The risk assessment of pesticide use on non-target terrestrial plants is currently based on standardized greenhouse tests with a limited number of mostly crop plant species. Highertier tests or assessments of any kind (e.g., field, semi-field, landscape studies) are not standardized. In this study we explored an approach to inform such a higher level by collectingdatasets and information at European scale to characterize the vegetation communities that are likely to grow in the off-field areas of wheat and vine crops. The EUNIS (EuropeanNature Information System) habitat classification was used to identify eight man-made habitats considered characteristic of the off-field areas in the European agricultural landscape.These habitats are spatially identified on the bases of a modelling process where vegetation plots, taken from the European Vegetation Archive, were used as observations and climate,soil, topographic, population density parameters and Remote Sensed Essential Biodiversity Variables as predictors. This modelling results in habitat suitability maps. The habitats arealso described in terms of species frequencies and abundances, and to plant traits underlying possible vulnerability to pesticide exposure requested from the TRY plant trait database.Wheat and vine crop spatial data were derived from EUROSTAT and the QUICKScan methodology was used to combine all these data. We conclude that this method is helpful inreaching the objective as described in this paper. Its potential is that it can be extended probabilistically or linked to plant effect models.

Aim: Biodiversity hot-spots are regions containing evolutionary heritage from ancient or recent geological epochs, i.e. evolutionary 'museums' or 'cradles', respectively. We hypothesize that: (1) there are also 'museums' and 'cradles' within regions - some species pools of particular habitat types contain angiosperm (flowering plants) lineages from ancient geological epochs, others from recent epochs; (2) habitat-specific abiotic factors control the number of angiosperm lineages from a given epoch contained in a given habitat species pool. Location: The flora of the Netherlands. Methods: We studied the world's largest vegetation-plot database and a new, uniquely resolved dated angiosperm phylogeny available for the Netherlands. We characterized species pools of habitat types by a novel concept: epoch-specific lineage diversities. Results: We found that species pools of most habitat types were characterized by over- or underrepresentation of lineages from at least one epoch, dating back to the origin of angiosperms. These patterns are not captured by mean lineage ages. Abiotic environments explained on average 56% and up to 75% of the variance in the number of lineages per epoch, but with opposing effects of the same factor for different epochs. Specifically, warm and dry habitats tend to contain lineages dating back to warm and dry epochs. Identifying lineages from sets of random time intervals rather than from a set of geological epochs significantly reduced relationships with the environment. Main conclusions: Within a region, habitat types differ significantly in the evolutionary heritage they contain from different geological epochs, and these differences are controlled by the environment.

Plantengemeenschappen spelen bij veel ecosysteemfuncties en -diensten een cruciale rol. De bijdrage van plantensoorten hangt af van functionele eigenschappen als het aanbod van nectar en stuifmeel in bloemen. Lokale plantengemeenschappen verschillen sterk in het spectrum aan eigenschappen van de soorten en inzicht in deze variatie kan helpen bij duurzaam beheer en gebruik van deze functionele diversiteit. Stilgestaan wordt bij factoren die de variatie in het aanbod van nectar en stuifmeel in graslanden beïnvloeden.

International audience; Aim Many biologists explain the global richness of lineages and local co-occurrence of lineage members by distinct processes: speciation/extinction versus ecological interactions. Moreover, allopatric distribution, rarity and local competition limit local co-occurrence of species even within species-rich lineages. However, whether and why the global richness of lineages relates to local co-occurrence of lineage members has not been tested.We study angiosperms, and hypothesize that in globally species-rich genera species frequently encounter congeners locally, reflecting (1) random sampling of species pools into local communities and (2) processes of global species production and local survival such as hybridization, niche filling and a reduced risk of extinction.Location Netherlands, South Africa, world-wide.Methods Analysing more than 350,000 plots we quantify per species the observed number of co-occurring congeners as well as the null expectation based on random sampling from species pools. From the literature we quantify the global species richness of genera, and abiotic niche positions and breadths, hybrid status and regional species declines.Results In some genera species frequently encounter congeners locally, while in others congeners are rarely encountered. This is independent of the total number of species encountered, and is consistent between the Netherlands and South Africa. ‘High-co-occurrence genera’ are particularly species rich across the globe, consistently so in most families and even after controlling for niche positions, age and regional richness of genera. Species in high-co-occurrence genera tend to occupy niches that are large and close to congeners’ niches. These species are more often hybrids and rarely decline. Relationships explain little variance (< 10%) but are stronger than expected from random sampling of species rich pools. Main conclusions Local co-occurrence and global species richness are largely independent, but not entirely so, reflecting random sampling of pools into communities, niche partitioning, hybridization and the reduced risk of regional extinction in high-co-occurrence genera. Increased extinction risk in low-co-occurrence genera implies a proportionately high loss of lineages and their evolutionary heritage from local communities.

