The three-dimensional galaxy power spectrum is a powerful probe of primordial non-Gaussianity and additional general relativistic (GR) effects on large scales, which can be constrained by the current and upcoming large-scale structure surveys. In this work, we calculate the linear-order relativistic power spectrum in the spherical Fourier-Bessel (SFB) basis, a coordinate system that preserves the geometry of the curved sky and fully accounts for the wide-angle effect. In particular, we model the GR effects present in the discrete SFB power spectrum, which is a more efficient and stable decomposition of the galaxy density field compared to the continuous SFB basis in the presence of radial windows. To validate our GR calculations, we introduce a mapping between the angular power spectrum and the SFB power spectrum, and we compare our calculations with outputs from CLASS. We discuss the rich pattern of GR effects in the SFB basis and compare the GR effects to the local primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG) effect. The Doppler and lensing effects have different angular and Fourier dependence compared to the PNG in the SFB basis, while the gravitational potential term is more degenerate with the PNG and comparable to a signal of $f_{\rm NL}\sim 1$. SPHEREx, the Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and ices Explorer, is a NASA MIDEX mission planned for launch in 2024. SPHEREx will carry out the first all-sky spectral survey at wavelengths between 0.75 micron and 5 micron with spectral resolving power ~40 between 0.75 and 3.8 micron and ~120 between 3.8 and 5 micron At the end of its two-year mission, SPHEREx will provide 0.75-to-5 micron spectra of each 6.2"x6.2" pixel on the sky - 14 billion spectra in all. This paper updates an earlier description of SPHEREx presenting changes made during the mission's Preliminary Design Phase, including a discussion of instrument integration and test and a summary of the data processing, analysis, and distribution plans.

The three-dimensional galaxy power spectrum is a powerful probe of primordial non-Gaussianity and additional general relativistic effects, which become important on large scales. At the same time, wide-angle (WA) effects due to differing lines-of-sight (LOS) on the curved sky also become important with large angular separation. In this work, we accurately model WA and Doppler effects using the spherical Fourier-Bessel (SFB) formalism, before transforming the result into the commonly used power spectrum multipoles (PSM). This mapping from the SFB power spectrum to PSM represents a new way to non-perturbatively model WA and GR effects present in the PSM, which we validate with log-normal mocks. Moreover, for the first time, we can compute the analytical PSM Gaussian covariance on large scales, exactly including WA-induced mode-couplings, without resorting to any plane-parallel approximations., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures. As galaxy redshift surveys expand to larger areas on the sky, effects coming from the curved nature of the sky become important, introducing wide-angle (WA) corrections to the power spectrum multipoles at large galaxy-pair separations. These corrections particularly impact the measurement of physical effects that are predominantly detected on large scales, such the local primordial non-Gaussianities. In this paper, we examine the validity of the perturbative approach to modeling WA effects in the power spectrum multipoles for upcoming surveys by comparing to measurements on simulated galaxy catalogs using the Yamamoto estimator. We show that on the scales $k \lesssim 2\pi/\chi$, where $\chi$ is the comoving distance to the galaxies, the estimated power spectrum monopole differs by up to $5\%$ from the second-order perturbative result, with similar absolute deviations for higher multipoles. To enable precision comparison, we pioneer an improved treatment of the $\mu$-leakage effects in the Yamamoto estimator. Additionally, we devise a solution to include $f_{\rm NL}$ in the perturbative WA calculations, avoiding divergences in the original framework through the integral constraint. This allows us to conclude that WA effects can mimic a $f_{\rm NL}\sim5$ signal in the lowest SPHEREx redshift bin. We recommend using non-perturbative methods to model large scale power spectrum multipoles for $f_{\rm NL}$ measurements. The bispectrum, the three-point correlation in Fourier space, is a crucial statistic for studying many effects targeted by the next-generation galaxy surveys, such as primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG) and general relativistic (GR) effects on large scales. In this work we develop a formalism for the bispectrum in the Spherical Fourier-Bessel (SFB) basis - a natural basis for computing correlation functions on the curved sky, as it diagonalizes the Laplacian operator in spherical coordinates. Working in the SFB basis allows for line-of-sight effects such as