The photochemical reactivity of alcohols was investigated on bare and Pt or Ni cluster-loaded rutile TiO2(110) under highly defined conditions in ultra-high vacuum. Tertiary alcohols were selectively oxidized. A deactivation mechanism in the photochemical conversion of primary alcohols was proposed. For the first time, Ni clusters were successfully employed for photocatalytic H2 evolution in ultra-high vacuum, where they showed a similar behavior as Pt clusters., Die photochemische Reaktivität von Alkoholen wurde auf reinem sowie mit Pt- oder Ni-Cluster beladenem Rutil TiO2(110) unter sehr definierten Bedingungen im Ultrahochvakuum untersucht. We present a highly sensitive and versatile Si-based µ-reactor for photocatalytic experiments. The µ-reactor can be operated in front side (through a borosilicate window) as well as backside (through the catalyst support) illumination. The µ-reactor is sealed by compressing the Si-based microchip, a parafilm gasket and the supported catalyst by four screws. This design allows for fast and reliable assembly of the µ-reactor and the microchip is re-usable for several independent experiments, making the presented µ-reactor ideal for catalyst screening studies. We analyze volatile reactants on-line by connecting the µ-reactor to a mass-spectrometer. The limiting capillary of the µ-reactor allows for nearly 100% collection efficiency (i.e. every produced molecule will be collected) by limiting the gas flow to the mass-spectrometer— enabling highly sensitive measurements and an absolute calibration. Finally, the small height of the reactor volume results in very fast response times, which make the reactor suitable for studies of transient activity phenomena—including catalyst activation and deactivation. We demonstrate these capabilities of the µ-reactor by performing CO oxidation experiments on a TiO2 thin film with subsequent calibration of the chip. Based on a mathematical model of the µ-reactor we additionally present a method for determining the residence time, the reaction volume and the working distance.

Activation of carbon dioxide and methane by tantalum-based charged metal clusters is studied in gas-phase kinetic and spectroscopic experiments. In these experiments, two regimes of the reactivity of tantalum clusters towards CO2, a catalytic cycle of non-oxidative coupling of CH4 by Ta8O2+, and C-C and C-O coupling reactions enabled by bare Ta+ and Ta4+ were identified. The work addresses synthesis strategies for colloidal nanoparticles and their application in the semi-hydrogenation of liquid alkynes. Photochemical rearrangement reactions are a fascinating tool in organic chemistry to contruct complex core structures. This work deals with the enantioselective Lewis acid catalyzed photochemical rearrangements of 2,4-cyclohexadienones. A newly developed chiral oxazaborolidinium complex was able to catalyze the photorearrangement at visible light and low catalyst loading with excellent enantioselectivities. This thesis focused on the study of Hume-Rothery inspired cluster synthesis controlled by addition of additives. Alkynes were used as the appropriate additive to vary cluster size and metal distribution of intermetallic TM/E compounds (TM = Ni, Pd, Pt; E = Al, Ga). Combining in-situ analytical methods with theoretical calculations, valid structural suggestions could be proposed without isolation. Lastly, selected clusters were tested for their suitability for semi-hydrogenation reactions., Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit der Untersuchung von Hume-Rothery inspirierten Clustersynthese, die durch die Zugabe von Additiven gesteuert wird. This work focuses on the optical properties of noble metal and semiconductor nanomaterials. First, the mechanism of chirality transfer between organic molecules and noble metal nanomaterials was investigated. Then studies on the luminescence of silicon nanocrystal ensembles were performed. Finally, second harmonic generation spectroscopy was successfully applied to semiconductor nanomaterials., Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit den optischen Eigenschaften von edelmetallbasierten und halbleiterbasierten Nanomaterialien. Chiral volatile molecules are studied in the gas phase by means of circular dichroism – resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization – mass spectrometry (CD-REMPI-MS) which may be used as an analytical tool for products of the asymmetric catalysis. Further, the combination of CD-REMPI-MS with laser desorption enables the investigation of non-volatile compounds. The interactions between unsaturated hydrocarbons and transition metals are of fundamental importance for many catalytic processes. In this work, the influence of the hydrocarbon's molecular structure, as well the metal's in the form of either supported nanoparticles or size-selected clusters, was studied under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions. Transport under reactive and non-reactive conditions during xylene gas phase isomerization on MFI is influenced by the coverage of the external surface. The rate determining pore entrance rate of xylenes correlates directly with the coverage of the transported molecules on the external surface. For mixtures of p- and m- or o-xylene, the transport rate is reduced by the