In de applicatie ‘Hydrologische randvoorwaarden natuur’ kan worden nagezocht welke eisen bepaalde typen natuur stellen aan de waterhuishouding. De applicatie is ontwikkeld in opdracht van STOWA en maakt deel uit van het Waternood- Instrumentarium. Met de applicatie kunnen de vereisten van doeltypen (natuurdoeltypen, habitattypen, beheertypen, of zelf gedefinieerde doeltypen) worden afgeleid uit de vereisten van vegetatietypen die deel uitmaken van de doeltypen. Het gaat hierbij om de randvoorwaarden die planten (vegetaties) stellen aan grondwaterstanden, vochtvoorziening, grondwateraanvoer en overstromingsfrequentie. Ook is aangegeven welke eisen de vegetatietypen stellen aan de zuurgraad, het zoutgehalte en de voedselrijkdom van het grondwater

This report highlights the background and pre-processing of the distribution of plant species, habitats and mammal species. For plants a selection of about 900 taxa has been made, based on 45 Annex I habitat types, which represent a substantial part of European natural and semi-natural vegetation. For animals all species existing in Europe have been taken into account. The data covers more or less all EU28 countries and is pre-processed in three steps to feed the BioScore 2 model. In the first step for each species or habitat type a climate/soil model has been created by using Boosted Regression Models (GBM). On the basis of these models presence/absence maps are derived to define the distribution range of the species/habitat types. In the second step additional knowledge was brought in to further specify the potential habitat within the distribution range, by laying an explicit mask over it, selecting only those land use types (land cover classes) suitable for the occurrence of the habitat type or species. In the third step the effect of human-induced pressures on habitat quality and species occurrence/abundance within the suitable habitats in the calculated distribution ranges was taken into account. The dose-effect relations were calculated on the basis of Generalized Linear Models (GLM). All outcomes of the three steps have been further used by the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) to set up the BioScore 2 model. Dit rapport belicht de achtergrond en voorbewerking van de verspreidingsgegevens van planten, habitats en zoogdieren. Voor planten is een selectie van ongeveer 900 taxa gemaakt op basis van 45 Annex I habitattypen,waarvoor de taxa min of meer typerend zijn. Voor de zoogdieren zijn alle in Europa voorkomende soorten in de analyse betrokken. De gegevens omvatten een groot deel van Europa en zijn in drie stappen bewerkt om uiteindelijk als basis te dienen voor het BioScore 2-model. In de eerste stap is voor iedere soort en habitattype een klimaat/bodem-model opgesteld met behulp van zogenaamde Boosted Regression Models (GBM). Op basis van deze modellen zijnpresentie/absentie-kaarten opgesteld die de potentiële verspreiding van de soorten/habitattypen weergeeft. In de tweede stap is aanvullende kennis ingebracht om het potentiële habitat verder te preciseren. Dit is gedaan door eenoverlap te maken met de CLC-kaart (Corine Land Cover), nadat habitattypen en soorten aan specifieke landgebruiksklassen waren gekoppeld. Vervolgens zijn in de derde stap, binnen de potentiële verspreiding van de soorten en habitats, positieve en negatieve waarnemingen geselecteerd om dosis-effectrelaties op te stellen voor een aantal drukfactoren (o.a. stikstof- en zwaveldepositie, verdroging, fragmentatie). The dosis-effectrelaties zijn berekend op basis van zogenaamde Generalized Linear Models (GLM). De uitkomsten van alle drie de stappen zijn verder gebruikt door het Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving (PBL) om het BioScore 2-model op te stellen.

