Abstract

In this report, we overcome a major drawback of the level set framework: the lack of point correspondences. We maintain explicit backward correspondences from the evolving interface to the initial one by advecting the initial point coordinates with the same velocity as the level set function. Our method leads to a system of coupled Eulerian partial differential equations. We show in a variety of numerical experiments that it can handle both normal and tangential velocities, large deformations, shocks, rarefactions and topological changes. Applications are many since our method can upgrade virtually any level set evolution. We complement our work with the design of non zero tangential velocities that preserve the relative area of interface patches; this feature may be crucial in such applications as computational geometry, grid generation or unfolding of the organs' surfaces, e.g. brain, in medical imaging. This report also tackles a diffeomorphic approach to level set evolution, a family of volume-preserving smoothing flows, and some numerical aspects of the intrinsic heat flow on implicit surfaces.

Abstract

Multi-Modal Statistical Image-Matching techniques look for a deformation field that minimizes some error criterion between two images. This is achieved by computing a solution of the parabolic system obtained from the Euler-Lagrange equations of the error criterion. We prove the existence and uniqueness of a \em classical solution of this parabolic system in eight cases corresponding to the following alternatives. We consider that the images are realizations of spatial random processes that are either stationary or nonstationary. In each case we measure the similarity between the two images either by their mutual information or by their correlation ratio. In each case we regularize the deformation field either by borrowing from the field of Linear elasticity or by using the Nagel-Enkelmann tensor. Our proof uses the Hille-Yosida theorem and the theory of analytical semi-grou- ps. We then briefly describe our numerical scheme and show some experimental results.

Abstract

We approach the problem of unfolding the surface of the cerebral cortex by modeling the problem as a front propagation governed by a Partial Different- ial Equation (PDE) which is solved using level set techniques. As a first step in this direction, we present multi-scale representations of closed surfaces that preserve their total area or enclosed volume. This is the three-dimensional extension of previous work on curves [21]. The resulting evolution equations allow the smoothing of closed surfaces without shrinkage. Additionally, correspondences between points in the surface at different scales are maintained by tracking the points of an initial mesh by means of an Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE). This technique allows to give tangential velocities to those points, therefore permitting them to move under general (tangential plus normal) velocity fields. We present the level set implementation of the normalized three-dimensional mean curvature flows and provide experimental results by unfolding surfaces segmented from MRI images of the human brain.

Abstract

Image registration methods may be designed as solutions of minimization problems on a set of geometric deformations. In the nonrigid case, solving these problems often means computing the steady state of a system of evolution equations involving the "gradient" of the error criterion, defined from the Euler-Lagrange equations of the corresponding minimization problem. The well-posedness of the registration method requires showing the existence of a solution to the minimization problem, as well as that of a stable solution of the evolution equations derived from it. We provide such proofs in the case where the error criterion is derived from two different statistical similarity measures: global mutual information and local cross-covariance. We also describe our numerical implementation for solving the corresponding evolution equations and show examples of registrations of real 2D and 3D images achieved with these algorithms.
