Abstract

Humans impact terrestrial, marine and freshwater ecosystems, yet many broad-scale studies have found no systematic, negative biodiversity changes (for example, decreasing abundance or taxon richness). Here we show that mixed biodiversity responses may arise because community metrics show variable responses to anthropogenic impacts across broad spatial scales. We first quantified temporal trends in anthropogenic impacts for 1,365 riverine invertebrate communities from 23 European countries, based on similarity to least-impacted reference communities. Reference comparisons provide necessary, but often missing, baselines for evaluating whether communities are negatively impacted or have improved (less or more similar, respectively). We then determined whether changing impacts were consistently reflected in metrics of community abundance, taxon richness, evenness and composition. Invertebrate communities improved, that is, became more similar to reference conditions, from 1992 until the 2010s, after which improvements plateaued. Improvements were generally reflected by higher taxon richness, providing evidence that certain community metrics can broadly indicate anthropogenic impacts. However, richness responses were highly variable among sites, and we found no consistent responses in community abundance, evenness or composition. These findings suggest that, without sufficient data and careful metric selection, many common community metrics cannot reliably reflect anthropogenic impacts, helping explain the prevalence of mixed biodiversity trends.

Abstract

Arterial hypertension leads to modification of the cerebral circulation. This results from the changes in the properties of the large arteries, the correlation between large and small arteries, and the local and systemic molecular factors. The current literature indicates several mechanical components that can modify arterial pressure and flow in the brain: 1. Functionally significant arterial stenosis (with reference to the completed or not-completed Willis circle pattern); 2. Elastic properties of the arteries that are transmitted to the microcirculation (vascular wall characteristics and central aortic pressure); including vascular modification by the general atherosclerotic burden; 3. Small vessel dysfunction; 4. Systemic and local biochemical factors that can influence cerebral microcirculation. The microvascular endothelium is the end of the arterial tree - the ultimate target organ, which responds to mechanical and biochemical, systemic, and local molecular stimuli in almost one and the same way. It is modified by systemic vascular and local metabolic requirements. When microvascular endothelium is impaired, a uniform endothelial "response to injury" follows, abnormal neurohormonal and paracrine signaling, which leads to disruption of the blood-brain barrier and the neurovascular coupling, molecular spill out, modification of local and systemic flow, which in turn closes the vicious circle of endothelial impairment. Large arteries' properties influence microvasculature and local endothelial paracrine and mechanical function. The exact correlation between large and small vessels, morphological characteristics of the aorta and cerebral microcirculation is not fully understood. Further studies of this correlation may have potential implications for the clinical practice. In this review, we herein discuss the possible interaction between the characteristics of large arteries, the small cerebral arteries, and the vascular endothelium in terms of the significance of this process for the cerebral perfusion. Abstract

Owing to a long history of anthropogenic pressures, freshwater ecosystems are among the most vulnerable to biodiversity loss 1. Mitigation measures, including wastewater treatment and hydromorphological restoration, have aimed to improve environmental quality and foster the recovery of freshwater biodiversity 2. Here, using 1,816 time series of freshwater invertebrate communities collected across 22 European countries between 1968 and 2020, we quantified temporal trends in taxonomic and functional diversity and their responses to environmental pressures and gradients. We observed overall increases in taxon richness (0.73% per year), functional richness (2.4% per year) and abundance (1.17% per year). However, these increases primarily occurred before the 2010s, and have since plateaued. Freshwater communities downstream of dams, urban areas and cropland were less likely to experience recovery. Communities at sites with faster rates of warming had fewer gains in taxon richness, functional richness and abundance. Although biodiversity gains in the 1990s and 2000s probably reflect the effectiveness of water-quality improvements and restoration projects, the decelerating trajectory in the 2010s suggests that the current measures offer diminishing returns. Given new and persistent pressures on freshwater ecosystems, including emerging pollutants, climate change and the spread of invasive species, we call for additional mitigation to revive the recovery of freshwater biodiversity.

