Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a long-term condition affecting all aspects of an individual's life. Specialist Community practitioner district nurses (SCPDN) manage patients with multiple co morbidities on their caseload, and as such require an extensive clinical knowledge base. COPD is a highly prevalent and complex disease; therefore, individualised holistic assessments are required to ensure patients receive personalised and evidence-based care. Care delivery must include an awareness of health interventions encompassing, screening, health promotion and prevention. The SCPDN's consideration of the physical, mental and social determinants which adversely affect the health of the individual with COPD is imperative to deliver high quality care to the individuals, families and communities. This scoping review was designed to determine which adults receive preventative health interventions, the types of interventions for modifiable risk factors, the health professionals, including occupational therapy practitioners providing these interventions, and where they are delivered to adults in the community. The databases searched were PubMed, Ageline, and CINAHL and included research meeting the inclusion criteria and published between 2016–2021. All included studies addressed health prevention. 5,399 articles were screened with 83 of these included in the final review. Older adults, White and Black individuals, and females were the most prevalent individuals and groups to receive health prevention interventions and occupational therapy professionals were involved in 5% of the reviewed studies. As there is a need for preventative health interventions to help reduce negative health outcomes and occupational therapy professionals have important skills in health prevention this study illustrates the types of health prevention provided to adults receiving intervention in the community and points to areas of opportunity for occupational therapy professionals. Abstract Background Prevention policies against type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) focus solely on individual healthy lifestyle behaviours, while an increasing body of research recognises the involvement of environmental determinants (ED) (cultural norms of land management and planning, local foodscape, built environment, pollution, and neighbourhood deprivation). Precise knowledge of this relationship is essential to proposing a prevention strategy integrating public health and spatial planning. Unfortunately, issues related to the consistency and synthesis of methods, and results in this field of research limit the development of preventive strategies. This systematic review aims to improve knowledge about the relationship between the risk of developing T2DM in adulthood and long-term exposure to its ED during childhood or teenage years. Methods This protocol is presented according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA-P) tools. PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, EBSCO, and grey literature from the Laval University Libraries databases will be used for data collection on main concepts such as ‘type 2 diabetes mellitus’, ‘zoning’ or ‘regional, urban, or rural areas land uses’, ‘local food landscape’, ‘built environment’, ‘pollution’, and ‘deprivation’. The Covidence application will store the collected data for selection and extraction based on the Population Exposure Comparator Outcome and Study design approach (PECOS). Studies published until December 31, 2023, in English or French, used quantitative data about individuals aged 18 and over that report on T2DM, ED (cultural norms of land management and planning, local foodscape, built environment, and neighbourhood deprivation), and their association (involving only risk estimators) will be included. Then, study quality and risk of bias will be conducted according to the combined criteria and ratings from the ROBINS-E (Risk of Bias in Non-randomised Studies—of Exposures) tools and the ‘Effective Public Health Practice Project’ (EPHPP). Finally, the analytical synthesis will be produced using the ‘Synthesis Without Meta-analysis’ (SWiM) guidelines. Discussion This systematic review will summarise available evidence on ED associated with T2DM. The results will contribute to improving current knowledge and developing more efficient cross-sectoral interventions in land management and public health in this field of research. Background: Although many countries have introduced strict guidelines regarding mouth and nose coverage in public to contain infection rates during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, more information is needed regarding the impact of wearing face masks on lactate thresholds (LT) and performance parameters during exercise. Methods: Ten healthy male and 10 healthy female subjects (age = 33.4 [10.26] y, body mass index = 23.52 [2.36] kg/m2) performed 3 incremental performance tests, wearing no mask (NM), surgical mask (SM), and filtering face piece mask class 2 (FFP2), with a cycle ergometer. The authors analyzed changes in the LT, in blood gas parameters, and in the rating of perceived exertion (RPE). Results: Performance at LT remained unchanged in subjects wearing SM or FFP2 in comparison with NM (162.5 [50.6] vs 167.2 [58.9] vs 162.2 [58.4] W with NM, SM, and FFP2, respectively, P =.24). However, the peak performance was significantly reduced wearing FFP2 compared with NM (213.8 [71.3] vs 230.5 [77.27] W, FFP2 vs NM, respectively, P <.001). Capillary pCO2 was increased while wearing SM as well as FFP2 compared with NM (29 [3.1] vs 33.3 [4] vs 35.8 [4.9] mmHg with NM, SM, and FFP2, respectively; P <.001), and pO2 decreased under maximum performance (84 [6.7] vs 79.1 [7.5] vs 77.3 [8.2] mmHg with NM, SM, and FFP2, P <.01). Importantly, rating of perceived exertion was significantly increased by wearing FFP2 compared with NM at LT according to Mader (16.7 [2.7] vs 15.3 [1.8] FFP2 vs NM, respectively, P <.01). Conclusion: Wearing face masks during exercise showed no effect on LT, limited maximum performance, and induced discrete changes in capillary pCO2 and pO2 within the physiologic range while increasing RPE at LT. Public health messaging during disasters help to provide knowledge and guidance for preventative behaviours and risk reduction. The aim of this review is to explore how public health messages are currently being provided during disasters and identify what influencing factors contribute to the effectiveness of these messages. Scoping review. A scoping review was conducted using guidance from Joanna Briggs Methodology for Scoping Reviews. A narrative synthesis was utilised due to the heterogeneity of findings. The review included seventeen sources, addressing a variety of disasters around the globe over the past two decades. Three key influencing factors were identified and are illustrated in a concept model called the Audience, Information, Messenger and Mode (AIMM) Public Health Messaging Scale. This conceptual model depicts considerations such as the quantity, quality, and framing of information, the human and technological sources used for delivery and the audience needs and capabilities required for optimal message impact and effectiveness. Public health messages do influence prevention behaviours during disasters, but they must be carefully tailored and delivered to ensure adequate reach, comprehension, and compliance. Thymus serpyllum L. (Lamiaceae), known in English as ‘wild thyme’, is primarily found in the Palearctic realm (Eurasia, North Africa) and has been utilized traditionally for culinary, nutritional, medicinal, and aromatic purposes. The essential oil extracted from wild thyme is particularly noteworthy, being used extensively in the food industry as a flavoring agent and preservative. The plant’s aerial parts are commonly employed as an element of the diet (e.g., tea)/for culinary uses and in local/traditional medicine (primarily for managing respiratory and gastrointestinal conditions), similar to the use of common thyme. There is practically no information available on the species’ nutritional benefits. Pharmacological studies, including in vitro and in vivo research, alongside a limited number of clinical trials, have investigated extracts of Thymus serpyllum, although these extracts are often phytochemically poorly characterized in different experimental protocols and models. These studies have demonstrated a range of therapeutic effects, such as antimicrobial (notably the essential oil) and anti-inflammatory, as well as its preventative health benefits and nutritional value of wild thyme. Preclinical studies have corroborated the plant’s anti-inflammatory potential, particularly in conditions like inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and irritable bowel syndromes (IBS). Additionally, evidence of hepatoprotective activities and benefits in managing metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular health issues, such as lipid metabolism regulation, cholesterol reduction, antidiabetic, antihypertensive, and immunomodulatory effects, have been observed predominantly in rodent models. Phytochemical analysis of wild thyme reveals an essential oil fraction below 1%, along with non-volatile compounds predominantly comprising phenolic acids (such as rosmarinic, salvianolic, and caffeic acids) and flavonoids (mainly glucosides of luteolin, apigenin, and their derivatives). These components are believed to contribute significantly to the plant’s medicinal, nutritional, and preventive health properties. Despite promising findings, there is a need for more rigorously designed controlled clinical trials using phytochemically characterized wild thyme. The plant has an excellent safety and tolerability record. This review at the interface of nutritional/preventive health properties and as pharmacological activities highlights the current role of wild thyme in nutrition and general healthcare as well as its future potential, and also points to important gaps in the literature.

