Abstract Background Although several studies have found the relationship between essential elements and diabetes, the studies about the association of essential elements with diabetes diagnosed according to an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in a sex- and age-specific manner were limited. To investigate the linear and nonlinear relationship of five essential elements including iron (Fe), copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), and calcium (Ca) with diabetes, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), 2-h postprandial plasma glucose (PPG), and HbA1c and to evaluate the sex- and age-specific heterogeneities in these relationships. Methods A total of 8392 community-dwelling adults were recruited to complete a questionnaire and undergo checkups of anthropometric parameters and serum levels of five metals (Fe, Cu, Zn, Mg, and Ca). The multivariable logistic and linear regression, the restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis, and subgroup analysis were applied to find the associations between the essential elements and the prevalence of diabetes as well as FPG, PPG, and HbA1c. Background: This study aimed to examine the associations of thyroid hormone sensitivity indices, including free triiodothyronine-to-free thyroxine (FT3/FT4) ratio, thyroid feedback quantile-based index by FT4 (TFQIFT4), thyroid-stimulating hormone index (TSHI), and thyrotrophic thyroxine resistance index (TT4RI) with all-cause mortality in euthyroid adults. Methods: The study included 6243 euthyroid adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007–2012. FT3/FT4 ratio, TFQIFT4, TSHI, and TT4RI were calculated. The multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression, restricted cubic spline (RCS), and subgroup analysis were conducted. Results: Individuals in fourth quartile (Q4) had lower all-cause mortality than those in first quartile (Q1) of FT3/FT4 ratio (hazard ratio (HR): 0.70, 95% CI: 0.51, 0.94). Regarding TFQIFT4, individuals in Q4 of TFQIFT4 had a 43% higher all-cause mortality than those in Q1 (HR: 1.43, 95% CI: 1.05, 1.96) (P < 0.05, all). Compared with participants in Q1, no associations of TSHI and TT4RI with mortality were found. TFQIFT4 was linearly and positively associated with mortality. However, the FT3/FT4 ratio showed a U-shaped association with mortality. Conclusions: Increased risk for all-cause mortality was positively associated with TFQIFT4, suggesting that increased risk for all-cause mortality was associated with decreased central sensitivity to thyroid hormones. Furthermore, the FT3/ FT4 ratio showed a U-shaped association with mortality, with an inflection point at 0.5. However, more cohort studies are needed to validate the conclusions.

Abstract High-resolution income projections under different Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) are essential for the climate change research communities to devise climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies. To generate income projections for Washington state, we obtain state-level GDP per capita projections and convert them into projected annual household income. The resulting state-level income projections are subsequently downscaled to the census block-level based on the Longitudinal Origin-Destination Employment Statistics (LODES) dataset. For accuracy assessment, we downscale historical income data from state- level to block- and block group-level and compare the downscaled results against the actual income data from LODES. County-level accuracy assessment is also conducted based on American Community Survey. The results demonstrate a good agreement (Average R2 of 0.67, 0.8, and 0.99 for block-, block group-, and county-level, respectively) between the downscaled income data and the reference data, thereby validating the methodology employed. Our approach is applicable to other states for income projections, which can be utilized by a broader audience, including those involved in demographic analysis, economic research, and urban planning.

BackgroundPrevious studies have revealed the sex-specific features of pituitary–thyroid hormone (TH) actions and the prevalence of thyroid nodules (TNs) in children and adolescents. However, it was unclear in adults. We aimed to investigate the features of pituitary–TH actions in women and men at different ages, and the associations of thyrotropin (TSH), THs, and central sensitivity to THs indices including the thyroid feedback quantile-based index by FT4 (TFQIFT4) and the thyroid feedback quantile-based index by FT3(TFQIFT3) with of TNs in Chinese euthyroid adults.Methods8771 euthyroid adults from the communities in China were involved. Demographic, behavioral, and anthropometric data were gathered through the questionnaires. Ultrasound was performed to evaluate the TNs. TSH and THs levels were measured. The multivariable logistic regression and multivariable ordinal logistic regression were conducted.ResultsTFQIFT3 among both genders, except women aged 43 to 59 years, where it increased slightly. Additionally, there was an age-related decline in TFQIFT4 levels in both women and men at ages < 50 and < 53, respectively, but a marked increase after that. Lower TSH levels were significantly associated with a higher prevalence and lower odds of having fewer TNs using multiple nodules as the base category in both men and women (both P for trend < 0.05). Additionally, lower TFQIFT3 and TFQIFT4 levels were significantly associated with a higher prevalence of TNs in women (both P for trend < 0.05), and lower TFQIFT3 levels were significantly associated with a higher prevalence of TNs in men. Both higher TFQIFT3 and TFQIFT4 levels were significantly associated with higher odds of having fewer TNs using multiple nodules as the base category in women. However, the relationships between TFQIFT4 and the prevalence or number of TNs in men were not found.ConclusionsThe trends of THs, TSH, TFQIFT4, and TFQIFT3 at different ages were sex-dependent. Both TFQIFT4 and TFQIFT3 levels were negatively associated with the prevalence and number of TNs in women. The present results may lead to a better understanding of the sex-specific relationships between the development of the pituitary-TH axis and the formation of TNs.

