Abstract

A transient in the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822 (Barnard's Galaxy) was discovered on 2017 August 2 and is only the second classical nova discovered in that galaxy. We conducted optical, near-ultraviolet, and X-ray follow-up observations of the eruption, the results of which we present here. This 'very fast' nova had a peak $V$-band magnitude in the range $-7.41>M_V>-8.33$ mag, with decline times of $t_{2,V} = 8.1 \pm 0.2$ d and $t_{3,V} = 15.2 \pm 0.3$ d. The early- and late-time spectra are consistent with an Fe II spectral class. The H$\alpha$ emission line initially has a full width at half-maximum intensity of $\sim 2400$ km s$^{-1}$ - a moderately fast ejecta velocity for the class. The H$\alpha$ line then narrows monotonically to $\sim1800$ km s$^{-1}$ by 70 d post-eruption. The lack of a pre-eruption coincident source in archival Hubble Space Telescope imaging implies that the donor is a main sequence, or possibly subgiant, star. Abstract

Background: Struvite, biochar and ash products (collectively known as STRUBIAS) derived from different waste streams are used as fertilisers in agriculture. Raw dairy processing sludge (DPS) shows promise as bio‐based fertilisers, but secondary STRUBIAS‐derived products need further testing as fertilisers. Aims: The objective of this study was to calculate the phosphorus mineral fertiliser equivalency (P‐MFE) for some STRUBIAS products derived from DPS. Methods: Ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum) pot trials were used to determine the P‐MFE using the apparent P recovery (APR) method for Fe‐DPS and DPS‐derived struvites (Struvite 1–4), hydrochars (HC1–3) and ash. Results: The tested STRUBIAS products can be divided into two groups: (1) a range of products that can (i.e. Struvite 1–3) and (2) cannot (i.e., Struvite 4, HC1–3, ash and Fe‐DPS) be considered fertilisers. In the first group, the P‐MFE ranged from 66.8% to 76.7% for ryegrass and from 77.9% to 93.5% for spring wheat grain. In the second group, the P‐MFE ranged from 7.8% to 58.3% for ryegrass and from −34.5% to −151.3% for spring wheat grain. The negative agronomic effects of some products for wheat grain (struvite and HC) in this study were mainly caused by high Fe content, which could be overcome by improved treatment processes. Conclusions: Future policy and research must be aware that not all the DPS‐derived STRUBIAS products are suitable as fertilisers and therefore need to be tested individually. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory consists of 1600 water-Cherenkov detectors, for the study of extensive air showers (EAS) generated by ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. We describe the trigger hierarchy, from the identification of candidate showers at the level of a single detector, amongst a large background (mainly random single cosmic ray muons), up to the selection of real events and the rejection of random coincidences. Such trigger makes the surface detector array fully efficient for the detection of EAS with energy above $3\times 10^{18}$ eV, for all zenith angles between 0$^\circ$ and 60$^\circ$, independently of the position of the impact point and of the mass of the primary particle. In these range of energies and angles, the exposure of the surface array can be determined purely on the basis of the geometrical acceptance., Comment: 29 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

The Pierre Auger Observatory is a hybrid detector for ultra-high energy cosmic rays. It combines a surface array to measure secondary particles at ground level together with a fluorescence detector to measure the development of air showers in the atmosphere above the array. The fluorescence detector comprises 24 large telescopes specialized for measuring the nitrogen fluorescence caused by charged particles of cosmic ray air showers. In this paper we describe the components of the fluorescence detector including its optical system, the design of the camera, the electronics, and the systems for relative and absolute calibration. We also discuss the operation and the monitoring of the detector. Finally, we evaluate the detector performance and precision of shower reconstructions., Comment: 53 pages. Abstract

From direct observations of the longitudinal development of ultra-high energy air showers performed with the Pierre Auger Observatory, upper limits of 3.8%, 2.4%, 3.5% and 11.7% (at 95% c.l.) are obtained on the fraction of cosmic-ray photons above 2, 3, 5 and 10 EeV (1 EeV = 10^18 eV) respectively. These are the first experimental limits on ultra-high energy photons at energies below 10 EeV. The results complement previous constraints on top-down models from array data and they reduce systematic uncertainties in the interpretation of shower data in terms of primary flux, nuclear composition and proton-air cross-section., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. Abstract

Background: Despite the substantial burden of asthma-related emergency department (ED) visits, there have been no recent multicenter efforts to characterize this high-risk population. Objective: We aimed to characterize patients with asthma according to their frequency of ED visits and to identify factors associated with frequent ED visits. Methods: A multicenter chart review study of 48 EDs across 23 US states. We identified ED patients ages 18 to 54 years with acute asthma during 2011 and 2012. Primary outcome was frequency of ED visits for acute asthma in the past year, excluding the index ED visit. Results: Of the 1890 enrolled patients, 863 patients (46%) had 1 or more (frequent) ED visits in the past year. Specifically, 28% had 1 to 2 visits, 11% had 3 to 5 visits, and 7% had 6 or more visits. Among frequent ED users, guideline-recommended management was suboptimal. For example, of patients with 6 or more ED visits, 85% lacked evidence of prior evaluation by an asthma specialist, and 43% were not treated with inhaled corticosteroids. In a multivariable model, significant predictors of frequent ED visits were public insurance, no insurance, and markers for chronic asthma severity (all P < .05). Stronger associations were found among those with a higher frequency of asthma-related ED visits (eg, 6 or more ED visits). Conclusion: This multicenter study of US adults with acute asthma demonstrated many frequent ED users and suboptimal preventive management in this high-risk population. Future reductions in asthma morbidity and associated health care utilization will require continued efforts to bridge these majorgaps in asthma care.

