Abstract Objective Exhaled nitric oxide (eNO) has been suggested as a marker of airway inflammatory diseases. The level of eNO is influenced by many various factor including age, sex, menstrual cycle, exercise, food, drugs, etc. The aim of our study was to investigate a potential influence of circadian variation on eNO level in healthy subjects. Methods Measurements were performed in 44 women and 10 men, non-smokers, without respiratory tract infection in last 2 weeks. The eNO was detected at 4-hour intervals from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. using an NIOX analyzer. We followed the ATS/ERS guidelines for eNO measurement and analysis. Results Peak of eNO levels were observed at 10 a.m. (11.1 ± 7.2 ppb), the lowest value was detected at 10 p.m. (10.0 ± 5.8 ppb). The difference was statistically significant (paired t-test, P < 0.001). Conclusions The daily variations in eNO, with the peak in the morning hours, could be of importance in clinical practice regarding the choice of optimal time for monitoring eNO in patients with respiratory disease.

Purpose: Antivascular endothelial growth factor agents are increasingly used in diabetic macular oedema (DME); however, there are few studies exploring their use in DME in real-world settings. Methods: POLARIS was a noninterventional, multicentre study to monitor 12-month outcomes in patients starting ranibizumab treatment in routine practices. The primary outcome was mean change in visual acuity (VA) from baseline to month 12 (last observation carried forward approach). Other outcomes included mean change in central retinal thickness (CRT) and resource utilization. Visual acuity (VA) outcomes were also stratified by country, baseline visual acuity score (VAS), sex, age and injection frequency. Results: Outcomes were analysed from all treated patients (n=804) and from first-year completers (patients who had a visual acuity assessment at 12months; n=568). The mean (SD) baseline VAS was 59.4 (15.9) letters, and the mean change in visual acuity was 4.4 letters (95% confidence interval: 3.3–5.4) at month 12 (study eye; first-year completers). The mean number of injections (study eye) was 4.9, and the mean number of all visits (any eye) was 10 (58% were injection visits) over 12months (first-year completers). The mean (SD) baseline CRT was 410.6 (128.8) μm, and the mean change in CRT was −115.2μm at month 12 (study eye; first-year completers). Visual acuity (VA) outcomes were generally comparable across most countries and subgroups and were greatest in patients with the lowest baseline VAS (≤60 letters). Conclusion: POLARIS showed that real-world outcomes in DME patients starting treatment with ranibizumab were lower than those observed in clinical studies, in spite of extensive monitoring.

6. Ferrocene-Based N-Heterocyclic Plumbylenes [Fe{(η 5 -C 5 H 4 )NSiMe 2 R} 2 Pb:]: Influence of the Steric Demand of the N-Substituents on Their Dimerization via C-H Activation with Pb II .

- Abstract
Ferrocene-based N-heterocyclic plumbylenes fc[(NSiMe
2 R)2 Pb:] (1; fc=1,1'-ferrocenylene) are easily accessible by transamination from [(Me3 Si)2 N]2 Pb and the corresponding 1,1'-diaminoferrocene derivatives fc(NHSiMe2 R)2 . They may form unconventional dimers 2 by a process, which causes the cleavage of a cyclopentadienyl C-H bond and the formation of a Pb-C and an N-H bond. The monomer-dimer equilibrium (2 1⇆2) has been addressed experimentally and computationally. It critically depends on the steric demand of the N-substituents SiMe2 R, which has been varied systematically by using homologues with aliphatic (R=methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, tert-butyl) and aromatic units (R=phenyl, mesityl, ferrocenyl). Even in the sterically least congested case (R=methyl), dimerization is only slightly exergonic. It eventually becomes prohibitively endergonic with increasingly larger substituents and is thus not observed for R=tert-butyl, mesityl, and ferrocenyl. R=phenyl represents a borderline case, where the dimer is still detectable in the equilibrium mixture, albeit as a very minor component, in accord with the slightly endergonic Gibbs free energy change calculated for its formation. Addition of 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) to the monomer-dimer equilibrium mixtures cleanly affords the corresponding adducts [1(DMAP)], irrespective of the equilibrium composition., (© 2023 The Authors. - Abstract
Reflectivity modulation is a critical feature for applications in telecommunications, 3D imaging and printing, advanced laser machining, or portable displays. Tunable metasurfaces have recently emerged as a promising implementation for miniaturized and high-performance tunable optical components. Commonly, metasurface response tuning is achieved by electro-optical effects. In this work, we demonstrate reflectivity modulation based on a nanostructured, mechanically tunable, metasurface, consisting of an amorphous silicon nanopillar array and a suspended amorphous silicon membrane with integrated electrostatic actuators. With a membrane displacement of only 150 nm, we demonstrate reflectivity modulation by Mie resonance enhanced absorption in the pillar array, leading to a reflectivity contrast ratio of 1:3 over the spectral range from 400-530 nm. With fast, low-power electrostatic actuation and a broadband response in the visible spectrum, this mechanically tunable metasurface reflectivity modulator could enable high frame rate dynamic reflective displays., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2023 The Authors.