redshift space distortions (RSD) and GR to be accounted for exactly, i.e without having to resort to perturbative expansions to go beyond the plane-parallel approximation. Only analytic results for the SFB bispectrum exist in the literature given the intensive computations needed. We numerically calculate the SFB bispectrum for the first time, enabled by a few techniques: We implement a template decomposition of the redshift-space kernel $Z_2$ into Legendre polynomials, and separately treat the PNG and velocity-divergence terms. We derive an identity to integrate a product of three spherical harmonics connected by a Dirac delta function as a simple sum, and use it to investigate the limit of a homogeneous and isotropic Universe. Moreover, we present a formalism for convolving the signal with separable window functions, and use a toy spherically symmetric window to demonstrate the computation and give insights into the properties of the observed bispectrum signal. While our implementation remains computationally challenging, it is a step toward a feasible full extraction of information on large scales via a SFB bispectrum analysis., Comment: 32 pages, 6 figures

The bispectrum is an important statistics helpful for measuring the primordial non-Gaussianity parameter $f_{\mathrm{NL}}$ to less than order unity in error, which would allow us to distinguish between single and multi-field inflation models. The Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer (SPHEREx) mission is particularly well-suited for making this measurement with its $\sim$100-band all-sky observations in the near-infrared. Consequently, the SPHEREx data will contain galaxies with spectroscopic-like redshift measurements as well as those with much larger errors. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of photometric redshift errors on $f_{\mathrm{NL}}$ constraints in the context of an updated multi-tracer forecast for SPHEREx, finding that the azimuthal averages of the first three even bispectrum multipoles are no longer sufficient for capturing most of the information (as opposed to the case of spectroscopic surveys shown in the literature). The final SPHEREx result with all five galaxy samples and six redshift bins is however not severely impacted because the total result is dominated by the samples with the best redshift errors, while the worse samples serve to reduce cosmic variance. Our fiducial result of $\sigma_{f_{\mathrm{NL}}} = 0.7$ from bispectrum alone is increased by $18\%$ and $3\%$ when using $l_{\mathrm{max}}=0$ and 2 respectively. We also explore the impact on parameter constraints when varying the fiducial redshift errors, as well as using subsets of multi-tracer combinations or triangles with different squeezing factors. Note that the fiducial result here is not the final SPHEREx capability, which is still on target for being $\sigma_{f_{\mathrm{NL}}} = 0.5$ once the power spectrum will be included., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is capable of delivering an unprecedented all-sky, high-spatial resolution, multi-epoch infrared map to the astronomical community. This opportunity arises in the midst of numerous ground- and space-based surveys that will provide extensive spectroscopy and imaging together covering the entire sky (such as Rubin/LSST, Euclid, UNIONS, SPHEREx, DESI, SDSS-V, GALAH, 4MOST, WEAVE, MOONS, PFS, UVEX, NEO Surveyor, etc.). Roman can uniquely provide uniform high-spatial-resolution (~0.1 arcsec) imaging over the entire sky, vastly expanding the science reach and precision of all of these near-term and future surveys. This imaging will not only enhance other surveys, but also facilitate completely new science. By imaging the full sky over two epochs, Roman can measure the proper motions for stars across the entire Milky Way, probing 100 times fainter than Gaia out to the very edge of the Galaxy. Here, we propose NANCY: a completely public, all-sky survey that will create a high-value legacy dataset benefiting innumerable ongoing and forthcoming studies of the universe. NANCY is a pure expression of Roman's potential: it images the entire sky, at high spatial resolution, in a broad infrared bandpass that collects as many photons as possible. The next-generation CMB experiments are expected to constrain the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ with high precision. Delensing is an important process as the observed CMB $B$-mode polarization that contains the primordial tensor perturbation signal is dominated by a much larger contribution due to gravitational lensing. To do so successfully, it is useful to explore methods for lensing reconstruction beyond the traditional quadratic estimator (QE) (which will become suboptimal for the next-generation experiments), and the maximum a posterior estimator (which is still currently under development). In Caldeira et al. 2020, the authors showed that a neural network (NN) method using the ResUNet architectrue performs better than the