BackgroundMetabolic syndrome (MetS) and sarcopenia (SP) have emerged as significant public health concerns in contemporary societies, characterized by shared pathophysiological mechanisms and interrelatedness, leading to profound health implications. In this prospective cohort study conducted within a US population, we aimed to examine the influence of MetS and SP on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.MethodsThis study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) III for the years 1999-2006 and 2011-2018, and death outcomes were ascertained by linkage to National Death Index (NDI) records through December 31, 2019. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. In addition, subgroup and sensitivity analyses were conducted to test the robustness of the results.ResultsOver a median follow-up period of 13.3 years (95% CI: 12.8-13.8), 1714 deaths were observed. The groups characterized by MetS−/SP+, MetS+/SP−, and MetS+/SP+ exhibited higher all-cause mortality rates in comparison to the MetS-/SP- group, with the MetS+/SP+ group (HR 1.76, 95% CI: 1.37-2.25) displaying the highest all-cause mortality. Increased cardiovascular mortality was observed in the MetS+/SP− (HR 1.84, 95% CI: 1.24-2.72), and MetS+/SP+ groups (HR 2.39, 95% CI: 1.32-4.35) compared to the MetS−/SP− group, whereas it was not statistically significant in the MetS-/SP+ group. However, among males and individuals aged < 60, the presence of both MetS and SP (MetS+/SP+ group) was found to be significantly associated with a higher risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.ConclusionThe coexistence of MetS and SP increased the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, particularly in males and in nonelderly populations. Individuals with either MetS or SP may require more careful management to prevent the development of other diseases and thereby reduce mortality.

Reduced irrigation in combination with biochar application can improve stomatal anatomy, water relations and intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi), thus having a positive effect on the alleviation of salinity and drought stresses. A split-root pot experiment was executed to explore the effects of two biochar applications (WSP: wheat straw biochar; SWP: soft wood biochar) in combination with three irrigation strategies (FI: full irrigation; DI: deficit irrigation, PRD: partial root-zone drying irrigation) on stomatal anatomy, water relations and WUEi of cotton plants under normal soil (S0, EC=0.36 dS m-1) and saline soil (S1, EC=16.55 dS m-1). The results revealed that both salinity and drought stresses negatively affected plant water relations and reduced stomatal conductance, carbon isotope discrimination (Δ13C), stomatal size (SS) and hydraulic conductance (Kl) while increased leaf abscisic acid (ABA) concentration ([ABA]leaf). However, biochar amendment under salt stress significantly decreased [ABA]leaf while improved leaf water relations, increased Kl, stomatal density (SD), SS, Δ13C and maximum stomatal conductance (gsmax). Meanwhile, compared with FI and DI, PRD plants had greater SD, gsmax, and WUEi but lowered stomatal conductance (gs). Among all treatments, the combined application of WSP and PRD significantly increased SD and gsmax, improved leaf water relations, Kl and [ABA]leaf and WUEi. It is concluded that the altered stomatal features caused by the biochar and irrigation treatments are associated with changes in [ABA]leaf and Kl, and have a major role in affecting plant hydraulic integrity and water use efficiency of cotton exposed to salinity stress.

IntroductionAlthough several studies have explored the associations between single essential metals and serum uric acid (SUA), the study about the essential metal mixture and the interactions of metals for hyperuricemia remains unclear.MethodsWe performed a cross-sectional study to explore the association of the SUA levels with the blood essential metal mixture, including magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn) in Chinese community-dwelling adults (n=1039). The multivariable linear regression, the weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were conducted to estimate the associations of blood essential metals with SUA levels and the BKMR model was also conducted to estimate the interactions of the essential metals on SUA.ResultsIn the multivariable linear regression, the association of blood Mg, Mn, and Cu with SUA was statistically significant, both in considering multiple metals and a single metal. In WQS regression [β=13.59 (95%CI: 5.57, 21.60)] and BKMR models, a positive association was found between the mixture of essential metals in blood and SUA. Specifically, blood Mg and Cu showed a positive association with SUA, while blood Mn showed a negative association. Additionally, no interactions between individual metals on SUA were observed.DiscussionIn conclusion, further attention should be paid to the relationship between the mixture of essential metals in blood and SUA. However, more studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Objective The association of appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM), grip strength and fat-to-muscle ratio (FMR) and the progression of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) are not well known.Materials and methods This study included participants older than 40 years who underwent bioelectrical impedance assessment in Prevalence of Metabolic Diseases and Risk Factors in Shunde (SPEED-Shunde). We measured grip strength with an electronic grip strength metre. ASM and grip strength were adjusted by dividing body mass index (BMI). FMR was calculated as total fat mass to total muscle mass. Liver steatosis and liver fibrosis were evaluated by vibration-controlled transient elastography. Multifactorial logistic regression was used to analyse the relationship between ASM, grip strength, FMR, and MASLD or MASLD-associated liver fibrosis. We performed subgroup analyses according to sex, age and BMI. Interaction tests and linear trend tests were also conducted.Results This study included a total of 3277 participants. FMR was positively associated with MASLD (OR: 1.89, 95% CI: 1.66–2.15) and MASLD-associated liver fibrosis (OR: 1.70, 95% CI: 1.22–2.37). While ASM/BMI (OR: 0.59, 95% CI: 0.52–0.67) or grip strength/BMI (OR: 0.72, 95% CI: 0.66–0.78) were negatively associated with MASLD. Interactions were observed between ASM/BMI and age, grip strength and sex in MASLD, as well as FMR and MASLD-associated liver fibrosis.Conclusion In a middle-to-elderly aged population, FMR was positively associated with the risk of MASLD and MASLD-associated liver fibrosis, and muscle mass and grip strength were negatively associated with MASLD, rather than MASLD-associated liver fibrosis.

AbstractBackground We aimed to investigate the associations between thyroid hormone sensitivity indices and diabetes in euthyroid adults in the United States and China.Methods 2296 euthyroid adults from the NHANES in the United States and 8319 euthyroid adults from the SPEED-Shunde in China were involved. The thyroid sensitivity indices, namely TFQIFT4 and TFQIFT3, were calculated. Multivariable logistic regression, restricted cubic spline analysis, and general ordinal logit regression were utilized.Results In the NHANES, compared with participants in quartile 1st (Q1), those in Q4 of TFQIFT3 (OR 2.12, 95% CI (1.18, 3.81)) and those in Q3 of TFQIFT4 (OR 2.31, 95% CI (1.18, 4.53)) (both P for trend < 0.05) were associated with a greater prevalence of diabetes. In the SPEED-Shunde, compared with participants in Q1, those in Q4 of TFQIFT3 had a greater prevalence of diabetes (OR 1.36, 95% CI (1.11, 1.66) (P for trend < 0.05), while no significant associations between TFQIFT4 and diabetes were found.Conclusions TFQIFT3 was associated with a higher prevalence of diabetes both in the United States and China. However, TFQIFT4 was only associated with a higher prevalence of diabetes in the United States, not in China. Further prospective cohort studies are necessary to validate these findings.

