Critical Offset Magnetic PArticle SpectroScopy (COMPASS) is a new method that allows to detect slight changes in the mobility of particles in a solution very sensitively. While first applications in detecting biomarkers such as SARS CoV 2 antibodies show very promising results, the full potential of the technique and the underlying physical effects were yet only considered superficially. Current bioassays for detection of antibodies or antigens such as ELISA (Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay) are relatively inflexible, expensive and time-consuming. Upcoming methods, such as ACS (AC susceptometry) or MPS (Magnetic Particle Spectroscopy), exploit the magnetization response of functionalized MNP ensembles to assess specific information about the MNP mobility as well as conjugations of chemical or biological compounds on their surface. Both methods have shown promising results in the past but cannot reach the sensitivity of above-mentioned techniques. We used a novel method based on a modified MPS being sensitive to minimal changes in mobility of MNP ensembles. This facilitates robust and easy-to-handle measurements of minimal changes in the diameter of MNPs. As an example, we detected SARS-CoV-2 antibodies binding to the S1 antigen on the surface of functionalized MNPs. India’s demand for electricity has recently been increasing at one of the fastest rates of any country in the world. Among renewables, hydropower plays a crucial role as a mature, cost-effective, and reliable power generation technology. India’s Northeast (Brahmaputra Basin) holds an immense hydropower potential of 63 gigawatts, which to this day remains virtually untapped. There are 20 projects in the pipeline with a capacity of greater than 1000 megawatts; among them are both the largest hydropower projects of India as well as some of the largest transmission schemes of anywhere worldwide. Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh are at the forefront of initiatives to exploit this potential, mainly through private developers and as run-of-river schemes. The government of Arunachal alone has to date awarded 153 hydropower projects with a cumulative capacity of 53.2 GW. The exploitation of hydropower resources is also of crucial geopolitical relevance, both nationally (the Northeast is a vulnerable and conflict-ridden region distinct from mainland India) as well as internationally. China claims Arunachal as its own territory and is developing even more large-scale projects upstream. Additionally, India includes the huge hydropower potential of Bhutan in its own development plans. Most of the forthcoming hydropower projects, those from both the public and private sectors, have been considerably delayed hitherto. The major reasons for this are finance- and tariff-related issues, technical problems, difficulties faced in securing land acquisitions, environmental concerns, and heavy anti-dam public agitation. PR China's impressive economic growth is focusing mainly on its eastern and southern coastal regions. Yunnan province of SW-China, famous for China's highest bio-, geo- and ethnic diversity, is not benefiting neither in the economic growth nor in foreign direct investment. Regarding its per capita GDP Yunnan is even one of the poorest provinces of China. Despite these economic disadvantages the province has some major benefits. First is Yunnan, often referred as Southeast Asia's and China's watertower, developing to China's key supplier of electric energy. To sustain its impressive economic growth, PR China is aggressively developing its energy sector. Regenerative energy, mainly hydropower, plays a major role in its present and future energy sector strategy, making Yunnan due to its (physio-) geographic suitability, to the prime power supplier to China's booming coastal regions as well as to Thailand and Northern Viet Nam. This development is mainly based on controversial large hydropower projects, but unlike other global regions also on greed feeding small hydropower projects (SHPs). Yunnan's second major benefit is its geopolitical location sharing a 4,000 km long border to Myanmar, Laos and Viet Nam which makes the province to China's gateway towards Southeast Asia and India. Massive investment into Yunnan's infrastructure has to be seen also in this geopolitical context as well as in Yunnan's integration in two major subregional economic cooperation schemes, the Greater Mekong Subregion as well as the track II Kunming initiative. The article analyses the present state of Yunnan's aggressively developing hydropower and infrastructure sector and integrates the caused rapid dynamic into a more general context.
