Recent studies using the diffusion decision model find that performance across many cognitive control tasks can be largely attributed to a task-general efficiency of evidence accumulation (EEA) factor that reflects individuals' ability to selectively gather evidence relevant to task goals. However, estimates of EEA from an n-back "conflict recognition" paradigm in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive DevelopmentSM (ABCD) Study, a large, diverse sample of youth, appear to contradict these findings. EEA estimates from "lure" trials--which present stimuli that are familiar (i.e., presented previously) but do not meet formal criteria for being a target--show inconsistent relations with EEA estimates from other trials and display atypical v-shaped bivariate distributions, suggesting many individuals are responding based largely on stimulus familiarity rather than goal-relevant stimulus features. We present a new formal model of evidence integration in conflict recognition tasks that distinguishes individuals' EEA for goal-relevant evidence from their use of goal-irrelevant familiarity. We then investigate developmental, cognitive, and clinical correlates of these novel parameters. Parameters for EEA and goal-irrelevant familiarity-based processing showed strong correlations across levels of n-back load, suggesting they are task-general dimensions that influence individuals' performance regardless of working memory demands. Only EEA showed large, robust developmental differences in the ABCD sample and an independent age-diverse sample. EEA also exhibited higher test-retest reliability and uniquely meaningful associations with clinically relevant dimensions. These findings establish a principled modeling framework for characterizing conflict recognition mechanisms and have several broader implications for research on individual and developmental differences in cognitive control.

Abstract Background The number of older adults entering the criminal justice system is growing. Approximately 8% of older prisoners in England and Wales have suspected dementia or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and experience difficulties in everyday functioning, and disruption to their daily life. At present, no specific dementia/MCI care pathway has been implemented that is applicable and appropriate for use across different prisons in England and Wales. The aim of this paper is to explore the experiences of older adults with dementia/MCI in prison, and a range of key stakeholders, around the day-to-day issues faced by people with dementia/MCI and prison, healthcare, and third sector staff regarding the delivery of support for individuals with dementia/MCI. Methods Thirty-two semi structured interviews were conducted with prison, local authority, and healthcare staff; peer supporters; third sector care providers; and individuals with dementia/MCI themselves, across five establishments, to provide multidimensional perspectives of dementia/MCI in criminal justice settings. The data obtained during interviews were thematically analysed. Results From the data, six key themes emerged: (I) ethical concerns around trial, sentencing and detainment for people with dementia/MCI; (II) An unforgiving prison system, providing physical and social environments incompatible with supporting individuals with dementia/MCI; (III) An unprepared workforce requiring training in dementia/MCI. (IV) A lack of collaboration leading to sub-optimum management of the support needs of people with dementia/MCI in prison; (V) Peer support ‘plugging the gap’; and (VI) staff ‘hands tied behind back’. Conclusions Results point towards a pressing need to develop more appropriate support systems for individuals with dementia/MCI throughout the criminal justice system. Ethical concerns around the judicial process for individuals with diminished cognitive capacity must be considered. Prison governors should examine ways to make the living environment more appropriate for these individuals, and a joined-up collaborative approach to health and social care should be adopted. Staff must be appropriately trained to support and identify individuals with dementia/MCI. Peer support schemes require formal evaluation, and training/oversight of these schemes should be comprehensive.

Abstract Ecological character displacement, whereby shifts in resource use in the presence of competing species leads to adaptive evolutionary divergence, is widely considered an important process in community assembly and adaptive radiation. However, most evidence for character displacement has been inferred from macro-scale geographic or phylogenetic patterns; direct tests of the underlying hypothesis of divergent natural selection driving character displacement in the wild are rare. Here, we document character displacement between two ecologically similar lizards (Anolis sagrei and A. cristatellus) experiencing novel contact. We identify directional selection during the incipient stages of sympatry in a new community that corresponds to repeated trait divergence across multiple established sympatric communities. By identifying the role of natural selection as character displacement unfolds, we connect how natural selection operating at short timescales may drive broader patterns of trait distributions at larger spatial and temporal scales.