IntroductionThyroid function has a large impact on humans’ metabolism and is affected by iodine levels, but there is a scarcity of studies that elucidate the association between thyroid function and other elements.MethodsWe performed a cross-sectional study on 1,067 adults to evaluate the associations of the common essential metals with thyroid function in adults living in an iodine-adequate area of China. Serum free thyroxine (FT4), free triiodothyronine (FT3), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), and blood metals (zinc, iron, copper, magnesium, manganese, and calcium) were measured. Further, the thyroid hormone sensitivity indexes, FT3:FT4 ratio, and thyrotropin T4 resistance index (TT4RI) were calculated. Linear regression, quantile g-computation, and Bayesian kernel machine regression methods were used to explore the association of metals with thyroid function.ResultsWe found that the TSH levels correlated with copper (negative) and zinc (positive). Iron and copper were positively associated with FT3 and FT4 levels, respectively. Iron (positive) and copper (negative) were correlated with the FT3:FT4 ratio. Furthermore, we found that manganese was inversely correlated with TT4RI, while zinc was positively correlated.DiscussionOur findings suggest that manganese, iron, copper, and zinc levels were strongly correlated with thyroid function, and patients with thyroid disorders are recommended to measure those metals levels.

IntroductionBiochar amendment provides multiple benefits in enhancing crop productivity and soil nutrient availability. However, whether biochar addition affects root morphology and alters plant nutrient uptake and shoot growth under different irrigation regimes remain largely unknown.MethodsA split-root pot experiment with maize (Zea mays L.) was conducted on clay loam soil mixed with 2% (w/w) of wheat-straw (WSP) and softwood (SWP) biochar. The plants were subjected to full (FI), deficit (DI), and alternate partial root-zone drying (PRD) irrigation from the fourth leaf to the grain-filling stage.Results and discussionThe results showed that, compared to plants grown in unamended soils, plants grown in the biochar-amended soils possessed greater total root length, area, diameter, volume, tips, forks, crossings, and root length density, which were further amplified by PRD. Despite a negative effect on soil available phosphorus (P) pool, WSP addition improved soil available nitrogen (N), potassium (K), and calcium (Ca) pool and cation exchange capacity under reduced irrigation. Even though biochar negatively affected nutrient concentrations in shoots as exemplified by lowered N, P, K (except leaf), and Ca concentration, it dramatically enhanced plant total N, P, K, Ca uptake, and biomass. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that the modified root morphology and increased soil available nutrient pools, and consequently, the higher plant total nutrient uptake might have facilitated the enhanced shoot growth and yield of maize plants in biochar-added soils. Biochar amendment further lowered specific leaf area but increased leaf N concentration per area-to-root N concentration per length ratio. All these effects were evident upon WSP amendment. Moreover, PRD outperformed DI in increasing root area-to-leaf area ratio. Overall, these findings suggest that WSP combined with PRD could be a promising strategy to improve the growth and nutrient uptake of maize plants.

Although previous studies have examined the hepatotoxicity of single metal exposure, the associations between metal mixture and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or fibrosis remain unclear. This study investigated the associations of urinary metal mixture with the risks of NAFLD and liver fibrosis in US adults using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2017.01 to 2020.03. Vibration-controlled transient elastography was used to detect the controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) and liver stiffness measurement (LSM), which are indicators of NAFLD and liver fibrosis respectively. Three novel mixture modeling approaches including the Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and quantile g-computation (qgcomp) were used to estimate the associations of the urinary fourteen-metal mixture with Ln CAP and Ln LSM. There were 2283 adults aged over 18 years (1209 women and 1074 men) were included. Among women, urinary metal mixture was positively associated with Ln CAP in the BKMR and qgcomp models (both P 0.05). The metal mixture was not associated with Ln LSM in the three models regardless of genders (all P > 0.05). In conclusion, we observed sex-specific associations between urinary metal mixture and the prevalence of NAFLD in US adults. These findings emphasize the role of environmental heavy metal exposure in the development of NAFLD, and confirm the need for more prospective cohort studies on sex-specific manner.

ObjectiveAlthough phthalates are common environmental pollutants, few studies have focused on the relationship of phthalates exposure with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or liver fibrosis, and especially, the alternative phthalates have been questioned in recent years about whether they are better choices. Thus, this study aimed to explore the associations of exposure to major phthalates or alternative phthalates with NAFLD and liver fibrosis.MethodsData of 1450 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2018 were collected. The urinary metabolite concentrations of di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), diisononyl phthalate (DINP) and diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP) were detected. Controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) and median liver stiffness measurement (LSM) were acquired for quantitative diagnosis of NAFLD and liver fibrosis by vibration-controlled transient elastography. Multivariate logistic regression analysis and linear regression analysis were performed to examine the associations between phthalates and NAFLD and liver fibrosis.ResultsAfter adjustment of the potential factors, the prevalence of NAFLD was significantly elevated among those in the fourth quartile of mono-(2-ethyl-5-carboxypentyl) phthalate (OR, 95%CI = 2.719, 1.296, 5.700, P = 0.016), mono (2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl) phthalate (OR, 95%CI = 2.073, 1.111, 3.867, P = 0.037). No significant association was found between the alternative phthalates and NAFLD. The similar result was gained by linear regression analysis that MECPP was still significantly associated with Ln CAP (Q4 vs. Q1: β, 95%CI = 0.067, 0.017, 0.118, P = 0.027). After adjustment for the same covariates, no significant association between phthalates and liver fibrosis was found in logistics regression analysis.ConclusionsAll in all, higher prevalence of NAFLD is correlated with DEHP but not DINP or DIDP in American adults. There is no significant relationship between phthalates and liver fibrosis defined as LSM ≥ 8 Kpa. Nevertheless, further research is needed to provide evidence of causality.

