The rapid expansion of palm oil cultivation has remarkably influenced the social structure in rural areas, particularly the socioeconomic and ecological aspects. Social interaction in the palm oil area has certain characteristics and patterns. The unresourceful pattern within the community around valuable natural resources often creates social conflict among stakeholders. This study describes the relationship pattern between the key stakeholders in Keban Agung, South Sumatera Province, Indonesia. It also explores how social structure and people within this area influence each other. We use a qualitative approach to collect a broad perspective, including in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. Hence, this study is beneficial to investigate a suitable approach that can mitigate diverse interests, especially in economic, social, and environmental aspects. Our objective is to study the structuration and agency process throughout palm oil expansion. In addition, we examine the current collective process in mitigating social-environmental conflicts. We found that the social structure in our research site is strong, remarkably influencing the overall circumstances. However, it poses a challenge given the inflexibility of the current agency process, especially for locals, who seek to modify key aspects within the structure.

Recently, capacity building has been named the government’s target in evaluating strengthening land function cycle collaboration in reducing disaster conflicts due to palm oil expansion. Disaster conflicts over palm oil plantations are the main cause of the fundamental transition of environmental culture and customs, especially concerning the welfare capacity of indigenous people in Jambi Province, Indonesia. This article aims to combine information on decision hierarchies and Geographical Information System (GIS) imaging applications to assess complaints of disaster risk in the development of palm oil clusters on indigenous welfare factors due to the palm oil boom in eight Rokan hamlets, Jambi. The combination of the Analytical Hierarchy Process simulation and GIS method in the GeoDa density test is used synergistically to analyze the following criteria for disaster causes: land disputes, water pollution, habitat scarcity, drought/forest fires, floods, and crop failure. The results of the disaster hierarchy show that the priority criteria are land disputes followed by drought/forest fires and floods. Meanwhile, the answer to alternative stakeholder decisions is the regional government according to predictions from the findings of the frequency of resolution of conflicts that have occurred in the past. In addition, the GIS density results detected six Rokan hamlets in Jambi having very high and high conflicts, but two hamlets had no disaster conflict incidents. A capacity building approach in the social, economic, and environmental fields is one of the solutions in minimizing land conflicts caused by palm oil expansion.

Solid waste management is a complex issue, and this was especially true during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. Several challenges related to this issue emerged because of the pandemic, during which countries with limited resources heavily relied on community participation. This study investigates the factors that contribute to the collective action of urban communities in waste management as a solution to raising awareness. This study adopted a quantitative method that incorporated four independent variables and one dependent variable with a 4-point Likert scale questionnaire. The data were collected through a survey using a purposive sampling method. The data collected are proportional because there is no sampling frame in this study. An analysis of the 200 samples collected in Jakarta reveals that community participation, social norms, social influence, and socioeconomic status impact collective action. However, the result from an ordinal regression analysis only shows community participation and social influence as significant variables with corresponding odds ratios of .263/.379 and .053/.168 for every one-unit increase. This study concludes that higher community participation and social influence will likely affect people’s collective action in waste management. Policies and programs incorporating community participation and social influence can be implemented based on the findings to tackle waste management awareness issues.

The building sector has contributed to reducing carbon emissions and energy consumption by implementing green buildings in the last decade. Green building performance evaluation studies can be evidence to the community about the advantages of implementing sustainability concepts in the building sector, such as through Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE). Several POE studies have been conducted to measure building performance. Nevertheless, only a few literature studies about POE specifically for Green Building. Thus, this study aims to conduct a review about POE in green buildings literature, to 1) identify the prominent institutions, countries, publishers, authors, and keywords of this topic; 2) identify the gaps in building types, and green building standards of this research topic; 3) identify green building standards, building types, countries, POE purposes, indicators, and analysis methods used of selected articles. This article's method uses bibliometric and scientometric analysis using VOSviewer, a database set from Scopus. The data uses 116 articles, 249 institutions, 27 countries, 48 sources, 326 authors, and 897 keywords related to POE studies in green buildings. Many impacts occur due to oil palm cultivation. One of them is a conflict that occurred in some regions, especially in Jambi Province in Indonesia. Most of the conflicts that occurred are related to natural resources. Disputes can be more complicated when there is any part of the land belongs to the government. Commonly, 30% of the plantations is owned by plasma land, while the remaining 70% is owned by nucleus land. Conflicts occurred due to the smallholders’ position, which is a weak party in land tenure. The smallholders’ low income was partly due to the high price of fertilizers, the toke’s (middleman) low price, and related transportation problems. Differences in individual perceptions are also one of the conflicts that occur. The purpose of this study was to understand more deeply the conflict between smallholders, especially independent smallholders, and the company oil palm that occurred. By using soft system method-based action research, real-world primary data were collected through in-depth interviews with stakeholders (local government, smallholders, companies, and NGO activists) in Jambi. This article found that this system is also implemented in oil palm plantations in Indonesia. Independent smallholder oil palms also consider that community engagement should be involved as a learning effort. Therefore, social interaction and community involvement, through approaches with the government, companies, and oil palm planters in forms of social interaction and training, need to be applied to minimize oil palm conflicts. It is suggested that further research can provide a study, explanation, and implementation of existing policies so that the obligations and rights of smallholder oil palms and plantation companies do not cause oil palm conflicts.