WetVegEurope is a research project (http://www.sci.muni.cz/botany/vegsci/wetveg) whose goal is to provide a synthesized formalized classification of the aquatic and marsh vegetation across Europe at the level of phytosociological associations. In order to achieve the project objective, a WetVegEurope database has been created (GIVD ID: EU-00-020, http://www.givd.info/ID/EU-00-020), which currently contains 375,212 vegetation plots of aquatic, marsh and wet vegetation types from 33 European countries. The WetVegEurope database includes datasets from pre-existing national and thematic databases and also 10,616 plots previously not digitalized or even unpublished. This database offers an extensive source of data for future studies on aquatic and marsh plant species and vegetation types at the European scale.

Using habitat suitability maps based on vegetation relevés and and amongst others the Copernicus high resolution layer forest, this report describes in detail the method used to produce the probability maps for the EUNIS forest habitat types at level 3. An assessment of these maps has been done for the whole of Slovakia. All the maps are presented in Annex I.

Dit rapport geeft per habitattype een overzicht van de status en trend van de structuur- & functiekenmerken voor de artikel 17-rapportage van de Habitatrichtlijn. Om deze data op reproduceerbare wijze te verkrijgen, is gebruik gemaakt van de veldmetingen die zijn verricht voor het landelijk Meetnet Flora (LMF) en de Landelijke Vegetatie Databank (LVD). De resultaten laten zien dat voor de meeste habitattypen voldoende meetgegevens uit het LMF en de LVD beschikbaar zijn om statistisch betrouwbare uitspraken te doen, alhoewel niet voor alle gevraagde veldmetingen van structuur- en functiekenmerken. De resultaten geven per habitattype weer in hoeverre voldaan wordt aan de gestelde normen voor de abiotische en biotische structuur- en functiekenmerken. Daarnaast worden enkele aanbevelingen gedaan om de analyses in het vervolg te verbeteren

Dit document bevat een beschrijving van de technische omgeving, hulpmiddelen en modellen die van belang zijn voor het beheer van de landelijke vegetatiedatabank. Het is bedoeld om de processen en procedures vast te leggen. Het verkrijgen van kwaliteitsstatus A is hierbij geen doel op zich maar is wel de stip op de horizon waar dit document aan bijdraagt. De landelijke vegetatiedatabank dient ervoor om op een gestructureerde manier gegevens vast te leggen over het voorkomen van vegetaties en daarmee ook van plantensoorten in Nederland. De procedures voor het verzamelen en beheren van deze gegevens zijn beschreven in dit document.

Finally, it presents the habitat typologies used for monitoring, statistical and distribution modelling approaches as developed by the BioHab and EBONE projects.

The creation of an Alaska prototye for the Arctic Vegetation Archive is underway. A survey of key vegetation-plot data fom Arctic Alaska is complete. The vegetation-plot, or releve, data that are appropriate for classification and analysis using the Braun-Blanquet approach were obtained directly from the author, or from literature, and are now nearly all digitized (Table 1).

Dit werkdocument beschrijft een nieuw ontwikkelde methode om aan de hand van vegetatiekundige karakteristieken van vegetatieopnamen de frequentie van zeldzame plantensoorten te voorspellen. De trefkans van zeldzame plantensoorten, zoals doelsoorten, Rode Lijstsoorten of typische Natura 2000-soorten, is laag in het Landelijk Meetnet Flora (LMF). Daardoor is het niet mogelijk om direct vanuit de waarnemingen statistisch betrouwbare trends te bepalen. Het blijkt echter mogelijk om de trefkans van zeldzame soorten bij te schatten aan de hand van het door het computerprogramma ASSOCIA bepaalde vegetatietype en de incompleetheid van de vegetatieopname. Deze nieuwe bijschattingsmethode maakt het mogelijk om jaarlijkse trends van zeldzame plantensoorten te berekenen. Tevens kan de significantie van de trend worden berekend. De methode is geoperationaliseerd en als module ingebouwd in het informatiesysteem SynBioSys. De uitkomsten van de voorspelde frequenties van individuele plantensoorten is gevalideerd op het landelijke niveau per natuurtype voor de soortselectie van planten van de Natuurwaarde 2.0 en voor plantensoorten in de provincie Zuid-Holland. Er blijkt een hoge correlatie te zijn tussen de voorspelde kans op voorkomen en het daadwerkelijk aantreffen van zeldzame soorten