Abstract

The Pierre Auger Observatory is designed to study cosmic rays with energies greater than 10^{19} eV. Two sites are envisaged for the observatory, one in each hemisphere, for complete sky coverage. The southern site of the Auger Observatory, now approaching completion in Mendoza, Argentina, features an array of 1600 water-Cherenkov surface detector stations covering 3000 km^2, together with 24 fluorescence telescopes to record the air shower cascades produced by these particles. The two complementary detector techniques together with the large collecting area form a powerful instrument for these studies. Although construction is not yet complete, the Auger Observatory has been taking data stably since January 2004 and the first physics results are being published. Abstract

A key step towards the understanding of the origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays is their mass composition. Primary photons and neutrinos produce markedly different showers from nuclei, while showers of different nuclear species are not easy to distinguish. To maximise the discrimination with the Pierre Auger Observatory ideally all mass-sensitive observables should be combined, but the 10% duty cycle of the fluorescence detector limits the use of direct measurements of shower maximum at the highest energies. Therefore, we investigate mass-sensitive observables accessible with the surface detectors alone. These are the signal risetime in the Cherenkov stations, the curvature of the shower front, the muon-to-electromagnetic ratio, and the azimuthal signal asymmetry. Risetime and curvature depend mainly on the depth of the shower development in the atmosphere, and thus on primary energy and mass. The muon content of a shower depends on the primary energy and the number of nucleons, while asymmetry about the shower core is due to geometric effects and attenuation, which are dependent on the primary mass. 28. Studies towards the C1-C17 fragment of the potent antimitotic spongistatin 1

Abstract

This thesis is divided into 7 chapters. Chapter 1 describes the history of the spongistatin family. The isolation of the spongistatins, cinachyrolide and the altohyrtins is reviewed. The structural assignments of these molecules is then discussed and their common identities highlighted. A discussion of the biological properties of the spongistatins then follows before summarising the structural features of the molecules and the issues they pose towards a total synthesis. The spiroketal fragments of the spongistatins are then examined more closely. Spiroketal containing natural products and synthetic methods towards spiroketals are then reviewed. Chapter 2 reviews the synthetic work which has been conducted towards the total synthesis of the spongistatins, paying attention to the 4 groups who have so far completed a total synthesis of one of the spongistatin molecules. Chapter 3 is a review of the strategy our group has taken towards the total synthesis of spongistatin 1. The synthesis of major fragments is described and synthetic problems that have been encountered and have led to a change in the strategy towards the AB spiroketal containing, C1-C17 fragment of spongistatin 1. Chapter 4 outlines the new strategy towards the C1-C17 fragment of spongistatin 1. Synthesis of the C8-C17 fragment is described in detail, with particular attention paid to functionalisation of the C13 alkene via a Wacker oxidation, Shapiro reaction and higher-order cuprate addition to a C12 epoxide. Coupling of a C8 aldehyde with an anomeric phosphonium salt is discussed, and the need for another change is strategy is outlined. Chapters 5 describes the new route to the AB spiroketal via a 1,3-diketone. Synthesis of this fragment is described, and modifications made due to protecting group issues are described in detail, culminating in the successful synthesis of the AB spiroketal. An exciting unified approach to the AB and CD spiroketals is then summarised in Chapter 6.

Few studies have examined exercise placement within children-specific programming. This study aimed to investigate the frequency and type of exercise placement in children-specific television broadcasts and to compare placements on the UK and Irish television channels.Methods: Content analysis for five weekdays’ worth of children-specific television broadcasting totaling 82.5 hours on both the UK (British Broadcasting Corporation) and Irish (Radió Teilifís Éireann) television channels was performed. For the purposes of comparing the UK and Irish placements, analysis was restricted to programming broadcast between 6 am and 11.30 am. Exercise placements were coded based on type of activity, activity context, activity motivating factors and outcome, and characters involved.Results: A total of 780 cues were recorded during the total recording period. A wide variety of sports were depicted, but dancing-related cues were most commonly seen (n=163, 23.3%), with the majority of cues being of mild (n=365, 65.9%) or moderate (n=172, 31.0%) intensity. The majority of cues were associated with a positive outcome (n=404, 61.4%), and social motivations were most commonly seen (n=289, 30.3%). The Irish and the UK portrayals were broadly similar.Conclusion: This study highlights the wide variety of sports portrayed and the active effort undertaken by television stations to depict physical exercise and recreation in a positive light. Abstract

For the first time in a spaceflight operational environment, our team enabled an ISS (International Space Station) crewmember to plan, reschedule, and execute their activities in real-time while abiding by flight and scheduling constraints. The Crew Autonomous Scheduling Test (CAST) investigated the novel concept of operations: allowing crew to manage their own timeline.
