The advance of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet (CIS) towards its Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) configuration and its subsequent retreat remain poorly understood. We use the glacial landform record to determine ice dynamics for the central sector of the CIS in northern British Columbia, Canada, beneath the LGM ice divide. We classify seventy ice-flow indicator flowsets based on morphology, elevation, orientation and cross-cutting relationships into one of three stages, whereby stage 1 is oldest and stage 3 youngest. Combined with ice-contact geomorphology, our reconstruction highlights complex changes in ice flow over time as a result of ice divide migrations through the LGM and deglacial phases. The orientation and distribution of landforms indicates active post-LGM ice retreat westward through the Cassiar and Omineca mountains. We map the regional distribution of independent mountain glaciers, ice caps, and ice fields that regrew during a cooling event in the Late Glacial and show that some of these readvance glaciers were subsequently overrun by advancing outlet glaciers of the CIS. We use the cross-cutting relationship between readvance glaciers and CIS outlet glaciers and available chronological data to reconstruct the eastern CIS margin during the Late Glacial for the first time.Key words: Pleistocene, paleoglaciology, North America, glacial geomorphology.

The North American Ice Sheet Complex (comprising the Laurentide, Cordilleran and Innuitian ice sheets) was the largest ice mass in the Northern Hemisphere that grew towards and waned after the Last Glacial Maximum. The existing ice margin chronology available for the North American Ice Sheet Complex is based on radiocarbon data only and does not reflect other geochronometric information constraining the last deglaciation, such as cosmogenic exposure- or optically stimulated luminescence ages. Here we present a series of newly produced ice margin isochrones from 25 ka to present, in a time step of 500 years. For each isochron, we draw maximum, best estimate, and minimum ice margin position in an attempt to capture the existing uncertainty. The ice margin isochrones are based on (i) an up-to-date dataset of radiocarbon ages (~5000), (ii) 10Be and 26Al cosmogenic nuclide data that directly date ~80 ice-marginal features over North America, (iii) ~350 optically stimulated luminescence ages dating the deposition of an aeolian cover immediately post-deglaciation, (iv) the ice-sheet scale glacial geomorphology record. Our effort brings the information on the last North American Ice Sheet Complex deglaciation on par with that for the Eurasian Ice Sheets and should serve the broad community of Quaternary research from archaeology to numerical ice sheet modelling.

The Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) was the largest of the ephemeral Pleistocene ice sheets in the Northern Hemisphere, with a Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) ice volume similar to the modern Antarctic ice sheet. A recent inventory of paleo-ice streams across the LIS shows many similarities with present-day ice streaming in Antarctica, where ice streams account for approx. 90% of mass loss. However, in the Mackenzie Lowlands of the Northwest Territories, Canada, the paleo-ice stream record is enigmatic. Previous work has identified a number of large paleo-ice streams, including the Mackenzie Trough, Anderson, Bear Lake and Fort Simpson ice streams, however, their extent, configuration, temporal relationship to each other and spatial evolution over time remains poorly constrained. Consequently, their impact on the rate and style of deglaciation of the northwestern sector of the LIS is poorly understood.Here we utilise the newly available high resolution Arctic DEM (0.5 m resolution) to re-map glacial landforms across the Mackenzie Lowlands in greater detail (area >800,000 km2). We then use this landform record to reconstruct the ice dynamics in this region following the well-established approaches of flowset mapping and the glacial inversion method. The high resolution data allow us to present a detailed reconstruction of LGM ice flow over the Mackenzie Lowlands and resolve the configuration and evolution of ice streams over time. The landform record suggests that the ice streams operated time-transgressively during deglaciation, switching on and off at different times. While ice contact landforms, such as moraines, lateral and submarginal meltwater channels and ice-contact deltas, show the overall retreat of the LIS towards the Keewatin Dome in the east, in several regions the ice retreat record is complex, suggesting interlobate ice configurations with multiple ice retreat directions.

