We describe a new species of Hemidactylus based on an integrative taxonomic framework from scrub habitats at the southern tip of India, in Thoothukudi District, Tamil Nadu. The new species has the most densely packed tubercles among Indian Hemidactylus, almost resembling the most tuberculate Indian Cyrtopodion. Hemidactylus quartziticolussp. nov. is phylogenetically placed within the brookii group of Indian Hemidactylus, where it is sister to the H. gleadowi complex from western-central India. The new species is 14.5–23.7% divergent in ND2 mitochondrial sequence data from other brookii group members, and can be easily diagnosed from regional congeners by its unique dorsal scalation, the number and arrangement of precloacal-femoral pores, the number of dorsal tubercle rows at midbody, number of lamellae under digit I and IV of manus and pes. The new species is currently known only from two isolated, low quartzite hillocks 45 km apart with scrubby, thorn forests and loose, stony soil.

Widely distributed in tropical areas both in the Old and New Worlds, including some Atlantic islands. In Equatorial Guinea it has been recorded in the islands of Bioko (at Malabo) (Carranza & Arnold 2006) and Annobon (Jesus et al. 2003; Rocha et al. 2005), and in Río Muni at the village of Sendje in Monte Mitra, within the Monte Alén National Park (Gonwouo & Nsang 2005) (Map 8B). Comments. One of the most widespread species of the genus, as it has been introduced in several tropical regions. Likely originated in East Africa. Based on mtDNA (12S and CytB gene fragments) this species is very uniform across most of its distribution, which encompass tropical Africa, including Bioko (Malabo), South America, North America (Florida) and some Caribbean areas (Carranza & Arnold 2006; Rato et al. 2021). However, despite the widespread genetic uniformity of H. mabouia in most of its range, deep lineages and cryptic diversity across the eastern coast of Africa have been documented (Agarwal et al., 2021). The taxonomic status and relationships between some populations formerly recorded as H. mabouia and the Malagasy H. mercatorius Gray, 1842 are in need of revision (Rocha et al. 2005; Rocha et al. 2010a; Agarwal et al. 2021). Within this context, the results obtained by Rocha et al. (2005) and Rocha et al. (2010a) based on mtDNA (16S gene fragment) and nuDNA (cmos gene fragment), showed that populations from Annobon and some other Gulf of Guinea islands, such as São Tomé and Príncipe, are nested within a clade formed by populations of H. mercatorius from Madagascar, Comoros, Uganda, and the Islands of Mahé (Seychelles), Zanzibar and Pemba (Tanzania). As Hemidactylus mercatorius has been described from northern Madagascar [restricted to Seychelles by Loveridge (1947)], Rocha et al. (2010a) suggested the use of H. mercatorius for the populations of the islands of the Gulf of Guinea (Annobon, São Tomé and Príncipe), leaving the status of continental populations pending further studies. By contrast, the specimens from Bioko (Malabo) and São Tomé and Príncipe sequenced by Carranza & Arnold (2006) did not cluster with two Malagasy samples of H. mercatorius, thus considering the Atlantic populations as H. mabouia (Rato et al. 2021), which is congruent with the results obtained by Agarwal et al. (2021). Until the taxonomic identities of these populations alongside with those from mainland Africa are properly investigated, we tentatively follow the application of the most conservative designation, H. mabouia, for the Equatorial Guinea populations (Agarwal et al. 2021). Ceríaco et al. (2018, 2022) used the name H. mabouia for the populations from the islands of the Gulf of Guinea. In Río Muni, the species frequents human settlements (Gonwouo & Nsang 2005). Pérez del Val (2001) listed the preserved specimens MNCN 15664 and MNCN 15666–15668 as H. mabouia, which are herein re-identified as H. angulatus. Specimens examined. Thirty-five specimens. Comments: Hemidactylus mabouia is commonly found in northern Angola and along the coastline of the country (Marques et al. 2018; Ceríaco et al. 2020a). This species is frequently associated with urban habitats and it is one of the most widespread Hemidactylus species (and geckos in general), with a broad distribution in sub-Saharan Africa, especially south of the Sahel (Ceríaco et al. 2020a). Ferreira (1904) cited female specimens from “Cabiri”, “Serra de Stombe” and “Catete” and