (EC). QTL mapping was utilized to filter the effects of population stratification and improve power for the candidates identification in the largest surveyed family with a published genetic linkage map. Twelve SNPs showed significant for head size traits in GWAS and 18 QTLs were identified in QTL mapping. Our study combining both GWAS and QTL mapping could compensate the deficiency from each other and advance our understanding of head size traits in common carp. To acquire a better understanding of the correlation between head size and body growth, we also performed comparisons between QTLs of head size traits and growth-related traits. Candidate genes underlying head size traits were identified surrounding the significant SNPs, including parvalbumin, srpk2, fsrp5, igf1, igf3, grb10, igf1r, notch2, sfrp2. Many of these genes have been identified with potential functions on bone formation and growth. Igf1 was a putative gene associated with both head size and body growth in Yellow River carp. The teleost-specific igf3 was a candidate head size related gene, related to both HL and HBR. Our study also indicated the importance of Igf signaling pathway for both growth and head size determination in common carp, which could be potentially used in future selective breeding in common carp as well as other species.

Background: Taper corrosion in total hip arthroplasty for bearings with metal heads against polyethylene has developed from an anecdotal observation to a clinical problem. Increased taper wear and even gross taper failure have been reported for one particular design. It is hypothesized that corrosion of the female head taper results in taper widening, allowing the cobalt-chromium head to turn on the stem and wear down the softer titanium alloy by abrasive wear, ultimately causing failure. The purpose of this study is to investigate the time course of this process and the general role of taper dimensions and material in this problem.Methods: Retrieved cobalt-chromium alloy heads (n = 30, LFIT; Stryker, Mahwah, NJ) and Ti-12Mo-6Zr-2Fe (TMZF) stems (n = 10, Accolade I; Stryker) were available for analysis. Taper material loss was determined using three-dimensional coordinate measurements and scanning. The pristine tip clearance between head and stem was analytically determined. The influence of taper material and taper size on taper deformation and micromotion was investigated using a finite element model.Results: Material loss at the head taper increased with time in situ up to a volume of 20.8 mm3 (P < .001). A mean linear material loss above 76 μm at the head taper was analytically confirmed to result in bottoming out, which was observed in 12 heads. The finite element calculations showed significantly larger deformations and micromotions for a small 11/13 TMZF taper combined with a distinctly different micromotion pattern compared to other materials and taper designs.Conclusion: A 11/13 TMZF taper design with 36-mm head diameters bears a higher risk for corrosion than larger tapers made from stiffer materials. Failures of this combination are not restricted to the head sizes included in the recall. Patients with this implant combination should be closely monitored. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Physical performance is crucial for animal survival and fitness. In this context, greater bite forces can provide advantages and may allow an individual to gain access to reproductive partners and/or different food resources. Here, we explored the determinants of bite force in a wild population of the brown mouse lemur (Microcebus rufus). Our objectives were to elucidate (1) if sex, head width, heart rate (as an indicator of overall physical fitness) and body condition drive variation in bite force in this population of wild mouse lemurs; and (2) the relative importance of the ecological niche in determining bite force by comparing results from this wild population with previously published results on bite force, body mass and head width from a laboratory colony of the grey mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus). We captured 32 wild brown mouse lemurs at night in the Ranomafana National Park in Madagascar during the beginning of the rainy season from 1st to 31st October 2016. We measured bite force, heart rate, body mass and head width of all individuals, and assigned sex and body condition (estimated as the unstandardized residual of a regression of body mass against head size). Although maximum bite force was positively correlated with body mass, it was not correlated with body condition. Residual bite force was highly correlated with residual head width and heart rate. The mean bite force of wild brown mouse lemurs was much lower than that of grey mouse lemurs in captivity, but showed similar relationships to head dimension and body mass. Even when corrected by body condition, grey mouse lemurs bit significantly harder than brown mouse lemurs. The difference in bite force between species could be explained by differences in head size and niche divergence with brown mouse lemurs eating mostly soft fruits and grey mouse lemurs eating more hard insects. Abstract: Objectives: Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) is hypothesized to reflect the level of an individual's developmental instability, and therefore genetic quality. As a potential signal of biological condition, female body (including breast) symmetry was shown to be perceived as more attractive in mate choice context. If symmetry reflects a woman's genetic quality, it is possible that FA, similarly to other maternal anthropometric cues of biological condition (e.g., body height or waist‐to‐hip ratio), may be also related to her offspring condition. Materials and Methods: To test this, breast and body asymmetry was measured in 93 pregnant women in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd pregnancy trimester. Child's birth weight, length, chest and head circumference, information on the Apgar score, congenital malformations, and birth complications was taken from hospital records. The relationships