1. Improved magnetization in sputtered dysprosium thin films

Abstract

50nm thick nanogranular polycrystalline dysprosium thin films have been prepared via ultra-high vacuum DC sputtering on SiO2 and Si wafers. The maximum in-plane spontaneous magnetization at T = 4K was found to be MS4K = 3.28T for samples deposited on wafers heated to 350C with a Neel point of TN = 173K and a ferromagnetic transition at TC = 80K, measured via zero field cooled field cooled magnetization measurements, close to single crystal values. The slightly reduced magnetization is explained in the light of a metastable face centered cubic crystal phase which occurred at the seed interface and granularity related effects, that are still noticeably influential despite an in-plane magnetic easy axis. As deposited samples showed reduced magnetization of MS4K = 2.26T, however their ferromagnetic transition shifted to a much higher temperature of TC = 172K and the antiferromagnetic phase was completely suppressed probably as a result of strain., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The search for materials or systems exhibiting a high magnetic saturation has been of longstanding importance. It has been suggested that increased saturation could be achieved by coupling a transition metal via a spacer to a rare earth. We report Gd/Cr/Fe70Co30 multilayer stacks and find reduced yet modulating magnetic moment as a function of Cr thickness. Through a micro structural analysis the lowered moment is indicated by the nucleation of the ultrathin Gd films into an fcc phase. We discuss the possible solution in terms of quasi-perfect lattice match seed material to promote growth of hcp Gd., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Appl. Phys. Lett

Abstract

There is renewed interest in rare-earth elements and gadolinium in particular for a range of studies in coupling physics and applications. However, it is still apparent that synthesis impacts understanding of the intrinsic magnetic properties of thin gadolinium films, particularly for thicknesses of topicality. We report studies on 50nm thick nanogranular polycrystalline gadolinium thin films on SiO2 wafers that demonstrate single-crystal like behavior. The maximum in-plane saturation magnetization at 4K was found to be 4{\pi}MS4K = (2.61{\pm}0.26)T with a coercivity of HC4K = (160{\pm}5)Oe. A maximum Curie point of TC = (293{\pm}2)K was measured via zero-field-cooled - field- cooled magnetization measurements in close agreement with values reported in bulk single crystals. Our measurements revealed magnetic transitions at T1 = (12{\pm}2)K (as deposited samples) and T2 = (22{\pm}2)K (depositions on heated substrates) possibly arising from the interaction of paramagnetic fcc grains with their ferromagnetic hcp counterparts., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, to be publ

16. A 32-day-old girl with a retroperitoneal mass

Abstract

A 32-day-old girl was admitted to a hospital because of a mass in her abdomen. She had been diagnosed prenatally. A CT scan after birth showed the mass was near her left adrenal gland. The adrenal glands are on top of the kidneys. Surgery showed that the mass was part of her lung that had protruded below the diaphragm. Microscopic examination of tissue samples showed that she had a type 2 congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation.

Abstract

Cloacal malformation is an abnormality found in one of every 40,000 to 50,000 newborn females. It occurs when the cloaca, a common canal for urine, genital secretions and feces, remains present throughout the development of the fetus. Normal development results in a different outlet for each system, but this abnormality leads to only one, common opening. This can result in severe complications, particularly involving the kidneys. Early surgical repair can usually provide close to normal functioning and prevent complications, but effective treatment requires accurate imaging of the malformations and of the affected areas in the kidneys. In this study, the imaging results and medical records from 65 infants born with cloacal malformation were reviewed. Included were clinical, imaging, cystoscopic, and surgical data. The information was examined to learn the characteristics of cloacal malformation and its associated complications, and to find ways to improve diagnosis and treatment using imaging techniques. Results showed that X-rays of the malformation could classify its configuration into two groups, either urethral or vaginal. The connection between the bladder and the cloaca was found to be of three different types (by way of the urethra or vesical or by direct connection). Rectal communication was either vaginal, cloacal, or other. A large percentage of the patients had abnormalities of the pelvic structures. These included an accessory urethra, protrusions (diverticula) of the bladder, and duplication of the uterus. Many other abnormalities were found in the urinary and genital tracts, the lower spinal cord, and the kidneys. Both MR imaging and sonography (ultrasound) were of limited value in characterizing and imaging these structures for diagnosis and treatment. 28. Urinary tract refunctionalization after long-term diversion: a 20-year experience with 177 patients