QE and slightly suboptimally compared to the iterative estimator in terms of the lensing reconstruction performance. In this work, we take one step further to evaluate the delensing performance of these estimators on maps with primordial tensor perturbations using a standard delensing pipeline, and show that the \emph{delensing} performance of the NN estimator is optimal, agreeing with that of a converged iterative estimator, when tested on a suite of simulations with $r=0.01$ and $r=0.001$ for $12.7^{\circ} \times 12.7^{\circ}$ maps at a CMB-Stage~4 like polarization noise level $1\,\mu \rm{K\,arcmin}$ and 1' beam. Relativistic and free-streaming particles like neutrinos leave imprints in large scale structures (LSS), providing probes of the effective number of neutrino species $N_{\rm eff}$. In this paper, we use the Fisher formalism to forecast $N_{\rm eff}$ constraints from the bispectrum (B) of LSS for current and future galaxy redshift surveys, specifically using information from the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs). Modeling the galaxy bispectrum at the tree-level, we find that adding the bispectrum constraints to current CMB constraints from Planck can improve upon the Planck-only constraints on $N_{\rm eff}$ by about 10\% -- 40\% depending on the survey. Compared to the Planck + power spectrum (P) constraints previously explored in the literature, using Planck+P+B provides a further improvement of about 5\% -- 30\%. Besides using BAO wiggles alone, we also explore using the total information which includes both the wiggles and the broadband information (which is subject to systematics challenges), generally yielding better results. Finally, we exploit the interference feature of the BAOs in the bispectrum to select a subset of triangles with the most information on $N_{\rm eff}$. This allows for the reduction of computational cost while keeping most of the information, as well as for circumventing some of the shortcomings of applying directly to the bispectrum the current wiggle extraction algorithm valid for the power spectrum. In sum, our study validates that the current Planck constraint on $N_{\rm eff}$ can be significantly improved with the aid of galaxy surveys before the next-generation CMB experiments like CMB-Stage 4., Comment: Revised version matching the publication

We explore synergies between the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope and CMB lensing data to constrain dark energy and modified gravity scenarios. A simulated likelihood analysis of the galaxy clustering and weak lensing data from the Roman Space Telescope High Latitude Survey combined with CMB lensing data from the Simons Observatory is undertaken, marginalizing over important astrophysical effects and calibration uncertainties. Included in the modeling are the effects of baryons on small-scale clustering, scale-dependent growth suppression by neutrinos, as well as uncertainties in the galaxy clustering biases, in the intrinsic alignment contributions to the lensing signal, in the redshift distributions, and in the galaxy shape calibration. The addition of CMB lensing roughly doubles the dark energy figure-of-merit from Roman photometric survey data alone, varying from a factor of 1.7 to 2.4 improvement depending on the particular Roman survey configuration. Alternatively, the inclusion of CMB lensing information can compensate for uncertainties in the Roman galaxy shape calibration if it falls below the design goals. Furthermore, we report the first forecast of Roman constraints on a model-independent structure growth, parameterized by $\sigma_8 (z)$, and on the Hu-Sawicki f(R) gravity as well as an improved forecast of the phenomenological $(\Sigma_0,\mu_0)$ model. We find that CMB lensing plays a crucial role in constraining $\sigma_8(z)$ at z>2, with percent-level constraints forecasted out to z=4. CMB lensing information does not improve constraints on the f(R) models substantially. It does, however, increase the $(\Sigma_0,\mu_0)$ figure-of-merit by a factor of about 1.5., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, replaced with accepted version in MNRAS

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will conduct a High Latitude Spectroscopic Survey (HLSS) over a large volume at high redshift, using the near-IR grism (1.0-1.93 $\mu$m, $R=435-865$) and the 0.28 deg$^2$ wide field camera. We present a reference HLSS which maps 2000 deg$^2$ and achieves an emission line flux limit of 10$^{-16}$ erg/s/cm$^2$ at 6.5$\sigma$, requiring $\sim$0.6 yrs of observing time. We summarize the flowdown of the Roman science objectives to the science and technical requirements of the HLSS. We construct a mock redshift survey over the full HLSS volume by applying a semi-analytic galaxy formation model to a cosmological N-body simulation, and use this mock survey to create pixel-level simulations of 4 deg$^2$ of HLSS grism spectroscopy. We find that the reference HLSS would measure $\sim$ 10 