The study was carried out among dairy farmers of Balamau block of Hardoi district of Uttar Pradesh to assess the socio-economic landscape and dairy farming practices. Utilizing a multistage purposive cum random sampling approach, data from 60 dairy farmers were collected and analyzed. Findings revealed diverse socio-economic backgrounds and educational levels among farmers, influencing their farming decisions. Buffalo predominated the livestock, with significant variations in milk production of cross breeds. Reproductive parameters underscored opportunities for improvement. Correlation and regression analyses elucidated education, training participation, social participation and scientific orientation as pivotal predictors of knowledge level in dairy management. Higher education and greater participation in training sessions were associated with better management practices. The study emphasizes the significance of education, continuous learning and scientific orientation in optimizing dairy farming practices and enhancing industry profitability offering valuable insights for stakeholders in the field. Regression analysis explained 62.10% of knowledge variation, emphasizing education, family type, training, social participation, and scientific orientation.

Defects in nanostructures play a pivotal role in determining their properties and performance in the desired applications. Herein, the defect states and structural properties of the bi-metal oxide composite of ZnO and α-Fe2O3 (ZF-W) are varied by annealing the composite at different temperatures. The changes in defects, structures, and phase are evaluated thoroughly using transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, and Mössbauer spectroscopy techniques. The defect-rich ZF-W composite is found to be composed of defect-deficient ZnFe2O4 attaining the equilibrium state when as-synthesized ZF-W is annealed at 500 °C [ZF-W(500)]. Further annealing at 1000 °C, ZF-W(1000), a non-stoichiometric and highly defected ZnFe2O4 is evidenced in the composite. The changes in the composite with the annealing temperature are correlated with the cationic migration and evolution of defect states. Moreover, the transition associated with the vacancy defects, which trapped the excited electron and dispel the free electrons, thereby inhibiting fast electron–hole pair recombination, is corroborated from the photoluminescence spectra. When implemented for methyl blue adsorption/degradation without the assistance of any external sources, the degradation efficiency of ZF-W, ZF-W(300), ZF-W(500), and ZF-W(1000) is found to be 86%, 84%, 68%, and 82%, respectively. The prepared samples are highly stable and can be used repeatedly without losing effectiveness. The simultaneous evolution of defects and structural properties of the composite are attributed for the variation in methyl blue adsorption/degradation. The present study reveals the importance of defects present in the mixed metal oxide composite in obtaining high-performance dye degradation/adsorption properties for sustainable wastewater treatment. Information on the role of boron (B) on soil physico-chemical and biological entities is scarce, and the precise mechanism in soil is still obscure. Present field investigation aimed to assessing the implication of direct and residual effect of graded levels of applied-B on soil biological entities and its concomitant impact on crop productivity. The treatments comprised of five graded levels of B with four replications. To assess the direct effect of B-fertilization, cauliflower was grown as a test crop wherein, B-fertilization was done every year. For assessment of succeeding residual effects of B-fertilization, cowpea and okra were grown as test crops and, B-fertilization was phased out in both crops. The 100% recommended dose of NPK (RDF) along with FYM was uniformly applied to all crops under CCOCS. Results indicated that the direct effect of B had the edge over residual effect of B in affecting soil physico-chemical and biological entities under CCOCS. Amongst the graded levels of B, application of the highest B level (2 kg ha–1) was most prominent in augmenting microbiological pools in soil at different crop growth stages. The order of B treatments in respect of MBC, MBN, and soil respiration at different crop growth stages was 2.0 kg B ha–1 > 1.5 kg B ha–1 > 1.0 kg B ha–1 > 0.5 kg B ha–1 > 0 kg B ha–1, respectively. Moreover, maximum recoveries of potentially mineralizable-C (PMC) and potentially mineralizable-N (PMN) were noticed under 2 kg B ha–1. Analogous trend was recorded in soil microbial populations at different crop growth stages. Similarly, escalating B levels up to 2 kg B ha–1 exhibited significantly greater soil enzymatic activities viz., arylsulphatase (AS), dehydrogenase (DH), fluorescein diacetate (FDA) and phosphomonoesterase (PMA), except urease enzyme (UE) which showed an antagonistic effect of applied-B in soil. Greater geometric mean enzyme activity (GMEA) and soil functional diversity index were recorded under 2 kg B ha–1 in CCOCS, at all crop growth stages over control. The inclusive results indicated that different soil physico-chemical and biological properties CCOCS can be invariably improved by the application of graded levels of B up to 2 kg B ha–1 in an acid Inceptisol.

