CHANCES, the CHileAN Cluster galaxy Evolution Survey, will study the evolution of galaxies in and around ${\sim}$150 massive galaxy clusters, from the local universe out to z=0.45. CHANCES will use the new 4MOST Spectroscopic Survey Facility on the VISTA 4m telescope to obtain spectra for ${\sim}$500,000 galaxies with magnitudes $r_\mathrm{AB} < 20.5$, providing comprehensive spectroscopic coverage of each cluster out to $5r_{200}$. Its wide and deep scope will trace massive and dwarf galaxies from the surrounding filaments and groups to the cores of galaxy clusters, enabling the study of galaxy pre-processing and the role of the evolving environment on galaxy evolution. In this paper we present and characterize the sample of clusters and superclusters to be targeted by CHANCES. We used literature catalogues based on X-ray emission and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect to define the cluster sample in a homogeneous way, with attention to cluster mass and redshift, as well as the availability of ancillary data. We calibrated literature mass estimates from various surveys against each other and provide an initial mass estimate for each cluster, which we used to define the radial extent of the 4MOST coverage. The Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) is a project to map $\sim9300$ sq deg of the sky using twelve bands (seven narrow and five broadbands). Observations are performed with the T80-South telescope, a robotic telescope located at the Cerro Tololo Observatory in Chile. The survey footprint consists of several large contiguous areas, including fields at high and low galactic latitudes, and towards the Magellanic Clouds. S-PLUS uses fixed exposure times to reach point source depths of about $21$ mag in the $griz$ and $20$ mag in the $u$ and the narrow filters. This paper describes the S-PLUS Data Release 4 (DR4), which includes calibrated images and derived catalogues for over 3000 sq deg, covering the aforementioned area. The catalogues provide multi-band photometry performed with the tools \texttt{DoPHOT} and \texttt{SExtractor} -- point spread function (\PSF) and aperture photometry, respectively. In addition to the characterization, we also present the scientific potential of the data. We use statistical tools to present and compare the photometry obtained through different methods. Overall we find good agreement between the different methods, with a slight systematic offset of 0.05\,mag between our \PSF and aperture photometry. We show that the astrometry accuracy is equivalent to that obtained in previous S-PLUS data releases, even in very crowded fields where photometric extraction is challenging. The depths of main survey (MS) photometry for a minimum signal-to-noise ratio $S/N = 3$ reach from $\sim19.5$ for the bluer bands to $\sim21.5$ mag on the red. The range of magnitudes over which accurate \PSF photometry is obtained is shallower, reaching $\sim19$ to $\sim20.5$ mag depending on the filter. This paper presents the first public data release of the S-PLUS Ultra-Short Survey (USS), a photometric survey with short exposure times, covering approximately 9300 deg$^{2}$ of the Southern sky. The USS utilizes the Javalambre 12-band magnitude system, including narrow and medium-band and broad-band filters targeting prominent stellar spectral features. The primary objective of the USS is to identify bright, extremely metal-poor (EMP; [Fe/H] $\leq -3$) and ultra metal-poor (UMP; [Fe/H] $\leq -4$) stars for further analysis using medium- and high-resolution spectroscopy.}{This paper provides an overview of the survey observations, calibration method, data quality, and data products. Additionally, it presents the selection of EMP and UMP candidates.}{The data from the USS were reduced and calibrated using the same methods as presented in the S-PLUS DR2. An additional step was introduced, accounting for the offset between the observed magnitudes off the USS and the predicted magnitudes from the very low-resolution Gaia XP spectra.}{This first release contains data for 163 observed fields totaling $\sim$324 deg$^{2}$ along the Celestial Equator. The magnitudes obtained from the USS are well-calibrated, showing a difference of $\sim 15$ mmag compared to the predicted magnitudes by the GaiaXPy toolkit. The Magellanic Clouds are the most massive and closest satellite galaxies of the Milky Way, with stars covering ages from a few Myr up to 13 Gyr. This makes them important for validating integrated light methods to study stellar populations and star-formation processes, which can be applied to more distant galaxies. We characterized a set of stellar clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), using the $\textit{Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey}$. This is the first age (metallicity) determination for 11 (65) clusters of this sample. Through its 7 narrow bands, centered on important spectral features, and 5 broad bands, we can retrieve detailed information about stellar populations. We obtained ages and metallicities for all stellar clusters using the Bayesian spectral energy distribution fitting code $\texttt{BAGPIPES}$. With a sample of clusters in the color range $-0.20 < r-z < +0.35$, for which our determined parameters are most reliable, we modeled the age-metallicity relation of SMC. At any given age, the metallicities of SMC clusters are lower than those of both the Gaia Sausage-Enceladus disrupted