De afgelopen twee jaar is door HBO en MBO onderwijs, in samenwerking met Alterra en werkveld, gewerkt aan het zodanig invullen van SynBioSys dat het bruikbaar is zowel binnen het werkveld als het onderwijs. Als laatste product van het project is tot stand gekomen: Wegwijs in de Natuur: achtergronden, illustratie en toepassingen van het Informatiesysteem SynBioSys.

Current conservation biology suggests that across ecological time-scales specialist species existing in the recent past have left on average fewer descendant populations today than generalist species. Conversely, the speciation literature suggests that on an evolutionary time-scale specialists leave as many or more descendant lineages as generalists, i.e. they have high rates of global diversification. This begs the question: which of these two processes has more influence on the regional scale, i.e. do specialists leave more or fewer descendants than generalists within a region? Location The flora of the Netherlands. Methods We quantified niche volume of 707 plant species from coexistence data and ecological indicator values and used sister taxon comparisons to compare specialist and generalist sister taxa for the relative numbers of descendants across three temporal scales: ecological, microevolutionary and macroevolutionary. We show, first, that specialist species are more likely to be currently declining, i.e. to leave only few descendant populations. Second, specialists are less likely to be currently diversifying into intra-specific taxa. Finally, most specialist clades left fewer descendant species within a region than their generalist sister clades. These results were consistent across sublineages, unbiased by geographic sampling of lineages and environments, and held after accounting for species life histories. Differences between specialist and generalist sister clades increased with clade age, suggesting that they reflect differences in rates at which specialists left descendants (rather than differences in ecological limits to the numbers of specialists and generalists). Main conclusionsSpecialists left only few descendants within a region (i.e. the Netherlands), both at ecological, microevolutionary and macroevolutionary scales. While specialists may leave numerous evolutionary descendants at a global scale, these might be absent from most regions. Humans, by threatening specialist species, may hence further accelerate biotic homogenization with descendants of generalist lineages proliferating within regions while specialist lineages disappear.

Door Alterra is vrij recent het criterium stenoeciteit ontwikkeld (Corporaal, et al, 2011), waarbij de ecologische waarde op een schaalloze manier uitgedrukt is in één getal onder de 100. Het is een eenvoudige graadmeter waarmee je ook correlaties met andere 'velden' kunt aangaan, bijvoorbeeld met landbouweconomische kengetallen of sociaal-economische. Er zijn methodisch nog allerlei onbenutte kansen die opgespoord zouden kunnen worden en die betekenis kunnen hebben voor de rol van EZ in de regio.

Within the last 30 years the role of nitrogen in Central European forests has changed fundamentally from limiting resource to environmental problem. As the retrospective tracking of nutrient availability by soil chemical and biogeochemical measurements faces serious problems, bioindication based on understorey species composition is indispensable for monitoring broad-scale eutrophication. Based on a broad survey of more than 100,000 forest vegetation plots accessible in electronic data-bases from Germany and adjacent countries, we calculated unweighted average Ellenberg nutrient values (mN) as a proxy of plant-available macronutrients. Based on the quantiles of the frequency distribution of mN in a regionally stratified sample, we define five trophic classes, which can be used to compare dimensionless mN values. We studied spatial patterns of average nutrient values within 17 regions and compared the periods from 1899 to 1975 and 1976 to 2006. After 1975 eutrophic (mN > 5.67) and hypertrophic (mN > 6.28) conditions were common everywhere except in the Alps and Saxony-Anhalt, but very oligotrophic conditions (mN

Dit rapport bevat een gebruikershandleiding voor de effectenindicator soorten en de verantwoording van de gegevens. De effectenindicator soorten is een internetapplicatie en dient als hulpmiddel voor vergunningverleners en handhavers bij gemeenten die te maken krijgen met activiteiten in of nabij leefgebieden van soorten beschermd onder de Flora- en faunawet. De effectenindicator geeft een indicatie van de kans op schadelijke effecten op beschermde soorten door activiteiten uit de omgevingsvergunning en watervergunning.