Purpose – Pre-screening of skin lesion for malignancy is highly demanded as melanoma being a life-threatening skin cancer due to unpaired DNA damage. In this paper, lesion segmentation based on Fuzzy C-Means clustering using non-dermoscopic images has been proposed. Design/methodology/approach – The proposed methodology consists of automatic cluster selection for FCM using the histogram property. The system used the local maxima along with Euclidean distance to detect the binomial distribution property of the image histogram, to segment the melanoma from normal skin. As the Value channel of HSV color image provides better and distinct histogram distribution based on the entropy, it has been used for segmentation purpose. Findings – The proposed system can effectively segment the lesion region from the normal skin. The system provides a segmentation accuracy of 95.69 % and the comparative analysis has been performed with various segmentation methods. From the analysis, it has been observed that the proposed system can effectively segment the lesion region from normal skin automatically. Originality/Value – This paper suggests a new approach for skin lesion segmentation based on FCM with automatic cluster selection. Here, different color channel has also been analyzed using entropy to select the better channel for segmentation. In future, the classification of melanoma from benign naevi can be performed.

The genetic variability of ‘Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus’ (CLas) population associated with huanglongbing (HLB) disease of citrus in North Eastern (NE) region of India, a geographically locked region, and home for the diversity of many citrus species was analyzed on the basis of tandem repeat numbers (TRN) in variable CLIBASIA_01645 genomic loci. Fifty-five CLas strains sampled from different groves of NE Hill (NEH) region of India were in single amplicon group, but there was remarkable genetic variability in TRNs. The TRN in HLB-associated CLas strains varied from 0-21 and two novel repeat motifs were also identified. Among the NE population of CLas, TRN5 and TRN9 were most frequent (total frequency of 36.36%) followed by TRN4 (14.55%) and TRN6, TNR7 with a frequency of 12.73% each. Class II type CLas genotypes (5 < TRN ≤ 10) had highest prevalence (frequency of 60.00%) in the samples characterized in present study. Class I (TRN ≤ 5) genotypes were second highest prevalent (29.09%) in the NEH region. Further analysis of genetic diversity parameters using Nei's measure (H value) indicated wide genetic diversity in the CLas strains of NE India (H value of 0.58-0.86). Manipur CLas strains had highest genetic variability (0.86) as compared to Eastern, Southern and Central India. The R10 values (TRN ≤ 10/TRN > 10) of NE CLas population was 10.43 (73/7), higher from other regions of India. Present study conclusively reported the occurrence of high genetic variability in TRN of CLas population in North East Indian citrus groves which have evolved to adapt to the specific ecological niche.

While conventional cleaning to remove the coating from plasma chamber walls becomes essential to reproduce the desired materials on the target substrate for widespread applications, an attention towards wall-deposited materials is scarce. Recycling those waste materials to value-added product is of great importance for sustainable progress of our modern society. Herein, we investigated the materials deposited on the wall of plasma chamber, explored their promising features and compared them with conventionally grown materials. A mixture of ZnO and α-Fe2O3 (ZF) exposed to high energy plasma was collected from the wall (ZF-W) and also from the substrate (ZF-S) to check the feasibility of providing same quality products. With same lattice constant of hematite, magnetite and zinc ferrites, ZF-W differs from ZF-S in coercivity, saturation magnetization, ferromagnetic stoichiometry and defects. In addition, degradation of Methyl Blue (MB) dye in ZF-W without use of any external light sources are comparable, more stable and durable in comparison to ZF-S. The slight differences obtained in the property-performances between ZF-W and ZF-S are attributed to the cationic arrangement and the oxygen vacancy defects present in the structure. The study reflects the potentiality of ZF-W as a promising active material for wastewater treatment just as one can use ZF-S. These findings clearly depict that the unused products with altered intrinsic properties obtained after plasma treatment has similar or even better potential to its actual targeted product and thus can be utilized properly thereby saving cost and time and, hence generates an unexplored direction for the materials science community.