an additional adult from “Cambondo” (Ferreira 1906). Extant in MHNC-UP exist specimens from both “Cabiri” (MHNCUP/REP 210) and “Catete” (MHNCUP/REP 212–213). Agarwal et al. (2021) recently revised H. mabouia and found it to comprise as many as 20 putative species-level lineages. Ceríaco et al. Our goal was to investigate how the community composition, prevalence and abundance of parasites change across seven populations of the exotic lizard Hemidactylus mabouia in Northeast Brazil, and to describe ontogenetic and sex variations. We found differences in the composition of component communities and patterns of infection according to the host body size across the lizard populations. We did not find any variation between the sexes regarding epidemiological patterns, which can probably be explained by the similar diet and habitat use of male and female H. mabouia. An unusually high abundance and prevalence of trematodes infecting this host lizard was apparent when we compared other native lizard hosts, and we suggest that local environmental conditions might be advantageous to the development and life cycle of these parasites due to the abundance of all the intermediate and definitive hosts. Hemidactylus frenatus is an Asian gecko species that has invaded many tropical regions to become one of the most widespread lizards worldwide. This species has dispersed across the Pacific Ocean to reach Hawaii and subsequently Mexico and other Central American countries. More recently, it has been reported from northwestern South America. Using 12S and cytb mitochondrial DNA sequences I found that South American and Galápagos haplotypes are identical to those from Hawaii and Papua New Guinea, suggesting a common Melanesian origin for both Hawaii and South America. Literature records suggest that H. frenatus arrived in Colombia around the mid-'90s, dispersed south into Ecuador in less than five years, and arrived in the Galápagos about one decade later.

Hemidactylus mabouia is an introduced gecko in Venezuela (Rivas et al. 2005). Its origin is not clear but seems to have come through ships from Africa. These are the earliest records of this species in Sucre state. The species is currently widely distributed anthropically in Venezuela (Rivas et al. 2005). In the lot of Hemidactylus mabouia, there are a few mislabeled H. palaichtus (see under its own account). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2016-01-01 The decay of similarity between biological communities with increasing geographical distance is a well-established pattern in ecology, but there are more complex factors acting on host population connections that influence this association for parasite communities, such as parasites' colonization ability and degree of connectivity between host populations. Here we aim to determine the helminth communities associated with different populations of the host lizard Hemidactylus mabouia, testing if the similarity of parasite communities decreases as the distance between them increases. For this, we collected samples of lizard populations in seven sites from Northeastern coast of Brazil and identified parasite species of helminths and pentastomids in each host, calculated the Sørensen indices of presence/absence and abundance of each pair of communities and related them to the geographical distance. We did not find a relationship of decaying similarity with increasing distance between the parasite communities of the host populations. This can be explained by factors such as the characteristics of the contact between the host populations, and by modes of transmission of most parasite species. Furthermore, it may be related to the exotic nature of the host in Brazil so that parasite communities have not reached equilibrium. Considered a recent introduction to South America, Hemidactylus mabouia occurs in all countries of the continent (see references above), and in all Brazilian states, including the Amazonian region (Fig. 1). It is scansorial and nocturnal, and it inhabits perianthropic areas (non-forested areas���Kluge 1969; Crump 1971; ��vila-Pires 1995; Macedo et al. 2008). Kluge (1969) suggested the presence of H. mabouia in natural environments in Peru and Ecuador, and Nascimento (1998) observed its presence in the open vegetation (lavrado) areas of the state of Roraima, Brazil, partitioning niche with Tropidurus hispidus and Gymnophthalmus leucomystax, inside (holes) of