Model for Nature Policy (MNP) is ontwikkeld om op nationale of regionale schaal de status van de biodiversiteit te beoordelen. MNP is al geparameteriseerd voor dagvlinders en broedvogels; dit werkdocument bespreekt de toevoeging van vaatplanten. Hiervoor zijn optimale en suboptimale ruimte-, milieu- en watercondities voor plantendoelsoorten bepaald op basis van SynBioSys, neergeschaalde natuurdoeltypenkaart, kritische waarden voor stikstofdepositie en GVGinformatie uit Waternood. We concluderen dat het modelleren van plantensoorten met MNP moeilijker blijkt dan voor de soortgroepen vlinders en vogels; voor 40% van de plantensoorten kon een bruikbaar model gemaakt worden. De huidige analyses laten zien dat voor slechts een beperkt aantal plantensoorten ruimte de beperkende factor is voor duurzaam voorkomen. Milieu- en watercondities doen er meer toe, wat in lijn is met de huidige wetenschappelijke aanpak in veel modellen.

De participatie van de burger in het beleidsproces is de laatste jaren een steeds belangrijker aandachtspunt geworden. De doelstelling van dit onderzoek is om op basis van een voorbeeld (een casus) de toepasbaarheid van nieuwe geo-informatie en communicatietechnologieën (Geo-ICT) voor interactieve en participatieve processen te testen en te evalueren. In overleg met Programmadirectie Natura 2000 is besloten om een mobiele applicatie te realiseren. Deze applicatie is getest en geëvalueerd. Dit onderzoek heeft aangetoond dat het inzetten van een mobiele applicatie mogelijk is voor de communicatie tussen overheid en maatschappij. Ook heeft de applicatie beleidsmedewerkers en medewerkers van directie Communicatie van EL&I meer bewust gemaakt van nieuwe communicatiemogelijkheden met burgers. Wel moet de kanttekening geplaatst worden dat niet onderzocht is wat de bijdrage van deze applicatie is aan burgerparticipatie . Het belangrijkste voor goede participatie is een goed verlopend proces, de hulpmiddelen van Geo-ICT zijn daar ondergeschikt aan. Zij komen alleen goed tot hun recht als ze op de juiste manier in een goedlopend proces worden gebruikt.

Dit document is de gebruikershandleiding van de Audittrail Natura 2000. Deze audittrail is een applicatie die ontwikkeld is door Alterra in opdracht van de Programmadirectie Natura 2000 van het ministerie van EL&I. De audittrail ontsluit een groot aantal bestanden (documenten en GIS-kaarten) die zijn opgesteld gedurende het traject van opstellen aanwijzingsbesluiten Natura 2000. De audittrail vervult in die zin een archieffunctie. Met het instrument kunnen medewerkers van het ministerie van EL&I deze bestanden raadplegen in geval van bijvoorbeeld Kamervragen of het beantwoorden van zienswijzen. De applicatie kan worden geraadpleegd via internet maar is niet openbaar toegankelijk. Het beheer en onderhoud vindt plaats bij Alterra.

Er is een dBase gemaakt waarin op basis van expertkennis voor ruim 1750 Nederlandse plantensoorten ieder afzonderlijk op grond van de amplitudo’s van zeven milieuvariabelen (trofie, zuurgraad, zoutgehalte, vocht, bodemtextuur en bodemdynamiek en daglichttoestand) hun stenoeciteit berekend is. De uitkomst is gecheckt door de invoergegevens te vergelijken met actuele meetgegevens. De resultaten zijn gunstig, ook wat betreft de correlatie met plantensociologische data. Voor het eerst is de ecologie van de stadsplanten systematisch bepaald. Het blijkt dat onze floristische zorgenkinderen alle ecologisch zeer kieskeurig zijn. Het risico van uitsterven van soorten valt samen met een stenoeciteit van 26,5 en minder. Het wordt aanbevolen dit begrip ook voor andere groepen organismen toe te passen, waarvoor samenwerking met andere kennisdragers essentieel is. Door de bondigheid van de notie is het mogelijk om correlaties te onderzoeken met tal van data uit andere kennisdomeinen. Stenoeciteit kan ons in geografisch opzicht goed behulpzaam zijn om gebieden met relatief veel of weinig kieskeurige soorten aan te geven. Stenoeciteit past goed als maat én meetlat om bijvoorbeeld zowel nationaal als internationaal over gebiedskwaliteit te communiceren en bij realisatie van te verwachten nieuw EU-beleid voor GLB- of CAPmaatregelen (landbouw).