PURPOSE: Patients with cancer often experience elevated levels of distress. This double-blind, randomized controlled trial compared the impact of an app-based version of cognitive behavioral stress management (CBSM) versus a health education sham app on anxiety and depression symptoms. METHODS: Patients with nonmetastatic (stage I-III) cancer who were receiving or recently completed (≤6 months) systemic treatment were recruited nationwide. The primary outcome of change in anxiety symptoms (PROMIS-Anxiety) over 12 weeks and the top secondary outcome of change in depression symptoms (PROMIS-Depression) over 12 weeks were analyzed using mixed-effects modeling with repeated measures (weeks 0, 4, 8, 12). Patient global impressions of change in anxiety and depression were reported at weeks 4, 8, and 12. In addition, self-reported adverse events were collected throughout the study and adjudicated by the site principal investigator. RESULTS: Four hundred forty-nine patients were enrolled in the trial (age M [standard deviation] = 52.44 [11.46]; 81% female; 76% White; 53% breast cancer). Patients randomly assigned to digitized CBSM showed significantly greater reductions in anxiety (B = -0.03; P = .019) and depression (B = -0.02; P = .042) symptoms over 12 weeks. Patients who received digitized CBSM were also significantly more likely to perceive much or very much improvement (v no/minimal change or much/very much worse) in their symptoms of anxiety (χ2 = 31.76; P < .001) and depression (χ2 = 19.70; P < .001) compared with the control. CONCLUSION: The use of digitized CBSM led to significant improvements in anxiety and depression outcomes compared with the sham app.

Background Suicidal thoughts and behaviours are common in people in prison and associated with poor health outcomes, including suicide, injury and repeat self-harm.Objective To develop and validate a model to stratify risk of repeat suicidality up to 3 months in people in prison.Methods In seven English prisons, we identified 754 people aged over 17 who had been placed on a suicide risk management plan after a self-harm episode or elevated risk. We developed a multivariable model to stratify risk of repeat suicidality at 3 months using routinely collected sociodemographic, clinical and prison-related factors, which were tested using Cox proportional HR models. In a prospective validation sample of 390 people from 13 prisons, we tested this model to assess risk of repeat suicidality at 3 months across a range of performance measures.Findings Of the overall sample of 1144 people in prison (n=966 men or 84%, mean age 33 years), 22% had the outcome of repeat suicidality over 3 months. The final risk model consisted of nine factors, including sex, calendar age and features of recent suicidal behaviour. Calibration and discrimination were similar in both development and validation samples, with O:E ratio=1.09 (95% CI 0.88 to 1.35) and c-statistic=0.66 (95% CI 0.60 to 0.72) in external validation. At a 25% cut-off, sensitivity was 58% (50 to 66) and specificity was 72% (68 to 75) in external validation. Abstract. Introduction:. Alexithymia is elevated in chronic pain and relates to poor pain-related outcomes. However, despite concerns from other clinical populations, the psychometric properties of alexithymia measures have not been rigorously established in chronic pain. Objective:. This study examined the psychometric properties of the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 Item (TAS-20) and the Perth Alexithymia Questionnaire (PAQ) in adults with chronic pain. Methods:. An online sample of adults with chronic pain across the United States (N = 1453) completed the TAS-20, PAQ, and related questionnaires at baseline, 3-month follow-up, and 12-month follow-up. Results:. Both measures showed good temporal stability, convergent validity (with emotion regulation scores), divergent validity (with depression and anxiety scores), and criterion validity. Some concerns were raised about the TAS-20: the original 3-factor structure showed a poor model fit; the Externally Oriented Thinking subscale of the TAS-20 had poor factor loadings and unacceptable internal consistency; and, we identified several TAS-20 items that may slightly inflate the predictive validity of the TAS-20 on pain-related outcomes. The original 5-factor structure of the PAQ showed a good fit; each PAQ subscale had good factor loadings and excellent internal consistency. Conclusions:. Both the TAS-20 and PAQ had psychometric strengths. Our data raised some concern for the use of TAS-20 subscales; the PAQ may be a psychometrically stronger option, particularly for investigators interested in alexithymia subscale analysis in people with chronic pain.