A new methodology is proposed in this study for active steering of a tram with independently rotating wheels (IRWs). This methodology has been developed specifically to improve the tram’s steering capability and to reduce wheel-rail wear. The tram is represented by a complex dynamic model with a diverse range of operating conditions, and traditional active steering methods cannot ensure that the tram can remain well-controlled throughout the entire range of operating conditions. The linear parameter-varying (LPV)- H ∞ control method proposed in this paper uses variable parameter theory to represent the nonlinearity, the parameter uncertainty, and the external force changes in the IRW. The LPV- H ∞ steering controller can not only ensure the robustness of the uncertain system, but also can balance the complexity and the performance of the controller. This allows the tram to offer good steering performance under various running conditions. The simulation results presented in this research show that application of the proposed control method improves the running performance of the tram and reduces the wheel-rail wear significantly on both straight and curved tracks when compared with the passive case.

BackgroundClinical research results on the relationship between folate and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease are contradictory. Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a recently proposed concept. Evidence about the relationship between serum folate and MAFLD, especially considering the status of serum vitamin C, is scarce. This study was aimed to investigate the association of serum folate levels with the prevalence of MAFLD, and further to analyze the potential impact of serum vitamin C status on their association.MethodsTotally 2,797 participants from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017–2018 were included. Vibration-controlled transient elastography was used to detect liver steatosis and fibrosis. Participants were divided in groups based on the tertiles of serum folate or vitamin C, and the serum folate or vitamin C level in T1 was low. Logistic regression analysis in the complex sample module was performed to illustrate the association of serum folate levels with the prevalence of MAFLD. Stratification analysis by serum vitamin C status was performed as well.ResultsCompared with the serum folate levels of T1 group, participants in the T3 group had 47.9% lower risk of MAFLD [OR = 0.521 (95% CI: 0.401–0.677)]. However, when participants were stratified by serum vitamin C levels, there was no association between the serum folate levels and MAFLD in the T1 or T2 group. Among participants in the T3 group of vitamin C status, participants in the T3 group of serum folate had a 63.6% lower risk of MAFLD compared with the T1 group [OR = 0.364 (95% CI: 0.147–0.903)].ConclusionsHigh serum folate level is associated with lower prevalence of MAFLD, especially in participants with sufficient vitamin C.

Background/PurposeMetabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) was proposed as a new definition to put emphasis on the metabolic aspects of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We aim to compare the cardiovascular and renal burden between MAFLD and NAFLD patients.Methods12183 participants were enrolled in East China. The cardiovascular burden (Framingham risk score and previous cardiovascular diseases (CVD)) and renal burden (eGFR and chronic kidney disease (CKD)) were measured.ResultsThe risk of hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, overweight/obesity, and central obesity of MAFLD patients were higher than those of NAFLD. Patients with MAFLD have a similar or higher beta coefficients in Framingham risk score [beta (95%CI): male 0.062 (0.055,0.069) vs 0.041 (0.033,0.048); female 0.014 (0.012,0.016) vs 0.012 (0.01,0.014)], and higher odds ratio in previous CVD [odds ratio (95%CI): male 1.50 (1.22,1.85) vs 1.35 (1.1,1.66); female 1.58 (1.33,1.87) vs 1.45 (1.22,1.72)], compared with those with NAFLD. However, compared with males with MAFLD, the odds ratio of CKD was higher in those with NAFLD [eGFR: -2.731 (-3.422, -2.041) vs-3.578 (-4.268, -2.887). CKD: 1.44 (1.05,1.96) vs 1.56 (1.14,2.12)]. In female, CKD was only marginally associated with NAFLD [0.8 (0.62,1.02), P=0.075], but not MAFLD [0.87 (0.68,1.11), P=0.268].ConclusionsPatients with MAFLD have a similar or higher risk of future and previous CVD compared with those with NAFLD, but the risk of CKD was higher in male with NAFLD.

Background and objectiveSerum uric acid (UA) is related to many metabolic diseases. However, the association of UA with liver diseases was not very clear. The objective of this study is to clarify the relationship of UA with liver steatosis and fibrosis.MethodsThis is a cross-sectional study of 4364 people of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2018. Liver steatosis and fibrosis were assessed by controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) and liver stiffness measurements (LSM) using Vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE). Linear and logistic regressions were performed.ResultsAfter adjusting for potential confounders, UA levels were associated with the prevalence of liver steatosis [OR=2.097 (95%CI: 1.245, 3.534)] and liver fibrosis [OR=2.983 (95%CI: 1.797, 4.952)]. Furthermore, the results were consistent in the subgroup analyses of males and females.ConclusionsUA levels were positively associated with the prevalence of liver steatosis and fibrosis.