The Cordilleran Ice Sheet (CIS) repeatedly covered western Canada during the Pleistocene and attained a volume and area similar to that of the present-day Greenland Ice Sheet at the Last Glacial Maximum. Numerical modelling studies of the CIS during the last glacial-interglacial cycle indicate the central sector of this ice sheet, located in mountainous northern British Columbia, played an important role during both the advance and retreat phases. Additionally, the models indicate that the rapid climate oscillations at the end of the Pleistocene had a dramatic effect on the CIS. The abrupt warming at the onset of the Bølling-Allerød caused significant thinning of the ice sheet, resulting in a fifty percent reduction in mass, while the subsequent cooling caused the expansion of alpine glaciers across the former central sector of the CIS. However, the mountainous terrain and remote location have thus far impeded our understanding of this important region of the CIS, and the ice sheet configuration during the Late Glacial remains poorly constrained. Here we use the glacial landform record to reconstruct the deglaciation dynamics of the central sector of the CIS during the Late Pleistocene climate reversals. Numerous high elevation meltwater channels suggests the early emergence of mountain peaks above the ice sheet and the configuration of ice marginal landforms, particularly lateral meltwater channels, eskers, kame terraces and ice-contact deltas, allows the westward retreat of the ice margin to be traced towards ice dispersal centres in the Skeena and Coast mountains. Hundreds of arcuate, sharp-crested terminal moraines delineate the extent of alpine glaciers, ice caps and ice fields that regrew on mountain peaks above the CIS and numerical dating indicates that this readvance occurred during the Late Glacial period. Additionally, at some locations, cross-cutting relationships preserve the interaction of the local readvance glaciers with the trunk glaciers of the CIS, allowing the extent of the central sector of the CIS during the Late Glacial period to be reconstructed for the first time.

During the last glacial maximum the Cordilleran and Laurentide ice sheets coalesced east of the Rocky Mountains and geomorphological evidence indicates ice flowed over the main ridge of the Rocky Mountains between ~54–56°N. However, this ice flow has thus far remained unconstrained in time. Here we use in situ produced cosmogenic10Be dating to determine when Cordilleran ice stopped flowing over the mountain range. We dated eight samples from two sites: one on the western side (Mount Morfee) and one on the eastern side (Mount Spieker) of the Rocky Mountains. At Mount Spieker, one sample is rejected as an outlier and the remaining three give an apparent weighted mean exposure age of 15.6 ± 0.6 ka. The four samples at Mount Morfee are well clustered in time and give an apparent weighted mean exposure age of 12.2 ± 0.4 ka. These ages indicate that Mount Spieker became ice free before the Bølling warming and that the western front of the Rocky Mountains (Mount Morfee) remained in contact with the Cordilleran Ice Sheet until the Younger Dryas.

The Cordilleran Ice Sheet (CIS) repeatedly covered western Canada during the Pleistocene and attained a volume and area similar to that of the present-day Greenland Ice Sheet. Deglaciation of the CIS following the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) directly affected atmosphere and ocean circulation, eustatic sea level, and human migration from Asia to North America. It has recently been shown that the rapid climate oscillations at the end of the Pleistocene had a dramatic effect on the CIS. Data on glacial isostatic adjustment and cosmogenic nuclide exposure ages indicate that abrupt warming at the onset of the Bølling-Allerød caused significant thinning of the ice sheet, resulting in a fifty percent reduction in mass, while the Younger Dryas cooling caused the expansion of alpine glaciers across the mountains of western Canada. However, the mountainous subglacial terrain makes it challenging to reconstruct the regional-scale deglaciation dynamics of the ice sheet, and its configuration during this period of rapid change remains poorly constrained. Here we use the glacial landform record to reconstruct the ice sheet configuration for the central sector of the CIS, over the Cassiar and Omineca Mountains in northern British Columbia, during the Late Pleistocene climate reversals. We present the first regional-scale reconstruction of the CIS following the Bølling-Allerød warming, whereby the ice sheet was reduced to a labyrinth of valley glaciers fed by ice dispersal centres located over the Skeena Mountains in the south and Coast Mountains in the west. Additionally, numerous lateral and terminal late glacial moraines delineate the extent of alpine glaciers, ice caps and ice fields that regrew on mountain peaks above the CIS during the Younger Dryas. Cross-cutting relationships indicate that the valley glaciers of the CIS were slower to respond to the Younger Dryas cooling than the mountain glaciers.