between offspring birth characteristics and maternal breast FA and body FA were analyzed separately, controlled for a child's sex and maternal weight in pregnancy. Results: Breast asymmetry was not a predictor of a child's neonatal condition assessed from morphological parameters at birth. Asymmetry of maternal non‐ornamental body characteristcs, commonly used to assess body FA, correlated negatively with a child's weight, head and chest circumference at birth. Discussion: A composite asymmetry index of eight body traits, non‐sexually selected characteristics, seems to be a better predictor of a woman's ability to invest in fetus during pregnancy than breast asymmetry, sexual ornamentation that is perceived as a signal of a woman's attractiveness and biological condition. Eye size is interesting in snakes because in most species body length differs between the sexes, while the eye's performance depends on its absolute size. So, does the smaller sex see less well? We hypothesized that eye sexual mensural dimorphism (SMD) would be smaller than Body SMD. We found among 26 snake populations that body length SMD was female biased in 47.6% and male biased in 38.1% of samples. Often the larger sex's head was further enlarged but the SMD of absolute eye size was mitigated or annulled by the smaller sex's eye being enlarged within the head, and the head enlarged relative to the body. Overall generally the SMD of eye size was smaller than body SMD. This accords with a hypothesis that eye size affects the evolution of head size and its SMD, both reflecting and emphasizing that absolute eye size is functionally important. Although Colubridae exceed Viperidae in length, Viperidae have larger eyes in absolute terms. In Colubridae the females have larger eyes and in Viperidae the males have larger eyes. Additionally we examine to what extent SMD in different characters is correlated, and briefly review other aspects of SMD, including some aspects of Rensch's rule. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Red Cabbages (Brassica spp.) are becoming popular as intact or fresh-cut products for consumers. Head size and yield are important quality parameters for marketing. These factors are influenced by N application and plant density, which can affect anthocyanin content, which is responsible for the red color and ascorbic acid content. The study was undertaken to determine the influence of nitrogen application rate and plant density on yield, head size, anthocyanin and ascorbic acid contents, and antioxidant activity in Red Cabbage (B. oleracea L. var. capitata f. rubra DC.), cv. Red Jewel. Cabbage plants were fertilized with 40, 80, 120, 160, or 200 kg∙ha−1 N using NH4NO3 at plant densities of 100,000, 125,000, or 166,700 plants∙ha−1, achieved by plant spacings of 20 × 25, 20 × 20, or 20 × 15 cm, respectively. Rates of N and plant density did not affect head size or yield. Anthocyanin and ascorbic acid content and antioxidant activity were higher at 80 kg∙ha−1 N and at 125,000 plants∙ha−1, which can be used without negatively affecting cabbage head size and yield. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has complex neurodevelopmental impairments and origins that are linked to both genetic and environmental factors. Hence, there is an urgency to establish animal models with ASD-like characteristics to understand the underlying mechanisms of ASD. Prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA) produced ASD-like symptoms in humans, rats, and recently zebrafish. The present study investigated the use of VPA exposure to generate an ASD model in zebrafish. Early life stage exposures produced ASD-like phenotypes in the developing brain development and behavioral changes in embryonic and larval zebrafish. Our findings revealed that treating zebrafish embryos with VPA starting at 8 h post fertilization (hpf) resulted in significant: increase in the ASD macrocephalic phenotype; hyperactivity of embryo/larvae movement behaviors; and increases of ASD-like larval social behaviors. Further analysis showed increases in cell proliferation, the proportion of mature newborn neurons, and neural stem cell proliferation in the brain region, which may contribute to the brain overgrowth and macrocephaly observed following VPA exposure. Our study demonstrated that VPA exposure generates ASD-like phenotypes and behaviors, indicating that zebrafish is an alternative model to investigate underlying ASD mechanisms. Abstract: Sexual dimorphism in head size and shape has been documented in many animals and is often thought to be related to the consumption of different prey in males and females thus reducing competition between the two sexes. However, for this to be true, the difference in head size and shape should be associated with a difference in performance allowing one sex to exploit different prey resources. In many durophagous turtle species, females are bigger than males and have bigger heads for a given size. Here, we test whether the observed dimorphism in head size and shape in the durophagous Malaclemys terrapin is reflected in differences in bite force. Furthermore, we measure the forces needed to crush different prey items in order to evaluate whether the observed bite force dimorphism allows access to different dietary resources in females. Finally, we compare head size and shape and bite force between the durophagous M. terrapin and a generalist (Trachemys scripta). Our results show that females of M. terrapin have higher bite forces than males in line with their bigger heads relative to their body size. Moreover, the higher bite forces in females allow them to eat larger as well as different types of snails resulting in differences in diet. Finally, our results show that both sexes of M. terrapin have bigger heads and bite forces for their body size compared to the generalist T. scripta, even as juveniles. Moreover, M. terrapin bite harder even when taking into account differences in head size, suggesting intrinsic differences in the jaw musculature in durophagous species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