BioScore offers a European biodiversity impact assessment tool. The tool contains indicator values on the ecological preferences of more than 1000 species of birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish, butterflies, dragonflies, aquatic macro-invertebrates and vascular plants. These values are linked to policy-related pressures and environmental variables.

During the last decade many electronic databases of vegetation plots, mainly phytosociological relevés, were established in different European countries. These databases contain information which is extremely valuable for both testing various macroecological hypotheses and for nature conservation surveying or monitoring. The aim of this paper is to provide estimates of the number of vegetation plots there are in Europe, how many are stored in an electronic format and to assess their distribution across European countries and regions.We sent a questionnaire to the managers of national or regional databases of vegetation plots and other prominent vegetation ecologists. Meta-data obtained in this way indicate that there are > 4,300,000 vegetation-plot records in Europe, of which > 1,800,000 are already stored electronically. Of the electronic plots, 60% are stored in TURBOVEG databases. Most plot records probably exist in Germany, the Netherlands, France, Poland, Spain, Czech Republic, Italy, UK, Switzerland and Austria. The largest numbers of plots per unit area are in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and countries of central Europe. The most computerized plots per country exist in the Netherlands (600,000), followed by France, the Czech Republic and the UK. Due to its strong phytosociological tradition, Europe has many more vegetation plots than any other part of the world. This wealth of unique ecological information is a challenge for future biodiversity studies. With the alarming loss in biodiversity and environmental problems like global warming and ongoing changes in land use, there is an urgent need for wide-scale scientific and applied vegetation research. Developments of information systems such as SynBioSys Europe and facilitation of data flow between the national and regional databases should make it easier to use these vegetation-plot data

Nederland heeft voor de soorten en habitattypen van de VHR landelijke doelstellingen geformuleerd. Dit onderzoek analyseert voor welke soorten en habitattypen de realisatie van de landelijke doelen afdoende geborgd is via het bestaand natuurbeleid (Natura 2000, EHS, Programma Beheer, soortenbeleid, gedragscodes, leefgebiedenbenadering) en voor welke niet. Onderzoek in samenwerking met Particulier Gegevensbeherende Organisaties (PGO), namelijk EIS, FLORON, SOVON, VZZ, BLWG, RAVON en Vlinderstichting

Vanwege de Habitatrichtlijn zijn in Nederland een groot aantal natuurgebieden aangewezen waar habitattypen voorkomen die op Europese schaal bedreigd zijn en extra bescherming behoeven. Voor het beheer van deze gebieden is inzicht nodig in de eisen die de habitattypen stellen aan de milieucondities. Daarom heeft Directie Kennis (LNV) aan onderzoeksinstelling KWR gevraagd aan te geven wat deze ecologische vereisten zijn. Dit artikel gaat in op hoe de ecologische vereisten bepaald zijn en laat zien hoe ze kunnen worden geraadpleegd op de Natura 2000-website die Alterra heeft ontwikeld

In dit rapport wordt een advies gegeven hoe gegevens voor de rapportage van de Habitatrichtlijn in 2013 kunnen worden verzameld. In deze rapportage wordt de landelijke staat van instandhouding van habitattypen beoordeeld aan de hand van de vier aspecten verspreidingsgebied, oppervlakte, structuur en functie en toekomstperspectief. Geadviseerd wordt om zoveel mogelijk gebruik te maken van bestaande meetprogramma’s en deze volgens een standaardprocedure om te zetten tot landelijke gegevens.
