1. LLMs left, right, and center: Assessing GPT's capabilities to label political bias from web domains

Abstract

This research investigates whether OpenAI's GPT-4, a state-of-the-art large language model, can accurately classify the political bias of news sources based solely on their URLs. Given the subjective nature of political labels, third-party bias ratings like those from Ad Fontes Media, AllSides, and Media Bias/Fact Check (MBFC) are often used in research to analyze news source diversity. This study aims to determine if GPT-4 can replicate these human ratings on a seven-degree scale ("far-left" to "far-right"). The analysis compares GPT-4's classifications against MBFC's, and controls for website popularity using Open PageRank scores. Findings reveal a high correlation ($\text{Spearman's } \rho = .89$, $n = 5,877$, $p < 0.001$) between GPT-4's and MBFC's ratings, indicating the model's potential reliability. However, GPT-4 abstained from classifying approximately $\frac{2}{3}$ of the dataset, particularly less popular and less biased sources. The study also identifies a slight leftward skew in GPT-4's classifications compared to MBFC's. The analysis suggests that while GPT-4 can be a scalable, cost-effective tool for political bias classification of news websites, but its use should complement human judgment to mitigate biases. Abstract

In this work we study the \emph{Saito number} of a plane curve and we present a method to determine the minimal Saito number for plane curves in a given equisingularity class, that gives rise to an actual algorithm. In particular situations, we also provide various formulas for this number. In addition, if $\nu_0$ and $\nu_1$ are two coprime positive integers and $N>0$ then we show that for any $1\leq k\leq \left [\frac{N\nu_0}{2}\right ]$ there exits a plane curve equisingular to the curve $$y^{N\nu_0}-x^{N\nu_1}=0$$ such that its Saito number is precisely $k$.

4. QDsim: A user-friendly toolbox for simulating large-scale quantum dot devices

Abstract

We introduce QDsim, a python package tailored for the rapid generation of charge stability diagrams in large-scale quantum dot devices, extending beyond traditional double or triple dots. QDsim is founded on the constant interaction model from which we rephrase the task of finding the lowest energy charge configuration as a convex optimization problem. Therefore, we can leverage the existing package CVXPY, in combination with an appropriate powerful solver, for the convex optimization which streamlines the creation of stability diagrams and polytopes. Through multiple examples, we demonstrate how QDsim enables the generation of large-scale dataset that can serve a basis for the training of machine-learning models for automated tuning algorithms. While the package currently does not support quantum effects beyond the constant interaction model, QDsim is a tool that directly addresses the critical need for cost-effective and expeditious data acquisition for better tuning algorithms in order to accelerate the development of semiconductor quantum devices., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, code: https://gitlab.com/QMAI/papers/qdsim

In this work we describe dicritical foliations in $(\mathbb{C}^2,0)$ at a triple point of the resolution dual graph of an analytic plane branch $\mathcal{C}$ using its semiroots. In particular, we obtain a constructive method to present a one-parameter family $\mathcal{C}_{u}$ of separatrices for such foliations. 14. Identification of Enterococcus spp. by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry isolated from clinical mastitis and bulk tank milk samples

Abstract

Abstract Background Throughout a three-year study period, 1,577 bovine clinical mastitis samples and 302 bulk tank samples were analyzed from ten Brazilian dairy herds. Enterococcus spp. was isolated and identified in 93 (5.9%) clinical mastitis samples. In addition, 258 Enterococcus spp. were isolated from the bulk tank samples of the same herds. The identification of Enterococcus spp. isolated from bulk tanks and milk samples of clinical mastitis were accomplished by phenotypic characteristics and confirmed by MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry (MS). Fisher test was performed to verify the difference between bulk tanks and mastitis samples. Results The following species were identified from clinical mastitis: E. saccharolyticus (62.4%), E. faecalis (19.4%), E. faecium (15.1%), E. hirae (1.1%), E. mundtii (1.1%), E. durans (1.1%). Furthermore, from 258 bulk tank milk samples, eight enterococci species were isolated: E. faecalis (67.8%), E. hirae (15.1%), E. faecium (4.6%), E. saccharolyticus (4.6%), E. mundtii (3.1%), E. caseliflavus ( 2.7%), E. durans (1.2%), E. galinarum (0.8%). Conclusions The difference in species predominance in bulk tank samples (67.8% of E. faecalis) and clinical mastitis (62.4% of E. saccharolyticus) was unexpected and caught our attention. Although Enterococcus spp. are traditionally classified as an environmental mastitis agent, in the present study, E. saccharolyticus behaved as a contagious agent of mastitis, which consequently changed the control patterns to be implemented.