Background: Bone is thought to be the reservoir of the human lead burden, and vitamin D is associated with bone turnover. We aimed to explore whether exposure to lower 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) levels was associated with higher blood lead levels (BLLs) by increasing the bone turnover rate in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Methods: A total of 4103 type 2 diabetic men and postmenopausal women in Shanghai, China, were enrolled in 2018. Their 25(OH)D, β-C-terminal telopeptide (β-CTX), N-MID osteocalcin and procollagen type 1 N-peptide (P1NP) levels were detected. Their BLLs were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. Mediation analyses were performed to identify the possible role that bone turnover played in the underlying mechanisms. Results: In both the men and postmenopausal women, all three bone turnover markers were inversely associated with 25(OH)D and positively associated with the BLL (all P < 0.01) after adjusting for age, current smoking habits, metabolic parameters, duration of diabetes, vitamin D intake, and use of anti-osteoporosis medication. In the mediation analyses, none of the direct associations between 25(OH)D and B LL was significant for the three bone turnover markers, but all three bone turnover markers were found to be significant mediators of the indirect associations between 25(OH )D and BLL. Conclusion: The association between vitamin D and BLL was fully mediated by bone turnover markers in type 2 diabetic patients (mediation effect). This finding suggested that vitamin D may protect against blood lead exposure from the bone reservoir by decreasing bone turnover in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

BackgroundThe association between occurrence of thyroid nodules (TNs) and trace elements detectable in blood are still inconclusive. The present study sought to determine the relationship between selected trace elements and TNs in the iodine-adequate area of Guangdong, China.MethodsA total of 1,048 participants from four communities were enrolled. A number of medical checkups were conducted to collect relevant data on anthropometric parameters, blood pressure, glucose blood levels and lipid profiles, as well as data on thyroid function, presence of thyroid autoantibodies, and trace elements. Presence of TN was diagnosed by ultrasonography.ResultsOf the 1048 participants (49.5 ± 14.4 years old), 543 participants (51.8%) had TNs. Serum copper, magnesium and zinc levels are associated with the presence of TNs among healthy subjects. Subjects with higher levels of zinc, magnesium and copper had 1.23-fold, 1.04-fold, and 1.007-fold increased risks of the prevalence of TNs (P = 0.013, 0.017, and < 0.001, resp). Compared with the first quartile of copper content in serum, participants in the fourth quartile had the highest prevalence of TNs with an odds ratio of 8.90 (95% confidence interval (CI) 5.41, 14.94) among all participants. Women in the third quartile of magnesium level had a 1.86-fold (95%CI 1.05, 3.31) risk of the prevalence of TNs. Subjects in the highest quartile of zinc level had a 1.82-fold (95%CI 1.06, 3.16) risk of the prevalence of TNs in females.ConclusionTNs were found highly prevalent in females in the investigated population from an iodine-adequate area of Guangdong, China. The imbalance of selected trace elements (copper, magnesium and zinc) in the body is related to the presence of TNs among healthy subjects. The observed correlation of copper on TNs warrants further studies.

Background: Lead (Pb) has been suggested as an endocrine-disrupting chemical. However, few studies have investigated the association between chronic Pb exposure and fatty liver disease. Objectives: We aimed to investigate the association of chronic Pb exposure with fatty liver disease and whether the variations of the gut microbiota involve in the mechanism of the fatty liver disease induced by chronic Pb exposure. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 3066 rural participants in East China. Blood lead level (BLL) was detected, and abdominal ultrasonography was used to diagnose hepatic steatosis. Both the definition of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) were used. Wistar rats were randomly divided into two groups and each group was exposed to 0 or 0.05% w/v Pb through drinking water for 28 weeks. The relevant parameters of hepatic lipid metabolism and gut microbiota were analyzed. Results: In humans, after adjusting for potential confounders, the odds of having NAFLD and MAFLD were significantly increased by 54% and 52% in the participants in the fourth BLL quartile (OR 1.54, 95% CI 1.24, 1.91 and OR 1.52, 95% CI 1.22, 1.89). In the rats, chronic Pb exposure induced the increased visceral fat, hepatic steatosis, and dysbiosis of the gut microbiota, including the decrease of richness, diversity, evenness and phylogenetic diversity of the gut microbiota and the significant alternations of the gut microbiota composition, particularly, the decrease of the relative abundance of Coprococcus and Oscillospira at the genus level. Conclusions: Chronic Pb exposure could induce fatty liver disease, which may be associated with the variations of the gut microbiota.

Abstract Background and aims Obesity, especially abdominal obesity, has been considered a risk factor for diabetic complications. Many abdominal obesity indices have been established, including neck circumference (NC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), lipid accumulation product (LAP), visceral adiposity index (VAI) and the Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI). However, studies investigating the associations between these indices and diabetic complications are limited. The objective of this study was to investigate the associations of the abdominal obesity indices with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease (CVD), diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR). Methods A total of 4658 diabetic participants were enrolled from seven communities in Shanghai, China, in 2018. Participants completed questionnaires and underwent blood pressure, glucose, lipid profile, and urine albumin/creatinine ratio measurements; fundus photographs; and anthropometric parameters, including height, weight, waist circumference (WC), NC and hip circumference (HC). Abstract Objective The attraction and influx of monocytes into the retina has been considered a critical step in the development of diabetic retinopathy (DR). However, large population studies about the association between peripheral blood monocyte levels, an inexpensive and easily measurable laboratory index, and DR are limited. Thus, we aimed to investigate the association between peripheral blood monocyte levels and DR. Methods A total of 3223 participants out of 3277 adults with diabetes were enrolled from seven communities in China in this cross-sectional survey. Participants underwent several medical examinations, including the measurement of anthropometric factors, blood pressure, routinely analyzed leukocyte characteristics, glucose, lipid profiles, urine albumin/creatinine ratio and fundus photographs. Results The prevalence of DR among the participants in the highest quartile of peripheral blood monocyte levels significantly decreased by 41% (OR 0.59; 95% CI 0.43, 0.81) compared with the participants in the first quartile (P for trend 0.05). Associations between leukocyte, neutrophil and lymphocyte levels and DR were also not found (all P for trend > 0.05). These associations were all fully adjusted for age, sex, education status, duration of diabetes history, current smoking, BMI, HbA1c, dyslipidemia, systolic blood pressure and insulin therapy. Conclusion Decreased peripheral blood monocyte levels were associated with increased odds of DR after adjusting for potential confounders in diabetic adults. However, causation remains to be demonstrated.