Introduction: Ignited by the persistent health inequalities many cities and neighbourhoods, the 'Healthy and Happy The Hague' network in the Netherlands wanted to gain insight in how prevention and health promotion could become successful in one deprived neighbourhood, Moerwijk. Methods: The cycle of Look-Think-Act of Participatory Action Research was used in which both citizens and professionals got involved from the start. Besides interviews, field notes were analysed, visualised and discussed in several rounds of focus groups. Results: Thematic analysis yielded seven themes: Healthy Eating and Exercise, Healthy Money, Healthy Mind, Healthy Relationships, Growing up healthy, Healthy Environment and Healthy Collaboration. During sessions around combination of themes, eight initiatives were co-created by citizens and professionals together, improving the feeling of ownership and interconnectedness. Discussion and conclusion: This PAR sheds a light on the mismatch between the system world's solutions for individuals and the living world's needs for solutions for the collective. Findings provides a better insight into the social, political, and cultural mechanisms and processes that influence clustering and interaction of health conditions. PAR is a promising process of citizens and professionals working together is an excellent way to learn about the conditions under which people experience health inequalities, and how to combat these inequalities. Maintaining physical activity habits is important for long-term health benefits. Many children do not achieve the World Health Organization (WHO) benchmark of 60 min Moderate-to-Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA) daily. Comprehensive school physical activity programs (CSPAP) target all opportunities at school for children to be physically active. The purpose of this intervention study was to investigate boys’ and girls’ voluntary participation and MVPA in physical activity recess sessions during and after these were connected with the content of physical education.147 (55 girls, 92 boys; mean age = 8 years) second grade children from seven different schools received a 10-lesson parkour unit in physical education and were concurrently offered five parkour recess sessions. After the parkour unit in physical education (i.e., maintenance) another five parkour sessions in which children could voluntarily participate were organized. Systematic observation tools were used to assess children’s MVPA.Overall participation in parkour recess was 64% for both boys and girls. Methоds: The research aims to attract the attention оf educators (current and future) to the essence оf the functional effects оf cheerleading practice. The diagnostic оf the functional indicators were with the asset оf an innovative tооl for diagnosing functional changes, providing a personal QR code on the effects оf cheerleading practice. Results: The specific changes in dynamics inside the indicators that register the metabolic age, were studied. This detailed diagnosis is to develop wellness tооls in Bulgarian schооls as health prevention оf childhооd diabetes. Conclusions: According to the results of our study, functional indicator changes are related to the effectiveness of cheerleading programs. Liver diseases are a widespread and severe health concern, affecting millions worldwide. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) alone affects one-third of the global population, with some Latin American countries seeing rates exceeding 50%. This alarming trend has prompted researchers to explore new methods for identifying those at risk. One promising approach is using Machine Learning Algorithms (MLAs), which can help predict critical factors contributing to liver disease development. Our study examined nine different MLAs across four datasets to determine their effectiveness in predicting this condition. We analyzed each algorithm's performance using five important metrics: accuracy, precision, recall, f1-score, and roc_auc. Our results showed that these algorithms were highly effective when used individually and as part of an ensemble modeling technique such as bagging or boosting. We identified alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and albumin as the top four attributes most strongly associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease risk across all datasets. Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), hemoglobin, age, and prothrombin time also played significant roles. In conclusion, this research provides valuable insights into how we can better detect and prevent non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases by leveraging advanced machine learning techniques. Abstract Aim To determine the effectiveness of despatching an electronic reminder of participation in screening for gestational diabetes. The reminder was sent to the women 1–8 years after delivery. Methods A registry-based, randomized controlled trial in the North Denmark Region among women with gestational diabetes. Randomization was made, which included seven groups stratified by the child’s birth year (2012–2018). The intervention group received standard care supplemented by an electronic reminder through a secure nationwide email system (n = 731), while the control group received only standard care (n = 732). The primary outcome was based on blood testing for diabetes (OGTT, HbA1c or fasting P-glucose). Results A total of 471 (32.1%) women participated in screening. The primary outcome was experienced by 257 women (35.1%) in the intervention group and 214 women (29.2%) in the control group. The effect of the reminder seemed to increase with recipient’s age, non-western origin, urban dwelling, and multiparity. Of