termite nests. The way the species that compose these communities and how they are distributed and structured, depends on many factors, including historical, biogeographical and evolutionary. In this study, we aimed to understand how communities of amphibians and lizards are structured and what environmental and degradation factors determine this structure. We sampled five restinga habitats (sandy coastal plains) in the state of Espírito Santo, using linear transects in different vegetation types (mesohabitats) in this ecosystems. We conducted sampling in the dry and in the rainy season in all restinga habitats, totaling 60 hours of sampling effort for amphibians and 75 hours for lizards. We recorded a total of 32 species of frogs together in the five restingas, which two of these being endemic species of this ecosystem: Scinax agilis and Melanophryniscus setiba. The restinga Paulo Cesar Vinha was the remnant with the highest frog species richness, while the Reserva Biologica de Comboios had the lowest richness. In terms of species composition, Praia das Neves and Paulo Cesar Vinha were the most similar, while Comboios was the farthest in the Cluster analysis. We recorded six reproductive modes for frog species in the five restinga habitats, which 75% were related to aquatic environments. The availability of nesting sites for the species of frogs was positively related to species richness in restingas. The individuals recorded used all mesohabitats of restingas, except the vegetation types of halofila-psamófila and a considerable percentage of individuals were found in the wetlands. In addition to our data about lizards community, we considered those available in Dias e Rocha (2014) and those found in Winck (2012). We recorded a total of 23 species of lizards in the restinga habitats sampled in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Espirito Santo and Bahia. We observed that the communities in the studied restingas have considerable differentiation between them. The beta diversity - β was high while the degree of nestedness was intermediate. We also recorded the presence of the exotic invader lizard Hemidactylus mabouia in natural environment in the remaining restingas studied in this thesis. We found 45 individuals in three of the five sampled restingas. We also recorded eggs of H. mabouia (2 of them hatched) in two of the five sites studied, indicating that the recruitment of individuals is taking place successfully. The presence of H. mabouia was related to restingas with higher frequency of environmental degradation. We consider that the data obtained in this Thesis, provides considerable importance of information for understanding the structure of amphibian and lizards communities in restingas ecosystems along the Brazilian coast. A forma como as espécies que compõem estas comunidades, como elas se distribuem e como estão estruturadas, depende de inúmeros fatores, entre eles históricos, biogeográficos e evolutivos. Neste estudo, buscamos compreender como as comunidades de anfíbios anuros e de lagartos estão estruturadas e quais fatores ambientais e de degradação são determinantes nesta estruturação. Amostramos cinco remanescentes de restinga no estado do Espírito Santo, utilizando método de procura ativa em transecções lineares nas diferentes fisionomias vegetais destes ecossistemas. Realizamos amostragens nas estações seca e de chuvas em todas as restingas, e somamos um total de 60 horas de esforço amostral para os anfíbios e 75 horas para os lagartos. Registramos um total de 32 espécies de anfíbios anuros conjuntamente nos cinco remanescentes de restinga, sendo duas destas espécies endêmicas deste ecossistema: Scinax agilis e Melanophryniscus setiba. A restinga do Parque Paulo Cesar Vinha foi o remanescente com a maior riqueza de espécies de anuros, enquanto a restinga da Reserva Biológica de Comboios foi, comparativamente, o remanescente com menor riqueza de espécies. Em termos de composição de espécies, as restingas de Praia das Neves e Paulo Cesar Vinha foram as mais similares, enquanto a restinga de Comboios foi a mais distante na análise de agrupamento. Registramos no conjunto de restingas seis modos reprodutivos para as espécies de anuros, sendo 75% deles relacionados aos ambientes aquáticos. A disponibilidade de locais de desova esteve positivamente relacionada à riqueza de espécies. Todos os mesohábitats das restingas, com exceção das fitofisionomias