Introduction Exposure to malnutrition in early life has been found to significantly elevate type 2 diabetes risk in adulthood. However, the changes in metabolites resulting from malnutrition in early life have not been studied. The aim of this study was to identify metabolites with levels associated with type 2 diabetes resulting from exposure to China’s Great Famine (1959–1962).Research design and methods Participants were from SPECT-China 2014 and SPECT-China2 2019, two cross-sectional studies performed at the same site. In total, 2171 subjects participated in SPECT-China and SPECT-China2 simultaneously. The sample size of fetal-exposed (1959–1962) versus non-exposed (1963–1974) individuals was 82 vs 79 in 2014 and 97 vs 94 in 2019. Metabolomic profiling was performed between famine-exposed and non-exposed groups.Results Among the different famine exposure groups, the fetal-exposed group (1959–1962) had the greatest incidence rate (12.5%), with an OR of 2.11 (95% CI 1.01 to 4.44), compared with the non-exposed group (1963–1974). Moreover, compared with those in the non-exposed group (1963–1974), four metabolites (indole-3-carbinol (I3C), phosphatidylcholine (PC) (22:6(4Z,7Z,10Z,13Z,16Z,19Z)/16:1(9Z)), pyrimidine, and PC(16:1(9Z)/22:5(4Z,7Z,10Z,13Z,16Z))) showed significantly lower relative intensities in the famine and diabetes groups both in 2014 and 2019. Pyrimidine significantly mediated the association of famine exposure with diabetes, and I3C marginally mediated this association.Conclusions Famine exposure in the fetal period could increase type 2 diabetes risk in adults, even those in their 60s. I3C and pyrimidine are potential mediators of the effects of famine exposure on diabetes development.

Global climate change will modify plants in terms of growth and physiology. To better understand the consequences of this effect, the responses of the leaf water relations and nitrogen (N) use efficiency of barley and tomato plants to elevated CO2 (e[CO2], 800 ppm) combined with progressive drought stress at two levels of N supply (N1, 0.5 g N pot−1 and N2, 1.0 g N pot−1) were studied. The plants were grown in two separate phytotrons at ambient CO2 (a[CO2], 400 ppm) and e[CO2], respectively. The leaf physiological parameters as well as carbon (C) and N concentrations were determined; plant growth, water and N use efficiencies were evaluated. The results showed that e[CO2] increased photosynthesis and water use efficiency (WUE) while decreased specific leaf area (SLA) in both species, whereas N supply level differentially influenced WUE in barley and tomato plants. The abscisic acid (ABA)-induced stomatal closure during progressive soil drying varied between the two species where the stomatal conductance (gs) of barley plants was more sensitive to leaf ABA than tomato plants, though CO2 environment did not affect the response in both species. Compared to a[CO2], e[CO2] reduced plant transpiration rate (Tplant) in barley but not in tomato. e[CO2] increased the leaf C:N ratio ([C:N]leaf) in plants by enhancing leaf C concentration ([C]leaf) in barley and by dilution of leaf N concentration ([N]leaf) in tomato, respectively, but N2 substantially decreased [C:N]leaf, and thus, N treatment was the dominant factor controlling [C:N]leaf. Collectively, appropriate N supply may modulate the acclimation of plants to e[CO2] and soil water deficits. This study provides some novel insights into N management of different plant species for adapting to future drier and CO2-enriched environment.

Abstract Background Associations between sex hormones and vascular remodeling have been extensively studied, but the results vary widely among different races and sex. We aimed to investigate whether total testosterone (TT), estrogen (E2), and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) associate with macrovascular complications and diabetic kidney disease (DKD) among community-dwelling patients with diabetes. Methods A total of 4720 participants with type 2 diabetes were recruited from Shanghai, China. Common carotid artery (CCA) plaques and diameter were assessed by ultrasound. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) was defined by prior diagnosis of coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction or stroke. DKD was defined according to the ADA Guidelines. Results (1) In men, TT was negatively associated with CCA diameter (regression coefficient (β) − 0.044, 95% CI − 0.087, 0). E2 levels were positively associated with CVD and CCA plaque prevalence (OR 1.151, 95% CI 1.038, 1.277 and OR 1.13, 95% CI 1.017, 1.255, respectively). DHEA was negatively associated with CVD (OR 0.809, 95% CI 0.734, 0.893). In postmenopausal women, TT levels were negatively associated with CCA diameter (β − 0.046, 95% CI − 0.083, − 0.010) and positively associated with CVD (OR 1.154, 95% CI 1.038, 1.284). (2) In both men and postmenopausal women, TT levels were negatively associated with the albumin/creatinine ratio and DKD (β − 0.098, 95% CI − 0.154, − 0.043 and OR 0.887, 95% CI 0.790, 0.997 vs. β − 0.084, 95% CI − 0.137, − 0.031 and OR 0.822, 95% CI 0.731, 0.924, respectively) and DHEA levels were positively associated with DKD (OR 1.167, 95% CI 1.038, 1.313 vs. OR 1.251, 95% CI 1.104, 1.418, respectively). Conclusions Our study indicates that macrovascular complications were associated with low TT, DHEA and high E2 in men and with high TT in postmenopausal women. DKD was associated with low TT and high DHEA levels in both genders. Sex hormone replacement therapy requires careful and comprehensive consideration. The objective of this study was to explore the effects of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), strain Bacillus licheniformis, with softwood biochar amendment on potato growth and water use efficiency (WUE) under a deficit irrigation (DI) regime. A pot experiment was conducted in a greenhouse. The results showed that PGPR improved leaf gas exchange rates, including photosynthesis rate, stomatal conductance and transpiration rate at early seedling stage, while tended to depress these parameters gradually until final harvest. The effects of biochar on plant leaf physiology, plant growth and WUE were not evident. Plants were more affected by DI than PGPR inoculation and biochar amendment. DI significantly decreased leaf gas exchange rates after exposure to water treatment for around three weeks, and the negative effect was eliminated at final harvest. At final harvest, DI significantly decreased leaf area, specific leaf area, dry mass of leaf and stem, total dry mass, dry mass increment and plant water use. The synergistical effect of PGPR strain Bacillus licheniformis and DI on plant growth and WUE were not observed in our study. WUE was solely improved by DI, indicating that, compared to PGPR inoculation, DI was a more effective measure to enhance plant WUE.

