This paper summarises findings from two workshops evaluating a series of views in various settings by an interdisciplinary group of experts. In the first one (Trondheim, June 2022), ten experts visited and assessed views from nine rooms. In the second one (Lausanne, June 2023), eleven experts assessed window views from four spaces. The workshops’ main objective was to develop and test multi-method assessments of window views. During both workshops, participants completed a survey that included close and open-ended questions about the perceived quality of the room and the view. Participants also measured lux level, took photographs, made hand drawings of the view, and answered a questionnaire about their mood and the environmental conditions in the room. After the workshop, point-in-time daylight simulations were performed for the visited rooms. The paper describes, compares, and recommends the use of the aforementioned methods depending on the type and complexity of the view, and the space, the evaluators’ professional background, and the type of collected data. It also discusses the overlap of the methods and estimates the preparation time, time spent on site, and the amount of work after the visit. Finally, it recommends the use of the tested methods depending on the application.

The transition to renewable energy sources comes along with the search for new energy storage solutions. Molecular solar thermal systems directly harvest and store solar energy in a chemical manner. By a suitable molecular design, a higher overall efficiency can be achieved. In this study, we investigate the surface chemistry of oxa-norbornadiene/quadricyclane derivatives on a Pt(111) surface. Specifically, we focus on the energy storage and release properties of molecules that are substituted with ester moieties of different sizes. For our model catalytic approach, synchrotron radiation-based x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements were conducted in ultra-high vacuum (UHV) and correlated with the catalytic behavior in the liquid phase monitored by photochemical infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy. The differences in their spectral appearance enabled us to unambiguously differentiate the energy-lean and energy-rich isomers and decomposition products. Next to qualitative information on the adsorption motifs, temperature-programmed experiments allowed for the observation of thermally induced reactions and the deduction of the related reaction pathways. We analyzed the selectivity of the cycloreversion reaction from the energy-rich quadricyclane derivative to its energy-lean norbornadiene isomer and competing processes, such as desorption and decomposition. For the 2,3-bis(methylester)-substitution, the cycloreversion reaction was found to occur between 310 and 340 K, while the thermal stability limit of the compounds was determined to be 380 K. The larger 2,3-bis(benzylester) derivatives have a lower apparent adsorption energy and a decomposition onset already at 135 K. In the liquid phase (in acetonitrile), we determined the rate constants for the cycloreversion reaction on Pt(111) to k = 5.3 × 10−4 s−1 for the 2,3-bis(methylester)-substitution and k = 6.3 × 10−4 s−1 for the 2,3-bis(benzylester) derivative. The selectivities were of >99% and 98% for the two molecules, respectively. The difference in the catalytic behavior of Pt(111) for both derivatives is less pronounced in the liquid phase than in UHV, which we attribute to the passivation of the Pt(111) surface by carbonaceous species under ambient conditions. We investigated the dehydrogenation reaction and the thermal robustness of the liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) couple benzaldehyde/cyclohexylmethanol on a Pt(111) model catalyst in situ in synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy‐ and complementary temperature‐programmed desorption experiments. The system stores hydrogen in a cyclohexyl group and a primary alcohol functionality and achieves an attractive hydrogen storage capacity of 7.0 mass %. We observed a stepwise dehydrogenation mechanism, characterized by a low temperature dehydrogenation of the alcohol group at 235 K. However, stability limitations challenge the system's application as reversible hydrogen storage solution, as the resultant aldehyde was found to decompose during the dehydrogenation of its cyclohexyl group (between 250 and 350 K). A comparison of cyclohexylmethanol with the structurally related secondary alcohol (1‐cyclohexylethanol; 6.3 mass % hydrogen) revealed a parallel stepwise dehydrogenation pattern for both compounds, but a technically relevant superior thermal robustness of the latter, demonstrating the influence of the alcohol‐group's substitution degree on the dehydrogenation characteristics of alcohol‐functionalized LOHCs. Molecular solar thermal systems (MOSTs) are molecular systems based on couples of photoisomers (photoswitches), which combine solar energy conversion, storage, and release. In this work, we address the catalytically triggered energy release in the promising MOST couple phenylethylesternorbornadiene/quadricyclane (PENBD/PEQC) on a Au(111) surface in a combined liquid‐phase and surface science study. We investigated the system by photoelectrochemical infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PEC‐IRRAS) in the liquid phase, conventional IRRAS and synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy (SRPES) in ultra‐high vacuum (UHV). Au(111) is highly active towards catalytically triggered energy release. In the liquid phase, we did not observe any decomposition of the photoswitch, no deactivation of the catalyst within 100 conversion cycles and we could tune the energy release rate of the heterogeneously catalyzed process by applying an external potential. In UHV, submonolayers of PEQC on Au(111) are back‐converted to PENBD instantaneously, even at 110 K. Multilayers of PEQC are stable up to ~220 K. Above this temperature, the intrinsic mobility of the film is high enough that PEQC molecules come into direct contact with the Au(111) surface, which catalyzes the back‐conversion. We suggest that this process occurs via a singlet–triplet mechanism induced by electronic coupling between the PEQC molecules and the Au(111) surface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Among other N-heterocycles, indole and its substituted derivatives, such as methylindoles, are considered promising Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (LOHCs) for the storage of renewable energy. We used X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature programmed desorption (TPD), and density-functional theory (DFT) to investigate the low temperature adsorption and consecutive dehydrogenation reaction during heating of 2-methylindole, 2-methylindoline, and 2-methyloctahydroindole on Pt(111) and their viability as the LOHC system. In the photoemission experiments, for all Hx-2-methylindoles, we find deprotonation at the NH bond starting between 240 and 300 K, resulting in a 2-methylindolide species. Simultaneously or before this reaction step, the dehydrogenation of 2-methyloctahydroindole via 2-methylindoline and 2-methylindole intermediates is observed. For 2-methyloctahydroindole, we also find π-allyl intermediates above 230 K. Starting at ∼390 K, decomposition of the remaining 2-methylindolide species takes place under the conditions of our surface science experiments. DFT calculations give insight into the relative energies of the various species, reaction intermediates, and their isomers both in the gas phase and on the Pt(111) surface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We sought to determine whether the normal inspiratory intrathoracic pressures ([P.sub.ITP]) produced during exercise contribute to the blunted cardiac output and locomotor limb blood flow responses observed in chronic heart failure (CHF). Five chronically instrumented dogs exercised on a treadmill at 2.5 mile/h at 5% grade while healthy or after the induction of tachycardia-induced CHF. We observed several key differences in the cardiovascular responses to changes in the inspiratory [P.sub.ITP] excursion between health and CHF; namely, 1) removing ~70% of the normally produced inspiratory [P.sub.ITP] excursion during exercise (with 15 cm[H.sub.2]O inspiratory positive pressure ventilation) significantly reduced stroke volume (SV) in healthy animals by 5 [+ or -] 2% (P < 0.05) hut significantly increased SV and cardiac output ([Q.sub.ToT]) in animals with CHF by 5 [+ or -] 1% (P < 0.05); 2) doubling the magnitude of the inspiratory [P.sub.ITP] excursion had no effect on SV or [Q.sub.ToT] in healthy animals but significantly reduced steady-state [Q.sub.ToT] and SV in animals with CHF by -4 [+ or -] 3% and -10 [+ or -] 3%, respectively; 3) removing the majority of the normally produced inspiratory [P.sub.ITP] excursion had no effect on blood flow distribution in healthy animals but increased hindlimb blood flow (9 [+ or -] 3%, P < 0.05) out of proportion to the increases in [Q.sub.ToT]; and 4) the only similarity between healthy and CHF animals was that increasing the inspiratory [P.sub.ITP] excursion significantly reduced steady-state locomotor limb blood flow by 5 [+ or -] 2% and 6 [+ or -] 3%, respectively (P < 0.05 for both). We conclude that 1) the normally produced inspiratory [P.sub.ITP] excursions are required for a maximal SV response to submaximal exercise in healthy animals but detrimental to the SV and [Q.sub.ToT] responses to submaximal exercise in CHF, 2) the respiratory muscle ergoreflex tonically restrains locomotor limb blood flow during submaximal exercise in CHF, and 3) excessive inspiratory muscle work further compromises cardiac function and blood flow distribution in both health and CHF. muscle metaboreflex; respiratory muscle pump; cardiopulmonary interactions