Gender mainstreaming is one of the Indonesian central government's alternative programs to achieve gender equality. Gender inequality is experienced by women, especially in underprivileged conditions. Gender mainstreaming to address environmental concerns and the lagging and oppression of the environment's development. Moreover, women, as pioneers of their households, must find ways to survive in environments where massive exploitation has drastically reduced the ability to access natural resourses as a daily support system. It is important that equitable development for all genders to provide a sound environment and create a creative economy to improve living standards takes place. This research employs a qualitative method, an interview conducted with one informant from Deputy Assistant of Gender Equality in Infrastructure and Environment, Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection of the Republic of Indonesia, as well as literature research. This approach discusses the correlation between women and the environment in development to reduce poverty. Ecofeminist theory is used as a foundation to guide this research; therefore, this theoretical base provides a general description of the results regarding the correlation between women and the environment in terms of reducing poverty towards sustainable development in Indonesia. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection of the Republic of Indonesia, NGOs and communities (women) are involved in increasing gender participation to reduce poverty in several Indonesian districts. Nevertheless, it must be emphasized that each stakeholder has a role in development, including in monitoring law enforcement and related policy instruments. In this case the ecofeminism perspective is seen as an alternative to rehabilitating the environment to create a sustainable way of living, especially in terms of reducing poverty, in Indonesia. Aligned with gender mainstreaming in social capital, ecofeminism aims to empower women to preserve the natural environment or natural resources that will be managed by women in the local community. Indonesia developed the Smallholder Plantation Scheme (PIR) in the early 1980s, making smallholders an important part of the national scale. Increasing smallholder yields is an important instrument for increasing local income and livelihoods. However, small-scale oil palm expansion has problems with low productivity and quality of production. Therefore, to increase their productivity and improve their cultivation, this study measures the importance of planting behavior and specific treatment of farmers’ prosperity and productivity. To measure the possible significant differences between and within groups, a statistical approach, ANOVA, has been used while Spearman’s correlation matrix also has been used to measure the correlation between variables. This study finds that good seed treatment and adequate doses of fertilizer are important for farmers’ prosperity and productivity. Smallholder farmers have the least expenditure but the highest average production and income with the most extended growing age when compared with the other two groups of smallholder farmers. Even though the number of seeds used was the smallest, the success rate of smallholder planting was the highest. The optimal use of fertilizer and seed care alone is not significant enough to increase yields. It is a combination of other factors such as planting management practices, drainage capacity and soil substrate properties, climate characteristics, rainfall distribution, nutrient supply, and prevention of plant diseases and also determining maximum yield.

The status of the availability of water resources in DKI (Indonesia’s Special Region of) Jakarta has reached a critical phase. Determination of progressive tariffs by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government in 2007 aimed to encourage water users to use water resources rationally and in a sustainable way. However, since the launch of the policy, there has been no evaluation to determine the effectiveness of these progressive tariffs. This research analysed empirical data to examine the effect of policy interventions on water use behaviour in DKI Jakarta. An analysis was carried out by calculating water usage before progressive tariffs were applied and comparing them to water use after the tariffs were applied. Another analysis calculated the number of customers before and after the implementation of progressive tariffs and compared the changes. The increase in water prices plotted are stated in nominal value by assuming the average level of inflation in Jakarta (especially the price of water) was nearly under 2 percent and the price of water was not controlled by the market mechanism The results of this study indicate that before progressive tariffs were applied, water consumption had declined despite an increase in the number of customers, however, water consumption increased after the implementation. This shows that progressive tariffs are effective instruments to distribute clean water access through cross-subsidies, however, it has no effect on consumption levels.

