Noise is the subject of the student resource unit to be used with high school vocational agriculture students. The nature of noise as a phenomenon and as a problem is clarified. Sources of noise pollution and the decibel levels they produce are described. Among the effects of noise pollution discussed are hearing loss, annoyance, and accidental injury. Control and abatement potentials are suggested. Sections of the document cover current action and future progress. A nine-item bibliography is appended. (MS)

Wisconsin's community centered medical and educational services for handicapped children are surveyed, including programs for defective hearing and/or defective vision, hearing conservation, and speech correction. Also reviewed are programs for crippled children (including cardiacs), emotionally disturbed and mentally retarded children, and children having learning disabilities or needing home instruction. Special supportive services include boarding home placement, medical social service, instructional materials consultant, and research and evaluation; general supportive services are teacher training institutions and teacher training, recruitment, and certification. Appendixes present state statute provisions on financing special programs; scholarships for handicapped students; federal legislative provisions for personnel preparation in the area of the handicapped; the Title VI-A, ESEA program; staff of the Division for Handicapped Children; and geographic areas of assignment. The general status of Ohio's school program of speech and hearing therapy is described in terms of its historical perspective and past achievements, the present status of therapist employment, percentages of trained personnel provided by various universities, and suggestions for needed research. Information concerning program standards includes the areas of certification, state board of education program standards and related division policies, equipment and facilities, program organization, records and reports, sources of professional assistance, and an overview of the program within the school system. The hearing conservation program is summarized, and methods of audiometric evaluations are provided. (RD)

THE SACRAMENTO CITY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT DEVELOPED THREE PROJECTS UNDER THE TITLE "PROGRAMS AND SERVICES FOR THE EDUCATIONALLY DEPRIVED" WHICH WERE FUNDED UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF THE ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION ACT OF 1965 AND THE CALIFORNIA MCATEER ACT OF 1965. IMPLEMENTED DURING THE SPRING SEMESTER, 1966, THESE THREE PROJECTS WERE (1) LANGUAGE ARTS DEVELOPMENT AND REMEDIATION IN READING, (2) PROVISION OF EQUAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH EXTENDED SERVICES, AND (3) PROFESSIONAL GROWTH, IN-SERVICE TRAINING AND CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT. THE FIRST PROJECT UTILIZED READING AND LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT CENTERS, A CENTRAL MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT REPOSITORY, TEACHER AIDES, AND STUDY TRIPS. THE SECOND PROJECT INCLUDED A MOBILE AUDIOMETRIC LABORATORY TO PROVIDE BETTER SERVICES, ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COUNSELING SERVICES, EXTENDED LIBRARY HOURS, A SPECIAL PROGRAM FOR PREGNANT GIRLS, AND A SUMMER SESSION FOR KINDERGARTEN--PRIMARY PUPILS. THE THIRD PROJECT PROVIDED SUMMER AND IN-SERVICE TRAINING TO TEACHERS. COMPLETE PROJECT EVALUATIONS, STATISTICS, AND TABLES ARE PRESENTED. (SF)

Hearing damage from noise exposure and approaches to implementing hearing safety in school industrial laboratories through noise reduction and protective equipment are discussed. Although all states have not adopted the Occupational Safety and Health Act, teachers should be aware of noise hazards and act to protect hearing. (MF)

Noise is the single most omnipresent noxious contaminant in the American environment, yet little attention has been paid to its dangers and relatively small amounts of money spent to control it. Compares the effects and management of hearing impairment due to noise with those resulting from other causes. (Editor)

The purpose of this study was to analyze the different noise levels found in four agricultural mechanics facilities selected as being representative of the concrete and brick veneer type and the predominately steel type. The type of instructional programs considered were the laboratory skill oriented and the project construction oriented. A questionnaire was administered to students to determine: (1) what noises annoy them most, (2) which of eight characteristics causes it to be annoying, (3) what activities they are engaged in when annoyed most, and (4) students' perception of the aural environment. Speech interference levels were found by measuring the sound levels with a Bruel and Kjaer impulse precision sound level meter fitted with an octave filter set. The most annoying sounds to students were from: (1) pedestal and portable disc grinders, and (2) chipping and hammering slag. It was concluded that noise levels found in most agricultural mechanics facilities are not uncommon to what would be expected but that audio-communication is inhibited beyond a tolerable degree. The purpose of this study was to determine what noise levels existed at selected work stations in college welding laboratories while students were working and whether this noise exposure had any effect on the hearing acuity of students. Audiometric tests were administered to an experimental group of welding students in the noise of a welding laboratory and to a control group in the quieter environment of an art laboratory. It was found that the experimental group pretest and posttest scores showed a significant temporary threshold shift in hearing acuity of a mean 4.6 decibels at the frequency of 4000 hertz but that no significant permanent shift resulted from arc-welding noise for a limited period. However, with 37 percent of the work stations surveyed exposing students to sound-pressure levels up to 96 decibels and with the experimental group's temporary hearing loss experience, it was concluded that some school welding laboratories are exposing students to ambient noise conditions which are of definite concern. It was recommended that serious efforts be made to reduce noise exposure to students in school welding laboratories and that welding curriculums include instruction related to the hazards of excessive noise exposure and also to protective measures against it. Physically, noise is a complex sound that has little or no periodicity. However, the essential characteristic of noise is its undesirability. Thus, noise can be defined as any annoying or unwanted sound. In recent years, the rapid increase of noise level in our environment has become a national public health hazard. Noise affects man's state of mental, physical, and social well-being. The problem forms a special type of air pollution. Noise study is a rather new subject among other branches of science. The transition from art to near-science started before World War II. The work is an attempt to arrive at an understanding of the general situation on the problem of noise. The survey consists of four major parts: the present status of noise pollution, its sources, its effects, and the control. Finally, lists of terminology and a bibliography relating to noise pollution problems are included. (Author/JR)
