8. Influence of weak reversible cross-linkers on entangled polymer melt dynamics

Abstract

In this paper we study a system of entangled chains that bear reversible cross-links in a melt state. The cross-links are tethered uniformly on the backbone of each chain. A slip-link type model for the system is presented and solved for the relaxation modulus. The effects of entanglements and reversible cross-linkers are modelled as discrete form of constraints that influence the motion of the primitive path. In contrast to a non-associating entangled system the model calculations demonstrate that the elastic modulus has a much higher first plateau and a delayed terminal relaxation. These effects are attributed to the evolution of the entangled chains as influenced by tethered reversible linkers. The model is solved for the case when linker survival time $\tau_s$ is greater than the entanglement time $\tau_e$ but less than the Rouse time $\tau_R$.

Abstract

This investigation reports the synthesis of a new class of polyurethane (PU) based on bis(hydroxyalkyl) polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as diol and isophorone diisocyanate as diisocyanate followed by the preparation of PU/layered double hydroxide (PU/LDH) nanocomposite via ex-situ technique. Nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy studies confirm the formation of PU and incorporation of PDMS into the PU backbone. Thermogravimetry analysis revealed that thermal stability of the composite improves significantly with incorporation of LDH into the PU matrix. This may be accredited to the barrier effect rendered by the LDH layers. Differential scanning calorimetry study reveals that with the incorporation of LDH, glass transition temperature ([T.sub.g]) of the composite increases for an optimum level of loading beyond which it remains constant. 12. Moving least‐squares aided finite element method: A powerful means to predict flow fields in the presence of a solid part.

Abstract

With the assistance of the moving least‐squares (MLS) interpolation functions, a two‐dimensional finite element code is developed to consider the effects of a stationary or moving solid body in a flow domain. At the same time, the mesh or grid is independent of the shape of the solid body. We achieve this goal in two steps. In the first step, we use MLS interpolants to enhance the pressure (P) and velocity (V) shape functions. By this means, we capture different discontinuities in a flow domain. In our previous publications, we have named this technique the PVMLS method (pressure and velocity shape functions enhanced by the MLS interpolants) and described it thoroughly. In the second step, we modify the PVMLS method (the M‐PVMLS method) to consider the effect of a solid part(s) in a flow domain. To evaluate the new method's performance, we compare the results of the M‐PVMLS method with a finite element code that uses boundary‐fitted meshes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