Abstract

A pupunha (Bactris gasipaes) tem se mostrado uma excelente opção econômica para os produtores rurais, pois sua produção de palmito permite precocidade de corte, rusticidade, perfilhamento abundante, boa palatabilidade, ausência de oxidação do palmito, alta produtividade e facilidade nos tratos culturais. Objetivou-se selecionar, entre os atributos do solo pesquisado, aquele com a melhor correlação, linear e espacial, para explicar a variabilidade da planta da pupunha. O experimento foi conduzido na fazenda de pesquisa e extensão da Faculdade de Engenharia de Registro (SP), foi avaliada a variabilidade espacial dos componentes vegetativos da pupunha e dos atributos químicos de um Cambissolo Eutrófico. Uma malha contendo 54 pontos foi georreferenciada de forma a representar toda a área de amostragem de aproximadamente 1 ha. Os atributos químicos apresentaram variabilidade de muito alta a baixa e os atributos de planta apresentaram variabilidade de média a muito alta. Os valores médios de MO, P, Ca e Mg encontrados estiveram próximos ao adequado para o desenvolvimento da pupunha, sendo explicado por um modelo exponencial e esférico altamente significativo em função do potássio e da CTC. .

Neste sentido este trabalho teve como objetivos caracterizar a fisiografia e alguns atributos fsicos dos principais solos de uma microbacia na cidade de Ilha Solteira, So Paulo. Foram utilizadas imagens de satlite de alta resoluo 0,6 m Quickbird e o programa SPRING verso 4.3. Utilizando a metodologia de topossequncia em relao vertente, em cinco transectos com pontos locados no sentido do espigo at a foz, foram realizadas coletas de amostras de solo para anlise granulomtrica, macroporosidade, microporosidade, porosidade total. Realizou-se a estatstica descritiva. Os solos representativos da microbacia estudada foram: Latossolo Vermelho distrfico e Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo eutrfico. O Latossolo apresentou-se com condies fsicas mais degradadas tomando-se como indicador de qualidade a densidade do solo; j no Argissolo as mesmas foram melhores; a variabilidade dos atributos fsicos estudados foram maiores no Latossolo Vermelho comparado ao Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo.

Abstract

O Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moech é uma importante forrageira de alta produção, que cresce no cenário brasileiro ainda de forma lenta em substituição ao cultivo de milho safrinha. A cultura do sorgo seria alternativa no período da seca na produção de silagem para o período das águas; contudo, o crescimento e desenvolvimento das plantas pode ser influenciado por alterações nos atributos do solo, como textura, porosidade e estrutura do solo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar e caracterizar a dependência e variabilidade espacial entre atributos do solo e a cultura do sorgo forrageiro, em um Planossolo Hidromórfico no ecótono Cerrado-Pantanal. Para tanto, estimaram-se a produtividade de matérias verde e seca de forragem (MVF e MSF) de sorgo forrageiro e os atributos do solo, como macroporosidade (Ma), microporosidade (Mi), porosidade total (Pt), diâmetro médio geométrico, diâmetro médio ponderado, índice de estabilidade de agregados (IEA) e teor de carbono orgânico total do solo (COT), em duas profundidades: 1 (0,00-0,10 m) e 2 (0,10-0,20 m). Em relação à malha geoestatística, foram realizadas 50 coletas de atributos de planta e solo em 40 ha. Isso possibilitou detectar a elevada variabilidade espacial dos atributos de planta (MVF e MSF) e também os atributos do solo que mais variaram espacialmente. Com relação às variáveis que apresentaram dependência espacial, o coeficiente de determinação (r2) decresceu na seguinte ordem: IEA1, silte2, Ma1, Pt1, areia2, silte1, MSF, argila1, MVF e IEA2. Com isso, verificou-se que IEA1 apresentou o melhor ajuste semivariográfico (r2 = 0,926), com alcance de 677,0 m, e o avaliador da dependência espacial (50,6 %) moderado. O silte1, porém, evidenciou o menor alcance (111,0 m) e, assim, recomenda-se que em estudos posteriores o alcance mínimo a ser adotado, para esse tipo de avaliação, não deve ser inferior a esse valor em Planossolo Hidromórfico sob preparo convencional. A correlação linear foi significativa e elevada para MVF e MSF, ao passo que entre atributos de planta versus solo houve correlações positiva e negativa. No âmbito da cokrigagem, a argila1 foi o melhor indicador para estimar a variabilidade espacial da produtividade de massa seca de forragem de sorgo de correlação significativa e negativa (r = -0,292*).