Many animals are capable of rapid dynamic colour change, which is particularly well represented in fishes. The proximate mechanisms of dynamic colour change in fishes are well understood; however, less attention has been given to understanding its ecological relevance. In this study, we investigate dynamic colour change in zebrafish (Danio rerio) across multiple contexts, using a protocol to image the colouration of live fish without anaesthesia under standardized conditions. We show that zebrafish respond to different visual environments by darkening their overall colouration in a dark environment and lightening in a light environment. This is consistent with crypsis through background matching as a function of dynamic colour change. Additionally, we find that zebrafish use dynamic colour change to increase the internal contrast of their striped patterning in the presence of conspecifics. We speculate that this may function in social signalling and/or dazzle colouration. We find no effect of a predator stimulus on dynamic colour change. Finally, we discuss the potential for zebrafish to use multiple colouration strategies simultaneously as distance-dependent effects, considering the typical viewing distances of zebrafish and their predators.

Practice in real-world settings exhibits many idiosyncracies of scheduling and duration that can only be roughly approximated by laboratory research. Here we investigate 39,157 individuals' performance on two cognitive games on the Lumosity platform over a span of 5 years. The large-scale nature of the data allows us to observe highly varied lengths of uncontrolled interruptions to practice and offers a unique view of learning in naturalistic settings. We enlist a suite of models that grow in the complexity of the mechanisms they postulate and conclude that long-term naturalistic learning is best described with a combination of long-term skill and task-set preparedness. We focus additionally on the nature and speed of relearning after breaks in practice and conclude that those components must operate interactively to produce the rapid relearning that is evident even at exceptionally long delays (over 2 years). Naturalistic learning over long time spans provides a strong test for the robustness of theoretical accounts of learning, and should be more broadly used in the learning sciences.

Although regulations and established practices in academia have focused on a data-rich model of performance information, both to evidence operational capability and to support recruitment, it is considered that this approach has been largely ineffective in addressing student choice behaviour. Historical studies, business, psychology, and technology theories have pointed to the oversimplification that a data-led strategy can result in for mapping human behaviour. In this case, decision processes of students are understood to be nuanced by a vast range of factors with variable relevance for everyone. The effort of the study is to address how Systems Thinking, related policy development, and associated enabling techniques can be applied to the field to provide both a deeper understanding of the dictates of student behaviour and, by extension, the appropriate foci for data provision, enabling comparative business performance assessment of Higher Education Providers. This research has followed the Design Science Research (DSR) methodology; the developed model has been successfully evaluated against the understanding of education practitioners in an interview consultation process of the methodology. The analysis of interview feedback and the development and refinement of the proposed model generate the principle findings of the study. The model outlines the factors that might affect students' choices in the UK Higher Education.

Abstract The ability to stop simple ongoing actions has been extensively studied using the stop signal task, but less is known about inhibition in more complex scenarios. Here we used a task requiring bimanual responses to go stimuli, but selective inhibition of only one of those responses following a stop signal. We assessed how proactive cues affect the nature of both the responding and stopping processes, and the well-documented stopping delay (interference effect) in the continuing action following successful stopping. In this task, estimates of the speed of inhibition based on a simple-stopping model are inappropriate, and have produced inconsistent findings about the effects of proactive control on motor inhibition. We instead used a multi-modal approach, based on improved methods of detecting and interpreting partial electromyographical responses and the recently proposed SIS (simultaneously inhibit and start) model of selective stopping behaviour. Our results provide clear and converging evidence that proactive cues reduce the stopping delay effect by slowing bimanual responses and speeding unimanual responses, with a negligible effect on the speed of the stopping process.