dwarf galaxy and the Milky Way. In comparison with literature values, differences are $\Delta$log(age)$\approx0.31$ and $\Delta$[Fe/H]$\approx0.41$, which is comparable to low-resolution spectroscopy of individual stars. Finally, we confirm a previously known gradient, with younger clusters in the center and older ones preferentially located in the outermost regions. We report on the discovery of SPLUS J210428.01-004934.2, an ultra metal-poor (UMP) star first identified from the narrow-band photometry of the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) Data Release 1, in the SDSS Stripe 82 region. Follow-up medium- and high-resolution spectroscopy (with Gemini South and Magellan-Clay, respectively) confirmed the effectiveness of the search for low-metallicity stars using the S-PLUS narrow-band photometry. At [Fe/H]=-4.03, SPLUS J2104-0049 has the lowest detected carbon abundance, A(C)=+4.34, when compared to the 34 previously known UMP stars in the literature, which is an important constraint on its stellar progenitor and also on stellar evolution models at the lowest metallicities. Based on its chemical abundance pattern, we speculate that SPLUS J2104-0049 could be a bonafide second-generation star, formed from a gas cloud polluted by a single metal-free ~30Mo star. This discovery opens the possibility of finding additional UMP stars directly from narrow-band photometric surveys, a potentially powerful method to help complete the inventory of such peculiar objects in our Galaxy., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication on ApJ Letters

We report photometric estimates of effective temperature, $T_{\rm eff}$, metallicity, [Fe/H], carbonicity, [C/Fe], and absolute carbon abundances, $A{\rm (C)}$, for over 700,000 stars from the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) Data Release 2, covering a substantial fraction of the equatorial Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82. We present an analysis for two stellar populations: 1) halo main-sequence turnoff stars and 2) K-dwarf stars of mass $0.58 < M/M_{\odot} <0.75$ in the Solar Neighborhood. Application of the Stellar Photometric Index Network Explorer (SPHINX) to the mixed-bandwidth (narrow- plus wide-band) filter photometry from S-PLUS produces robust estimates of the metallicities and carbon abundances in stellar atmospheres over a wide range of temperature, $4250 < T_{\rm eff} \textrm{(K)} < 7000$. The use of multiple narrow-band S-PLUS filters enables SPHINX to achieve substantially lower levels of "catastrophic failures" (large offsets in metallicity estimates relative to spectroscopic determinations) than previous efforts using a single metallicity-sensitive narrow-band filter. We constrain the exponential slope of the Milky Way's K-dwarf halo metallicity distribution function (MDF), $\lambda_{10, \textrm{[Fe/H]}} = 0.85 \pm 0.21$, over the metallicity range $-2.5 < \textrm{[Fe/H]} < -1.0$; the MDF of our local-volume K-dwarf sample is well-represented by a gamma distribution with parameters $\alpha=2.8$ and $\beta=4.2$. S-PLUS photometry obtains absolute carbon abundances with a precision of $\sim 0.35$dex for stars with $T_{\rm eff} < 6500$K. We identify 364 candidate carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars, obtain assignments of these stars into the Yoon-Beers morphological groups in the $A$(C)-[Fe/H] space, and derive the CEMP frequencies., Comment: 27 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Context. The Vista Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) near-infrared variability survey explores some of the most complex regions of the Milky Way bulge and disk in terms of high extinction and high crowding. Aims. We add a new wavelength dimension to the optical information available at the American Association of Variable Star Observers International Variable Star Index (VSX-AAVSO) catalogue to test the VVV survey near-infrared photometry to better characterise these objects. Methods. We cross-matched the VVV and the VSX-AAVSO catalogues along with Gaia Data Release 2 photometry and parallax. Results. We present a catalogue that includes accurate individual coordinates, near-infrared magnitudes (ZY JHKs), extinctions Aks, and distances based on Gaia parallaxes. We also show the near-infrared CMDs and spatial distributions for the different VSX types of variable stars, including important distance indicators, such as RR Lyrae, Cepheids, and Miras. By analysing the photometric flags in our catalogue, we found that about 20% of the stars with measured and verified variability are flagged as non-stellar sources, even when they are outside of the saturation and/or noise regimes. Additionally, we pair-matched our sample with the VIVA catalogue and found that more than half of our sources are missing from the VVV variability list, mostly due to observations with low signal-to-noise ratio or photometric problems with a low percentage due to failures in the selection process. Conclusions. Our results suggest that the current knowledge of the variability in the Galaxy is biased to nearby stars with low extinction. The present catalogue also provides the groundwork for characterising the results of future large variability surveys such as the Vera C. Basing our analysis on ROGUE I, a catalog of over 32,000 radio sources associated with optical galaxies, we provide two diagnostics to select the galaxies where the radio emission is due to