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To identify under what circumstances a university student should be allowed academic accommodation for ADHD. To frame an evidence-based policy for use in Brazil based on a worldwide experience. METHODS: We reviewed the literature to acquire information on what documents are commonly required by disability services before accommodation for ADHD is made (including malingering detection). We scrutinized the eligibility criteria of the best universities worldwide. Renowned experts in the field and national stakeholders were consulted. RESULTS: We found no international standard for the assessment of students with ADHD who request academic accommodation. Even renowned institutions worldwide differ from one another in their approaches to academic accommodation on the grounds of ADHD. We propose a national unified set of criteria for Brazilian universities, which could generalize internationally. DISCUSSION: Rigorous assessment is paramount for aiding students with disabilities while preventing ineligible students gaining an unfair advantage. Higher education institutions nationwide and beyond may benefit from adopting a unified set of criteria for eligibility to ADHD accommodation programs.

45. On the energetic analysis of autonomous quantum systems

Abstract

In this thesis, we focus on the energetic analysis within autonomous quantum systems. To this aim, we propose a novel and general formalism for a dynamic description of the energy exchanges between interacting subsystems. From the Schmidt decomposition approach, we identify effective Hamiltonians as the representative operators for characterizing the local internal energies, whose expectation values satisfy the usual thermodynamic notion of energy additivity. In contrast to the currently used methodologies, such procedure treats the subsystems with equal footing and do not rely on any sort of approximations and additional hypotheses, e.g., semi-classical description, weak-coupling regime, strict energy conservation and Markovian dynamics. In short, our proposal contributes to the development of QT by providing a new formalism that does not suffer from the usual restrictive shortcomings and establishes a new and exact route for defining other general thermodynamic quantities to the quantum regime., Comment: PhD thesis presented to the S\~ao Carlos Institute of Physics of the University of S\~ao Paulo (IFSC - USP, Brazil) in May 2022; 135 pages

Abstract

ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others.

Abstract

Abstract Population growth combined with the need for electrical energy resulted in the construction of hundreds of hydroelectric plants in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The consequence of these interventions was the fragmentation of rivers, forming barriers, that hinder the mobility of migratory fish species, generating an impact on the life cycle of these species, especially about movement between breeding and feeding areas. For this reason, this article aimed to evaluate the state-of-the-art knowledge regarding dams, free stretches, and migratory species in the three main river basins of the state of São Paulo and its tributaries. Through a systematic review from 2003 to 2023, 89 articles were obtained, 48 of which were about dams, 5 which addressed fish transposition systems, and 36 portraying migratory species. In the first half, research focused more on the impacts of dams on fish fauna, while in the second half of the period studied, studies of migratory fish were dominant. Most research was conducted in the main rivers, with few in the tributaries. Finally, 16 migratory species, considered long-distance, were studied, the most studied being P. lineatus, P. maculatus, L. friderici, M. obtusidens and S. hilarri and the ones that occurred most frequently in rivers are Prochilodus lineatus, Pimelodus maculatus, Megaleporinus obtusidens and Salminus hilarii. Therefore, we recommend maintaining the natural flow regime that still exists in the main rivers and tributaries of the state of São Paulo, to maintain healthy populations of the inventoried species.