Aims. Phthalates, which are recognized environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals, are associated with thyroid hormone disruption. We aimed to evaluate the relationship of phthalate metabolites with thyroid function and thyroid homeostasis parameters in type 2 diabetes and to explore whether thyroid autoimmunity status and metformin, the most common antidiabetic drug, may influence such associations. Methods. Concurrent urine and blood samples were collected from 639 participants with type 2 diabetes in the METAL (Environmental Pollutant Exposure and Metabolic Diseases in Shanghai) study. We measured urinary concentrations of thirteen phthalate metabolites along with serum levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), total T4 and T3, free T4 (FT4) and T3 (FT3), thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb), and thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb). Four parameters of thyroid homeostasis, including the sum activity of step-up deiodinases (SPINA-GD), thyroid secretory capacity (SPINA-GT), Jostel’s TSH index (TSHI), and thyrotroph thyroid hormone resistance index (TTSI), were also calculated. Results. Among all participants, after full adjustment, multivariable regression analysis showed that some urine phthalate metabolites were negatively associated with TSH, TSHI, and TTSI levels and positively associated with FT3, T3, SPINA-GD, and SPINA-GT levels. None of the urine phthalate metabolites exhibited a significant association with thyroid autoimmunity. The associations of phthalate metabolites with thyroid function and thyroid homeostasis parameters differed based on thyroid autoantibody and metformin treatment status. Conclusions. Urinary phthalate metabolites may be associated with thyroid function and thyroid homeostasis parameters among participants with type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, our present study suggested that thyroid autoantibody status and metformin treatment status are potential mediators of such associations.

Personal care and consumer products are extensively used and contain various chemicals that are recognized as endocrine disrupting chemicals. Few epidemiological studies measured the associations of these chemicals and metabolites, especially phenols, with bone health. We measured the associations between nine urinary phenol biomarkers and BMD and the subsequent prevalence of osteopenia/osteoporosis. National representative data from US adults aged over 20 years who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2005 to 2010 were used. 2,267 men, 1,145 premenopausal women and 1,033 postmenopausal women were included in the final analyses. Bisphenol A, benzophenone-3, triclosan, butylparaben, ethylparaben, methylparaben, propylparaben, 2,5-dichlorophenol and 2,4-dichlorophenol were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography-isotope dilution tandem mass spectrometry. Paraben concentrations, especially ethyl-, methyl- and propylparabens, were related to greater BMD in the femoral neck and intertrochanter and lumbar spine in men and premenopausal women. 2,4-dichlorophenol concentrations was associated with lower BMD and a higher prevalence of osteopenia + osteoporosis in men. Bisphenol A was associated with a higher prevalence of osteopenia + osteoporosis in the lumbar spine in postmenopausal women. Benzophenone-3 tended to be associated with a higher BMD of femur in men and premenopausal women. In conclusion, certain urinary personal care and consumer product chemicals and metabolites were significantly associated with BMD or osteopenia + osteoporosis. These results further indicate that, in future research, determination of the causal relationships and detection of undelying mechanism could be next important directions.

Introduction: In assessing the development of hyperuricemia in diabetic adults, the role of the sex steroid axis is underappreciated. Furthermore, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) has been recommended as a nutritional supplement. However, is DHEA suitable for diabetic adults with hyperuricemia? This issue has received little attention.Aim: The objective of this study was to investigate the associations between gonadal hormones and uric acid (UA) levels in diabetic adults, paying particular attention to the association between DHEA and UA levels.Methods: We analyzed 4,426 participants out of 4,813 diabetic adults enrolled from seven communities in a cross-sectional survey conducted in 2018. Participants underwent several examinations, including assessments of anthropometric parameters, blood pressure, glucose, lipid profiles, UA, total testosterone (TT), estradiol (E2), the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), the luteinizing hormone (LH), and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA).Results: Among men and compared with individuals in the first quartile, participants in the fourth quartile of TT and FSH had odds of hyperuricemia that were significantly decreased by so much as 48 and 34%, respectively (both P < 0.05). However, participants in the fourth quartile of DHEA had 79% increased odds of hyperuricemia (P < 0.05). Among postmenopausal women, participants in the fourth quartile of DHEA, TT, and LH had odds of hyperuricemia that were significantly increased by 155, 99, and 76%, respectively (all P < 0.05). These associations were adjusted for potential confounding factors.Conclusions: Sex differences were found in the associations between gonadal hormones and UA levels in diabetic men and postmenopausal women, which should be monitored to prevent hyperuricemia when sex hormone treatment, especially DHEA, is administered. Further studies are needed.

