The Potamotrygon from the Potamotrygonidae family is a freshwater stingray that is native to and distributed throughout South American watersheds. The degradation suffered by the environment in recent years, particularly in aquatic habitats, directly affects native fish species. Due to anthropic actions, some species of the genus Potamotrygon are threatened with extinction, encouraging a study on captive breeding procedures. Six Potamotrygon falkneri adult males, kept under the care of the Sao Paulo Aquarium, Brazil, were divided into groups to compare two distinct semen collection protocols: physical restraint (PR) and chemical restraint (CR – 3 mg / kg propofol, directly into the gills). The protocols were alternated between the two groups in a 50-day interval. For both restraining protocols, after positioning the animal on a moistened foam in dorsal recumbency, semen collection was performed by placing a collecting tube at the cloaca opening while performing a gentle massage of the vas deferens. Sperm evaluation was performed at the moment of collection (time 0) by means of conventional semen analysis. There was no significant difference between the restraining methods examined for any parameter evaluated. The results suggest that physical restraint followed by manual massage is an effective approach to harvest semen in stingrays and should be considered the first choice of method, as it not only demonstrated to be a faster procedure but more importantly eliminated anaesthetic-associated risks for the animal. To our knowledge, this is the first study that validates the semen collection technique in live Potamotrygon falkneri rays and is extremely relevant for the development of future reproductive biotechniques in Potamotrygon.

Programas de enriquecimento ambiental vêm sendo amplamente realizados em zoológicos e instituições afins para promover a manutenção do bem-estar dos animais. No caso de cangurus, muitos estudos se concentraram no repertório comportamental expresso por alguns grupos de vida livre, mas poucos se referem a esses animais em ambientes controlados. Este estudo objetiva aplicar técnicas de enriquecimento ambiental a um grupo de cangurus vermelhos (Osphranter rufus) no Aquário de São Paulo a fim de se avaliar seus efeitos no comportamento desses animais. As observações (amostragem instantânea) foram realizadas ao longo de 60 horas divididas igualmente em três etapas: antes (pré-enriquecimento), durante e depois (pós-enriquecimento) da aplicação de enriquecimentos ambientais, sendo considerados para a análise estatística os 10 comportamentos mais frequentes expressos em todas as etapas. Comportamentos associados à vigilância do ambiente e ao autogerenciamento diminuíram suas frequências, e aqueles relacionados à automanutenção aumentaram suas frequências após a aplicação de enriquecimentos. Os resultados mostraram que o uso de enriquecimentos induziu mudanças na expressão dos comportamentos e ofereceu diversos estímulos positivos aos indivíduos. Portanto, a rotina de enriquecimentos proposta pode ser aplicada a outros grupos de cangurus sob cuidados humanos.

The current global situation requires urgent decision-making to reverse processes of mass extinction of thousands of species. As a way of showing the importance of joint actions in this process, we aim to present the concept of One Conservation as a new proposal for the integration of sustainability, in situ and ex situ conservation for the restoration of ecosystems. According to the United Nations, we are beginning the decade of ecosystem restoration and in association with the International Union for Conservation of Nature guidelines, we can join efforts in the conservation of the planet. The survival of many species of wild animals depends on the management of populations currently maintained in ex situ conditions (under human care). To facilitate the exchange of genetic material between in situ and ex situ populations, reproductive biotechniques have become a great tool, making it possible to restore species in their natural environments. For effective conservation to occur, there must be an integrated view of the problem as a whole, and action for solutions must take place jointly by different spheres of society. Even more, conservation must be carried out by the public sector, the private sector, the third sector, and not less importantly, the agricultural sector. Therefore, One Conservation is defined as an interconnection between ex situ and in situ conservation plans, anthropic actions in the environment, and research in different areas that encompass conservation.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-04-07 Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) Nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum, Ginglymostomatidae) are one of the most exhibited shark species in aquariums worldwide. However, in these locations, their reproductive success rate is frequently low. Considering that there is probably an olfactory mediation for nurse shark reproduction, and that environmental enrichment has a potentially positive effect on reproduction of captive animals, the present study aimed to evaluate whether the use of olfactory enrichment would stimulate olfactory-driven behaviors and consequently generate effects in the exhibition of reproductive behaviors by the species both in the short and long term. The study was divided into three phases (control, short-term enrichment and long-term enrichment), was conducted at two institutions with distinct husbandry and used aqueous extracts of basil leaves as olfactory enrichment. Eleven individuals were selected through focal sampling for behavioral observations with instantaneous recording, the total of 120 h of observation were divided into active and inactive periods. Results showed that basil-based olfactory enrichment was effective in increasing the occurrence of reproductive behaviors in both female and male nurse sharks. Additionally, the long-term results showed higher effects in males, which strengthen the theory of olfactory mediation of reproductive behavior in the species as individuals became aware of the sensory cues in the environment and performed more olfactory-driven reproductive behaviors. It is important to note that enrichment effects are different between sexes and therefore close monitoring and scheduling are essential to avoid over-stimulation or habituation to the enrichment. Although its reproductive behavioral repertoire is already known, including indications that females are not passive to the attempts of males, no indication of proceptive behavior of females of this species is known. Considering that proceptive behavior is what initiates or increases the probability of a male exhibiting sexual behaviors directed at a female, the present study carried out behavioral observations in two groups of nurse sharks in reproductive period to identify possible proceptive behaviors. The present work identified a new behavior, here referred to as Body Movement (BM), as an indicator of proceptivity. This behavior corresponded on average to 47.68% of the reproductive behaviors performed by the females and its occurrence was positively correlated (r = 0.5143341 / p = 0.04152 - Spearman) with the occurrence of socio-reproductive behaviors of males. Being able to identify signs of proceptivity in animals is important to understand the reproductive context in which a group is found and to allow greater attention to animals that are able to reproduce, in order to create more efficient reproductive management programs to develop long-term sustainable population management. Three movements have been reported in Carcharias taurus and here the first occurrence of clasper flaring in this species is described. Clasper flaring was observed while other species were in a reproductive state and their aggressive behaviour towards the subject of this study was also observed. Objetivou-se aqui aplicar diferentes enriquecimentos ambientais a dois indivíduos de tamanduá-mirim (Tamandua tetradactyla) do Aquário de São Paulo em três fases: (1) pré-enriquecimento; (2) enriquecimento; (3) pós-enriquecimento. Alterações nas frequências de alguns comportamentos interativos e associados à locomoção foram observadas para ambos os indivíduos, de forma a apontar que a aplicação dos enriquecimentos teria favorecido nos animais maior atividade, promovendo estímulos e refletindo, portanto, maior bem-estar, além de contribuir para o aumento da variabilidade e complexidade do ambiente onde estes são mantidos.Palavras chave: Comportamento Animal, Etologia, Xenarthra, Vermilingua.