competitive adsorption of m-xylene at the pore entrance. An ES-CIBD system is evaluated by processing spermine, insulin and pUC19. Analysis of mass spectra reveal details about charging behaviour and topology of the analytes. Structural properties are investigated by STM. The findings are evaluated by explorative analysis as well as the behaviour of self-assembly. Another approach to analyse surface processes is TPD. Gas-phase metal clusters serve as model systems for active sites in catalytic processes. In this work, mass-selected tantalum-based clusters are exposed to reactive gases in a cryogenic ring electrode ion trap. Subsequent modeling facilitates the kinetic and mechanistic characterization of reactions, which focus on the C–H bond activation of methane. These studies are centered around the effect of the cluster size and the properties of specific tantalum cluster oxides., Freie Metallcluster fungieren als Modellsysteme für aktive Zentren in katalytischen Vorgängen. Semiconductors and metal cluster-semiconductor model systems are studied to gain a fundamental understanding of photocatalytic mechanisms. For several thermal and photocatalytic reactions new reaction pathways are unraveled. The influence of semiconductor material properties on thermal and photo-activated surface processes were studied under well-defined conditions. The oxidation of alcohols and the photon-stimulated desorption of CO were investigated as a function of the type of semiconductor, its doping and surface composition. In this thesis, deuterium incorporation from D2O into bacteria was investigated using confocal Raman microscopy. Applying this Raman-imaging-based method, the effects of different antibi-otics on M. smegmatis and M. tuberculosis were studied with subcellular spatial resolution. Different modes of action were observed. In a second part, the reaction kinetics and mechanism of hydrogenation of 4-nitrothiophenol (4-NTP) to 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) were systemati-cally investigated via surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)., In dieser Arbeit wurde der Einbau von Deuterium aus D2O in Bakterien mittels konfokaler Ra-man-Mikroskopie untersucht. In einem zweiten Teil wurden die Reaktionskinetik und der Mechanismus der Hydrie-rung von 4-Nitrothiophenol (4-NTP) zu 4-Aminothiophenol (4-ATP) mittels oberflächenver-stärkter Raman-Spektroskopie (SERS) systematisch untersucht.

Femtosecond spectroscopy is applied to examine photophysical and photochemical processes in technically and pharmaceutically relevant organic molecules. The experiments comprise broadband transient absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence upconversion. Moreover, we demonstrate the generation of well-defined optical activity during laser desorption with circularly polarised femtosecond pulses in a racemic film deposited on an achiral substrate using surface-second-harmonic spectroscopy and numerical modelling., Mittels Femtosekundenspektroskopie untersuchen wir photophysikalische und photochemische Vorgänge in pharmazeutisch und technisch relevanten organischen Molekülen. To tackle the synthesis of naked, atom-precise metal nanoclusters on a feasible scale, a metal-organic framework (MOF) template method was developed in this work. The proof-of-principle system [Pt9(CO)18](NBu4)2@ZIF-8 could be thermally decarbonylated to yield the extremely stable composite material Pt12±x@ZIF-8 which was highly active in the oxygen reduction reaction. Preliminary studies to transfer the concept to other clusters and ZIFs were presented., In dieser Arbeit wurde eine Methode zur Synthese von nackten, atompräzisen Metallnanoclustern entwickelt, die auf der Verkapselung in metallorganische Gerüste (MOFs) beruht. Tungsten carbides, WC and W2C, are a cheap alternative to noble metal-based platinum catalysts. This work describes the preparation of high surface area tungsten carbide catalysts and their passivation and reactivation. Tungsten carbide is applied in combination with nickel for the valorization of biomass-derived furfural. A thin film of tungsten carbide on tungsten metal is pitted against platinum in the medium temperature electrocatalytic splitting of water at 350 °C to 390 °C., Wolframcarbide, WC und W2C, sind eine kostengünstige Alternative zu edelmetallbasierten Platinkatalysatoren. Lewis-Säure-Base-Paare sind die aktiven Zentren bei der Thiolierung von Methanol. This work focuses on the optical properties of noble metal and semiconductor nanomaterials. First, the mechanism of chirality transfer between organic molecules and noble metal nanomaterials was investigated. Then studies on the luminescence of silicon nanocrystal ensembles were performed. Finally, second harmonic generation spectroscopy was successfully applied to semiconductor nanomaterials., Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit den optischen Eigenschaften von edelmetallbasierten und halbleiterbasierten Nanomaterialien. Zu Beginn wurde der Mechanismus des Chiralitätstransfers zwischen organischen Molekülen und Edelmetall-Nanopartikeln untersucht. Im weiteren Verlauf wurden Studien zur Lumineszenz von Silizium-Nanopartikeldispersionen durchgeführt. Abschließend wurde Frequenzverdopplungs-spektroskopie erfolgreich an Halbleiter-Nanomaterialien erprobt.
