Abstract

En la actualidad, las nanopartículas son de gran interés científico por su amplia variedad de aplicaciones en diferentes campos. Debido a los grandes avances, las nuevas necesidades y el gran número de nanomateriales utilizados en sectores industriales los estudios para su obtención mediante química verde son de vital importancia. En este estudio se obtuvieron nanopartículas de ZnO mediante el aprovechamiento de diversos subproductos vegetales, algunos con diferentes bioprocesos. A las nanopartículas obtenidas, se les determinó actividad antimicrobiana contra algunos microorganismos de importancia en alimentos y salud pública. Se les midió también el tamaño de partícula mediante DLS (Dynamic light scattering) con un zetasizer y se caracterizó su morfología mediante microscopio electrónico de barrido (SEM). Los tamaños de partícula variaron entre 563 y 1314 nm dependiendo del tipo de subroducto utilizado y bioproceso aplicado. El índice de polidispersidad obtenido varió de 0.287-0.560 siendo las NPs obtenidas de subproductos de sandía y tuna con bioproceso las que presentaron homogeneidad. La actividad antimicrobiana se presentó en rangos de 0.9- 1.3 mm de inhibición en la mayoría de las nanopartículas, presentando mayor actividad en Escherichia coli, Candida spp y Staphylococcus aureus, mientras que Listeria spp y Salmonella typhi presentaron mayor resistencia en algunos casos.

Abstract

The funders had no role in study design, data collection and analysis, decision to publish, or preparation of the manuscript., Background: Few cities in the world biomonitor changes in human levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) through periodic health surveys representative of the general population. Objectives: To analyze changes in serum concentrations of POPs in Barcelona from 2006 to 2016, and to analyze socio-demographic correlates of concentrations of 62 POPs in 2016. Methods: Participants in the Barcelona Health Surveys of 2006 and 2016 (N = 231 and 240, respectively) were interviewed face-to-face, gave blood, and underwent a physical exam. POPs were analyzed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Results: Concentrations of all nine most prevalent compounds decreased markedly during the 10-years . Reductions occurred in almost all sex, age and BMI subgroups. For most organochlorine compounds the reduction was larger in women than men (for HCB, & minus;77% and & minus; 62%, respectively). For beta-HCH, PCBs, naphthalene and phenanthrene the decrease was larger in the younger groups. Large reductions in concentrations of PCBs and DDE were observed in individuals with normal weight but not in individuals with obesity. Conclusions: While concentrations of most POPs are decreasing in Barcelona, significant sociodemographic differences in such reductions warrant strengthening public and private policies towards groups making slower progress. Abstract

Aim: Intestinal dysfunction in cirrhosis patients is linked to death by bacterial infections. Currently, there is no effective therapy for this complication. This study aims to evaluate butyrate, a novel postbiotic, on the intestinal inflammatory response, tight junction proteins and the microbiota in the cholestasis model. Methods and Results: Wistar rats underwent 15 days of bile duct ligation (BDL). We administered butyrate at a concentration of 1%. The BDL group did not receive treatment. The results showed that butyrate could significantly reduce pro‐inflammatory cytokines (IL‐17A, IFN‐γ, TNF‐α) in the ileum and colon while promoting IL‐10 expression in the colon. Moreover, it significantly promotes tight junction protein (cld‐1, occludin and ZO‐1) expression in the ileum. A similar effect was observed in the colon except for ZO‐1. Additionally, butyrate limited taxa diversity loss and promoted probiotic genera expansion such as Lachnospira, Prevotella and Lactobacillus. The increase in Turicibacter and Clostridiaceae distinguished the BDL group. Conclusions: Butyrate is effective in regulating the inflammatory response, tight junction proteins and limits bacterial diversity loss. Significance and Impact of the Study: This research reveals that butyrate could represent an interesting postbiotic metabolomic intervention for intestinal epithelium dysfunction in liver disease. Abstract

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are well-known ubiquitous environmental chemicals which have been related to adverse health outcomes, including cardiovascular disease (CVD). The purpose of this study was to evaluate POPs burden, and its determinants, in a population at high risk of suffering CVD enrolled in the PREDIMED Study (Spanish acronym for PREvention by means of MEDiterranean Diet). This cohort was formed by 343 participants (55–80 y.o.), which were selected for a preventive nutritional intervention for CVD based on the Mediterranean Diet. Relevant information on demographic, behavioral, dietary, and socioeconomic characteristics was obtained from each participant through a specific questionnaire, and their anthropometric and clinical measurements were recorded. In addition, the levels of 35 POPs were determined in serum samples taken before the beginning of the nutritional intervention. All the samples showed detectable levels of, at least, one POP, being DDT-derivatives and marker-PCBs the most frequently detected compounds. Our results showed that people at high risk for CVD showed a higher level of contamination by POPs as compared to other studies done in cohorts of Western people at no special risk of CVD. Although educational level seems to be a relevant determinant for POPs burden in our population, the main determining factor seems to be the diet. Thus, while the intake of food of animal origin was significantly associated with levels of PCBs, especially in men, the intake of vegetal-origin food was positively related to levels of organochlorine pesticides, indicating a different dietary source for these two groups of chemicals.