those who participated in follow-up screening, 56 (3.8%) were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Conclusion Electronic reminders, based on the principles of informed choice and patient-centred care, to women have been shown to support life-long participation in follow-up screening. Abstract Background Recent developments in eHealth and mobile health (mHealth), as well as the introduction of information and communication technology innovations in clinical practice, such as telemedicine, telemonitoring, and remote examinations, are already changing the current scenario and will continue to generate innovations in the coming decades. The widespread use of mobile devices, with an estimated nearly 30 billion devices and more than 325,000 apps worldwide, will provide various opportunities for people to take control of their own health. Already in 2017, most of the apps available were focused on pregnancy support, more than any other medical field. There have been some reported experiences with social media and mHealth that could benefit the promotion of maternal physical and mental health during pregnancy. However, many apps targeting the first 1000 days of a child’s life do not consider the continuity between the prenatal and postnatal periods and their joint impact on maternal and child health. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of this mHealth app to support women during the first 1000 days (from conception to 24 months of age) and to improve health prevention behaviours such as immunizations during pregnancy, weight gain during pregnancy, abstinence from smoking and alcohol consumption, and adherence to the routine childhood immunization schedule. In addition, the study aims to understand the level of appreciation of this mHealth app as a tool to overcome information and communication gaps between patients and institutions. Methods Conduction of a randomized controlled trial. Discussion Our results will be relevant for improving this mHealth app to promote health and prevention and to support the first 1000 days of life for both mother and child. Our results will be relevant to the future expansion of such an mHealth app to promote positive health-related outcomes in patients and co-user satisfaction and to support the organization of health services. The aim of this article is to examine what needs to happen in central, sub-regional and local government to 'level up' public health in the United Kingdom (UK). The Government's recent Levelling Up White Paper outlined ambitious targets for reducing regional disparities, including a 'mission' to tackle inequalities in healthy life expectancy and reduce inequalities in the social determinants of health outcomes. However, the approach has been criticised for failing to integrate population health policy objectives, programmes and interventions into the implementation of the levelling up agenda and its associated 'missions'. Drawing on a case study of promoting healthy urban development in the UK, we examine how the wider determinants of health might be incorporated into the Government's levelling up strategy. Based on in-depth interviews with 132 urban development actors, our findings reveal that long-term investment in healthy urban development could play a key role in levelling up public health but is not currently part of the Government's plans. We make a timely contribution to the levelling up debate by placing public health centre stage in social science debates. Considering the paradigmatic evolution of the concept of health into physical, psychological, and social well-being and its relational dimension determined by the continuous exchange between individuals, Design for Health Communication has developed new services, tools, and languages. This discussion paper aims to highlight the pivotal role of Communication Design in ensuring accessible content for health prevention and developing tools to inform citizens regarding medical issues and pro-health attitudes and behaviour. As evidence of the research conducted on the sanitary districts of Piacenza, the definition of guidelines for accessible sanitary networks and social actors in the territory redefines the designer's responsibility as a bridge between citizens, doctors, and community in a broader sense, to ensure that the information for a better Health Literacy is both widespread and effective. BackgroundHomocysteine (Hcy) has been associated with an adverse cardiovascular risk profile in adolescents. Assessment of the association between plasma Hcy levels and clinical/laboratory factors might improve our understanding of the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease.MethodsHcy was measured in 1,900 14- to 19-year-old participants of prospective population-based EVA-TYROL Study (44.3% males, mean age 16.4 years) between 2015 and 2018. Factors associated with Hcy were assessed by physical examination, standardized interviews, and fasting blood analysis.ResultsMean plasma Hcy was 11.3 ± 4.5 µmol/L. Distribution of Hcy was characterized by extreme right skew. Males exhibited higher Hcy and sex differences increased with increasing age. Univariate associations with Hcy emerged for age, sex, body mass index, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and for factors pertaining to blood pressure, glucose metabolism, renal function, and diet quality, whereas the most important multivariate predictors of Hcy were sex and creatinine.DiscussionClinical and laboratory factors associated with Hcy in adolescents were manifold, with sex and high creatinine identified as strongest independent determinants. These results may aid when interpreting future studies investigating the vascular risk of homocysteine.