We aimed to analyze the association of thyroid parameters with kidney disorders, especially in euthyroid participants. Methods. The data were obtained from a cross-sectional study, the METAL study. Thyroid parameters, including thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4), triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxin (T4), thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb), and thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb), of 4136 participants with type 2 diabetes were measured. Two structure parameters of thyroid homeostasis, including the sum activity of step-up deiodinases (SPINA-GD) and thyroid secretory capacity (SPINA-GT), and two pituitary thyrotropic function indices, including Jostel’s TSH index (TSHI) and the thyrotroph thyroid hormone resistance index (TTSI), were also calculated. Abstract Angiogenesis plays a critical role in the progression and vulnerability of atherosclerotic plaques; however, the orchestration of angiogenesis in atherosclerotic plaque formation remains unclear. The results of microarray analysis, real-time PCR and immunohistochemical analyses showed that Hairy/enhancer of split homologue-1 (Hes-1) expression was significantly decreased, while that of osteopontin (OPN) was increased, in atherosclerotic plaques. Meanwhile, immunofluorescence results demonstrated that both Hes-1 and OPN were expressed in endothelial cells (ECs) of neovessels in atherosclerotic plaques. The results of an in vitro study showed that Hes-1 was downregulated, while OPN was upregulated, in a time- and dose-dependent manner in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) by VEGF treatment. In addition, Hes-1 knockdown was found to have transcriptional promotion effect on OPN expression in HUVECs and enhance OPN-induced angiogenesis in response to VEGF. On the contrary, Hes-1 overexpression inhibited OPN expression in HUVECs and reduced angiogenesis in vitro and in vivo. The results of this study suggest that decreased Hes-1 expression in atherosclerotic plaques exaggerate VEGF-induced angiogenesis by upregulating OPN. Therefore, restoring Hes-1 expression and inhibiting OPN expression may be a promising strategy to prevent vulnerable plaque formation in patients with atherosclerosis.

This case report describes a 53-year-old male patient with persistent hypertension and hypokalaemia. Laboratory tests showed that the patient had hypokalaemia, hypocalcaemia and reduced urine calcium/creatinine. Levels of aldosterone and renin activity were increased significantly. Serum levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone, plasma total cortisol level, 24-h urinary-free cortisol, catecholamines, thyroid stimulating hormone and free tetraiodothyronine were normal. A novel single heterozygous mutation (c.836T> G [E6]) was found after full sequencing of the solute carrier family 12 member 3 ( SLC12A3 ) gene exons. The patient was diagnosed as having primary hypertension with Gitelman syndrome (GS). These findings triggered the careful consideration of whether a monistic or dualist approach to the diagnosis of this patient was the most appropriate. Monism may not always be the most appropriate approach for the diagnosis of coexistent hypertension and hypokalaemia. Consideration should be given to the possibility of the independent existence of distinct diseases (i.e. dualism) when secondary hypertension cannot be confirmed by conventional examinations and when a genetic diagnosis is crucial. As a common cause of hypokalaemia with a high level of clinical phenotypic variation, GS does not conform to the usual diagnostic criteria. It should also be noted that single heterozygous SLC12A3 gene mutations can cause disease symptoms and other genetic mutations might be involved in the pathogenesis of GS.

To identify a new regimen to optimize treatment for patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes (T2DM) by short-term continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) alone. Methods. 60 patients with newly diagnosed T2DM were randomized into two groups (n=30 each) and treated for 2 weeks with CSII alone (CSII group) or with CSII plus sitagliptin (CSII + Sig group). The glycemic variability of the patients was measured using a continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS) for the last 72 hours. A standard meal test was performed before and after the interventions, and the levels of glycated albumin, fasting glucose, fasting C-peptide, postprandial 2 h blood glucose, and postprandial 2 h C-peptide were examined. Results. Compared with the CSII group, the indicators of glycemic variability, such as the mean amplitude of glycemic excursion (MAGE) and the standard deviation of blood glucose (SDBG), were decreased significantly in the CSII + Sig group. The changes before and after treatment in the C-peptide reactivity index (ΔCPI) and the secretory unit of islet in transplantation index (ΔSUIT) indicated a significant improvement in the CSII + Sig group. Conclusions. Add-on therapy with sitagliptin may be an optimized treatment for patients with newly diagnosed T2DM compared with short-term CSII alone.

Objective: The present study aimed to determine whether postoperative fractionated radiotherapy, at a total dose of 35 Gy, affected expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) graft anastomotic stoma healing and neointima formation. Methods: The subrenal abdominal aortas of 20 mongrel dogs were replaced with an ePTFE graft. The dogs were randomly divided into either a radiotherapy or nonradiotherapy control group. Grafts were harvested at 4 or 8 weeks after surgery. Hematoxylin–eosin staining, and immunohistochemistry tests for proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and CD34 were undertaken to analyze the anastomotic healing and neointima formation. Results: The patency rate of grafts was 100% in each group. No disunion, rupture, or aneurysm was observed in the anastomotic stoma. Context: Impaired sensitivity to thyroid hormones has been demonstrated to be positively associated with the prevalence of metabolic disorders. However, the relationship between sensitivity to thyroid hormones and metabolic dysfunction--associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and liver fibrosis remained unclear. Objective: We aimed to determine the associations of thyroid hormone sensitivity indices with MAFLD and its progression to liver fibrosis in Chinese euthyroid adults. Methods: This community-based study included 7906 euthyroid adults. We calculated the thyroid sensitivity indices, including free triiodothyronine to free thyroxine (FT3/FT4) ratio, Thyroid Feedback Quantile-based Index by FT4 (TFQIFT4), and Thyroid Feedback Quantile-based Index by FT3 (TFQIFT3), indicating peripheral and central thyroid hormone sensitivity respectively. Liver steatosis and fibrosis were diagnosed by vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE). Multivariable logistic/linear regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis were conducted. Results: Compared with participants in the first quartile (Q1), the prevalence of MAFLD was increased by 62% in the fourth quartile (Q4) of FT3/ FT4 ratio (OR 1.62; 95% CI [1.38, 1.91]) and by 40% in Q4 of TFQIFT3 (OR 1.40; 95% CI [1.18, 1.65]) (both P < .05). No associations between TFQIFT4 and the prevalence of MAFLD were found. In addition, compared with participants in Q1, the prevalence of liver fibrosis was increased by 45% in Q4 of TFQIFT3 (OR 1.45; 95% CI [1.03, 2.06]) (P < .05) in participants with MAFLD. Conclusion: Impaired central sensitivity to FT3 was associated with MAFLD and its progression to liver fibrosis. More prospective and mechanism studies are warranted to confirm these conclusions.
