Los extractos de algas marinas poseen sustancias bioestimulantes como polisacáridos, fitohormonas y micronutrientes capaces de estimular el crecimiento vegetal y ofrecer una mayor protección frente a diferentes tipos de estrés abiótico y biótico. Los extractos de algas tienen efectos sobre la microbiota del suelo ya que modifican ciertas propiedades de este como la actividad enzimática, aireación y retención de agua, favoreciendo la proliferación de microorganismos como hongos micorrícicos o bacterias fijadoras de nitrógeno. A nivel celular, se han identificado diferentes genes de respuesta al estrés abiótico y biótico, así como genes propios del crecimiento y elongación celular cuya expresión se ve modulada por la aplicación de extractos de algas. La comercialización de dichos extractos, los métodos de extracción y la caracterización de los compuestos bioestimulantes continúa en pleno desarrollo y su estudio será crucial para la futura aplicación en la agricultura. Por otra parte, es necesario evaluar el impacto ecológico que la extracción a gran escala de estas algas puede conllevar y si pudiera convertirse en una fuente renovable que sustituya o reduzca la utilización de fertilizantes y pesticidas químicos en un futuro. Seaweed extracts contain biostimulant substances such as polysaccharides, phytohormones and micronutrients capable of stimulating plant growth and offering greater protection against different types of abiotic and biotic stress. Seaweed extracts have effects on the soil microbiota by modifying certain soil properties such as enzymatic activity, aeration and water retention, favouring the proliferation of micro-organisms such as mycorrhizal fungi or nitrogen-fixing bacteria. At the cellular level, different abiotic and biotic stress response genes have been identified, as well as genes specific to cell growth and elongation whose expression is modulated by the application of seaweed extracts. The commercialisation of these extracts, extraction methods and characterisation of biostimulant compounds is still under development and their study will be crucial for future application in agriculture. Moreover, it is necessary to assess the ecological impact that large-scale extraction of these algae may have and whether it could become a renewable source to replace or reduce the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides in the future.
