Alignment is the cornerstone of many long-read pipelines and plays an essential role in resolving structural variants (SVs). However, forced alignments of SVs embedded in long reads, inflexibility of integrating novel SVs models and computational inefficiency remain problems. Here, we investigate the feasibility of resolving long-read SVs with alignment-free algorithms. We ask: (1) Is it possible to resolve long-read SVs with alignment-free approaches? and (2) Does it provide an advantage over existing approaches? To this end, we implemented the framework named Linear, which can flexibly integrate alignment-free algorithms such as the generative model for long-read SV detection. Furthermore, Linear addresses the problem of compatibility of alignment-free approaches with existing software. It takes as input long reads and outputs standardized results existing software can directly process. We conducted large-scale assessments in this work and the results show that the sensitivity, and flexibility of Linear outperform alignment-based pipelines. Moreover, the computational efficiency is orders of magnitude faster.

We provide new evidence on how intellectual property (IP) rights support external debt financing by investigating exogenous variation in patent right enforcement. Deploying a unique, large-scale sample of European firms, we exploit the 2004 EU Enforcement Directive, a major legislative change strengthening IP rights across Europe, as identifying event. Results show that firms with valuable patent portfolios disproportionally increase debt financing by about 21%. Effects are particularly pronounced for private SMEs, ex-ante financially constrained firms, and in competitive environments. Adding previously undisclosed patent collateral information provides suggestive evidence that enhanced IP enforcement benefits debt financing beyond a mere collateral channel.

Liquid foams occur whether intentionally or unintentionally across different industrial sectors. The detection of foam and characterization of its liquid content currently requires complex measurement methods such as electrical conductivity measurements. This paper presents a novel method for foam detection and characterization of its liquid fraction based on a capacitive level sensor. A correlation between the sensor output signal and defined liquid fractions of dry to wet foam indicated a high accuracy of this sensor technique. Regarding the sensor operation in different liquid solutions, a minimum screw-in depth is presented. The sensor allows minimal invasive inline measurements in equipment regardless of the wall material and extreme process conditions e.g. explosion hazard areas.

This paper analyses the importance of intellectual property in determining capital structure decisions. We argue that firms can use their patent stock as collateral and thereby relax possible debt financing restrictions. Using data from the European Patent Office and balance sheet data of European companies, we find that larger and more valuable patent stocks lead to higher debt-ratios - controlling for well-established capital structure determinants. We further assess variation across as well as within industries and show that effects are mainly driven by tech-oriented and research intensive firms. Drawing on a legislative change in EU- law, allows us to establish a causal relationship between firms' patent portfolio and their use of debt. Results provide a new perspective on optimal capital structure decisions. From a policy perspective, our findings suggest to further harmonize enforcement rules on intellectual property to support financially constrained, innovative firms.