million H$\alpha$ galaxy redshifts that densely map large scale structure at $z=1-2$ and 2 million [OIII] galaxy redshifts that sparsely map structures at $z=2-3$. We forecast the performance of this survey for measurements of the cosmic expansion history with baryon acoustic oscillations and the growth of large scale structure with redshift space distortions. We also study possible deviations from the reference design, and find that a deep HLSS at $f_{\rm line}>7\times10^{-17}$erg/s/cm$^2$ over 4000 deg$^2$ (requiring $\sim$1.5 yrs of observing time) provides the most compelling stand-alone constraints on dark energy from Roman alone. This provides a useful reference for future optimizations. We release RELIKE (Reionization Effective Likelihood), a fast and accurate effective likelihood code based on the latest Planck 2018 data that allows one constrain any model for reionization between $6 < z < 30$ using five constraints from the CMB reionization principal components (PC). We tested the code on two example models which showed excellent agreement with sampling the exact Planck likelihoods using either a simple Gaussian PC likelihood or its full kernel density estimate. This code enables a fast and consistent means for combining Planck constraints with other reionization data sets, such as kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effects, line-intensity mapping, luminosity function, star formation history, quasar spectra, etc, where the redshift dependence of the ionization history is important. Since the PC technique tests any reionization history in the given range, we also derive model-independent constraints for the total Thomson optical depth $\tau_{\rm PC} = 0.0619^{+0.0056}_{-0.0068}$ and its $15\le z \le 30$ high redshift component $\tau_{\rm PC}(15, 30) < 0.020 $ (95\% C.L.). The upper limits on the high-redshift optical depth is a factor of $\sim3$ larger than those reported in the Planck 2018 cosmological parameter paper using the FlexKnot method and we validate our results with a direct analysis of a two-step model which permits this small high-$z$ component., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures

One major goal of upcoming large-scale-structure surveys is to constrain dark energy and modified gravity theories. In particular, galaxy clustering and gravitational lensing convergence are probes sensitive to modifications of general relativity. While the standard analysis for these surveys typically includes power spectra or 2-point correlation functions, it is known that the bispectrum contains more information, and could offer improved constraints on parameters when combined with the power spectra. However, the use of bispectra has been limited so far to one single probe, e.g. the lensing convergence bispectrum or the galaxy bispectrum. In this paper, we extend the formalism to explore the power of cross-bispectra between different probes, and exploit their ability to break parameter degeneracies and improve constraints. We study this on a test case of lensing convergence and galaxy density auto- and cross-bispectra, for a particular sub-class of Horndeski theories parametrized by $c_M$ and $c_B$. Using the 2000 deg$^2$ notional survey of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope with overlapping photometry from the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time, we find that a joint power spectra and bispectra analysis with three redshift bins at $l_{\rm max} = 1000$ yields $\sigma_{c_M} = 1.0$ and $\sigma_{c_B} = 0.3$, both a factor of $\sim$1.2 better than the power spectra results; this would be further improved to $\sigma_{c_M} = 0.7$ and $\sigma_{c_B} = 0.2$ if $l_{\rm max} = 3000$ is taken. Furthermore, we find that using all possible cross-bispectra between the two probes in different tomographic bins improves upon auto-bispectra results by a factor of 1.3 in $\sigma_{c_M}$, 1.1 in $\sigma_{c_B}$ and 1.3 in $\sigma_{\Omega_m}$. We simulate the scientific performance of the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) High Latitude Survey (HLS) on dark energy and modified gravity. The 1.6 year HLS Reference survey is currently envisioned to image 2000 deg$^2$ in multiple bands to a depth of $\sim$26.5 in Y, J, H and to cover the same area with slit-less spectroscopy beyond z=3. The combination of deep, multi-band photometry and deep spectroscopy will allow scientists to measure the growth and geometry of the Universe through a variety of cosmological probes (e.g., weak lensing, galaxy clusters, galaxy clustering, BAO, Type Ia supernova) and, equally, it will allow an exquisite control of observational and astrophysical systematic effects. In this paper we explore multi-probe strategies that can be implemented given WFIRST's instrument capabilities. We model cosmological probes individually and jointly and account for correlated systematics and statistical uncertainties due to the higher order moments of the density field. We explore different levels of observational systematics for the WFIRST survey (photo-z and shear calibration) and ultimately run a joint likelihood analysis in N-dim parameter space. We find that the WFIRST reference survey alone (no external data sets) can achieve a standard dark energy FoM of >300 when including all probes. This assumes no information from external data sets and realistic assumptions for systematics. Our study of the HLS reference survey should be seen as part of a future community driven effort to simulate and optimize the science return of WFIRST., Comment: comments welcome