Aims: This study investigated which specific socio-demographic characteristics of the family and child health service centre are associated with parents receiving a video guide. The video guide, intended to be offered universally, aimed at promoting language and literacy development. Methods: The video guide included language and literacy activities and was offered through child healthcare centres to all visiting families. Cross-sectional data were collected during three years through parental self-reported questionnaires when the children were three years old, and families of 2512 children were included. Results: In 60% of the families, none of the parents reported receiving the video guide, and in 84%, none of the parents reported that they had watched the video guide. Most of the parents who watched the video guide reported having tried the presented activities. Socio-demographic characteristics associated with parents having received the video guide were: being married or cohabiting, having a university education, or if the mother was native-born. The child's age when the video guide was initially offered and the child's birth order were also factors associated with parents having received the video guide. Conclusions: The results indicate that few parents overall received the video guide. Socio-economically advantaged parents seemed to have received the video guide to a higher extent. Forty years of research on Unrealistic Optimism - a delusion that negative events are less likely and positive events are more likely to happen to oneself (in comparison to others) - has proved to be robust. Importantly, as a result, people holding this bias reduce their engagement in health prevention and following medical recommendations, etc., leading to the conclusion that this bias is dangerous. However, there is hardly any research on how to reduce this bias. To address this issue, an experiment in the real-life context of the COVID-19 pandemic was run. It was found that participants' Unrealistic Optimism was reduced when they were exposed to the behavior of others who did not follow medical recommendations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This is a theoretical study with a bibliographical and documental approach that was conducted during my PhD. This paper analyzes the structuring of the geriatric/gerontological field, examining the concepts of active aging and functionality, outlining, in particular, the alignment of such terms with the prevention and health promotion movements. The discourse that has become hegemonic in the area is the behavioral emphasis with a highlight on changes in lifestyles. The prevailing discourse announces the aging and illness process increasingly as a result of growing individual (and/or family) efforts, independent of public policies. In this sense, the paper discusses the repercussions of this self-preservationist conception in the context of public policies and highlights the importance of greater investment by researchers in the area, in the sense of building more critical mediations, unveiling the complex contradictions that mark the aging of the working class in Brazil. Background: Mobile-health applications are revolutionising the way healthcare is being delivered. However, current research focusses on apps aimed at monitoring of conditions rather than the prevention of disease. Healthcare apps that prevent disease can be classified as lifestyle apps (LAs) and encompass mindfulness, exercise, and diet apps. In order for widespread implementation of these apps, perspectives of the user must be taken into consideration. Therefore, this systematic literature review identifies the barriers and facilitators to the use of LAs from a user’s perspective. Objective: To both identify the facilitators to the use of LAs from a user perspective as well as identify the barriers to the use of LAs from a user perspective. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Qualitative articles focussed on a healthy non-diseased population were obtained. Two independent researchers coded the articles, and themes were identified. Results: Our results found that there were five barriers and five facilitators to app use. The facilitators included (1) motivational aspects to the user, (2) effective marketing and communication, (3) user-centred design and content, (4) humanising technology, and (5) accessibility. The five barriers identified were (1) a non-conducive, (2) poor marketing and branding, (3) controlling and invasive, (4) disengaging content, and (5) inaccessibility. Conclusions: By overcoming the barriers of LAs and encouraging the facilitators found, users are more likely to engage with this method of health promotion. Future research must be conducted on the barriers and facilitators to development and distribution of apps in order for LAs to be implemented in widespread healthcare practice.

Background : Recent developments in eHealth and mobile health (mHealth), as well as the introduction of information and communication technology innovations in clinical practice, such as telemedicine, telemonitoring, and remote examinations, are already changing the current scenario and will continue to generate innovations in the coming decades. The widespread use of mobile devices, with an estimated nearly 30 billion devices and more than 325,000 apps worldwide, will provide various opportunities for people to take control of their own health. Already in 2017, most of the apps available were focused on pregnancy support, more than any other medical field. There have been some reported experiences with social media and mHealth that could benefit the promotion of maternal physical and mental health during pregnancy. However, many apps targeting the first 1000 days of a child’s life do not consider the continuity between the prenatal and postnatal periods and their joint impact on maternal and child health. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of this mHealth app to support women during the first 1000 days (from conception to 24 months of age) and to improve health prevention behaviours such as immunizations during pregnancy, weight gain during pregnancy, abstinence from smoking and alcohol consumption, and adherence to the routine childhood immunization schedule. In addition, the study aims to understand the level of appreciation of this mHealth app as a tool to overcome information and communication gaps between patients and institutions. Methods: Conduction of a randomized controlled trial. Discussion: Our results will be relevant for improving this mHealth app to promote health and prevention and to support the first 1000 days of life for both mother and child. Our results will be relevant to the future expansion of such an mHealth app to promote positive health-related outcomes in patients and co-user satisfaction and to support the organization of health services. Abstract Background Healthy habits are essential for preschoolers to have a healthy lifestyle. The promotion of these healthy habits from a holistic approach by preschool teachers guarantees a better quality of life and a healthier society. Using cocreation, we designed training for healthy habit promotion for preschool teachers (all@once). Then, we implemented the training and evaluated its impact on classroom teaching strategies. Methods This study presents the all@once training design and its implementation and evaluation during 2019. The