de halófila-psamófila, foram utilizados pelos indivíduos registrados, entretanto, uma porcentagem considerável dos indivíduos foi encontrada nos alagados. Em relação às comunidades de lagartos, adotamos além dos nossos dados, aqueles disponíveis em Dias e Rocha (2014) e aqueles disponíveis em Winck (2012). Registramos um total de 23 espécies de lagartos nos remanescentes de restinga amostrados nos estados do Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo e Bahia. Observamos que as comunidades presentes nos remanescentes estudados possuem considerável diferenciação entre elas. A diversidade beta (β) foi elevada enquanto o grau de aninhamento foi intermediário. Registramos ainda a presença do lagarto exótico invasor Hemidactylus mabouia em ambiente natural nos remanescentes de restinga estudados neste Tese. Encontramos 45 indivíduos, distribuídos em três dos cinco remanescentes amostrados. Registramos ainda ovos de H. mabouia (2 deles eclodidos) em dois dos cinco locais estudados, indicando que o recrutamento de indivíduos está ocorrendo com sucesso nas populações invasoras. A presença de H. mabouia esteve relacionada à restingas com maior frequência de degradação ambiental. We have studied the terrestrial reptile fauna of the Abrolhos Archipelago (a group of five islands located ca. 70 km off the southern coast of the State of Bahia, Brazil) and analyze here some of its ecological aspects such as diet, thermal ecology, activity, and some reproductive parameters. Three lizards comprise the archipelago's terrestrial reptile fauna: Tropidurus torquatus (Tropiduridae), Mabuya agilis (Scincidae), and Hemidactylus mabouia (Gekkonidae). The first two are diurnal and the latter is crepuscular/nocturnal (initiating activity at ca. 17:30). The activity period of T. torquatus extended from 5:30 to 18:30 h. Mean field body temperatures of active T. torquatus, M. agilis, and H. mabouia were, respectively, 34.0 ± 3.7ºC (range 23.8-38.0ºC; N = 75), 34.5 ± 2.2ºC (range 30.8-37.0ºC; N = 6), and 26.3 ± 1.1ºC (range 24.8-28.0ºC; N = 8). The predominant prey items in the diet of T. torquatus were ants, coleopterans, and hemipterans. In the diet of M. agilis, coleopterans were the most frequent prey items. For H. mabouia, the most important dietary items were orthopterans. Clutch size of T. torquatus averaged 4.1 ± 1.1 (range 2-6; N = 15) and was significantly related to female size (R² = 0.618; p = 0.001; N = 15). Clutch size for H. mabouia was fixed (two) and mean litter size of the viviparous M. agilis was 3.3 ± 0.6 (range 3-4; N = 3). Tropidurus torquatus and H. mabouia deposit their eggs under rocks in the study area, with the former burying them but not the latter; in both species, more than one female often oviposit under the same rock. Estudamos a fauna de répteis terrestre do Arquipélago de Abrolhos (um conjunto de cinco ilhas localizadas a 70 km da costa sul do Estado da Bahia, Brasil) e analisamos alguns aspectos da ecologia das espécies, como a dieta, ecologia termal, atividade e alguns parâmetros reprodutivos. A fauna de répteis do arquipélago compreende três lagartos: Tropidurus torquatus (Tropiduridae), Mabuya agilis (Scincidae) e Hemidactylus mabouia (Gekkonidae). Os dois primeiros são diurnos e o último é crepuscular/noturno (iniciando atividade às 17h30). O período de atividade de T. torquatus se estendeu de 5h30 a 18h30. As temperaturas corpóreas médias em atividade de T. torquatus, M. agilis e H. mabouia foram, respectivamente, de 34,0 ± 3.7ºC (amplitude 23,8-38,0ºC; N = 75), 34,5 ± 2,2ºC (amplitude 30,8-37,0ºC; N = 6) e 26,3 ± 1,1ºC (amplitude 24,8-28,0ºC; N = 8). Os itens alimentares predominantes na dieta de T. torquatus foram formigas, coleópteros e hemípteros. Na dieta de M. agilis, coleópteros foram os itens mais freqüentes. Para H. mabouia, os itens alimentares mais importantes na dieta foram ortópteros. O tamanho médio da ninhada de T. torquatus foi de 4,1 ± 1,1 (amplitude 2-6; N = 15) e estava significativamente relacionado com o tamanho da fêmea (R² = 0,618; p = 0,001; N = 15). O número de ovos para H. mabouia foi fixo (dois) e o tamanho médio da ninhada para a espécie vivípara M. agilis foi de 3,3 ± 0,6 (amplitude 3-4; N = 3). Tropidurus torquatus e H. mabouia depositam seus ovos sob rochas na área estudada, sendo que o primeiro enterra seus ovos e o segundo não; em ambas as espécies, mais de uma fêmea freqüentemente utiliza a mesma rocha para oviposição.

