This study evaluates deviance among academicians in university settings. A typology is suggested which includes two dimensions and delineates four basic types of academic deviance. The relationship of these types to university and disciplinary organization is offered as the sources of academic deviance are explained.

This research examines a newspaper sample of men and women who killed multiple people in a single domestic altercation during the years 1993 to 2002. As all these perpetrators of multiple domestic homicide are eligible to be capitally tried, differences in capital sentencing are examined using bivariate statistics and descriptive, case-oriented analyses. Women who kill their children using a knife or firearm are disproportionately sentenced to death, whereas men who kill in the context of a separation are granted leniency in regard to the death penalty. Using observations and interviews of a girls high school field hockey team, this article investigates the values conveyed through participating in this sport. As the team had a lengthy record of success, the main value that permeated the team's culture was that of winning. Contrary to other scholars who tend to emphasize the negative consequences of having a high value placed on winning, this study suggests that winning can have generally positive results for the players and the community. The article discusses a growing disproportion in the development of objective culture as against individual culture. Surrounded by the overpowering external force of institutions, the individual tends to atrophy. A lot of attention has been paid to the forms of self-creation. There has been a growth in the use of apparel and other small artifacts which utilize discourse to express something about their bearer's identity. This particular type of publicly displayed writing will be referred to as personal grafuitt. While in previous periods graffiti represented wall scribblings which generally proclaimed their author's existence, personal graffiti attempts to say something about its author's identity, his inner concerns. A stylus or sharp object is no longer needed for scratching; it has been superceded by spray paint and the felt-tip marker. The technology of mass production has also affected personal graffiti, with slogans and pictures preprinted on shirts, bumper stickers, etc. This technological advance, however, has not eliminated the opportunity for one to express his/her individuality.

This paper focuses on the Oscar winning television documentary ‘Scared Straight.’ This documentary describes the Juvenile Awareness Project (JAP) at Rahway State Prison in New Jersey, which attempts to deter juvenile delinquency by briefly exposing young offenders to the harsh realities of prison life. The paper analyzes the possible reasons for the popularity of this show and the JAP. It is suggested that factors such as the public perception of increasing crime rates, declining support for rehabilitation, and a dramatic promise of a new, synthetic solution for delinquency were among the major reasons for the success of the television documentary. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the linguistic and interactional features of the work done by practitioners of a deviant occupation, spiritual reading. Based on 42 transcriptions of such readings, we uncover the common elements of grammatical form and propositional content and the way readers use setting, self, and talk to make their visionary utterances more forceful. The successful accomplishment of a reading typically requires that the client be an active participant and that reader and client share a "common religion." [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