Abstract

Objectives Asymptomatic hyperuricemia (AHU) is elevated serum uric acid (UA) without symptoms. This study aimed to determine the effects of AHU treatment with allopurinol on selected hypertension-mediated organ damage (HMOD) indices in patients with uncomplicated essential arterial hypertension (AH). Methods Patients aged 30-70 years with AHU and AH grade 1-2 with adequate blood pressure (BP) control, without previous urate-lowering therapy (ULT), were divided into two groups: (a) ULT (receiving allopurinol) and (b) control (age- and sex-matched patients without ULT). Both received a UA-lowering diet. BP (office, 24 h and central), echocardiographic parameters, carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and lab tests [high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP)] were measured at baseline and at 6 months follow-up. Results Of 100 participants, 87 (44 ULT, 43 controls) completed the study. At 6 months follow-up, there was a greater reduction in serum UA concentration in the ULT group than in the control group. Patients receiving allopurinol had significant reductions in office systolic and diastolic BP, central systolic BP, pulse pressure, IMT (0.773 ± 0.121 vs. 0.752 ± 0.13 mm, P = 0.044) and hs-CRP (3.36 ± 2.73 vs. 2.74 ± 1.91 mg/L, P = 0.028) compared to controls. Multivariate regression analysis revealed the independent relationship between reduction in IMT and UA lowering (P < 0.026). Conclusion In patients with AH and AHU, treatment with allopurinol leads to improvement in BP control and reduction in HMOD intensity, in particular IMT. The decrease in hs-CRP concentration associated with ULT may have a beneficial effect on a patient's long-term prognosis.

Abstract

In an attempt to halt and reverse biodiversity losses, the European Commission has proposed a new regulation, the Nature Restoration Law (NRL). It could become a cornerstone of Europe’s ambitions to restore biodiversity and ecosystem services for decades to come (1) and demonstrate global leadership in addressing ongoing environmental crises. The draft of the law, which is a first globally, has been under political pressure from various sides, and scientists have contributed intensively to the discussion (2). After trilogue negotiations among the European Parliament, the Council of Europe, and the European Commission, the final text of the NRL has been agreed on (see the box). However, it will still be subject to final votes within the Council and Parliament. Here, we assess the potential for the NRL to overcome problems associated with implementation of related European Union (EU) legislation, strategies, and policies and what can be learned for implementation of the NRL. The NRL acknowledges that existing EU legislation and policies have so far failed to halt biodiversity losses (1) and consequently, without new instruments, cannot meet the targets of international agreements, such as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Although some of the NRL’s aims and approaches overlap with other EU directives, strategies, and policies, in particular with the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, the NRL is distinct in terms of its coverage targeting the majority of European ecosystem types, its strong focus on restoration, and its provision of binding targets and clear timelines. This potential for regulatory power may largely explain the contested nature of its passage into legislation.

Monitoring aquatischer Artengruppen nach Wasserrahmenrichtlinie sowie Verfahrensempfehlung zur Erfolgskontrolle hydromorphologischer Maßnahmen) sind die biologischen Bewertungsansätze für Ufer und Auen bundesweit sehr heterogen. Bestehende Bewertungssysteme, wie z. B. das Monitoring der Fauna-Flora-Habitat-Richtlinie (FFH-Richtlinie), geben zwar einen Einblick; allerdings erfolgt das Monitoring ausschließlich in Schutzgebieten auf der Ebene von Lebensraumtypen und ausgewählten Arten. Im Hinblick auf die hohe Artenvielfalt in Auen steht hier eine vergleichsweise geringe Auswahl an Tier- und Pflanzenarten zur Verfügung. Somit fehlt ein bundesweiter Ansatz für die Zustandsbewertung der Lebensgemeinschaften an Ufern und in Auen sowie Möglichkeiten einer einheitlichen Erfolgskontrolle. Mit dieser Veröffentlichung wird ein einfach anwendbares, standardisiertes Verfahren vorgestellt, mit dem Akteure den Erfolg von Renaturierungsmaßnahmen für Flora und Fauna an Ufern und in Auen nachvollziehbar bewerten können. Das Verfahren berücksichtigt die Artengruppen Amphibien, Gefäßpflanzen, Land- und Wassermollusken, Laufkäfer und Vögel.

