Objective: Exposures at hairdressers' work have been reported to lead to an increased risk of several health outcomes. The present study aimed to investigate the relations between occupational exposures and respiratory symptoms and lung function among hairdressers in Iran. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study to compare potential respiratory effects among 140 women working as hairdressers to such effects among 140 women working as office workers (administrative personnel). Both groups worked in Shiraz, Iran. Respiratory symptoms were assessed by a standard respiratory questionnaire. The questionnaire also inquired about substances used and workspace conditions, including ventilation type. Lung function levels were measured by spirometry. Results: Respiratory symptoms, including cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness were significantly more frequent in hairdressers compared to the reference group (p < 0.05). After controlling for potential confounders, hairdressers had a prevalence ratio (PR) of 2.18 (95% CI 1.26–3.77) for cough, 9.59 (95% CI 1.004–91.73) for wheezing, 2.06 (95% CI 1.25–3.39) for shortness of breath, and 3.31 (95% CI 1.84–5.97) for chest tightness compared to the reference group. Lung function parameters (including VC, FVC, and FEV1) were significantly reduced in hairdressers (p < 0.001). Absence of air conditioning predicted greater reduction in lung function (p < 0.05) in the exposed. Decrease in FVC with normal FEV1/FVC in the exposed group suggested existence of restrictive lung function. Conclusions: This study provides evidence of increased prevalence of respiratory symptoms and restrictive lung function impairment among hairdressers in Iran. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[Display omitted] Oxidative stress and tissue damage (OSD) play a pivotal role as an early-stage process in chronic disease pathogenesis. However, there has been little research to better understand the temporal (χρόνος[chronos]) dimensions of OSD process associated with environmental (non-genetic, including behaviors/lifestyle) and/or occupational stressors, like night shift work. OSD processes have recently attracted attention in relation to time-resolved external stressor trajectories in personalized medicine (prevention) initiatives, as they seem to interact with circadian clock systems towards the improved delineation of the early stages of (chronic) disease process. This work critically reviewed human studies targeting the temporal dynamics of OSD and circadian clock system's activity in response to environmental/occupational stressors; the case of night shift work was examined. Being a key stressor influencing OSD processes and circadian rhythm, night shift work was evaluated as part of a scoping review of research in OSD, including inflammatory and metabolic processes to determine the extent of OSD research undertaken in human populations, methodologies, tools and biomarkers used and the extent that the temporal dimensions of exposure and biological effect(s) were accounted for. Online databases were searched for papers published from 2000 onwards, resulting in the selection of 53 original publications. The majority of studies (n = 41) took place in occupational settings, while the rest were conducted in the general population or patient groups. Most occupational studies targeted outcomes of oxidative stress/damage (n = 19), followed by the combination of OSD with inflammatory response (n = 10), and studies focused on metabolic outcomes (n = 12). Only a minor fraction of the studies measured biomarkers related to circadian rhythm, such as, melatonin, its metabolite, or cortisol. Night shift work was associated with select biomarkers of OSD and inflammation, albeit with mixed results. Although much progress in delineating the biological mechanisms of OSD process has been made, an equally thorough investigation on the temporal trajectory of OSD processes as triggered by environmental/occupational stressors in human studies has yet to fully evolve. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an important disease worldwide characterized by chronically poor airflow. The economic burden of COPD on any society can be enormous if not managed. We applied the approach proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO) using the AirQ2.2.3 software developed by the WHO European Center for Environment and Health on air pollutants in Tabriz (Iran) (2011–2012 year). A 1h average of concentrations of ozone (O 3 ), daily average concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) and sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) were used to assess human exposure and health effect in terms of attributable proportion of the health outcome and annual number of excess cases of Hospital Admissions for COPD (HA COPD). The results of this study showed that 2% (95% CI: 0.8–3.1%) of HA COPD were attributed to O 3 concentrations over 10 μg/m 3 . In addition, 0.7 % (95% CI: 0.1–1.8%) and 0.5% (95% CI: 0–1%) of HA COPD were attributed to NO 2 and SO 2 concentrations over 10 μg/m 3 respectively. In this study, we have shown that O 3 , NO 2 and SO 2 have a significant impact on COPD hospitalization. Given these results the policy decisions are needed in order to reduce the chronic pulmonary diseases caused by air pollution and furthermore better quantification studies are