We explore synergies between the space-based Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) and the ground-based Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). In particular, we consider a scenario where the currently envisioned survey strategy for WFIRST's High Latitude Survey (HLS), i.e., 2000 square degrees in four narrow photometric bands is altered in favor of a strategy that combines rapid coverage of the LSST area (to full LSST depth) in one band. We find that a 5-month WFIRST survey in the W-band can cover the full LSST survey area providing high-resolution imaging for >95% of the LSST Year 10 gold galaxy sample. We explore a second, more ambitious scenario where WFIRST spends 1.5 years covering the LSST area. For this second scenario we quantify the constraining power on dark energy equation of state parameters from a joint weak lensing and galaxy clustering analysis, and compare it to an LSST-only survey and to the Reference WFIRST HLS survey. Our survey simulations are based on the WFIRST exposure time calculator and redshift distributions from the CANDELS catalog. Our statistical uncertainties account for higher-order correlations of the density field, and we include a wide range of systematic effects, such as uncertainties in shape and redshift measurements, and modeling uncertainties of astrophysical systematics, such as galaxy bias, intrinsic galaxy alignment, and baryonic physics. Assuming the 5-month WFIRST wide scenario, we find a significant increase in constraining power for the joint LSST+WFIRST wide survey compared to LSST Y10 (FoM(Wwide)= 2.4 FoM(LSST)) and compared to LSST+WFIRST HLS (FoM(Wwide)= 5.5 FoM(HLS))., Comment: added references, comments welcome

Compensated isocurvature perturbations (CIPs) are opposite spatial fluctuations in the baryon and dark matter density. They can be generated for example in the curvaton model in the early Universe but are difficult to observe because their gravitational imprint nearly cancels. We therefore propose a new measurement method by searching for a spatial modulation of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale that CIPs induce. We find that for a Euclid-like survey the sensitivity is marginally better than the WMAP cosmic microwave background (CMB) constraint, which exploits the CIP-induced modulation of the CMB sound horizon. For a cosmic-variance limited BAO survey using emission-line galaxies up to $z\sim7$ the sensitivity is between stage 3 and stage 4 CMB experiments. These results include using CIP-galaxy cross-correlations, which improves the sensitivity by a factor of $\sim2-3$ for correlated CIPs. The method could be further improved with an optimal estimator, similarly to the CMB, and could provide a useful cross-check of other CIP probes. Finally, if CIPs exist, they can bias cosmological measurements made assuming no CIPs. In particular, they can act as a super-sample fluctuation of the baryon density and bias measurements of the BAO scale. For modern BAO surveys, the largest 2$\sigma$ CIP fluctuation allowed by Planck's 95\% bound could bias BAO measurements of $H(z)$ by 2.2\%, partially reducing the tension with the local $H_0$ measurements from 3.1$\sigma$ to 2.3$\sigma$., Comment: Fixed mismatch of arxiv abstract vs pdf in previous version. 16 pages, 4 figures

The Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) is a 2.4m space telescope with a 0.281 deg^2 field of view for near-IR imaging and slitless spectroscopy and a coronagraph designed for > 10^8 starlight suppresion. As background information for Astro2020 white papers, this article summarizes the current design and anticipated performance of WFIRST. While WFIRST does not have the UV imaging/spectroscopic capabilities of the Hubble Space Telescope, for wide field near-IR surveys WFIRST is hundreds of times more efficient. Some of the most ambitious multi-cycle HST Treasury programs could be executed as routine General Observer (GO) programs on WFIRST. The large area and time-domain surveys planned for the cosmology and exoplanet microlensing programs will produce extraordinarily rich data sets that enable an enormous range of Archival Research (AR) investigations. Requirements for the coronagraph are defined based on its status as a technology demonstration, but its expected performance will enable unprecedented observations of nearby giant exoplanets and circumstellar