Domestic violence has long been an adversity, which many women have to endure and even accept, especially in places where patriarchy reigns. Unlike other forms of violence against women, domestic violence is particularly special because of its private and sensitive nature. In the island of Rote in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, domestic violence is a serious social and cultural issue. People in Rote continue to practice their customary laws despite formal state laws that offer better justice for victims, at least from the perspective of women's rights and feminism. This article elaborates on customary laws used to settle domestic violence cases in Rote Island, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The research is structured into three parts. The first part discusses the existing formal state laws and analyzes its norms against the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), the second part highlights the culture and domestic violence in Rote Island, and the third part explores the three choices of laws used in Rote Island to resolve cases of domestic violence, within it also the discussion of how these laws coexist in that regard. Stories of these settlements were gained through qualitative research in Rote. Semi-structured interviews were conducted towards women, church leaders, maneleo (the head of clan who acts as a medium for parties in dispute), and adat (traditional cultural group) members. Focus Group Discussions (FGD) were conducted prior to the interviews to gain general knowledge of the customary practices on the island. It was found that the belis (dowry system) in Rote implies that women are required to obey the men because by belis the men have 'bought' the women. The belis strengthens the patriarchal culture in East Nusa Tenggara in general and in Rote Island. The findings of this paper also show that customary law and church law are the communities' first option when it comes to resolving cases of domestic violence, although the formal state law normatively offers better protection and justice for victims. This study aims to formulate recommendations for water conservation strategies through solving the causes of water scarcity. Through a qualitative approach, the study was conducted through a review of secondary data sourced from institutions related to the research topic, accompanied by an analysis review of relevant literatures. Secondary data obtained shows that the majority of urban communities choose boreholes/pumps and piped water as the main SAM for purposes other than drinking, while drinking is dominated by refill water. Among the strategies identified, NbS (Nature-based Solution) based on ecosystem strengthening and economic valuation through Payment for Ecosystem Service (PES) will support sustainable natural resource planning in urban areas by considering ecological aspects and community welfare. Sustainable water management in urban areas requires a synergy of driving factors such as policy formulation based on ecological sustainability, involvement of stakeholders with effective coordination, and community involvement in planning and management. Therefore, alignment of perceptions and goals between actors is required to achieve strategic steps and sustainable natural resource governance planning as an inevitable response to climate change. In an increasingly digital era, the spread of negative content on social networks and online platforms has become an increasingly profound issue, especially in religious aspects. This study examines the evolving dynamics between religion and new media technologies and their combined impact on humans' relationship with nature. As society becomes increasingly connected through digital media, the role of religion in shaping environmental ethics and behavior becomes increasingly important. This research aims to explore how religion and new media technologies intersect and have the potential to change our relationship with the environment. This research examines how society understands information and communication technology. How do Indonesian people, especially in Bali Province, understand the spread of negative content and the benefits of technological developments for religious and human relations. The method used in this research is a quantitative approach using Microsoft Excel to collect data and using SPSS version 26 software to process the data. The total number of respondents was 92 people. Univariate analysis is used to see each variable's frequency and percentage. The research was conducted in Bali Province around September 2023. The study revealed that 73% of the respondents had more than six years of experience using the Internet. Additionally, 59 respondents acknowledged their proficiency with technological usage. Efforts to enhance digital literacy in society are necessary due to the misuse of technology by a few individuals. Bulungan Regency as the capital of North Kalimantan Province needs accelerated development to realize its vision as an industrial-based food center. Among the aspects that still need to be worked out are the availability of human resources (HR) as the main driver of the regional economy. It is hoped that the presence of the Transmigrant Community with an agricultural background in the Salimbatu area can make a positive contribution to efforts to accelerate development in Bulungan Regency. By using a combination of literature review study methods reinforced with GIS analysis, this study seeks to reveal the socio-cultural structure of the people in the Salimbatu Transmigration Area and its contribution to improving the agricultural sector to accelerate regional development. The results obtained from this study indicate that the presence of the Transmigrant Community in the Salimbatu area has a proportion where 54.35% of them are native Bulungan people, while the remaining 45.65% are migrants through the Transmigration program. The socio-cultural proportion of the peasant community through the transmigration program to strengthen the regional economy in the agricultural sector in Bulungan Regency currently has not had an optimal impact.

Indonesia as a country with a large population has challenges in being able to provide housing that applies a sustainable concept but still has to be affordable for the community. Therefore, this research aims to compare the implementation of the three pillars of sustainability from several Neighborhood Sustainability Assessment. The method used in this research is a comparative analysis in assessing the concept of sustainable in subsidized housing and descriptive analysis to provide suggestions for improving the sustainable application in subsidized housing. The assessment carried out by the researchers using direct observation, masterplan interpretation and satellite photo interpretation. The results of the assessment using the Neighborhood Sustainability Assessment of several countries on subsidized housing for Perumnas Parung Panjang obtained silver level from LEED, pass level from BREEAM and bronze level from Greenship. On the other hand, from the aspect of the three pillars of sustainability, it is known that the economic pillars (36.27%) and the environmental pillars (32.14%) have a lower percentage of variable fulfilment compared to the social pillars (61.59%), so that several corrective steps are needed to maximize the application of the concept of sustainable and obtained a better NSA assessment score.