recommended. In the present paper, the removal of ethidium bromide (EtBr) from aqueous solutions in a batch system using natural (NP) and aluminium-coated pumice (ACP) as alternative low-cost adsorbents was investigated. The maximum adsorption capacity, q m (mg/g) was 58.82 and 76.92 mg/g for NP and ACP, respectively, operating at an initial pH of 8, an adsorbent dose of 8 g/L, a contact time of 210 min and an initial EtBr concentration of 30 mg/L. The equilibrium data of both adsorbents fitted the Freundlich isotherm model, indicating the heterogeneity of the adsorbent surface. In addition, the adsorption rate of both adsorbents was well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. This indicated chemisorption was the rate-controlling step of the adsorption process which occurred by ion exchange. Within the performed study, a three-layer artificial neural network (ANN) model was also developed to predict the efficiency of EtBr removal. Computational results clearly demonstrated that the ANN model was able to predict the combined effect of initial pH, adsorbent dose, contact time and initial EtBr concentration on the adsorption efficiency with a very high determination coefficient ( R 2 = 0.998) and a low relative error (RE = 0.037). This paper explores the possibility of employing Oxidized Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNT-COOH) for the removal of toxic Linear Alkyl benzene Sulfonate (LAS). LAS is among the most toxic industrial and house hold waste surfactants. This study discusses the feasibility of removing LAS from aqueous solutions using MWCNT-COOH. The effects of operational parameters such as solution pH, LAS concentration and contact time on the removal of LAS were studied. The four linear forms of Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin Radushkevich (D-R) and Temkin models were applied to determine the best fit of equilibrium expressions. Our results showed that the experimental adsorption isotherm complies with Freundlich model. The maximum adsorption capacity was determined to be 62.5 mg/g with an initial LAS concentration of 4 mg/L at pH 3 in 45 min. Fitting of the experimental results to kinetic models showed the relevance of the pseudo second-order (R 2 > 0.99) model for LAS. Activated carbons prepared from walnut and poplar woods are used as economical adsorbents for the rapid removal and fast adsorption of Acid Red 18 dye from the aqueous solutions; the kinetics, isotherm and thermodynamics studies of the process were well investigated and elucidated. The adsorption phenomenon may be possibly attributed to the formation of various binding bonds between the activated carbons, developed from the poplar and walnut woods, surface and the dye molecules; adsorption may firstly take place on the external surface of the developed adsorbent i.e. activated carbon developed from the walnut and poplar wood particles, where the attached functional groups play a crucial role in the rapid removal and fast adsorption. Secondly, adsorption may take place on the entire surface, which leads to a uniform distribution of adsorbed Acid Red 18 molecules onto the developed adsorbents. Forces that are responsible for the main adsorption mechanism are π–π attraction between Acid Red 18 dye molecules and the C C bonds of the developed adsorbents. Consequently, at least three types of adsorption sites might occur on the adsorbent surface; these are basal plane, edge plane and micropores. Neither pseudo-first order kinetic model nor pseudo-second order kinetic model was able to describe the adsorption process of AR18 molecules onto the activated carbon from poplar wood. Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning is one of the most common causes of death in Iran. The present study investigated the indoor and outdoor CO concentrations at hospitals under the supervision of Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences in Sari, Iran. Indoor and outdoor measured CO were conducted over a period of one month during the 2012 winter season in 4 hospital kitchens using a direct measurement device specialized for CO. The average concentrations of CO gas through gas measuring stations were considered at three stations both in and out of the kitchens. The highest and the lowest average concentrations of outdoor CO in Fatemeh Zahra Hospital (about 2 ppm) and Zare Hospital (about 0.33 ppm) were measured respectively. Besides, the highest and the lowest average concentrations of indoor CO were detected in Imam Hospital (as 9.66 ppm) and BuAli Hospital (as7.66 ppm). The highest ratios of I/O (approximately 10 ppm) have been conducted between 8:00 and 9:00a.m. The lowest median concentrations of CO (approximately 8 ppm) between 11:00 and 12:00 a.m. have been measured. Concentrations of CO in all hospitals in this study were significant. This fact shows poorly ventilation of kitchen due to lack of ventilation design engineering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to investigate the applicability of the adsorption process for the removal of organophosphorus pesticide malathion 57% from water by using multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The impact of various experimental conditions such as pH, quantity of adsorbent, concentration of pesticides, contact time and temperature was studied and optimized for the maximum removal of malathion. Unlike conventional