Surgical diversion of the urinary tract can be corrected or undiverted, even many years after the creation of the initial diversion. Experience with 177 patients who underwent undiversion over the past 20 years is reported. The original diversions were performed for various reasons including neurogenic bladder, severe hydronephrosis, failed ureteral reimplantation surgery, cancer, and trauma. Indications for undiversion have expanded greatly in the last 16 years. Reasons for this include development of new techniques such as augmentation plastic repair of the bladder, construction of a female urethra from other tissue, improved reconstruction of the neck of the bladder, and teaching patients to intermittently catheterize themselves. There were 110 male and 67 female patients ranging in ages from 1 to 31 years. The original diversion had been performed 10 or more years earlier in 56 patients (32 percent). Most of the original diversions had been considered permanent procedures. There were 44 patients with only one kidney; one patient was without a kidney, having undergone two unsuccessful transplants. There were no deaths around the time of undiversion; eight late deaths l to 14 years after surgery occurred. 35. CONSTRUCTION OF FEMALE URETHRA USING A BUCCAL MUCOSA GRAFT

Abstract

Introduction: Buccal mucosa graft has been used previously in reconstructing the male urethra, most commonly in patients with complex hypospadias or urethral stricture. To date, there has been no previous description of using buccal mucosa graft in reconstruction of a female urethra. Herein we describe our technique and the results of using a buccal mucosa graft in the reconstruction of difficult female urethral problems. Patients and Methods: Since June of 1994, we used a buccal mucosa graft to reconstruct the bladder neck and urethra in six female patients. Their ages ranged from 3 to 13 years. The underlying pathology included: fibrotic urethra and bladder neck after previous operations for cloacal exstrophy (4 patients), urethral stricture and urethrovaginal fistula iatrogenically induced during treatment of pelvic neuroblastoma (1 patient), and multiple false passages in the previously reconstructed urethra using vaginal mucosa, making clean intermittent catheterization difficult (1 patient). A full-thickness buccal mucosa graft was harvested and tubularized in-situ as a neourethra to the base of the clitoris. In patients with cloacal exstrophy, the bladder neck and urethra were widely exposed transabdominally using the technique of pubic symphysis split (J Urol 142:527-31, 1989). The fibrotic mucosa was excised, leaving periurethral tissue to surround the buccal mucosa graft. Two patients were operated transvaginally in a prone ("skydiving") position to reconstruct the urethra distal to the bladder neck. In these patients, the tubularized buccal mucosa graft was covered with a well vascularized buttock flap (J Ped Surg 33: 180-7, 1998). The patient with iatrogenically induced urethral stricture required a pubic symphysis split while in a prone position and a labial fat pad graft to create a vascularized bed into which the buccal graft tube was placed. Results: All patients with cloacal exstrophy were incontinent prior to bladder neck and urethra reconstruction using buccal mucosa graft, and all attained complete continence postoperatively. These patients, along with the patient who required buccal mucosa graft urethral reconstruction for difficult catheterization, were able to perform clean intermittent catheterization with ease. One patient with urethral stricture and urethrovaginal fistula was able to void per urethram without difficulty. This patient developed a small fistula along the graft, resulting in a minor degree of vaginal voiding, and is awaiting surgical closure. Conclusions: In selected female patients with difficult urethral reconstructive problems, a tubularized free graft taken from the buccal mucosa can be used effectively when local tissue is fibrotic and not well suited for making a supple new urethra., John M. Abstract

All-optical signal processing enables modulation and transmission speeds not achievable using electronics alone. However, its practical applications are limited by the inherently weak nonlinear effects that govern photon-photon interactions in conventional materials, particularly at high switching rates. Here, we show that the recently discovered nonlocal optical behaviour of plasmonic nanorod metamaterials enables an enhanced, ultrafast, nonlinear optical response. We observe a large (80%) change of transmission through a subwavelength thick slab of metamaterial subjected to a low control light fluence of 7 mJ/square-cm, with switching frequencies in the terahertz range. We show that both the response time and the nonlinearity can be engineered by appropriate design of the metamaterial nanostructure.