Reduced activation ferritic martensitic (RAFM) 9Cr steels, which are candidate materials for the test blanket module (TBM) of nuclear fusion reactors, are considered to be air hardenable. However, alloy composition and the processing conditions play a significant role during the transformation of austenite to martensite/ferrite on cooling. The presence of retained austenite is known to influence the mechanical properties of the steel. Identifying very low amounts of retained austenite is very challenging though conventional microscopy. This paper aims at identifying a low amount of retained austenite in normalized 9Cr-1.4W-0.06Ta-0.12C RAFM steel using synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Mossbauer spectroscopy and confirmed by advanced automated crystal orientation mapping in transmission electron microscopy. Homogeneity of austenite has been understood to influence the microstructure of the normalized steel, which is discussed in detail.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are one of the very important nano-carriers for drug delivery, due to their many advantageous features, such as the ease and low-cost of preparation, low cytotoxicity, good biocompatibility, protection for the intercalated drugs, and the capacity to facilitate the uptake of the loaded drug in the cells. In our previous studies, Mössbauer spectroscopy was applied to monitor structural changes occurring during the incorporation of Fe(III) in MgFe- and CaFe-LDHs, and the intercalation of various organic compounds in anionic form. Recently, we have successfully elaborated a protocol for the intercalation and release of indol-2-carboxylate and L-cysteinate in CaFe-LDH. The corresponding structural changes in the LDH samples were studied by XRD, HR-TEM and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. The Mössbauer spectra reflected small but significant changes upon both the intercalation and the release of drugs. The changes in the basal distances could be followed by XRD measurements, and HR-TEM images made these changes visible.

Peroxiredoxins(Prdx), the family of non-selenium glutathione peroxidases, are important antioxidant enzymes that defend our system from the toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS). They are thiol-based peroxidases that utilize self-oxidation of their peroxidatic cysteine (Cp) group to reduce peroxides and peroxidized biomolecules. However, because of its high affinity for hydrogen peroxide this peroxidatic cysteine moiety is extremely susceptible to hyperoxidation, forming peroxidase inactive sulfinic acid (Cys-SO2H) and sulfonic acid (Cys-SO3H) derivatives. With the exception of peroxiredoxin 6 (Prdx6), hyperoxidized sulfinic forms of Prdx can be reversed to restore peroxidase activity by the ATP-dependent enzyme sulfiredoxin. Interestingly, hyperoxidized Prdx6 protein seems to have physiological significance as hyperoxidation has been reported to dramatically upregulate its calcium independent phospholipase A2 activity. Using biochemical studies and molecular dynamic (MD) simulation, we investigated the roles of thermodynamic, structural and internal flexibility of Prdx6 to comprehend the structural alteration of the protein in the oxidized state. We observed the loosening of the hydrophobic core of the enzyme in its secondary and tertiary structures. These changes do not affect the internal dynamics of the protein (as indicated by root-mean-square deviation, RMSD and root mean square fluctuation, RMSF plots). Native-PAGE and dynamic light scattering experiments revealed the formation of higher oligomers of Prdx6 under hyperoxidation. Our study demonstrates that post translational modification (like hyperoxidation) in Prdx6 can result in major alterations of its multimeric status.

Mössbauer spectroscopic studies have been carried out at different temperatures across ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition in Ni50Fe35Co15 and the evolution of hyperfine parameters such as centre shift and magnetic hyperfine fields with temperature has been studied. Mössbauer spectrum obtained at 300 K in Ni50Fe35Co15 exhibiting fcc crystal structure is a six line pattern with the mean value of the hyperfine field close to 33 Tesla. Ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition has been observed to occur in this system around 895 K matching with that of magnetization results. Debye temperature of this nickel rich alloy is deduced to be around 470 K matching with that of Ni. Effect of prolonged annealing at 750 K on the magnetic property is also investigated with respect to the thermal stability of the alloy .