optimization, a limited number of experiments (26 steps) were performed in a cost-effective manner for different independent variables such as MWCNTs concentration (0.1–0.5 g/L), the malathion (57%) concentration (6 mg/L and 10 mg/L), contact time (2–30 min) and pH (neutral range). Based on the experimental data obtained in a lab-scale batch study, a three-factor response surface modeling (RSM) approach was implemented in order to optimize the conditions for maximum removal of malathion, and compare experimental results with standardized malathion samples. The optimized conditions to achieve the maximum removal of malathion (100%) were determined to be a malathion concentration of 6 mg/L, an initial MWCNTs concentration of 0.5 g/L, and a contact time of 30 min. Findings of this study clearly indicated that 100% of the malathion could be cost-effectively removed by MWCNTs in conditions predicted by the proposed optimization methodology. This study was conducted to determine the concentration of airborne respirable crystalline silica (ARCS) particles and to evaluate its risk level among workers employed in eight different workplaces in Iran. They included sandblasting operations, ceramic production, sand and gravel work, brick production, asphalt manufacturing, foundry operation, glass making, and stone cutting. Personal exposure to ARCS was measured in randomly selected samples from each workplace. The maximum and minimum average of ARCS concentration in the eight workplaces were observed in foundry operation (0.338 ± 0.110 mg/m3) and glass manufacturing (0.125 ± 0.093 mg/m3), respectively. The average concentration of ARCS in all assessed working conditions were higher than the permitted limit of occupational contact recommended by Technical Committee of the Iranian Ministry of Health, treatment and medical education (0.025 mg/m3). Azinphos-methyl and chlorpyrifos are the organophosphorous pesticides which pose serious threats to the environment including their detrimental effect on humans and, therefore, their removal from the environment is a must. Hence, in the present paper the ultrasound technique was applied to remove the above-mentioned hazardous compounds. For this, the effect of influential parameters such as pH, initial pesticide concentration, frequency, electric power and treatment time on the ultrasound degradation of azinphos-methyl and chlorpyrifos was well investigated and elucidated. The results obtained showed that azinphos-methyl and chlorpyrifos were effectively and rapidly degraded by the ultrasound technique. Thus, the operating optimal conditions (initial pH 9, initial pesticide concentration 1 mg/L, frequency 130 kHz, electric power 500 W and treatment time 20 min) lead to a degradation of 78.50% for azinphos-methyl and of 98.96% for chlorpyrifos with in 20 min of contact time. Two multiple regression-based equations were derived to describe the degradation process of the pesticides by the ultrasound treatment. In the present study, defluoridation study of liquid phase with the help of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were well investigated and elucidated. The impact of different experimental conditions such as solution pH, initial fluoride concentration, adsorbent dose, and contact time was well studied and optimized for the maximum fluoride removal from water. The experimental data were fitted by the Freundlich, Langmuir and Dubinin–Radushkevich (D–R) isotherm models and the related equilibrium constants were calculated. The results of the isotherm studies showed that fluoride removal by both adsorbents followed the Freundlich isotherm model. Kinetic studies were conducted and the results demonstrated that the experimental data were fitted well with the pseudo-second order kinetic model. Furthermore, two multiple regression-based equations were also derived to model the removal of fluoride from aqueous solutions by the carbon nanotubes. This study demonstrated that the polynomial equations satisfactorily described the behavior of the present defluoridation process for both MWCNTs ( R 2 = 0.913) and SWCNTs ( R 2 = 0.941). The adsorption capacity of two efficient adsorbents namely MWCNTs and SWCNTs for the rapid removal of noxious Cr (VI) ion from the polluted aqueous source was well studied and investigated. The impact of several influential parameters such as contact time, initial pH, initial Cr (VI) ion concentrations and the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent in the presence of competing anion was well elucidated and optimized. It was observed that the removal of efficiency of Cr (VI) ion depends on the pH of solution and the maximum efficiency was noticed at pH 2.5. Furthermore, the uptake of Cr (VI) ion was hindered in the presence of the competing anion, SO 4 2− . Experimental equilibrium data were fitted to four different isotherm models by linear regression method, however, the adsorption equilibrium data were well interpreted by the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cr (VI) ion by MWCNTs and SWCNTs was 1.26 and 2.35 mg/g respectively, which is calculated by the Langmuir isotherm model. Kinetic studies are well suited and found in good agreement with pseudo-second order. The results evidently indicated that MWCNTs and SWCNTs would be suitable adsorbents for Cr (VI) ion in wastewater under specific conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