Abstract

Owing to a long history of anthropogenic pressures, freshwater ecosystems are among the most vulnerable to biodiversity loss1. Mitigation measures, including wastewater treatment and hydromorphological restoration, have aimed to improve environmental quality and foster the recovery of freshwater biodiversity2. Here, using 1,816 time series of freshwater invertebrate communities collected across 22 European countries between 1968 and 2020, we quantified temporal trends in taxonomic and functional diversity and their responses to environmental pressures and gradients. We observed overall increases in taxon richness (0.73% per year), functional richness (2.4% per year) and abundance (1.17% per year). However, these increases primarily occurred before the 2010s, and have since plateaued. Freshwater communities downstream of dams, urban areas and cropland were less likely to experience recovery. Communities at sites with faster rates of warming had fewer gains in taxon richness, functional richness and abundance. Although biodiversity gains in the 1990s and 2000s probably reflect the effectiveness of water-quality improvements and restoration projects, the decelerating trajectory in the 2010s suggests that the current measures offer diminishing returns. Given new and persistent pressures on freshwater ecosystems, including emerging pollutants, climate change and the spread of invasive species, we call for additional mitigation to revive the recovery of freshwater biodiversity.

Abstract

Riverbed incision (erosion) from anthropogenic impacts disturbs the natural lateral connectivity of the river floodplain, reducing natural flooded areas and thus leading to a loss of typical floodplain vegetation. The way in which differential lateral connectivity affects plant communities and phytodiversity is however still poorly understood. Therefore, the influence of connectivity on plant species composition was investigated in four study areas (each with 20 survey plots) along the river Elbe within the project “ElBiota - Lateral connectivity and biodiversity of the Elbe floodplains”. Two of the study areas (Elsnig and Bösewig on the upper middle Elbe) are largely disconnected from the Elbe (area with strong riverbed incision/erosion). Two other study areas (Schönberg Deich and Jasebeck) on the lower middle Elbe still show relatively good lateral connectivity of floodplain and river (area without riverbed incision/erosion). A large number of plot-specific environmentalvariables were recorded or modelled and finally multivariate statistical analyses were performed to determine which variables were best associated with plant community differentiation.

Abstract

Our capacity to predict trajectories of ecosystem degradation and recovery is limited, especially when impairments are caused by multiple stressors. Recovery may be fast or slow and either complete or partial, sometimes result in novel ecosystem states or even fail completely. Here, we introduce the Asymmetric Response Concept (ARC) that provides a basis for exploring and predicting the pace and magnitude of ecological responses to, and release from, multiple stressors. The ARC holds that three key mechanisms govern population, community and ecosystem trajectories. Stress tolerance is the main mechanism determining responses to increasing stressor intensity, whereas dispersal and biotic interactions predominantly govern responses to the release from stressors. The shifting importance of these mechanisms creates asymmetries between the ecological trajectories that follow increasing and decreasing stressor intensities. This recognition helps to understand multiple stressor impacts and to predict which measures will restore communities that are resistant to restoration.

Abstract

Robust demonstration case-studies are needed to evaluate whether improvements in ecosystem condition are translated into improvements in ecosystem services. This research is essential for effectively scaling-up nature-based solutions across Europe and providing the evidence to support transformation agendas in society and industries, and ultimately supporting the ambitions of the European Green Deal. Clear guidance and standardised indicators help monitor the impact of freshwater and wetland restoration measures on European Green Deal goals. These monitoring indicators should include environmental indicators (e.g. for biodiversity, greenhouse gas emissions and water storage capacity) as well as socio-economic indicators such as stakeholder representation, private finance mobilisation and job creation. A combined Before-After-Control-Intervention (BACI) monitoring design is recommended to provide robust evidence and attribute change to the restoration measures. Benchmark (cost or effort) and local/regional context data (e.g. land use, governance) are also needed alongside monitoring of impacts to not just measure what has happened at a site but to understand why it has happened.