disks. Cosmic acceleration is the most surprising cosmological discovery in many decades. Testing and distinguishing among possible explanations requires cosmological measurements of extremely high precision probing the full history of cosmic expansion and structure growth and, ideally, compare and contrast matter and relativistic tracers of the gravity potential. This program is one of the defining objectives of the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), as set forth in the New Worlds, New Horizons report (NWNH) in 2010. The WFIRST mission has the ability to improve these measurements by 1-2 orders of magnitude compared to the current state of the art, while simultaneously extending their redshift grasp, greatly improving control of systematic effects, and taking a unified approach to multiple probes that provide complementary physical information and cross-checks of cosmological results. We describe in this annual report the activities of the Science Investigation Team (SIT) "Cosmology with the High Latitude Survey (HLS)" during the year 2017. This team was selected by NASA in December 2015 in order to address the stringent challenges of the WFIRST dark energy (DE) program through the Project's formulation phase. This SIT has elected to jointly address Galaxy Redshift Survey, Weak Lensing and Cluster Growth and thus fully embrace the fact that the imaging and spectroscopic elements of the HLS will be realized as an integrated observing program, and they jointly impose requirements on performance and operations. WFIRST is designed to be able to deliver a definitive result on the origin of cosmic acceleration. It is not optimized for Figure of Merit sensitivity but for control of systematic uncertainties and for having multiple techniques each with multiple cross-checks. Features during inflation and reionization leave corresponding features in the temperature and polarization power spectra that could potentially explain anomalies in the Planck 2015 data but require a joint analysis to disentangle. We study the interplay between these two effects using a model-independent parametrization of the inflationary power spectrum and the ionization history. Preference for a sharp suppression of large scale power is driven by a feature in the temperature power spectrum at multipoles $\ell \sim 20$, whereas preference for a component of high redshift ionization is driven by a sharp excess of polarization power at $\ell \sim 10$ when compared with the lowest multipoles. Marginalizing inflationary freedom does not weaken the preference for $z \gtrsim 10$ ionization, whereas marginalizing reionization freedom slightly enhances the preference for an inflationary feature but can also mask its direct signature in polarization. We study the relationship between signatures of high redshift ionization in large-angle CMB polarization power spectra and features in the Planck 2015 data. Using a principal component (PC) ionization basis that is complete to the cosmic variance limit out to $z_{\rm max}=30,40,50$, we find a robust $>95\%$ CL preference for ionization at $z>15$ with no preference for $z>40$. This robustness originates from the $\ell \sim 10$ region of the data which show high power relative to $\ell \le 8$ and result in a poor fit to a steplike model of reionization. Instead by allowing for high redshift reionization, the PCs provide a better fit by $2\Delta \mathrm{ln}\mathcal{L} = 5-6$. Due to a degeneracy in the ionization redshift response, this improved fit is due to a single aspect of the model: the ability to accommodate $z>10$ component to the ionization as we illustrate with a two-step reionization model. For this and other models that accommodate such a component, its presence is allowed and even favored; for models that do not, their poor fit reflects statistical or systematic fluctuations. Compensated isocurvature perturbations are opposite spatial fluctuations in the baryon and dark matter (DM) densities. They arise in the curvaton model and some models of baryogenesis. While the gravitational effects of baryon fluctuations are compensated by those of DM, leaving no observable impacts on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) at first order, they modulate the sound horizon at recombination, thereby correlating CMB anisotropies at different multipoles. As a result, CIPs can be reconstructed using quadratic estimators similarly to CMB detection of gravitational lensing. Because of these similarities, however, the CIP estimators are biased with lensing contributions that must be subtracted. These lensing contributions for CMB polarization measurement of CIPs are found to roughly triple the noise power of the total CIP estimator on large scales. In addition, the cross power with temperature and $E$-mode polarization are contaminated by lensing-ISW (integrated Sachs-Wolfe) correlations and reionization-lensing correlations respectively. For a cosmic-variance-limited (CVL) temperature and polarization experiment measuring out to multipoles $l_{\max} = 2500$, the lensing noise raises the detection threshold by a factor of 1.5, leaving a $2.7\sigma$ detection possible for the maximal CIP signal in the curvaton model., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