cocreation process involved 8 parents, 9 preschool teachers and 9 health professionals (selected by a nonprobabilistic sampling system according to quotas) to design training from a holistic perspective. To evaluate the all@once impact in classroom practice, a pilot study was undertaken in four public schools in Barcelona (Spain). All@once was implemented with 16 volunteer teachers selected by convenience sampling and 328 children. A mixed methods approach was chosen to collect data based on direct nonparticipating naturalist systematic observations in June and October 2019. After qualitative data categorization, changes in health routines and actions at school were assessed by either contingency table analysis of frequency distributions or nonparametric comparisons of two related samples. Results The cocreation process provided training organized into online capsules with a holistic view of health in four main dimensions (nutrition, hygiene, physical activity and emotional health). Of these dimensions, the emotional health dimension comprised half of the training content. Pilot testing of the impact of all@once on classroom health-related activities evidenced an increase in the likelihood of observing fruit consumption by children, healthy habit promotion and hand washing. The most significant all@once-induced changes that we observed were related to teaching strategies concerning the emotional health dimension of the training. Conclusions This pilot study provides evidence of cocreation being a productive way to design training for preschool teachers regarding inclusive education in integral health. This approach collects the needs of the school community, provides training with a holistic concept of health and effectively impacts classroom routines and family health habits in the short term.

The article makes an attempt at providing answers to questions necessary to clarify the doubts related to the universal conviction about the breakthrough of the nineteenth century for the development of health promotion and health prophylaxis. Can ancient texts provide any evidence that it was actually the antiquity that laid the foundations for preventive medicine? Can it be concluded, on the basis of the research conducted by archaeologists, anthropologists and historians, that the increased physical activity and use of diet in antiquity were deliberate preventive actions?

Liver diseases are a widespread and severe health concern, affecting millions worldwide. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) alone affects one-third of the global population, with some Latin American countries seeing rates exceeding 50%. This alarming trend has prompted researchers to explore new methods for identifying those at risk. One promising approach is using Machine Learning Algorithms (MLAs), which can help predict critical factors contributing to liver disease development. Our study examined nine different MLAs across four datasets to determine their effectiveness in predicting this condition. We analyzed each algorithm’s performance using five important metrics: accuracy, precision, recall, f1-score, and roc_auc. Our results showed that these algorithms were highly effective when used individually and as part of an ensemble modeling technique such as bagging or boosting. We identified alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and albumin as the top four attributes most strongly associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease risk across all datasets. Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), hemoglobin, age, and prothrombin time also played significant roles. In conclusion, this research provides valuable insights into how we can better detect and prevent non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases by leveraging advanced machine learning techniques. As such, it represents an exciting opportunity for healthcare professionals seeking more accurate diagnostic tools while improving patient outcomes globally.

Medical test selection is a recurring problem in health prevention and consists of proposing a set of tests to each subject for diagnosis and treatment of pathologies. The problem is characterized by the unknown risk probability distribution across the population and two contradictory objectives: minimizing the number of tests and giving the medical test to all at-risk populations. This article sets this problem in a general framework of chance-constrained medical test rationing with unknown subject distribution over an attribute space and unknown risk probability but with a given sample population. A new approach combining decision-tree and Bayesian inference is proposed to allocate relevant medical tests according to the subjects’ profile. Case studies on screening of hypertension and diabetes are conducted, and the performance of the proposed approach is evaluated. Significant savings on unnecessary tests are achieved with limited numbers of subjects needing but not receiving necessary tests. Note to Practitioners—Whether a medical test is needed for all subjects in health prevention? Is it possible to reduce unnecessary tests without jeopardizing the goal of screening at-risk populations? This article attempts to answer these questions by proposing a data-driven approach combining decision trees for subject profiling, Bayesian inference for unknown probability distribution estimation, and combinatorial optimization for test allocation. The application of this approach to a real-case study reduces the number of electrocardiogram (ECG) tests by 90% while keeping the number of hypertensive subjects needing but not receiving ECG tests small (five out of 230). A significant cut of unnecessary tests is also achieved in a second case study of diabetes screening. This approach allows decision-makers to better balance the cost-saving and the level of public health objective. The article interprets the attitudes in Bulgarian society regarding equal access to healthcare and the assessment of health services quality. Socio-cultural and economic factors leading to distinct inequalities in the provision and receipt of this basic welfare care are thoroughly analyzed. The object of analysis is data obtained from an international comparative study conducted in parallel in more than 50 countries in compliance with uniform standards set by the International Program for Social Research (ISSP). Differences in access to health services and care based on some demographic characteristics, such as age, have been identified and discussed; significant links have been sought and found between material and social status and the degree of (in)tolerance towards the perception of health inequalities as social (in)justice. The general negative assessment and dissatisfaction with the services provided by the health care system, instead of creating readiness to increase the significance of health insurance, push people back and deepen the crisis of confidence in this vital for every society system. The aim of this article was to discuss the issue of kinesiophobia during and after oncological treatment. It highlights the role of the Olympic movement in the field of health promotion and cancer prevention, as well as the role of athletes who have overcame an oncological disease in promoting an active attitude of society towards sport. The attention was paid also to the insufficient number of sports events targeted at onco-patients.

