Abstract

The question of how to bridge virtuality and reality intensified in 2016 with the release of several consumer products. The article begins by reviewing two anxieties about virtual reality raised at a 1999 conference. To address these anxieties, the paper draws on post-Jungian archetypal psychology (James Hillman, Thomas Moore) and the retrieval of Renaissance theology (Marsilio Ficino). Two experiences with Samsung Gear VR then illustrate how classic archetypal elements can contribute to active procedures for bridging the virtual and the real.

Abstract

Graphene oxide can be used as a precursor to graphene but the quality of graphene flakes is highly heterogeneous. Scanning-Raman-Microscopy (SRM) is used to characterize films of graphene derived from flakes of graphene oxide with an almost intact carbon framework (ai-GO). The defect density of these flakes is visualized in detail by analyzing the intensity and full-width at half-maximum of the most pronounced Raman peaks. In addition, we superimpose the SRM results with AFM images and correlate the spectroscopic results with the morphology. Furthermore, we use SRM technique to display the amount of defects in a film of graphene. Thus, an area of 250 x 250 {\my}m2 of graphene is probed with a step-size increment of 1 {\mu}m. We are able to visualize the position of graphene flakes, edges and the substrate. Finally, we alter parameters of measurement to analyze the quality of graphene fast and reliable. The described method can be used to probe and visualize the quality of graphene films.

Abstract

School leaders are increasingly coming under the gun of accountability, and this monograph is designed to help leaders think about, understand, and respond thoughtfully and effectively to the increasing demands for accountability in education. It provides a comprehensive and rather sophisticated set of concepts and insights into accountability that will assist them in working with staff, in building collaborative relationships with others within the department, and with external partners, and in contending with critics. The school principal, as the primary leader and chief executive officer of the school, bears the brunt of the responsibility to ensure that demands for school accountability--whether externally or internally generated--are adequately met. While this monograph is not a "how to" manual, it does offer a sound conceptual foundation for accountability from which school leaders should be able to produce the practical "how to's" of accountability. Abstract

Czech writer Ivan Klima investigates the connections between fiction and history, how these seemingly different areas of inquiry bleed into one another, especially in times of political turmoil. Fiction can be informed by history, and history can be made fictional, when subjected to the influence of writers constrained by repressive government, governments or individuals working to justify regimes, or poets seeking to stretch the boundaries of what it is possible to speak. The main paper is followed by a discussion of Ivan Klima with Michael Heim, Czeslaw Milosz and Martina Moravcova of literature in post-Communist Central Europe, and a vignette written by Klima about his residency in Berkeley.

31. Shifting Focus: From Books to Laptops to Face-to-Face Discussion

Abstract

Contemporary innovations in education tend to be information based or computer driven. A complete curriculum, however, needs flexibility in order to foster skills for shifting from one context to another. Face-to-face skills play an important role in the governance of democratic societies, and "having a good understanding" of something involves the ability to communicate what is known. The dominant cognitive model of information (information and communications technology) should not weaken the human skills that belong to a full education. Computers need to be seen in a broad educational context. The iClass project and the No-Laptop policy described in this article show two different but related ways of acknowledging the limitations of the modern information paradigm. These two postmodern approaches share a critical distance from computers so as to customize information for specific learning situations. While engaging with computers, educators should weigh specific practices and ask how, and under what circumstances, computers actually contribute to a learning situation.