We explore the relationship between features in the Planck 2015 temperature and polarization data, shifts in the cosmological parameters, and features from inflation. Residuals in the temperature data at low multipole $\ell$, which are responsible for the high $H_0\approx 70$ km s$^{-1}$Mpc$^{-1}$ and low $\sigma_8\Omega_m^{1/2}$ values from $\ell<1000$ in power-law $\Lambda$CDM models, are better fit to inflationary features with a $1.9\sigma$ preference for running of the running of the tilt or a stronger $99\%$ CL local significance preference for a sharp drop in power around $k=0.004$ Mpc$^{-1}$ in generalized slow roll and a lower $H_0\approx 67$ km s$^{-1}$Mpc$^{-1}$. The same in-phase acoustic residuals at $\ell>1000$ that drive the global $H_0$ constraints and appear as a lensing anomaly also favor running parameters which allow even lower $H_0$, but not once lensing reconstruction is considered. Polarization spectra are intrinsically highly sensitive to these parameter shifts, and even more so in the Planck 2015 TE data due to an outlier at $\ell \approx 165$, which disfavors the best fit $H_0$ $\Lambda$CDM solution by more than $2\sigma$, and high $H_0$ value at almost $3\sigma$. Standard analyses of the reionization history of the universe from Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization measurements consider only the overall optical depth to electron scattering ($\tau$), and further assume a step-like reionization history. However, the polarization data contain information beyond the overall optical depth, and the assumption of a step-like function may miss high redshift contributions to the optical depth and lead to biased $\tau$ constraints. Accounting for its full reionization information content, we reconsider the interpretation of Planck 2015 Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) polarization data using simple, yet physically-motivated reionization models. We show that these measurements still, in fact, allow a non-negligible contribution from metal-free (Pop-III) stars forming in mini-halos of mass $M \sim 10^5-10^6 M_\odot$ at $z \gtrsim 15$, provided this mode of star formation is fairly inefficient. Our best fit model includes an early, self-regulated phase of Pop-III star formation in which the reionization history has a gradual, plateau feature. In this model, $\sim$20\% of the volume of the universe is ionized by $z \sim 20$, yet it nevertheless provides a good match to the Planck LFI measurements. Although preferred when the full information content of the data is incorporated, this model would spuriously be disfavored in the standard analysis. This preference is driven mostly by excess power from E-mode polarization at multipoles of $10 \lesssim \ell \lesssim 20$, which may reflect remaining systematic errors in the data, a statistical fluctuation, or signatures of the first stars. Measurements from the Planck High Frequency Instrument (HFI) should be able to confirm or refute this hint and future cosmic-variance limited E-mode polarization surveys can provide substantially more information on these signatures, Comment: likelihood code available on request

We conduct an analysis of the Planck 2015 data that is complete in reionization observables from the large angle polarization $E$-mode spectrum in the redshift range $6 < z < 30$. Based on 5 principal components, all of which are constrained by the data, this single analysis can be used to infer constraints on any model for reionization in the same range; we develop an effective likelihood approach for applying these constraints to models. By allowing for an arbitrary ionization history, this technique tests the robustness of inferences on the total optical depth from the usual step-like transition assumption, which is important for the interpretation of many other cosmological parameters such as the dark energy and neutrino mass. The Planck 2015 data not only allow a high redshift $z>15$ component to the optical depth but prefer it at the $2\sigma$ level. SPHEREx, the Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and ices Explorer, isa NASA MIDEX mission planned for launch in 2024. SPHEREx will carry out the first all-sky spectral survey at wavelengths between 0.75μm and 5μm with spectral resolving power ~40 between 0.75 and 3.8μm and ~120 between 3.8 and 5μm At the end of its two-year mission, SPHEREx will provide 14 billion 0.75-to-5μm spectra of each 6."2 x 6."2 pixel on the sky. This paper updates an earlier description of SPHEREx presenting changes made during the mission's Preliminary Design Phase, including a discussion of instrument integration and test flow and a summary of the data processing, analysis, and distribution plans.