Abstract Background Women with previous gestational diabetes have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. Recommendations therefore urge these women to participate in follow-up screening, 4–12 weeks postpartum and every 1–3 years thereafter. We sought to theorize how reminder interventions to support early detection of diabetes work, for whom, and in what circumstances. Methods We used a method informed by realist review and synthesis. A systematic, iterative search in six electronic databases (PubMed, MEDLINE Ovid, The Cochrane Library, CINAHL, EMBASE) had a primary focus on experimental intervention studies and included additional information in relation to identified intervention studies. Analysis inductively identified context-mechanism-outcome configurations present in the evidence. Results We located 16 articles eligible for inclusion. A cross-case comparison identified seven grouped context-mechanism-outcome configurations leading to intervention mechanisms relating to changes in women’s reasoning and behavior. Configurations were thematically ordered in relation to Systems Resources, Women’s Circumstances, and Continuity of Care. These were mapped onto a socio-ecological model and discussed according to identified middle-range theories. Conclusion Our findings adds to the body of evidence, that reminders have the potential to be effective in increasing participation in the recommended follow-up screening. Our study may assist researchers and policy and decision makers to analyze and judge if reminders are feasible and/or likely to succeed in their specific context. Further research into the perspective of socially disadvantaged and overweight women is needed to avoid unintended consequences such as social inequality in service use and stigmatization in future programs.

The report presents the importance of ergonomic design of school furniture for children's health and for the prevention of socially significant diseases. The basic requirements for the height, depth, width and backrests of school chairs are indicated. The most important health problems arising from the daily spending of inappropriate furniture at school are considered. Some of the causes leading to musculoskeletal disorders, stress and visual fatigue are analyzed. Ergonomics as a science and the need of changing the schoolwork environment are discussed. Nurses working in communities and churches can promote health behaviors that may reduce the incidence and impact of chronic conditions. Objective: to verify the association between sociodemographic characteristics and the performance of actions for early detection of breast cancer. Methods: a cross-sectional study was carried out in six primary health care units, with 400 women considered a target population for actions for early detection of breast cancer. Results: most women were between 60 and 64 years old, married, had low education and lacked an occupation or health insurance. Solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) continues to be a decisive influencing factor for skin health. Besides acute damage (e.g. erythema), chronic light damage is of particular relevance. Skin cancer can develop on the basis of this light damage. Knowledge about irradiation is crucial for the choice of preventive measures, but has so far been incomplete in many occupational and leisure activities. Often a methodological problem in study design is the cause. Here we report on the clarification of two issues. First, further values are to be determined on the way to a comprehensive exposure register of leisure-related activities. Furthermore, it is to be determined to what extent the measurement setting can have an influence on the measurement campaigns. For long-term measurements, football referees were equipped with dosimeters over several months, selective measurements during visits to parks were carried out by on-site recruitment of test persons. It turned out that the choice of method also depends on the expected compliance of the test persons. Long-term measurements of specific activities such as playing football are particularly suitable for observing the course of UV exposure over the year and generating resilient mean values. Point measurements such as visits to parks can also do this if there are enough such events spread over the year. However, they are particularly suitable for such on-site campaigns, as they may be combined with awareness campaigns of the issue of skin cancer. They also allow many measurements to be taken at the same time in one place. Both playing football and visiting parks are associated with high levels of radiation, so specific prevention concepts need to be developed. We were able to determine that the sunburn dose for light skin types was reached or exceeded for both of the investigated activities.