an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Each of these diagnostics can be applied independently. The first one, dubbed MIRAD, compares the flux $F_{W3}$ in the $W3$ mid-infrared band of the WISE telescope, with the radio flux at 1.4 GHz, $\Frad$. MIRAD requires no optical spectra. The second diagnostic, dubbed DLM, relates the 4000 \AA\ break strength, $D_{\rm n}(4000)$, with the radio luminosity per unit stellar mass. The DLM diagram has already been used in the past, but not as standalone. For these two diagrams, we propose simple, empirical dividing lines that result in the same classification for the objects in common. These lines correctly classify as radio-AGN 99.5 percent of the extended radio sources in the ROGUE~I catalog, and as star-forming (SF) galaxies 98--99 percent of the galaxies identified as such by their emission line ratios. Both diagrams clearly show that radio AGNs are preferentially found among elliptical galaxies and among galaxies hosting the most massive black holes. The nearby Hydra Cluster ($\sim$50 Mpc) is an ideal laboratory to understand, in detail, the influence of the environment on the morphology and quenching of galaxies in dense environments. We study the Hydra cluster galaxies in the inner regions ($1R_{200}$) of the cluster using data from the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS), which uses 12 narrow and broad band filters in the visible region of the spectrum. We analyse structural (S\'ersic index, effective radius) and physical (colours, stellar masses and star formation rates) properties. Based on this analysis, we find that $\sim$88 percent of the Hydra cluster galaxies are quenched. Using the Dressler-Schectman test approach, we also find that the cluster shows possible substructures. Our analysis of the phase-space diagram together with DBSCAN algorithm indicates that Hydra shows an additional substructure that appears to be in front of the cluster centre, which is still falling into it. Our results, thus, suggest that the Hydra Cluster might not be relaxed. We analyse the median S\'ersic index as a function of wavelength and find that for red ($(u-r)\geq$2.3) and early-type galaxies it displays a slight increase towards redder filters (13 and 18 percent, for red and early-type respectively) whereas for blue+green ($(u-r)$<2.3) galaxies it remains constant. Late-type galaxies show a small decrease of the median S\'ersic index toward redder filters. Also, the S\'ersic index of galaxies, and thus their structural properties, do not significantly vary as a function of clustercentric distance and density within the cluster; and this is the case regardless of the filter., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Stellar population studies of early-type galaxies (ETGs) based on their optical stellar continuum suggest that these are quiescent systems. However, emission lines and ultraviolet photometry reveal a diverse population. We use a new version of the STARLIGHT spectral synthesis code and state-of-the-art stellar population models to simultaneously fit SDSS spectra and GALEX photometry for a sample of 3453 galaxies at $z < 0.1$ with $NUV-r > 5$ that are classified as elliptical by Galaxy Zoo. We reproduce $FUV$ magnitudes for 80 per cent of UV upturn galaxies selected using criteria from the literature, suggesting that additional stellar population ingredients such as binaries and extreme horizontal branch stars may have a limited contribution to the UV upturn. The addition of ultraviolet data leads to a broadening of the distributions of mean stellar ages, metallicities and attenuation. Stellar populations younger than $1\,$Gyr are required to reproduce the ultraviolet emission in 17 per cent of our sample. These systems represent 43 per cent of the sample at $5

We combine data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Galaxy Evolution Explorer to simultaneously analyze optical spectra and ultraviolet photometry of 231643 galaxies with the STARLIGHT spectral synthesis code using state-of-the-art stellar population models. We present a new method to estimate GALEX photometry in the SDSS spectroscopic aperture, which proves quite reliable if applied to large samples. In agreement with previous experiments with CALIFA, we find that adding UV constraints leads to a moderate increase on the fraction of $\sim 10^7$ - $10^8$ yr populations and a concomitant decrease of younger and older components, yielding slightly older luminosity weighted mean stellar ages. These changes are most relevant in the low-mass end of the blue cloud. An increase in dust attenuation is observed for galaxies dominated by young stars. We investigate the contribution of different stellar populations to the fraction of light in GALEX and SDSS bands across the UV-optical color-magnitude diagram. As an example application, we use this $\lambda$ dependence to highlight differences between retired galaxies with and without emission lines. In agreement with an independent study by Herpich et al., we find that the former show an excess of intermediate age populations when compared to the later. Finally, we test the suitability of two different prescription for dust, finding that our dataset is best fitted using the attenuation law of starburst galaxies. However, results for the Milky Way extinction curve improve with decreasing $\tau_V$, especially for edge-on galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS
