While the use of l-proline-derived peptides has been proven similarly successful with respect to enantioselectivity, the physico-chemical and conformational properties of these organocatalysts are not fully compatible with transition state and intermediate structures previously suggested for l-proline catalysis. l-Proline or l-4-hydroxyproline catalysis is assumed to involve proton transfers mediated by the carboxylic acid group, whereas a similar mechanism is unlikely for peptides, which lack a proton donor. Herein, we prepared an array of hydroxyproline-based dipeptides through amide coupling of Boc-protected cis- or trans-4-l-hydroxyproline (cis- or trans-4-Hyp) to benzylated glycine (Gly-OBn) and l-valine (l-Val-OBn) and used these dipeptides as catalysts for a model aldol reaction. Despite the lack of a proton donor in the catalytic site, we observed good stereoselectivities for the R-configured aldol product both with dipeptides formed from cis- or trans-4-Hyp at moderate conversions after 24 h. To explain this conundrum, we modeled reaction cycles for aldol additions in the presence of cis-4-Hyp, trans-4-Hyp, and cis- and trans-configured 4-Hyp-peptides as catalysts by calculation of free energies of conformers of intermediates and transition states at the density functional theory level (B3LYP/6-31G(d), DMSO PCM as solvent model). While a catalytic cycle as previously suggested with l-proline is also plausible for cis- or trans-4-Hyp, with the peptides, the energy barrier of the first reaction step would be too high to allow conversions at room temperature. Calculations on modeled transition states suggest an alternative pathway that would explain the experimental results: here, the catalytic cycle is entered by the acetone self-adduct 4-hydroxy-4-methylpentan-2-one, which forms spontaneously to a small extent in the presence of a base, leading to considerably reduced calculated free energy levels of transition states of reaction steps that are considered rate-determining.

Die damit zusammenhängenden Probleme werden plastisch dem Fragenkreis der Entscheidung in eigener Sache zugeordnet. Allerdings ist dieser namentlich von Hans Herbert von Arnim mitgeprägte Begriff missverständnisträchtig, gefahrgeneigt und umstritten.

The intriguing properties of metal sulfide nanoparticles (=MxSy-NPs), particularly transition metal dichalcogenides, are discussed for their use in diverse biological applications. Herein, recent advances in MxSy-NPs-based imaging (MRI, CT, optical and photoacoustic) and phototherapy (photothermal and photodynamic) are presented. Also, recent made progress in the use of immuno-phototherapy combinatorial approaches in vitro and in vivo are reported. Furthermore, challenges in nanomaterials-based therapies and future research directions by applying MxSy-NPs in combinatorial therapies are envisaged.

The application of early-metal-based catalysts featuring natural chiral pool motifs, such as amino acids, terpenes and alkaloids, in hydroamination reactions is discussed and compared to those beyond the chiral pool. In particular, alkaline (Li), alkaline earth (Mg, Ca), rare earth (Y, La, Nd, Sm, Lu), group IV (Ti, Zr, Hf) metal-, and tantalum-based catalytic systems are described, which in recent years improved considerably and have become more practical in their usability. Additional emphasis is directed towards their catalytic performance including yields and regio- as well as stereoselectivity in comparison with the group IV and V transition metals and more widely used rare earth metal-based catalysts.

The reaction of [Fe(η5-C5H4CH2OH)2] (1) with 2 equiv of ClC(O)R (2) (a, R = C6H5; b, R = 2-CH3-C6H4; c, R = 3-CH3-C6H4, d, R = 4-CH3-C6H4) produced the corresponding ferrocenyl carboxylates [Fe(η5-C5H4CH2OC(O)R)2] (3a–d). Treatment of [FcCH2OLi] (4-Li) (Fc = Fe(η5-C5H5)(η5-C5H4)) with (ClC(O))2C6H4 (5) (a, 1,2-((ClC(O))2-C6H4; b, 1,3-((ClC(O))2-C6H4; c, 1,4-((ClC(O))2-C6H4) in a 2:1 M ratio gave (FcCH2OC(O))2-C6H4 (6a–c), while with 1,3,5-(ClC(O))3-C6H3 (7) in a 3:1 M ratio produced 1,3,5-(FcCH2OC(O))3-C6H3 (8). All compounds were characterized by NMR (1H, 13C{1H}) and IR spectroscopy, ESI-TOF mass spectrometry and elemental analysis. The molecular structures of 3a–d and 6b in the solid state were determined by single crystal X-ray structure analysis, showing anti-periplanar orientations of the 1,1′-positioned substituents at ferrocene (3a–d). In the cyclic voltammograms of 3a–d, 6a–d and 8 reversible electrochemical redox processes (Fc/Fc+) were observed, ranging between 146 and 164 mV for 3a–d, ca. 100 mV for 6a–d and at 113 mV for 8 using [NnBu4][B(C6F5)4] as the supporting electrolyte. The molecular electronic structure of 3, 6 and 8 was calculated by DFT methods in order to obtain the HOMO and LUMO absolute and relative energies in addition to electron density and distribution within the molecular arrangements. It was found that different degrees of HOMO-LUMO energy gaps within the series, due to a lowering in the LUMO energy depending on the positions of the carboxylic ester substituents on the aryl rings, are in agreement with the electrochemical results obtained. (2-Acetylferrocen-1-yl)boronic acid, [Fe(C5H5)(C7H8BO3)] or 2-C(O)CH3-1-B(OH)2–Fc [Fc = Fe(η5-C5H3)(η5-C5H5)], crystallizes in the centrosymmetric space group P21/n. The boronic acid functionality interacts via intramolecular hydrogen bonds with the acetyl group and with the –B(OH)2 functionality of an adjacent molecule. The resulting centrosymmetric dimer exhibits an anti-positioning of the ferrocenyl moieties towards the central B2O4 plane. Consequently, an (Rp,Sp)-, i.e. a meso configuration is present for this dimer. In the crystal, weak C—H...O hydrogen bonds consolidate the molecular packing.

Treatment of 3,4-(ClC(O))2-cC4H2S (1) with [FcCH2OLi] (2-Li) (Fc = Fe(η5-C5H5)(η5-C5H4)) in a 1:2 ratio gave 3,4-(FcCH2OC(O))2-cC4H2S (3). Compound 3 decomposes in solution during crystallization to produce FcCH2OH (2) along with 3,4-thiophenedicarboxylic anhydride (4). The cyclic voltammogram of 3 exhibits a reversible ferrocene-related redox couple (E1/2 = 108 mV, vs. Cp2Fe/Cp2Fe+) using [NnBu4] [B(C6F5)4] as the supporting electrolyte. DFT calculations reveal that the energy values of the LUMO orbitals of 3 (3,4-thiophene core) show 1 eV higher energies than that one of 2,5-(FcCH2OC(O))2-cC4H2S (5), both compounds’ HOMO orbitals are close to each other. Compound 4 was characterized by single X-ray structure analysis. It forms a band-type structure based on intermolecular O1···S1 interactions being parallel to (110) and (1–10) in the solid state, while electrostatic C···O interactions between the C=O functionalities of adjacent molecules connect both 3D-networks. Hirshfeld surface analysis was used to gain more insight into the intermolecular interactions in 4, the enrichment ratios (E) suggest that O···H, S···S, and O···C are the most favored intermolecular interactions, as shown by E values above 1.20. The relevance of the weak O···H, O···O, and O···C contacts in stabilizing the molecular structure of 4 was highlighted by the interaction energies between molecular pairs.

The dispersion type Bi···π arene interaction is one of the important structural features in the assembly process of arylbismuth compounds. Several triarylbismuth compounds and polymorphs are discussed and compared based on the analysis of single crystal X-ray diffraction data and computational studies. First, the crystal structures of polymorphs of Ph3Bi (1) are described emphasizing on the description of London dispersion type bismuth···π arene interactions and other van der Waals interactions in the solid state and the effect of it on polymorphism. For comparison we have chosen the substituted arylbismuth compounds (C6H4-CH═CH2-4)3Bi (2), (C6H4-OMe-4)3Bi (3), (C6H3-t-Bu2-3,5)3Bi (4) and (C6H3-t-Bu2-3,5)2BiCl (5). The structural analyses revealed that only two of them show London dispersion type bismuth···π arene interactions. One of them is the styryl derivative 2, for which two polymorphs were isolated. Polymorph 2a crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P212121, while polymorph 2b exhibits the monoclinic space group P21/c. The general structure of 2a is similar to the monoclinic C2/c modification of Ph3Bi (1a), which leads to the formation of zig-zag Bi–arenecentroid ribbons formed as a result of bismuth···π arene interactions and π···π intermolecular contacts. In the crystal structures of the polymorph 2b as well as for 4 bismuth···π arene interactions are not observed, but both compounds revealed C–HPh···π intermolecular contacts, as likewise observed in all of the three described polymorphs of Ph3Bi. For compound 3 intermolecular contacts as a result of coordination of the methoxy group to neighboring bismuth atoms are observed overruling Bi···π arene contacts. Compound 5 shows a combination of donor acceptor Bi···Cl and Bi···π arene interactions, resulting in an intermolecular pincer-type coordination at the bismuth atom. A detailed analysis of three polymorphs of Ph3Bi (1), which were chosen as model systems, at the DFT-D level of theory supported by DLPNO-CCSD(T) calculations reveals how van der Waals interactions between different structural features balance in order to stabilize molecular arrangements present in the crystal structure. Furthermore, the computational results allow to group this class of compounds into the range of heavy main group element compounds which have been characterized as dispersion energy donors in previous work.

The synthesis, chemical and physical properties of [{AgO2CCH2OMe}n] (1) and [{AgO2CCH2OMe(PPh3)}n] (2) are reported. Consecutive reaction of AgNO3 with HO2CCH2OMe gave 1, which upon treatment with PPh3 produced 2. Coordination compound 2 forms a 1D coordination polymer in the solid state as evidenced by single crystal X-ray structure analysis. The coordination geometry at Ag+ is of the [3 + 1] type, whereby the carboxylate anions act as bridging ligands. The formation of PPh3–Ag(I) coordinative bonds results in distorted T-shaped AgPO2 units, which are stabilized further by an additional O–Ag dative bond. TG and TG–MS measurements show that 1 and 2 decompose at 190–250 °C (1) and 260–300 °C (2) via decarboxylation, involving Ag–P (2), C–C and C–O bond cleavages to give elemental silver as confirmed by PXRD studies. In order to verify if polymeric 2 is suitable as a FEBID precursor for silver deposition, its vapor pressure was determined (p170 °C = 5.318 mbar, ∆Hvap = 126.1 kJ mol−1), evincing little volatility. Also EI and ESI mass spectrometric studies were carried out. The dissociation of the silver(I) compound 2 under typical electron-driven FEBID conditions was studied by DFT (B3LYP) calculations on monomeric [AgO2CCH2OMe(PPh3)]. At an energy of the secondary electrons up to 0.8 eV elimination of PPh3 occurs, giving Ag+ and O2CCH2OMe−. Likewise, by release of PPh3 from [AgO2CCH2OMe(PPh3)] the fragment [AgO2CCH2OMe]− is formed from which Ag+ and O2CCH2OMe− is generated, further following the first fragmentation route. However, at 1.3 eV the initial step is decarboxylation giving [AgCH2OMe(PPh3)], followed by Ag–P and Ag–C bond cleavages.

A chemical reaction (esterification) within a molecular monolayer at the liquid–solid interface without any catalyst was studied using ambient scanning tunneling microscopy. The monolayer consisted of a regular array of two species, an organic acid (trimesic acid) and an alcohol (undecan-1-ol or decan-1-ol), coadsorbed out of a solution of the acid within the alcohol at the interface of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) (0001) substrate. The monoester was observed promptly after reaching a threshold either related to the increased packing density of the adsorbate layer (which can be controlled by the concentration of the trimesic acid within the alcoholic solution via sonication or extended stirring) or by reaching a threshold with regards to the deposition temperature. Evidence that esterification takes place directly at the liquid–solid interface was strongly supported.

The bottom-up approach to replace existing devices by molecular-based systems is a subject that attracts permanently increasing interest. Molecular-based devices offer not only to miniaturize the device further, but also to benefit from advanced functionalities of deposited molecules. Furthermore, the molecules itself can be tailored to allow via their self-assembly the potential fabrication of devices with an application potential, which is still unforeseeable at this time. Herein, we review efforts to use discrete (metallo)porphyrins for the formation of (sub)monolayers by surface-confined polymerization, of monolayers formed by supramolecular recognition and of thin films formed by sublimation techniques. Selected physical properties of these systems are reported as well. The application potential of those ensembles of (metallo)porphyrins in materials science is discussed.

Subsequent treatment of H2TPP(CO2H)4 (tetra(p-carboxylic acid phenyl)porphyrin, 1) with an excess of oxalyl chloride and HNR2 afforded H2TPP(C(O)NR2)4 (R = Me, 2; iPr, 3) with yields exceeding 80%. The porphyrins 2 and 3 could be converted to the corresponding metalloporphyrins MTPP(C(O)NR2)4 (R = Me/iPr for M = Zn (2a, 3a); Cu (2b, 3b); Ni (2c, 3c); Co (2d, 3d)) by the addition of 3 equiv of anhydrous MCl2 (M = Zn, Cu, Ni, Co) to dimethylformamide solutions of 2 and 3 at elevated temperatures. Metalloporphyrins 2a–d and 3a–d were obtained in yields exceeding 60% and have been, as well as 2 and 3, characterized by elemental analysis, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESIMS) and IR and UV–vis spectroscopy. Porphyrins 2, 2a–d and 3, 3a–d are not suitable for organic molecular beam deposition (OMBD), which is attributed to their comparatively low thermal stability as determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) of selected representatives.

Supramolecular recognition of perrhenate is a challenging task due to therelatively large size and low charge density of this anion. In this work, we design and synthesize a family of helix-like synthetic receptors that can bind perrhenate by forming hydrogen bonds with all four oxygen atoms of the anion. Among the investigated rigid helix-forming subunit derived from 1,1′-ferrocenedicarboxylic acid, 1,3-phenylenediacetic acid and 2,2′-(ethyne-1,2-diyl)dibenzoic acid, the latter one shows the best selectivity for perrhenate recognition. However, the receptor based on 1,1′-ferrocenedicarboxylic acid demonstrates selectivity to bind chloride in a 1:2 fashion. The properties of the receptors are investigated in the acetonitrile solution by using NMR, UV–Vis, and in the solid state by single crystal X-ray analysis.

Neutral [Ru(η6-arene)Cl2{Ph2P(CH2)3SPh-κP}] (arene = benzene, indane, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene: 2a, 2c and 2d) and cationic [Ru(η6-arene)Cl(Ph2P(CH2)3SPh-κP,κS)]X complexes (arene = mesitylene, 1,4-dihydronaphthalene; X = Cl: 3b, 3e; arene = benzene, mesitylene, indane, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene, and 1,4-dihydronaphthalene; X = PF6: 4a–4e) complexes were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, 1H, 13C and 31P NMR spectroscopy and also by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The stability of the complexes has been investigated in DMSO. Complexes have been assessed for their cytotoxic activity against 518A2, 8505C, A253, MCF-7 and SW480 cell lines. Generally, complexes exhibited activity in the lower micromolar range; moreover, they are found to be more active than cisplatin. For the most active ruthenium(II) complex, 4b, bearing mesitylene as ligand, the mechanism of action against 8505C cisplatin resistant cell line was determined. Complex 4b induced apoptosis accompanied by caspase activation.

The copper β-diketonate complex [Cu(tba)2] (3) (tba = deprotonated of 3-benzoyl-1,1,1-trifluoroacetone) was prepared by the direct reaction of Cu(OAc)2·H2O (2) (OAc = O2CMe) with two equivalents of H-tba (1). The formation of 3 was monitored by FT-IR and UV–Vis spectroscopy. Complex 3 crystallized in a monoclinic space group P2(1)/n with unit cell parameters a = 10.3719(3), b = 5.65410(10), c = 16.9974(2) Å, V = 995.47(4) Å3, and Z = 2. The crystal structure of 3 consists of a neutral [Cu(tba)2] complex sphere, wherein the geometry about the Cu2+ is precisely planar. The complex spheres are self-assembly stacked, face-to-face, via π–π interactions forming 1-D supramolecular chain.

The structure of the title compound, [Ag(C18H15P)4]2[Ag(C6H6NO6)(C18H15P)], exhibits trigonal (P-3) symmetry, with a C3 axis through all three complex ions, resulting in an asymmetric unit that contains one third of the atoms present in the formula unit. The formula unit thus contains two of the cations, one anion and disordered molecules of methanol as the packing solvent. Attempts to refine the solvent model were unsuccessful, indicating uninterpretable disorder. Thus, the SQUEEZE procedure in PLATON [Spek (2015). Acta Cryst. C71, 9–18] was applied, accounting for 670 electrons per unit cell, representing approximately 18 molecules of methanol in the formula unit. The stated crystal data for Mr, μ etc do not take these into account.

The molecular structure of the tetrakis(triphenylphosphanyl)disilver salt of butane-1,1,4,4-tetracarboxylic acid, [Ag2(C8H8O8)(C18H15P)4]·3CH2Cl2, crystallizes with one and a half molecules of dichloromethane in the asymmetric unit. The coordination complex exhibits an inversion centre through the central CH2—CH2 bond. The AgI atom has a distorted trigonal–planar P2O coordination environment. The packing is characterized by intermolecular T-shaped π–π interactions between the phenyl rings of the PPh3 substituents in neighbouring molecules, forming a ladder-type superstructure parallel to [010]. These ladders are arranged in layers parallel to (101). Intramolecular hydrogen bonds between the OH group and one O atom of the Ag-bonded carboxylate group results in an asymmetric bidendate coordination of the carboxylate moiety to the AgI ion.

The molecular structure of the title compound, [Fe(C5H5)(C15H12N)], consists of a ferrocene moiety with an N-phenylpyrrole heterocycle bound to one cyclopentadienyl ring. The 1,3-disubstitution of the pyrrole results in an L-shaped arrangement of the molecule with plane intersections of 2.78 (17)° between the pyrrole and the N-bonded phenyl ring and of 8.17 (18)° between the pyrrole and the cyclopentadienyl ring. In the crystal, no remarkable intermolecular interactions are observed

The synthesis of FcC(O)CH(R)C(O)Fc (Fc = Fe(η5-C5H4)(η5-C5H5); R = H, 5; nBu, 7; CH2CH2(OCH2CH2)2OMe, 9), [M(κ2O,O′-FcC(O)CHC(O)Fc)n] (M = Ti, n = 3, 10; M = Fe, n = 3, 11; M = BF2, n = 1, 12), and 1-R′-3,5-Fc2-cC3HN2 (R′ = H, 13; Me, 14; Ph, 15) is discussed. The solid-state structures of 5, 7, 9, 12, 13, 15, and 16 ([TiCl2(κ2O,O′-PhC(O)CHC(O)Ph)2]) show that 7 and 9 exist in their β-diketo form. Compound 13 crystallizes as a tetramer based on a hydrogen bond pattern, including one central water molecule. The electrochemical behavior of 5–7 and 9–16 was studied by cyclic and square-wave voltammetry, showing that the ferrocenyls can separately be oxidized reversibly between −50 and 750 mV (5–7, 9, 12–15: two Fc-related events; 10, 11: six events, being partially superimposed). For complex 10, Ti-centered reversible redox processes appear at −985 (TiII/TiIII) and −520 mV (TiIII/TiIV). Spectro-electrochemical UV-Vis/NIR measurements were carried out on 5, 6, and 12, whereby only 12 showed an IVCT (intervalence charge-transfer) band of considerable strength (νmax = 6250 cm−1, Δν½ = 4725 cm−1, εmax = 240 L·mol−1·cm−1), due to the rigid C3O2B cycle, enlarging the coupling strength between the Fc groups.

In the title compound, [{[(C6H5)3P]Ag}4{NCO}4], a distorted Ag4N4-heterocubane core is set up by four AgI ions being coordinated by the N atoms of the cyanato anions in a μ3-bridging mode. In addition, a triphenylphosphine ligand is datively bonded to each of the AgI ions. Intramolecular Ag...Ag distances as short as 3.133 (9) Å suggest the presence of argentophilic (d10...d10) interactions. Five moderate-to-weak C—H...O hydrogen-bonding interactions are observed in the crystal structure, spanning a three-dimensional network. A region of electron density was treated with the SQUEEZE procedure in PLATON [Spek (2015). Acta Cryst. C71, 9–18] following unsuccessful attempts to model it as being part of disordered tetrahydrofuran solvent molecules. The given chemical formula and other crystal data do not take into account these solvent molecules.

The copper(II) polypyridyl complex [Cu(pyterpy)2](ClO4)2 (3) (pyterpy = 4′-(4-pyridyl)-2,2′:6,2″-terpyridine) was prepared by the reaction of pyterpy (1) with stoichiometric amounts of [Cu(ClO4)2·6H2O] (2). The progress of the reaction was controlled by FT-IR and UV–vis spectroscopy. The title complex crystallized in the tetragonal space group I4(1)/a with unit cell dimensions of a = 8.6277(1), b = 8.6277(1), c = 57.6398(10) Å, V = 4290.55(12) Å3, and Z = 4. The structure of 3 in the solid-state consists of discrete [Cu(pyterpy)2]+ ions with copper(II) in a distorted octahedral environment setup by two meridional coordinated tripodal 4′-(4-pyridyl)-2,2′:6,2″-terpyridine ligands of which the pyridyl unit stays free. Face-to-face π-interactions between terminal coordinated terpy C5N rings link adjacent [Cu(pyterpy)2]2+ units resulting in the formation of a 2D-polymer. The geometrical-to-geometrical centroid distance (d) is 3.568 Å.

The molecular structure of ruthenocenecarbonitrile, [Ru(η5-C5H4C[triple-bond]N)(η5-C5H5)], exhibits point group symmetry m, with the mirror plane bisecting the molecule through the C[triple-bond]N substituent. The RuII atom is slightly shifted from the η5-C5H4 centroid towards the C[triple-bond]N substituent. In the crystal, molecules are arranged in columns parallel to [100]. One-dimensional intermolecular π–π interactions [3.363 (3) Å] between the C[triple-bond]N carbon atom and one carbon of the cyclopentadienyl ring of the overlaying molecule are present.

The molecular structure of (acetone-κO)tris(μ-ferrocene-1,1′-dicarbonitrile-κ2N:N′)dicopper(I) bis(tetrafluoridoborate) acetone monosolvate, [Cu2Fe3(C6H4N)6(C3H6O)](BF4)2·C3H6O, consists of two CuI ions bridged by a ferrocene-1,1′-dicarbonitrile moiety in a paddle-wheel-architectured sandwich complex with two BF4− units as counter-ions. One of the latter is equally disordered over two sets of sites. The two CuI ions are complexed in a trigonal–planar manner by three nitrile N-donor atoms. Further interactions by the O atom of an acetone molecule to one of the CuI atoms and a weak η2,π-interaction of two atoms of a cyclopentadienyl ring to the other CuI atom complete a distorted trigonal–pyramidal environment for each of the metal ions. A further acetone molecule is also present as a solvent molecule. The crystal packing is consolidated by several π–π interactions.

The molecular structure of the title compound, [Fe(C9H6BrS)(C13H7F6)], consists of a ferrocene backbone with a bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl group at one cyclopentadienyl ring and a thiophene heterocycle at the other cyclopentadienyl ring. The latter is disordered over two sets of sites in a 0.6:0.4 ratio. In the crystal structure, intramolecular π–π interactions between the thienyl and the phenyl substituent [centroid–centroid distance 3.695 (4) Å] and additional weak T-shaped π–π interactions between the thienyl and the phenyl-substituted cyclopentadienyl ring [4.688 (6) Å] consolidate the crystal packing.

In the tetranuclear molecule of the title compound, [Ag4(C9H10O4)2(C18H15P)4], the AgI ion is coordinated by one P and three O atoms in a considerably distorted tetrahedral environment. The two 2,2-diallylmalonate anions bridge four AgI ions in a μ4-(κ6O1,O3:O3:O1′,O3′:O1′) mode, setting up an Ag4O8P4 core (point group symmetry -4..) of corner-sharing tetrahedra. The shortest intramolecular Ag...Ag distance of 3.9510 (3) Å reveals that no direct d10...d10 interactions are present. Four weak intramolecular C—H...O hydrogen bonds are observed in the crystal structure of the title compound, which most likely stabilize the tetranuclear silver core.

Cyclooctyne and cycloocten-5-yne undergo, at room temperature, a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition with dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates 1a,b to generate furan-derived short-lived intermediates 2, which can be trapped by two additional equivalents of 1a,b or alternatively by methanol, phenol, water or aldehydes to yield polycyclic products 3b–d, orthoesters 4a–c, ketones 5 or epoxides 6a,b, respectively. Treatment of bis(trimethylsilyl) acetylenedicarboxylate (1c) with cyclooctyne leads to the ketone 7 via retro-Brook rearrangement of the dipolar intermediate 2c. In all cases, the products are formed with perfect atom economy.

The first total synthesis of the marine bromotyrosine purpurealidin I (1) using trifluoroacetoxy protection group and its dimethylated analog (29) is reported along with 16 simplified bromotyrosine derivatives lacking the tyramine moiety. Their cytotoxicity was evaluated against the human malignant melanoma cell line (A-375) and normal skin fibroblast cells (Hs27) together with 33 purpurealidin-inspired simplified amides, and the structure⁻activity relationships were investigated. The synthesized simplified analogs without the tyramine part retained the cytotoxic activity. Purpurealidin I (1) showed no selectivity but its simplified pyridin-2-yl derivative (36) had the best improvement in selectivity (Selectivity index 4.1). This shows that the marine bromotyrosines are promising scaffolds for developing cytotoxic agents and the full understanding of the elements of their SAR and improving the selectivity requires further optimization of simplified bromotyrosine derivatives.

The crystal structure of the title compound, [Ir(C10H15)Cl(C21H21PS)]Cl·H2O, consists of discrete [Ir(η5-C5Me5)Cl{Ph2P(CH2)3SPh-κP,κS}]+ cations, chloride anions and water molecules. The IrIII atom is coordinated by an η5-C5Me5 ligand, a chloride and a Ph2P(CH2)3SPh-κP,κS ligand, leading to a three-legged piano-stool geometry. In the crystal, two water molecules and two chloride anions are linked by weak O—H...Cl hydrogen bonding into tetramers that are located on centers of inversion. The H atoms of one of the methyl groups are disordered and were refined using a split model.

In the title mononuclear coordination complex, [CuFe(C5H5)(C9H5F3O2)(C18H15P)2], the CuI ion is coordinated by the chelating β-diketonate 1-ferrocenyl-4,4,4-trifluorobutane-1,3-dione ligand through two O atoms and the two datively bonded triphenylphosphane ligands resulting in a distorted tetrahedral coordination sphere. The CuI ion, together with its chelating butane-1,3-dione group, is mutually coplanar [greatest displacement of an atom from this plane = 0.037 (1) Å], and the CuI ion lies slightly above [0.013 (1) Å] the plane. The overall geometry, including the bond distances and angles within the complex, corresponds to those of other reported copper(I) β-diketonates featuring organic groups at the β-diketonate ligand.