Abstract

INTRODUÇÃO: A morte súbita caracteriza-se por uma parada cardiorrespiratória repentina que leva o praticante a óbito, em geral, quando alcança níveis altos de esforço físico. Em atletas de todas as idades, inclusive no futebol, nota-se um aumento do número de casos, mesmo diante de um investimento médico-tecnológico em estratégias preventivas. Este ensaio não desconsidera as implicações biológicas da morte súbita, mas visa investigá-la pela ótica das Ciências Humanas e Sociais, mais precisamente pelas perspectivas teórico-metodológicas de Michel Foucault e Nikolas Rose. Assim, objetivou-se analisar como especificamente a morte súbita do jogador de futebol Christian Eriksen pode revelar questões sobre as diferentes racionalidades de saúde e risco presentes nas práticas corporais e esportivas. DESENVOLVIMENTO: O encaminhamento teórico fundamentou-se nas teorizações (pós-) foucaultianas sobre controle e gestão dos corpos para pensar o viver e o morrer, principalmente nas interconexões entre espetáculo e biopolítica e no controle exercido por dispositivos artificiais e tecnológicos. Esta perspectiva teórica sobre morte súbita pela via biopolítica assume importância significativa para a Educação Física, pois entende-se que a regulação dos corpos em movimento não pode se resumir a lógica da racionalidade biomédica, incorporando outras sensibilidades discursivas sobre práticas de exercícios e saúde. CONCLUSÃO: Em suma, captou-se como as noções de vida-morte e os mecanismos médico-tecnológicos são regulados e gerenciados em prol de um sujeito de performance que, a todo instante, se torna autocontrolado sob verdades que modulam o biológico no contexto das práticas corporais e esportivas. Abstract

Objective: to identify factors associated to sedentary behavior and physical inactivity in individuals with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) non-infected by SARS-CoV-2 during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to identify possible favorable conditions during social isolation in individuals who performed pulmonary rehabilitation in the pre-pandemic period. Method: time/day in sedentary activities and moderate/vigorous physical activities (SA and MVPA, respectively), history of previous rehabilitation, laboural activity, symptoms, insecurity and quality of life (Medical Outcomes Study 36-item Short-Form Health Survey [SF-36]) were assessed during strict social isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 50. Functional literacy and the assessment process as a diagnostic instrument for temporomandibular disorders: observational study

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Health literacy is a topic that has been gaining traction in recent years, both on the policy and research agendas of many countries, however there is no evidence about temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and this topic. The objective was to evaluate the association between the level of functional literacy and the understanding of the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) through self-report and to associate the time of TMD complaint with the levels of functional literacy. METHODS: This is an observational, cross-sectional study, comprising 56 patients from the Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) clinic at São Leopoldo Mandic College. The DC/TMD questionnaire – axis I, a sociodemographic questionnaire, and tests of the Indicador de Alfabetismo Funcional (Functional Literacy Indicator - INAF) were applied. RESULTS: The outcomes showed that 85.7% of the sample were females and 14.3% males, mainly white (60.7%), with a schooling degree, predominantly from the 3rd grade of high school and professionally active. It was found that 22.5% of the sample were functionally illiterate and 77.5% were functionally literate, 30.6% of whom had elementary level schooling. There was a significant association between the schooling level and combined INAF (p=0.005), as well as between combined INAF and duration of complaint in intervals for jaw pain (p=0.037) when Chi-square tests were used. There is evidence to establish that the mean duration of headache complaints (in months) between literacy groups are different (p=0.001) when using the Student´s t-test. With these results, it is possible to suggest that lower levels of functional literacy are related to a poorly detailed perception of TMD complaints regarding the duration of the complaint and, mainly, to the association of headache with a complaint of TMD. CONCLUSION: Lower levels of functional literacy are related to a poorly detailed perception of TMD complaints regarding the duration of the complaint and, mainly, to the association of headache with a complaint of temporomandibular disorders.