Redescriptions are given of the mature oocysts of Isospora ameivae Carini, 1932, from the teiid lizard Ameiva ameiva, and Isospora hemidactyli Carini,1936 from the gecko Hemidactylus mabouia, in north Brazil. The endogenous stages of the two parasites in the small intestine are described. Those of I. ameivae are intracytoplasmic, whereas those of I. hemidactyli are intranuclear.

Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais Studies on the testicular histology of reptiles are scarce. More specifically, there are no reports on the morphology of the reproductive cycle and spermatogenic process of the reptilian species Hemidactylus mabouia. Hence, this study aimed to characterize morphologically the testis of H. mabouia, and contribute for the understanding of the reproductive biology of this species. The spermatozoon of H. mabouia presented morphology similar to the majority of the species of reptiles studied so far. However, its intermediate piece was the longest described. The testis of H. mabouia was predominantly occupied by seminiferous tubules, which were separated by very little interstitial tissue. The seminiferous epithelium presented cell types that were morphologically and structurally similar to those described for other reptiles and for the majority of mammalian species. The presence of germ cells from all maturation phases in the seminiferous epithelium and numerous spermatozoa in the tubular lumen indicated that H. mabouia has continuous spermatogenic activity throughout the year. The Leydig cells were rare in the interstitial tissue of H. mabouia, contrasting with most of species described. The present study establishes for the first time stages for the spermatogenic cycle of a reptile. Seven stages were identified according to the tubular morphology of H. mabouia. These stages had very heterogeneous and marked assembly of germ cells. Additionally, we observed a helicoidal arrangement of the stages along the seminiferous epithelium, similarly to birds and some primates, but differing substantially from the segmented pattern observed in most mammalian species. The reproductive parameters described in this study propose H. mabouia as a promising model for comparative studies among reptiles regarding reproductive morphology. Furthermore, the paucity of data on the reproductive biology of this species justifies additional studies on its reproductive cycle and spermatogenic process. Estudos relacionados à histologia testicular de répteis são escassos. Para Hemidactylus mabouia, não existem relatos na literatura que retratem aspectos morfológicos do seu ciclo reprodutivo e do processo espermatogênico. Assim, neste trabalho caracterizamos morfologicamente o testículo de H. mabouia, gerando dados que contribuem para o entendimento de sua biologia reprodutiva. Os espermatozóides de H. mabouia apresentam morfologia e medidas espermáticas semelhantes àquelas registradas para a maioria das espécies de répteis estudadas. Contudo, o comprimento da peça intermediária é o maior já descrito para répteis. O testículo de H. mabouia é formado predominantemente por túbulos seminíferos conectados por pouquíssimo tecido intersticial. O epitélio seminífero apresenta vários tipos celulares com características morfológicas e estruturais semelhantes àquelas descritas para outros répteis e para a maioria das espécies de mamíferos. A presença de células germinativas em todas as fases de maturação e de numerosos espermatozóides no lume tubular demonstra que H. mabouia apresenta atividade espermatogênica contínua ao longo do ano. As células de Leydig são raras no tecido intersticial de H. mabouia, contrastando com a maioria das espécies estudadas. O presente trabalho constitui o primeiro relato de classificação do ciclo espermatogênico de répteis em estádios. Foram identificados sete estádios nos túbulos seminíferos de H. mabouia, de acordo com o método da morfologia tubular, sendo estes muito variáveis quanto à composição de células germinativas. Tais estádios possuem um arranjo helicoidal semelhante àquele descrito em aves e em alguns primatas, diferindo substancialmente do padrão segmentar observado na maioria dos mamíferos. Os parâmetros reprodutivos descritos neste trabalho permitem estabelecer H. mabouia como modelo promissor para estudos morfológicos comparativos entre répteis. Além disso, a escassez de dados referentes à biologia reprodutiva da espécie justifica estudos adicionais relativos ao seu ciclo reprodutivo e ao seu processo espermatogênico.