Background: Mobile-health applications are revolutionising the way healthcare is being delivered. However, current research focusses on apps aimed at monitoring of conditions rather than the prevention of disease. Healthcare apps that prevent disease can be classified as lifestyle apps (LAs) and encompass mindfulness, exercise, and diet apps. In order for widespread implementation of these apps, perspectives of the user must be taken into consideration. Therefore, this systematic literature review identifies the barriers and facilitators to the use of LAs from a user's perspective. Objective: To both identify the facilitators to the use of LAs from a user perspective as well as identify the barriers to the use of LAs from a user perspective. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Qualitative articles focussed on a healthy non-diseased population were obtained. Two independent researchers coded the articles, and themes were identified. Results: Our results found that there were five barriers and five facilitators to app use. The facilitators included (1) motivational aspects to the user, (2) effective marketing and communication, (3) user-centred design and content, (4) humanising technology, and (5) accessibility. The five barriers identified were (1) a non-conducive, (2) poor marketing and branding, (3) controlling and invasive, (4) disengaging content, and (5) inaccessibility. Conclusions: By overcoming the barriers of LAs and encouraging the facilitators found, users are more likely to engage with this method of health promotion. Future research must be conducted on the barriers and facilitators to development and distribution of apps in order for LAs to be implemented in widespread healthcare practice. los trastornos emocionales (TU) son frecuentes durante los tratamientos de fertilidad. El Protocolo Unificado (PU) es una intervención transdiagnóstica que ha demostrado su eficacia en la prevención de TE en condiciones médicas. El objetivo de este estudio piloto es: 1) mejorar la disregulación emocional para prevenir síntomas ansiosos y depresivos cn mujeres en tratamiento de inseminación artificial (IA); 2) evaluar la aceptabilidad (satisfacción y adherencia). Método: 5 mujeres en tratamiento de IA, sin diagnóstico clínico, respondieron a medidas de estado de ánimo (ansiedad y depresión), afecto, calidad de vida y regulación emocional cn el pre- y post-evaluación, y en los seguimientos a los 1, 3 y 6 meses. La adaptación preventiva del PU se basó en la aplicación de 6 sesiones presenciales grupales de 2 horas de duración. La situación generada por la COV1D-19 provocó el cambio al formato online para finalizar el programa. Resultados: las mujeres no desarrollaron TE, no se encontraron diferencias pre-post y pre-seguimientos estadísticamente significativas en ansiedad, depresión, calidad de vida y disregulación emocional (p > .050). Se observa una tendencia a la mejoría en la evaluación post-programa. Conclusiones: Parece que programas como el PU, centrado en factores terapéuticos compartidos, ha tenido un efecto emocional preventivo durante IA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Objectives The current literature lacks a detailed and standardised description of public health knowledge translation (KT) activities designed to be applied at local levels of health systems. As part of an ongoing research project called the Transfert de connaissances en regions (TC-REG project), we aim to develop a local KT taxonomy in the field of health prevention by means of a participative study between researchers, decision-makers and field professionals. This KT taxonomy provides a comparative description of existing local health prevention KT strategies. Methods Two methods were used to design a participative process conducted in France to develop the taxonomy, combining professional meetings (two seminars) and qualitative interviews. The first step involved organising a seminar in Paris, attended by health prevention professionals from health agencies in four regions of France and regional non-profit organisations for health education and promotion. This led to the drafting of regional KT plans to be implemented in the four regions. In a second step, we conducted interviews to obtain a clear understanding of the KT activities implemented in the regions. Based on data from interviews, a KT taxonomy was drawn up and discussed during a second seminar. Results Our work resulted in a KT taxonomy composed of 35 standardised KT activities, grouped into 11 categories of KT activities, e.g. dissemination of evidence, support for use of evidence through processes and structures, KT advocacy, and so on. Conclusions The taxonomy appears to be a promising tool for developing and evaluating KT plans for health prevention in local contexts by providing some concrete examples of potential KT activities (advocacy) and a comparison of the same activities and their outcomes (evaluation).