Abstract

The guidelines on hypertension recently published by the European Societies of Hypertension and Cardiology, have acknowledged cognitive function (and its decline) as a hypertension-mediated organ damage. In fact, brain damage can be the only hypertension-mediated organ damage in more than 30% of hypertensive patients, evolving undetected for several years if not appropriately screened; as long as undetected it cannot provide either corrective measures, nor adequate risk stratification of the hypertensive patient. The medical community dealing with older hypertensive patients should have a simple and pragmatic approach to early identify and precisely treat these patients. Both hypertension and cognitive decline are undeniably growing pandemics in developed or epidemiologically transitioning societies. Furthermore, there is a clear-cut connection between exposure to the increased blood pressure and development of cognitive decline. Therefore, a group of experts in the field from the European Society of Hypertension and from the European Geriatric Medicine Society gathered together to answer practical clinical questions that often face the physician when dealing with their hypertensive patients in a routine clinical practice. Abstract

Global freshwater biodiversity is declining dramatically, and meeting the challenges of this crisis requires bold goals and the mobilisation of substantial resources. While the reasons are varied, investments in both research and conservation of freshwater biodiversity lag far behind those in the terrestrial and marine realms. Inspired by a global consultation, we identify 15 pressing priority needs, grouped into five research areas, in an effort to support informed stewardship of freshwater biodiversity. The proposed agenda aims to advance freshwater biodiversity research globally as a critical step in improving coordinated actions towards its sustainable management and conservation.

Abstract

Am 4. März 2021 fand als Abschlussveranstaltung des vom Bundesamt für Naturschutzgeförderten Forschungs- und Entwicklungsvorhabens „Biozönotische Auenzustandsbewertung“ (BioAu)an der Universität Duisburg-Essen ein Online-Workshop statt. Ziel des auf dem Workshop vorgestellten Forschungs- und Entwicklungsvorhabens „Biozönotische Auenzustandsbewertung“ ist die Bereitstellung eines praxistauglichenVerfahrens zur biozönotischen Auenzustandsbewertung und Erfolgskontrolle von Renaturierungsmaßnahmen in Ufer- und Auenbereichen von Flüssen (Januschke et al. in Vorbereitung, Abbildung 1). Die Bewertung soll leitbildgestützt auf Grundlage von Auenschlüsselhabitaten und Indikatorarten erfolgen, die für bundesweit 18 verschiedene Auenabschnittstypen erarbeitet wurden. Die Bewertung kann zukünftig für fünf Artengruppen (Amphibien, Gefäßpflanzen, Land- und Wassermollusken, Laufkäfer und Vögel) durchgeführt werden.

Abstract

Vor dem Hintergrund zahlreicher Renaturierungsmaßnahmen an Fließgewässern und deren Auen (Abbildung 1) steigt der Bedarf an standardisierten Erfolgskontrollen, um die „biologische Wirksamkeit“ von Renaturierungen im Hinblick auf unterschiedliche Zielvorstellungen, nicht nur anhand aquatischer Organismen allein, zu messen. Ein biologisches Verfahren, mit dem Akteure den Erfolg von Renaturierungsmaßnahmen für die Bereiche Ufer und Auen umfassend bewerten können, fehlt bislang. Im Rahmen eines vom Bundesamt für Naturschutz geförderten Forschungs- und Entwicklungsvorhabens hat die Projektgruppe daher Leitbilder zur Habitat- und Artenausstattung für die bundesweit beschriebenen Abschnittstypen der Fluss- und Stromauen und ein Bewertungsverfahren erstellt. Mit Hilfe des Verfahrens soll zukünftig eine biologische Erfolgskontrolle von Renaturierungsmaßnahmen auf mehreren Bewertungsebenen standardisiert erfolgen können. Es berücksichtigt die Artengruppen Amphibien, Gefäßpflanzen, Land- und Wassermollusken, Laufkäfer und Vögel.