An African Gecko Hemidactylus mabouia (Squamata, Gekkonidae) to control the wax moths of hives Galleria mellonella and Achroia grisella (Lepidoptera, Pyralidae). To test the effect on the Honey Bees and the control efficiency on moths Galleria mellonella Linnaeus and Achroia grisella Fabricius (Insecta, Lepidoptera) called commonly greater and lesser wax moths of bee hives, the Squamate Hemidactylus mabouia (Moreau de Jonnès, 1818) (Squamata, Gekkonidae) has been introduced in hives populated of bees in presence separately of imagos of wax moths and honey bees in globes. It showed that Hemidactylus mabouia fitted easily to microclimatic conditions of hives and consumed 90.33 ± 1.93% of moths ; on the other hand it had no effect on bees’ populations. In general, the female reproductive tract of reptiles consists of a pair of ovaries and oviducts that act as a conduct for the egg between ovulation to oviposition. The gekkonid lizard belong to the genus Hemidactylus, which is inserted in the family Gekkonidae and in the order Squamata. The oviduct structure of the Hemidactylus mabouia was examined by light and scanning electron microscopy through routine and histochemical techniques which revealed the presence of four distinct regions that, starting anteriorly, include: infundibulum, earlier segment of the oviduct that opens to the coelomic cavity; uterine tube, place of sperm storage; uterus, where it is formed the eggshell; and vagina, final portion of the oviduct. Over the course of the reproductive cycle the oviduct undergoes morphological changes allowing the identification of four distinct phases: proliferative, vitellogenic, gravidity and regressive. This study obtained results consistent with other studies involving reptiles, in addition, provided data that could contribute significantly to the understanding of phylogeny and behavioral aspects of the reproductive biology of H. mabouia. Em geral, o aparelho reprodutor feminino dos répteis é constituído por um par de ovários e pelos ovidutos que funcionam como um conduto para o ovo desde a ovulação até a oviposição. As lagartixas pertencem ao gênero Hemidactylus, o qual está inserido na família Gekkonidae e na ordem Squamata. A estrutura do oviduto de lagartixas da espécie Hemidactylus mabouia foi analisada ao microscópio eletrônico de varredura e ao microscópio de luz através de técnicas de rotina e histoquímicas, que evidenciaram a presença de quatro regiões distintas que começando anteriormente são: infundíbulo, segmento mais anterior do oviduto que se abre na cavidade celomática; tuba uterina, local de estocagem de espermatozóides; útero, região onde é formada a casca do ovo e vagina, porção final do oviduto. Ao longo do ciclo reprodutivo o oviduto sofre modificações morfológicas marcantes permitindo a identificação de quatro fases distintas denominadas: proliferativa, vitelogênica, gravídica e regressiva. Este estudo obteve resultados consistentes com outros trabalhos envolvendo répteis, além disso, forneceu dados que poderão contribuir de maneira significativa para a compreensão da filogenia e de aspectos comportamentais da biologia reprodutiva de H. mabouia.

Hemidactylus mabouia (Moreau de Jonn��s, 1818) Although very widespread in sub��Saharan Africa (Loveridge 1947; Kluge 1969; Broadley 1977), Dunger (1968) considered the species uncommon in Nigeria, and regarded populations in port areas as introduced. There appear to be no published records of this species from B��nin, so the specimens cited below constitute a new country record. This species shares with H. angulatus broad transverse subcaudal plates and largely overlapping ranges of precloacal pores and tubercle rows. It is possible that some literature records of H. angulatus may be referable to H. mabouia. The biology of this species was recently considered by Gramentz (2000, 2003). The ultrastructure is described of the meronts, microgamonts and young oocyst stages of Isospora hemidactyli of the gecko Hemidactylus mabouia from Bel?m, PA, north Brazil. The endogenous stages all develop in the nucleus of the gut epithelial cells. The nucleus remains intact up to the latest stages of the parasite?s development, but degenerates by the time the oocyst appears. Merogonic division appears to be asynchronous, and some of the differentiated merozoites contained more than one nucleus. Microgamonts conform in structure with those of other eimeriids. Some of the type 2 wall-forming bodies disintegrate into smaller globules and ground substance of lower density.
